1Normally a student must attend a certain number oi" courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit(学分)which he may count to- wards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester(学期). A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice. For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, andthe record is available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this impo- ses a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually per- formed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does in- volve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of au- thority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.Normally a student would at least attend classes each week.A. 36B. 12C. 20D.

The way people hold to the belief that a fun filled, pain free lifeequals happiness actually reduces their chances of everattaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal tohappiness then pain must be equal to unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true : more often than not things that lead tohappiness involve some pain.As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that arethe source of true happiness. They fear the paininevitably brought by such things as marriage, raisingchildren, professional achievement, religious commitment,self-improvement.Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though hefinds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest hewill tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. Forcommitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled withfun, adventure, excitement. Marriage has such moments, butthey are not its most distinguishing features.Couples with infant children are lucky to get a wholenight's sleep or a three day vacation. I don't know anyparent who would choose the fun to describe raising children. But couples who decide not to have children never know thejoys of watching a child grow up or of playing with agrandchild.Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothingto do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. Itliberates time : now we can devote more hours to activitiesthat can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money:buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will donothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy : we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.According to the author, a bachelor resists marriagechiefly because ______.A. he is reluctant to take on family responsibilitiesB. he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remainssingleC. he finds more fun in dating than in marriageD. he fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement[ 答案]A【精析】依照文中第三段第二句 If he is honest he will tell youthat he is afraid of making a commitment.

Water is made from oxygen and hydrogen.;根据生活经验能够理解Green plants let out oxygen and breathe in carbon dioxide.

1 Oceanography has been defined as "The application of all sciences to the study of the sea".Before the nineteenth century, scientists with an interest in the sea were few and far between. Certainly Newton considered some theoretical aspects of it in his writ-ings, but he was reluctant(不愿意)to go to sea to further his work. For most people the sea was remote, and with the exception of early interconti- nental travellers or others who earned a living from the sea, there was little reason to ask many questions about it, let alone to ask what lay beneath the surface. The first time that the question "What is at the bottom of the oceans?" had to be answered with any commercial consequence was when the laying of a telegraph cable from Europe to America was proposed. The engineers had to know the depth profile(起伏形状)of the route to estimate the length of cable that had to be manufactured. It was to Maury of the US Navy that the Atlantic Telegraph Company turned, in 1853, for information on this matter. In the 1840s, Maury had been responsible for encouraging voyages during which soundings(测深)were taken to investigate thedepths of the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Later, some of his findings aroused much popular interest in his book The Physical Geography of the Sea .The cable was laid, but not until 1866 was the connection made permanent and re- liable. At the early attempts, the cable failed and when it was taken out for repairs it was found to be covered in living growths, a fact which defied contemporary scientific opinion that there was no life in the deeper parts of the sea. Within a few years ocea- nography was under way. In 1872 Thomson led a scientific expedition(考察), which lasted for four years and brought home thousands of samples from the sea. Their clas- sification and analysis occupied scientists for years and led to a five-volume report, the last volume being published in 1895. Oceanography has been defined as "The application of all sciences to the study of the sea."(海洋学是综合应用所有科学对海洋进行的研究)。

The author's main purpose in writing the passage is toThe author writes this passage toThe author in this passage in tends to推测写作目的题和了解文章大意题有所不同,后者要知道文章讲什么,中心思想是什么。

To argue a belief,

To inform people of something,

To illustrate the significance/importance,

To analyse the causes of something,

作者有时用一句话来表达段落的中心,此句被称为主题句(topicsentence/statement)。

The author’s main purpose in writing the passage is toThe author writes this passage toThe author in this passage in tends to推测写作目的题和了解文章大意题有所不同,后者要知道文章讲什么,中心思想是什么。

To argue a belief,

To inform people of something,

To illustrate the significance/importance,

To warn people of certain danger,

To analyse the causes of something,

To describe certain problems/phenomena,

To give people a piece of advise,

To propose a solution,

1Most individual stockmarket investors, particularly in Asia, are speculators who want to pit their wits against the market at large. They share British entrepreneur Jim Slater’s view that “a long-term investment is a short-term investment gone wrong,” and look for the big, quick profits which can be made when share prices are driven up by important new information about a company’s business, for instance the announce- ment of a takeover bid.Official market-moving announcements of this kind are frequently foreshadowed by unofficial rumours. Buying or selling on the basis of such “inside”information vio- lates the rules of most stockmarkets, but is widely practised and hard to document. Sometimes a rumour may be spread deliberately for the purpose of artificially raising a share price, usually by investors who hold shares which they want to sell. This is the so-calledramp .Speculative situations tend to produce the highest rewards, but they also carry with them the highest risk.the profits made by the first people into a ramp are only as big as the losses made by those who get in last. The merit of analysing companies be- fore plunging headlong into buying their shares is that it helps limit the “downsi de”of any investment--the amount of money you stand to lose if your investment goes wrong. Companies which have good saleable assets and steady cash earnings may fall periodically out of favour with the stockmarket, but they are unlikely to collapse alto-gether,and they are likely sooner or later to regain value. This investor who bothers to verify that the company in which he is speculating is not fundamentally worthless has the reassurance that even a bad short-term buy should prove to have some long-term value. The author in this passage intends toA. warn people not to buy stocksB. encourage people to go to stockmarketC. advise people to be cautious of buying or selling stocksD. tell people how to buy and sell stocks这篇文章是关于买卖股票的。

The investor who bothers to veri-fy that the company in which he is speculating……has the reassurance that even a bad short-term buy should prove to have some long-term value只有核实和掌握该公司的情况,才能在做短线买卖中,获得长期投资的收益。

所以C项ad-vise people to be cautious of buying or selling stocks是正确的答案。

2Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable occupations. Personal consultants give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractivedefendants(被告). But in the executive circle, beauty can be- come a liability. While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the ex- ecutive ladder,it is harmful to a woman. Handsome male executive were perceived as having more integrity than plainer men, effort and ability were thought to account for their success. Attractive female executives were considered to have less integrity than unattractive ones; their success was attributed not to ability but to factors such as luck. All unattractive women executive were thought to have more integrity and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes was attributed more to personal relationships and less to ability than was that of attractive overnight successes. Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is perceived to be more feminine(女性的)and an attractive man more masculine(男性的)than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally masculine position appears to lack the “masculine”qualities required. This is true even in politics. “When the only clue is how he or she looks,peo- ple treat men and women differently,”says Anne Bowman, who recentlypublished a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 undergradu- ate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women,in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for politi- cal offices. They were asked to rank them again,in the order they would vote for them. The results showed that attractive males utterly defeated unattractive men, but the women who had been ranked most attractive invariably received the fewest votes.。
