In this unit, you will
• learn about ancient China’s contribution to modern science;
• research “Four Great Inventions”, “The Genius of China” and “The Nobel Prize” on the Internet and find reliable information;
—Karl Marx
about China’s Science and Technology
• The four inventions do not necessarily summarize the achievements of science and technology in ancient China. The four inventions were regarded as the most important Chinese achievements in science and technology, simply because they had a prominent position in the exchanges between the East and the West and acted as a powerful dynamic in the development of capitalism in Europe. As a matter of fact, ancient Chinese scored much more than the four major inventions: in farming, iron and copper metallurgy, exploitation of coal and petroleum, machinery, medicine, astronomy, mathematics, porcelain, silk, and wine making. The numerous inventions and discoveries greatly advanced China's productive forces and social life. Many are at least as important as the four inventions, and some are even greater than the four.

The researchers have found that a traffic ticket reduces a driver’s chance of being involved in a fatal accident by a whopping 35 percent, at least for a few weeks. The effect doesn’t last long, however. Within three to four months, the lead foot is back on the pedal and the risk of killing yourself or someone else is back up to where it was before that cop stared you in the eye and wrote out that expensive citation.研究者们发现一张交通罚单能让司机至少在几周内遭遇重大车祸的概率降低35%。

Unit 3
Psychology
Text B Text Analysis
2. We are often cautioned against judging a book by its cover. What does it imply when it comes to making a judgment of somebody?
Pessimism vs. optimism
Imagine you divided everyone in the world into two psychological groups. You put all the optimists on one side and all the pessimists on the other (let’s leave the realists aside for now). Amongst the optimists the conversation would all be about fantastic plans for the future. Meanwhile the pessimists are having what might seem to the optimists like a depressing discussion. They’re worrying about all the things that might go wrong. They’re worried that even the things they have will be taken away from them by some cruel twist of fate.
It implies that people are not always what they seem, that surface appearances are deceptive. People shouldn’t be judged by how they look but be judged by their actions.

3. What message does the author want to convey through a host of examples listed in the text?
The author wants to convey to readers that people, at all times, tend to form a quick impression of others based only on a quick “snapshot” of information and that they are programmed by evolution to respond differently to people with different features. For example, they may respond gently to infantile features so that real babies or adults with baby faces are treated with tender care.

Text A Supplementary information
Over the years psychologists have examined many aspects of pessimism and optimism. There’s good news for all. There are some advantages to optimism like it seems to make people feel better about life. But there are also advantages for pessimism as thinking the worst helps some pessimists cope better with the world. However, we should be less concerned with which is “better” or which camp is larger and more interested in why people see the world in such different ways in the first place.

1. the English idiom “don’t judge a book by its cover”
The very common English idiom “don’t judge a book by its cover” is a metaphorical phrase which means “don’t determine the worth of something based on its appearance”. It is probably the most common expression used in English to convey attitudes against vanity. Another commonly used expression with similar meaning is “all that glitters in not gold”, meaning that not everything that looks precious or true turns out to be so. This can apply to persons, places, or things that promise to be more than they really are.
