When some Americans sawthem eating a round piece of beef, they asked the Germans what is was. The Germans didn’t understand the question and answered, “We come from Hamburg.” One of t hese Americans owned a restaurant. He had an idea. He cooked some round pieces of bread and started selling them. Such bread came to be called “hamburgers”. Each year my father would dress up as Santa Claus and go through the streets of the projects sharing joy and candies with the children there. In fact, there was no money for Christmas and my parents weren’t sure what they’d provide for us.That Christmas Eve, however, as usual, my father left the house dressed as Santa Claus. He knew that even though our Christmas would be hard, he could not disappoint the other kids in the neighborhood. As my father left the house and went down the walkway, Santa Claus was walking up, with a great sack (麻布袋) full of gifts for us! He said nothing, only smiled a sweet smile at my father, and wished him a Merry Christmas. AI am a city girl, and my idea of a big animal was a German dog. Meeting Dan changed everything. Early in our dating, he told me of his dream to own a farm.“Don’t cows kick?” I worried when I saw the huge cattle. Dan laughed. “Don’t be afraid,”he said. “Just try milking a few times a day. You’ll get used to them.”After six months, I still was too nervous to try it.One evening I heard the low mooing of the cows in their lot. Then I heard the cows again, but louder. I looked out of the window. A storm was coming. Suddenly I saw a cow running past the window. Another cow passed, and a third one moved into the yard. “Dan!” I shouted—then remembered he had gone into town.I rushed back into the house and pulled on my coat. The noise had roused the children, and they called to me from upstairs. “Stay inside,” I shouted as I went out of the door, “no matter what!”I was running to the yard. Suddenly the hundred cows turned and were coming in my direction! Beside me there was an old gate leading into an empty lot. I threw myself against the gate. Got it! And all at once the cows entered the lot. When Dan got home, I told him the story. “You rescued a whole herd of cows!” Dan said. Scientists have long wondered what these birds havein common. A new study suggests that big body size does not predict bad behavior. Instead, it is the size of the birds’ brains that matters most.To learn more about what makes some birds tend toward a life of crime and how they steal food from other birds, scientists analyzed 856 published reports of thieves. Researcher Julie says she started the project after watching birds steal dry dog food out of unattended bowls. She read about some dramatic examples of thieves, including birds that steal food from others flying in midair or bending through the sky. She learned that members of some species disturb other birds until they spit up food in their mouth.Families that steal also tend to eat fish, mice, and other vertebrates(脊椎动物) instead of just insects. These meatier (多肉的) meals are hard to catch, and they deliver lots of valuable calories, so they are tempting to steal. Finally, birds that steal tend to have big brains in relation to their bodies. That may seem surprising, since human bullies(欺凌弱小者) are often thought to be stronger in size. But for birds, stealing isn’t about strength. It takes a clever brain to get food out of another hungry bird’s claws, especially if that bird is bigger than you are.8. The best title for the passage can be _______.A. Diet Habits of a FeatherB. Hunting Skills of a FeatherC. Brains of a FeatherD. Thieves of a Feather9. What is the key factor of the birds’ stealing food?A. Body size.B. Living environment.C. Brain size.D. Mouth length.10. The text probably comes from _________.A. a guide bookB. a popular magazineC. a book reviewD. anofficial documentBThe English language is full of phrases about the weather. Some of these phrases are easy to understand, but others are not really about the weather at all. If you say you “hit r ough weather”, you may not be struck by a real storm, but you do experience difficulties or problems. If you don’t know what such phrases mean, they might leave you “in a fog (雾)”!In English, you can “shoot the breeze”, or have an informal chat. But thing s can also be a breeze. If you take an exam and find it very easy, you’d tell your friends: “It was a breeze!” The wind can also bring information. You can “get wind of” a piece of news, and if someone“knows which way the wind blows”, they have a good ide a about how things will work out. But don’t“throw caution (警惕) to the wind”—that means taking a great risk!Clouds sometimes bring rain, and in English they often represent problems or difficulties. If someone “sees a cloud on the horizon (地平线)”, there may be problems ahead. And if someone is “under a cloud”, then people think the person might have done something wrong. But clouds are not always bad; in fact, people say that “every cloud has a silver lining”. This means that there is a good side to every situation, no matter how bad it may seem. You may even end up “on cloud nine”, which means you are very happy! But some people have their “heads in the clouds”, not paying attention to reality. No one likes to be stuck in the rain or storm, so it’s no sur prise that phrasesabout them are generally negative. When someone says “it never rains but it pours”, they are complaining (抱怨) that when things go wrong, they go very wrong. People who talk about “weathering a storm” just want to get through a difficult period or situation.5. It may be dangerous when you _____.A. know which way the wind blowsB. find that something is a breezeC. get wind of a piece of newsD. throw caution to the wind6. If you look at something in a positive way, you may say _____.A. you are under a cloudB. your head is in the cloudsC. every cloud has a silver liningD. you see a cloud on the horizon7. AIn America, when the eighth graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well. To make it easier, students need to get familiar with their school.Even though they’ve done this already in the middle school, it’s still important to find where their classrooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year. And, most schools also have a freshman (新生) speech for parents and students before the first year begins. Sometimes the main office will give away a map of the school. This can help students and parents to find different places in the school. One way to know your high school more and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport. Schools often offer chances to join different clubs and sports. Fall activities begin in August before the first day of school. If you are not interested in sports, there are clubs for any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, photography, community service, etc. These clubs allow students from different grades. By joining an activity, students can find new friendships, not to mention improving their chances in future college applications (申请). The school office will have a list of activities offered at the school and information on how to join them. What’s more, to have a great start to a high school year, students can write down some of their worries, and ask for help from teachers and school workers.1. According to the text, most students feel ________ when entering the high school.A. excitedB. nervousC. lonelyD. disappointed2. Which of the following is TRUE about the school clubs?A. There are fewer students from higher grades in the school clubs.B. The school clubs in high school only welcome sports fans.C. Summer activities begin before school starts.D. The school office can help new students join school clubs.3. When do many schools take students to visit their new high school?A. Before the eighth grade year starts.B. Right after the high school year starts.C. At the end of their eighth grade yearD. At the beginning of the new term in the high school.4. What is the purpose of this text?A. To tell the new students how to learn in high schoolB. To introduce new schoolsC. To give the teachers some adviceD. To give advice to new high school studentsBThere is an English saying: "Laughter is best medicine." Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter really can improve people's health.Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercises. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing. It also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated(忍受) the pain for the longest time was the groups which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both stress and pain.As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients' condition byencouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial(有益的)effects similar to those who are caused by laughter.5. The main idea of the passage is ____________.A. laughter and physical exercises have similar effects.B. smile can produce the same effects as laughterC. pain can be reduced by laughterD. laughter is best medicine6. The underlined word "diminish" is similar to____________.A. testB. stopC. reduceD. increase7. Doctors hold laughter clinics _____________.A. to give better condition to their patientsB. in order to improve patients' healthC. to make patients smile all the timeD. to prove smile and laughter have the same effect第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

To show the importance of education.BWhat is language for? Some people seem to think it’s for practicing grammar rules and learning lists of words—the longer the lists, the better. However, it’s wrong.Language is for the exchange (交流) of ideas and info rmation. It’s meaningless knowing all about a language if you can’t use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can’t speak correctly or fluently. They are afraid of making mistakes.People shouldn’t be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard Shaw once wrote: “Foreigners often speak English too correctly.” But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They’re English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right. People not only make history, but they make language. But a person can only make his own language. It can’t make another people’s language. So Chinese learners can learn about grammar, but they shouldn’t focus on it. They should put communication first. Understanding others correctly and expressing themselves freely matter more.5. Generally, when an American or an Englishman speaks English,he ______.A.never makes mistakes B.often makes mistakesC.can't avoid making mistakes D.seldom cares about mistakes6.If too many native speakers break a rule,______.A.what they use will become right B.they are against the lawC.they should say sorry to others D.they will become heroes7. Why Bernard Shaw is mentioned in this passage?A. to prove that everybody makes mistakes.B. to prove that foreigners speak English too correctly and they never make mistakes.C. to show that native speakers are not afraid of making mistakesD. to show that foreigners don’t have to be afraid of making mistakes whilespeaking English.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑.ACharlie is a teacher and his wife, Maria is an artist. The night before last, just before the longest day of the year, Charlie was sitting in a deckchair enjoying the warm summer air when Maria touched his shoulder and he could tell immediately she was a little worried about something. He asked her what the matter was and she replied that there was a strange thing on the jacket that was hanging in the bedroom. They had both lived in the West Indies (西印度群岛) and had seen a lot of strange creatures in their house before. But now they were living in England and so Charlie just laughed and said he would have a look at the “thing”.He walked to the bedroom. He saw a jacket hanging in the bedroom and went up to it to have a closer look at the “thing”. The moment he touched it, the thing sprang into life. Now Charlie experiences fear like the rest of us but when this creature opened its wings, he jumped out of his skin and ran screaming from the room like a small child doing about 100 miles an hour. For a moment the next-door neighbours thought that Charlie was murdering his wife because of the noise they could hear. In fact, it was a bat that frightened Charlie.Eventually Charlie managed to trap the bat in a box and took it to the garden to let the bat fly. Maria, who had been playing the guitar while Charlie was upstairs, asked Charlie if he had found out what the thing was. “Oh, nothing to worry about”, he said casually hoping that the terror could not be seen in his eyes, “it was just a bat.”1. Why was Maria a little worried one night?A. Because she couldn't find her guitar.B. Because she saw something strange.C. Because it was too hot for her.D. Because she had quarreled with her husband.2. The underlined part “jumped out of his skin” in the second paragraph probably means ____.A. stood upB. was very frightenedC. threw off his clothesD. was very excited3. What happened to the bat?A. Why does this happen? Should the parents take any measures? On the one hand, people who spend a lot of time in front of the TV, especially teenagers, may snack more, and that may affect their long-term diet quality. On the other hand,TV ads for fast food, sweets and snacks tempt teenagers to eat more of those foods. And TV time might also replace exercise time for some kids.Lead researcher Dr. Daheia J. Barr-Anderson,of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, told Reuters Health a clear correlation between TV time during high school and diet quality in young adulthood. While the heaviest TV viewers were eating the most junk food , those who'd watched less than two hours per day had the highest intake(吸收)of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and high-calcium food. In her opinion, parents should limit and monitor TV viewing. As far as I am concerned, children should watch no more than two hours of television per day. And parents should set a good example by eating right, being physically active and curbing their own TV time.5. The little games men and women play with each other while conversing would be lost. The question everyone asks himself or herself after talking with someone of the opposite sex,“I wonder if there’s something there?” would no longer exist.24.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 refer to?A.The diffe rences between men’s and women’s languages.B.The different speed of men’s and women’s speech.C.The ability of men’s and women’s spoken language.D.The nonverbal vocabulary of men and women.25.In what way do men and women differ according to the third paragraph?A.Speed of understanding.B.Understanding of speech roles.C.Politeness of communication.D.Application of body language.26.What is the author’s attitude to the differences between men’s and women’s communication?A.Cautious. We were there, as mental health professionals, to offer "psychological first aid" and I was struck by the simple healing power of presence. As we walked in the gate to the shelter, we were greeted with a burst of gratitude (感激) from the first person we met. I felt appreciated, but also guilty, because I hadn’t really done anything yet.I first realized the power of presence many years ago when a friend’s mother passed a way unexpectedly. I had received a call saying she had just passed away. I wanted to rush down there immediately, but didn’t want to intrude (打扰) on this very personal period of sadness. I was torn about what to do. Another friend with me then said, "Just go. Just be there." I did, and I will never regret it.Since then, I have not hesitated to be in the presence of others. Once I sat at the bedside of a young man suffering from the pain of his AIDS — related dying. He was not awake, and obviously unaware o f others’ presence. However, the atmosphere was by no means solemn. His family, playing guitars and singing, allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive. In my life, I am repeatedly struck by the healing power of presence. In it, none of us are truly alone. It is not only something we give to others but also changes me for the better.28.Why were the hurricane victims grateful to the author?A. It would then join a wild flock and chatter away in the trees, its words being learned by younger birds in the flock. The older ones would be unlikely to start learning. When chicks are born, they hear the words being spoken by the older birds and grow up repeating the phrases. And so it continues, generation after generation.Mr. Robinson said that because of a drought in the western regions of New South Wales, flocks of wild bird “speakers” among them have been flying to Sydney, where more food is available, and have been hanging around suburban gardens. From the tree tops in gardens, from chimney pots and lamp posts, the flocks have been talking away, leaving many people wondering if their minds were playing tricks on them.“These birds are very smart and very social, meaning that communication and contact is important between them,” said Mr. Robinson. “I just hope a pet bird that's been taught dirty words doesn't join a flock because we don't want to hear that kind of thing going around the back gardens.”32.When people heard a flock of birds say “Hello there!”, they felt ________.A.there was something wrong with their mindsB.they had drunk some wineC.they were in a world of parrotsD.they heard people speaking33.Flocks of wild bird “speakers” have been flying to Sydney because ________.A.they are following some escaped pet parrotsB.it is easy for them to find food in SydneyC.there are fewer birds left in New South WalesD.they are on their way of migration34.We can learn from the passage that ________.A.parrots like to learn to speak human languageB.younger birds are most likely to learn the language from the escaped parrotsC.parrots can learn to speak from each other, whether old or youngD.parrots flock together because they speak the same language35.What Mr. Robinson said in the last paragraph suggests that ________.A.a flock of parrots can only pick up some simple sentencesB.parrots cannot learn to say dirty wordsC.parrots can even pick up dirty wordsD.a pet parrot is forbidden to be taught dirty words第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Scientists have isolated the antibiotics from microbes(微生物) found either from these insects or in soil particles trapped with them when they were caught by sticky treerisen up to 130 million years ago.Presentday antibiotics have nearly all been isolated from microbes that use them as a form of defense against their enemies and competitors. But since the introduction of antibiotics into medicine 50 years ago, an alarming number have become ineffective because many bacteria have developed resistance to the drugs. Research over the past two years has uncovered at least four antibiotics from the microbes and one has been able to kill modern drugresistant bacteria that can cause potentially deadly diseases in humans.Raul Cano, who has pioneered the research at the California Polytechnic State University, said t he ancient antibiotics had been successful in fighting drugresistant strains of staphylococcus (葡萄球菌),a “superbug” that had threatened the health of patients in hospitals across the globe. He now intends to establish whether the antibiotics might have sid e effects. “The problem is how toxic they are to other cells and how easy they are to purify”, said Cano.Cano's findings have been acknowledged as a breakthrough. A biotechnology company, Ambergene, has been set up to develop the antibiotics into drugs. If any ancient microbes are revived (复活) that resemble presentday disease, they will be destroyed in case they escape and cause new epidemics. Drug companies will be anxious to study the chemical structures of the prehistoric antibiotics to see how they differ from modern drugs. They hope that one ancient molecule could be used as a basis to produce a range of drugs. However, even the use of ancient antibiotics may not stop the rise of drugresistant bacteria. Stuart Levy warned that the bacteria would eventually evolve to fight back against the new drugs. “There might also be an enzyme already out there that can degrade it. So the only way to keep the life of that antibiotic going is to use it sensibly and not excessively,” he said.28. What problem has man faced since the use of antibiotics as medicine according to thepassage?A. Antibiotics are very difficult to purify.B. Antibiotics do harm to human health.C. Antibiotics resemble some diseasecausing bacteria.D. Antibiotics are becoming ineffective in fighting against bacteria.29. Why are Cano's findings considered as a breakthrough in science?A. His discoveries will help revive ancient microbes.B. His discoveries will put an end to the rise of drugresistant bacteria.C. The company Ambergene has applied the prehistoric antibiotics to drugs.D. The prehistoric antibiotics proved more deadly against drugresistant modern bacteria.30.According to the last paragraph, what is Stuart Levy's attitude towards the use of ancientantibiotics ?A. Cautious.B. Contradictory.C. Confident.D. Critical.31. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A. Antibiotics-Dangerous or Not?B. Biotechnology Revealed Prehistoric SecretsC. Insect Antibiotics and Bacteria EvolutionD. Prehistoric Insects Might Help Invent New DrugsDNext week California will try to take cell phones from the hands of drivers, telling everyone from millionaires to workers that conversations behind the wheel must be on an earphone.Californians interviewed by Reuters mostly supported the law requiring hands-free phones in cars and banning cell phones entirely for drivers under 18, which will take effect on Tuesday, though they were puzzled by a loophole(漏洞) that allows seemingly more dangerous text messaging. Some were doubtful about lawmakers, who they blamed for failing to build more freeways or public transportation in the face of increasingly crowded roads in the nation’s most populous state and said hands-free conversations were not safer.KFI-AM radio talk-show host John Kobylt told Reuters. “It's stupid because we’ve one over about seven different studies and each one of them says it’s the conversation that distracts you, not holding the p hone.”State Senator Joe Simitian, who introduced the bill, said keeping both hands on the wheel was always safer. AIs It Bad to Cross Your Legs When You Sit?Crossing your legs is an extremely common hab it; most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increase s resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but if you sit for long periods of time it’s important that you take note of how long you have your legs crossed for. You shouldn’t have your legs crossed for more than 15 minutes, and it’s important that you get up and walk around at least once every hour.Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. Ideally, it’s best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip width apart, on th e floor, but it’s not easy to maintain perfect posture all day at the office. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic bones to rotate. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine, this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck. You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs get tingly or have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other it causes pressure on the veins and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minuteor two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.1.According to para 2, we can infer that___________A.it’s no big deal to cross our legs for less than 15 minutes.B.we will feel uncomfortable at the moment we cro ss the legs.C.we should take a walk every hour after sitting still.D.crossing legs while sitting makes it harder to circulate our blood.2.How many health problems can be caused by crossing legs according to the text?A. 2 B3 C.4 D. 53. A chart that can be stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make in order to communicate. The sticker shows four grids(网格) of letters, which each correspond to a different eye movement.
