Managers set _____and decide how their company can achieve them.A. limitsB. amountsC. detailsD. objectivesReading 1Effective communication is essential for all organizations. It links the activities of the various parts of the organization and ensures that everyone is working towards a common goal. It is also extremely important for motivating employees. Staff need to know how they are getting on, what they are doing right and in which areas they could improve. Working alone can be extremely difficult and it is much easier if someone takes an interest and provides support. Employees need to understand why their job is important and how it contributes to the overall success of the firm. Personal communication should also include target setting. People usually respond well to goals, provided these are agreed between the manager and subordinate and not imposed. However, firms often have communications problems that can undermine their performance. In many cases, these problems occur because messages are passed on in an inappropriate way. There are, of course, several ways of conveying information to others in the organization. These include speaking to them directly, e-mailing, telephoning or sending a memo. The most appropriate method depends on what exactly it is you are communicating. For example, anything that is particularly sensitive or confidential, such as an employee’s appraisal, should be done face-to-face.One of the main problems for senior executives is that they do not have the time or resources needed to communicate effectively. In large companies, for example, it is impossible for senior managers to meet and discuss progress with each employee individually. Obviously this task can be delegated but at the cost of creating a gap between senior management and staff. As a result, managers are often forced to use other methods of communication, like memos or notes, even if they know these are not necessarily the most suitable means of passing on messages. The use of technology, such as e-mail, mobile phones and network systems, is speeding up communication immensely. However, this does not mean that more investment in technology automatically proves beneficial: systems can become outdated or employees may lack appropriate training. There are many communications tools now available but a firm cannot afford all of them. Even if it could, it does not actually need them all. The potential gains must be weighed up against the costs, and firms should realize that more communication does not necessarily mean better communication. As the number of people involved in an organization increase, the use of written communication rises even faster. Instead of a quick conversation to sort something out numerous messages can be passed backwards and forwards. This can lead to a tremendous amount of paperwork and is often less effective than face to face communication. When you are actually talking to someone, you can discuss things until you are happy they have understood and feedback is immediate. With written messages, however, you are never quite sure how it will be received. What you think you have said and what the other person thinks you have said can be very different.1. In the first paragraph the writer recommends that communication with staff should includeA. some feedback on their job performanceB. an explanation of how company targets have been set.C. information on promotion prospects within the company.D. an indication of which duties they can expect assistance with.2. According to the writer, the best way of achieving effective communication is toA. adapt the message to suit a particular audience.B. make the content of messages brief and direct.C. select the most suitable means of conveying a particular message.D. ensure that information is targeted at the appropriate group of people.3. What does the writer say about the communication options available to senior managers?A. Sending memos to staff is one of the most efficient methods.B. It is important to find the time to discuss certain matters with staff.C. They should increase the range of options that they use.D. Getting junior managers to talk to staff can create different problems.4. What advice is given about the communication tools made available by technology?A. Aim to limit staff use of certain communication tools.B. Evaluate them in terms of the expenditure involved.C. Select them on the basis of the facilities they offer.D. Encourage more staff to attend training courses in their use.5. According to the writer, a problem with written communication is thatA. the message can be interpreted differently to what was intended.B. it can be easy for people to ignore the contents of a written message.C. most people are more comfortable with face-to-face communication.D. it is possible for correspondence to get lost within a large organization.Reading 2Tariffs ( 关税) may be used simply to obtain revenue. In some developing countries, revenue tariffs provide an important part of the government’s in come. Often, however, tariffs are protective, and are designed to carry out a particular economic policy. They may help to reduce a balance of payment deficit or to protect an infant industry against strong international competition from older corporations. A revenue tariff will always provide some protection, and a protection tariff will produce some revenue. Therefore, it is difficult to distinguish between revenue and protective tariffs from economic evidence alone. Many different types of non-tariff barriers have been used, but the best known of these are quota systems ( 配额制) . A quota is an upper limit which is set on imports of a commodity for a fixed period of time. Some quotas apply to the physical quantities of particular goods, whereas others are based on the total value of all imports. In the latter case, the quotas are usually combined with a system of exchange control in an attempt to prevent a balance of payment deficit. Quotas are also used to protect domestic industries. Under most quota systems, importers must obtain government licences for the goods they wish to import. It should be noted that a quota system is always protectionist and provides no revenues to the country. When a tariff is imposed on an import, the direct impact on price is to raise it by the amount of the tariff. Market factors, however, can modify this effect. Hence, the final price increase due to a tariff may be less than, equal to, or more than the amount of the tariff. In contrast, the impact of a quota on price is much harder to predict. The effects are particularly uncertain with goods which are not produced at all domestically. For instance, many countries do not have their own car industry, so that an import quota can cause a considerable shift in automobile prices.1. What’s the main purpose of imposing tariffs?_________A. Prohibit imports.B. Reduce a balance of payment deficit.C. Promote competition.D. Raise revenue and protect domestic industries.2. They may help to reduce a balance of payment deficit or to protect an infantindustry against strong international competition from older corporations.“Infant ”means_____.A. strongB. newC. childD. manufacturing3. In the latter case, the quotas are usually combined with a system of exchangecontrol in an attempt to prevent a balance of payment deficit. “The latter case ” refers to ______.A. quotas which are set on imports of a commodityB. quotas which apply to physical quantities of goodsC. quotas which are based on the total value of importsD. quotas which provide revenue to the country4. The final increase due to a tariff may be_______.A. less than the amount of the tariffB. equal to the amount of the tariffC. more than the amount of the tariffD. All of the above5. According to the passage, which statement is not true ?A. The best known of non-tariff barriers are quota system.B. The impact of a quota on price is much harder to predict.C. The effects of quota on price are certain with goods which are also produced domestically.D. After seeing how e-mails have come back to haunt so many executives in court, I'm wondering what should one avoid e-mailing?I just read about a big Hollywood star who decided that he was going to seek a divorce from his spouse of 22 years. He didn't sit down to talk to her about this. He didn't even give her a call. Nope, he e-mailed her about it.Unfortunately, he's not the only one who has broken his vows through e-mail. Many of us have e-mailed someone over something that was far too important, far too nuanced, far too personal toe-mail. Below is a list of times not to hit send. For more, check out The Boss's Survival Guide by Rosner, Halcrow and Levins (McGraw Hill, 2000).Don't e-mail big stuff. Don't e-mail an announcement about a merger, acquisition, reorganization or downsizing. If it's a big deal then you need to tell your people face-to-face. Reading a major announcement in an e-mail isn't as bad as reading it for the first time in the newspaper, but it's close.Don't e-mail policy changes that will generate questions. Changes in sick leave or vacation time policies or benefits coverage will generate questions. As a general rule, anything that hits someone's wallet should be explained face-to-face.Stop e-mails that become a tennis match. We've all known e-mail debates that have volleyed back and forth more times than a tennis ball at Wimbledon. If an e-mail goes back and forth more than three times — and especially if the distribution list gets bigger — that's a sure sign that the discussion is bigger than e-mail. Call a halt and bring people together to resolve the issue.Don't put anything confidential in e-mail. That includes: Salaries, comments about performance, etc.Don't put anything in e-mail that you don't want to see in the newspaper or hear in court. Now that organizations as diverse as Microsoft and the White House have found their internal e-mail printed in newspapers and read in court, you know that even "private" e-mail is not really private. Nor can it be easily deleted.Which leads to the big issue — are you hiding behind your e-mail? Some managers rely one-mail in lieu of face-to-face conversation. It's especially tempting when people are off-site; such as telecommuters, vendors, or independent contractors. E-mail is more easily misinterpreted because it doesn't allow for give-and-take discussion and people aren't guided by facial expressions and vocal intonations. And the more dependent you are on e-mail, the more mysterious you become. Even theWizard of Oz learned that being the man behind the curtain only gets you so far. Go down the hall, hang out in the lunchroom, or pick up the phone at least some of the time.Follow these tips and what you are trying to say won't get divorced from the way that you say it.1. According to the passage, which of the following statements is not true?A. Even "private" e-mail is not really private.B. E-mails are more easily misinterpreted.C. “Private” emails cannot be easily deleted.D. No “private” emails can be really del eted.2. The fact that organizations as diverse as Microsoft and the White House have found their internal e-mail printed in newspapers and read in court indicates that .A. people should not use emails in their work.B. even "private" e-mail is not really private.C. emails have brought people too much trouble and inconvenience.D. emails will lead to a lot of law suits.3. According to the passage, all the following should be explained face-to-face except _______.A. anything that hits someone's walletB. Changes in the time of conferencesC. changes in sick leaveD. changes in holiday time policies5. The best title for this passage would be_________________.A. The Importance of E-mail in BusinessB. The Popularity of E-mail in BusinessC. E-mail Always a Must in Business CommunicationD. E-mail Not Always the Best MessengerPassage TwoEconomic "globalization" is a historical process, the result of human innovation and technological progress. It refers to the increasing integration of economies around the world, particularly through trade and financial flows. The term sometimes also refers to the movement ofpeople (labor) and knowledge (technology) across international borders. There are also broader cultural, political and environmental dimensions of globalization that are not covered here.At its most basic, there is nothing mysterious about globalization. The term has come into common usage since the 1980s, reflecting technological advances that have made it easier and quicker to complete international transactions—both trade and financial flows. It refers to an extension beyond national borders of the same market forces that have operated for centuries at all levels of human economic activity—village markets, urban industries, or financial centers.Markets promote efficiency through competition and the division of labor—the specialization that allows people and economies to focus on what they do best. Global markets offer greater opportunity for people to tap into more and larger markets around the world. It means that they can have access to more capital flows, technology, cheaper imports, and larger export markets. But markets do not necessarily ensure that the benefits of increased efficiency are shared by all. Countries must be prepared to embrace the policies needed, and in the case of the poorest countries may need the support of the international community as they do so.()6. Globalization is .A. a novelty in recent years.B. mysterious as it hasn‟t been well known by the majority of people.C. not new to peopleD. a historical event.()7. About 40 per cent of the population’s food and a largeproportion ofthe raw materials used by industry have to be imported. In 1980 exports of goods and services were equal to about 25 per cent of the Gross National Product. In the exports of manufactures, the UK,资料仅供参考in recent years, has done less well than her major competitors. The UK’s share of the value of the main manufacturing countries’exports fell from 16 percent in 1980 to about 9 per cent in 1999. This was due to the fact that the volume of UK exports increased at an annual average rate of 5 per cent, only about one-half the rate achieved by the main manufacturing countries as a whole and about one-third the rate for Japan.Changes in the commodity composition of exports have been very small in recent years. The share of manufactured goods has increased slightly while the share of basic materials has declined. There has been a steady decline in the share of textiles and an increase in the share of chemicals in total exports. Over the next decade the possibility of exporting North Sea Oil and the diminishing dependence on imported oil should have a beneficial effect on the UK’s visible trade balance. The most striking change in the geographical distribution of UK exports in recent years has been the swing away from the traditional Commonwealth markets and a growing dependence on the market in Western Europe. Exports to Western Europe accounted for about 34 per cent of UK exportsin 1989 but by this share had grown to资料仅供参考nearly 60 per cent. This is much in line with developments in world trade as a whole, because trade between industrialized countries has been the fastest growing sector of world trade. The other important development is the growing importance of the markets in the oil-exporting countries.()1. The export of manufactures of U.K. during recent years .A. has risen.B. has done better than the major competitors.C. has fallenD. has done less well that developing countries.() 2. The export of textiles .A. has declinedB. has declined sharplyC. has increased slightlyD. has increased sharply() 3. The export of basic materials .A. has increasedB. has declinedC. has remained steadyD. has little changed()4. What is the most striking change in UK exports?A. The swing away from the资料仅供参考traditional Commonwealthmarkets and a growingdependence on the market inWestern Europe.B. Changes in the commodity composition of exports.C. The increase of the share ofmanufactured goods and thedecline of the share of basicmaterials.D. the beneficial effect of the export of oil on the UK’s visible trade balance.()5. Which statement is not true?A. UK is exporting more to Western Europe.B. trade between UK and WesternEurope has been the fastestgrowing sector of world trade.C. UK will possibly import less oil over the next decade.D. UK is exporting more chemicals.Passage TwoIs a quiet revolution under way in the nation’s shopping habits? Are we gradually allowing an increasingly select number of large companies to take care of all our basic requirements? The supermarket chains certainly hope so. ‘People don’t have the time to shop around any more. If they’re happy资料仅供参考with the quality of a company’s service, then they’re likely to buy other product types from them as well,’says Jim Austin, an industry analyst. With the major supermarket brands such as Tesco, J Sainsbury and Asda already offering financial services, credit cards, own-label clothing, mobile phones, and cut-price electrical goods including computers, Austin believes that the supermarkets’diversification is set to continue.‘The UK retail food market is saturated,so their only real prospect of growth is eitherto enter foreign markets or diversify into new markets at home..’Tesco and J Sainsbury have done both. Having already bought foreign subsidiaries, both large supermarket chains have set up their own banks in order to offer customers financial services such as personal loans, mortgages and savings accounts.Together, the two new banks took over £2bn of customer deposits within the first year of trading. ‘They are winning business by using a lower cost base to offer their customers better interest rates on savings than traditional banks,’ says Austin. However, there are question marks over long-term profitability. The traditional providers say there is bound to come a point资料仅供参考when the new banks will eventually want towiden margins and boost profits. ‘When theystart to raise prices, they might create badpublicity, which could hurt their brand,’ saysone observer. ‘How will a major supermarket react, for instance, when it is faced withhaving to repossess a regular shopper’shome?’Shoppers, however, do not share thesefears. A recent survey of 1,000 people by brand consultants Cook & Pearson concludesthat shoppers will continue to buy a widerrange of goods and services fromsupermarkets. Many people said that theywould be prepared to buy a supermarketown-label car or even a house from a supermarket-branded estate agent. Interestwas also shown in combining a food shoppingtrip with a visit to a supermarket dentist.Loyalty schemes are another incentivefor customers. ‘Most supermarkets now offer bonus points with every purchase. Thesepoints add up to free air miles or cashdiscounts, so it really pays to stay loyal to thebrand in all its diversified forms,’ says Austin. ()6 Why are the large UK supermarket chains diversifying? _____________.A. Because the retail food marketin the UK has been occupiedby foreign companies.资料仅供参考B. Because the retail food marketin the UK is saturated.C. Because the retail food marketin the UK is quite small.D. Because diversification intonew markets can promote thegrowth of the retail foodmarket in the UK.()7 How are the supermarkets able toattract business in the bankingsector? ____________.A. Because they can offer moreservices.B. Because they can offer morevarieties of commodities.C. Because they can offer betterinterest rates.D. Because they can offer free carparking for customers.()8 What are the risks involved with brandstretching? _________________.A. There may come a point whenproviders will want to raise prices.B. There may come a point whenproviders lose all their banking business.C. There may come a point whencustomers lose theirconfidence in the bankingsector.D. All the UK large supermarkets资料仅供参考will have to close all their banking business. ()9 How do the large UK supermarket chains encourage brand loyalty? ___________.A. By offering free samples ofcommodities.B. By offering a wide range ofgoods and services.C. By offering convenient bankingservices.D. By offering loyalty schemes likebonus points.
