While more Americans are getting married today than ever before, the divorce rateis also disturbingly on the rise(one divorce for every three marriages last year).51Women’s easy and convenient life in USAFor most people, life is easier and more comfortable than ever before. Convenience foods from the supermarket simplify shopping and cooking. Household appliances like the cleaner and the washing machine have made housework much easier to do. Released from these household chores, many wives have found jobs outside the home. 52 Average American families getting smallFamilies, too, are simpler today. 53 With our frequent changes, relatives have spread over a wide area, the parents retiring to Florida or Arizona and the young people, after they marry, going wherever their jobs or their interests take them. Women have their own freedom.54 While attending college, they often live away from home, sometimes far from their parents or their relatives. After college, they move to the city, finda job, and set up “bachelor” apartment. This is the era of women’s liberation. Independence leading to family break-upBut all this freedom and wealth had an unforeseen and in some respects an extreme ly bad effect on marriage. Men and women, no longer dependent on each other for food and maintenance, find it harder to accept the responsibilities. 55 On the other hand, there is a growing trend today for couples in trouble to try to save their marriage by consulting a professional adviser. He listens patiently while they talk, knowing that only through self-understanding can they solve their problems.A. Young adult women have new freedom, too.B. No marriage for many people nowadays.C.

It was a cold night in Washington, D. C., and I was heading back to the hotel when a man approached me. He asked if l would give him some money so he could get something to eat. I'd read the signs: "Don't give money to beggars." So I shook my head andkept walking.I wasn't prepared for a reply, but he said, "I really am homeless and I really am hungry! You can come with me and watch me eat!" But I kept on walking. The incident bothered me for the rest of the week. I had money in my pocket and it wouldn't have killed me to hand over a buck or two even if he had been lying. Flying back to Anchorage, I couldn't help thinking of him. I tried to rationalize (找借口)my failure to help by assuming government agencies, churches and charities were there to feed him. Besides, you're not supposed to give money to beggars.Somewhere over Seattle, I started to write my weekly garden column for The Anchorage Daily News. Out of the blue, I came up with an idea. Bean's Cafe, the soup kitchen in Anchorage, feeds hundreds of hungry Alaskans every day. Why not try to get all my readers to plant one row in their gardens dedicated (奉献)to Bean's? Dedicate a row and take it down to Bean's. Clean and simple.Folks would "fax me or call when they took something in. Those who only grew flowers donated them. Food for the spirit. In 1995, the Garden Writers Association of America held their annual convention in Anchorage and after learning of Anchorage's program, Plant a Row for Bean's became Plant a Row For The Hungry. The original idea was to have every member of the Garden Writers Association of America write or talk about planting a row for the hungry sometime during the month of April. As more and more people started working with the Plant a Row concept, new variations cropped up. Many companies gave free seed to customers and displayed the logo, which also appeared in national gardening public actions. Row markers with the Plant a Row logo were distributed to gardeners to set apart their "Row for the Hungry." Garden editor Joan Jackson, backed by The San Jose Mercury News and California's nearly year-round growing season, raised more than 30,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables her first year, and showed GWAA how the program could really work.Texas fruit farms donated food to their local food bank after being inspired by Plant a Row. Today the program continues to thrive and grow.I am shocked that millions of Americans are threatened by hunger. If every gardener in America---and we're seventy million strong---plants one row for the hungry,we can make quite a decrease in the number of neighbors who don't have enough to eat. Maybe then I will stop feeling guilty about abandoning a hungry man I could have helped.68. What does the underlines phrase "out of the blue" mean?A. a bit disappointedB. unexpectedlyC. as a matter of factD. attentively69. The program has been supported by many farmers, journalists and people in differentfields for many years. They usually donate many things to it except .A. moneyB. flowersC. seedsD. beans70. Which is WRONG according to the passages?A. In the eyes of the masses, the program can really help the people in need.B. Nowadays, the program is no longer a regional one, and it arouses the attentionof many farmers, gardeners and journalists.C. It occurred to the author that they could run such a program the moment he gave the beggar nothing.D. The author felt relieved and surprised when he saw the program turned into a nation-wide one.71. Which do you think is the best title to the passages?A. Plant a row for the hungryB. Build up from nothingC. A story of a columnistD. 2013高考英语(阅读理解)倒计时冲刺50天(11)及答案阅读理解------【主旨大意题】易错点(2012·课标全国高考,B篇)Honey from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar,it is also delicious。

Most people, and many animals, like eating it.However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees' nest and take the honey from it.Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them。

In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper—a little bird called a honey guide。

The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax in the beehives(蜂房).The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees’ nest. So,when it finds a suitable nest,it looks for someone to help it.The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people。

*********************************************************结束I really hadn't meant to yell(吼叫)at them. But that grey afternoon saw it just as my son and daughter were making a terrible mess on the floor in the kitchen. With a tiresome report to write,I felt bothered at my desk.Suddenly, it occurred to me that my kids were at fault.A voice inside me insisted that I do something quickly.“OK,you two here.but what an awful thing you are attempting!” shouting ang rily, I made for them, while it became evident that the boy wanted no part of me.“Get away from us!” he shouted back, there being expression of support from his sister. All of a sudden,I found the fault in myself.Quickly I shaped my hands into pincers (螃蟹螯)and crawled towards them,“Crabby(似螃蟹的)Daddy is here Ha,Ha,Ha,he likes to yell at children, and then eat them!” My son continued to keep me away, but now he was laughing and crying at the same time.My mission to repair the damage caused by my yelling seemed to work well.Still,I regretted not having controlled myself first in a right way that my children could do after.Need I let them know how badly they were acting by blaming? This is a lesson that serves myself. It only shows just how to get rid of something(ill-feelings,responsibility)by blaming others. It's not my “best self”.We have to search for our “best self” when with our children. They don't needperfect parents, but they do need parents who are always trying to get better. Here,I'm reminded of the words of a great thinker,“When a man lives with God,his voice shall be as sweet as the murmur of the brook…” Then,in our lifetime, couldn't we always speak to our kids in such a sweet voice since, most of us consider them as the most precious in the world? And before we reach this level, what should we do when we come across various difficult cases with our children?56.The author couldn't help yelling at his kids this time probably because______.A.the weather was so unpleasant B.a Daddy has his right to do soC.the kids didn't ask him to join them D.he was tired of his boring work57.Which of the following made the author aware of his fault?A.No obvious reason.B.The children’s reaction.C.His self-control.D.The mess made by the children.58.According to the passage the author will in another similar situation.A.play a crab again like this time B.apologize to kids in a sincere way C.avoid blaming kids in a hurry D.beat them up about such things 59.What will the writer go on to write about in the next paragraph(s)?A.How to behave ourselves properly when kids are at fault.B.How to blame our children in a more interesting way.C.How to deal with the terrible mess made by our kids.D.How to persuade children to do what they are told to.To switch or not to switch, that is the question.Google’s announcement of its Nexus One smartphone(智能手机)happened over a week ago and I’m still receiving lots of e-mails from readers asking the same question: Should they give up their iPhone for the Nexus One?Some people with iPhones, disappointed by American Telephone&Telegraph’s inadequate service and the high monthly cost, are wondering if they have really got something to replace it.Does the Nexus One offer the functions that Apple has led them to expect?I’m on the fence myself, even though I never thought I’d be interested in anything but the iPhone. From my experience using the Nexus One, and from talking to people who have made the change, it’s not necessarily about the differences between the iPhone and the Nexus One.The phones are extremely similar in design and general feel.Instead, the decision can be made based on the software(软件) services you use on your desktop. My friend Chad Dickerson received a pre-launch Nexus One from Google three weeks ago.He said Google’s phone feels connected to certain services on the Web in a way the iPhone doesn’t.“Compared to the iPhone, the Google phone feels like it’s part of the Internet to me,” he said.“If you live in a Google world, you have that world in your pocket in a way that’s cleaner and more connected than the iPhone.”Personally, the phones work perfectly with their own software, but both of them don’t make an effort to play well with other services.60.Why are some iPhone users expecting a new type of phone?A.Because their old ones are out of date.B.Because they accept Google’s announcement.C.Because of the limited service and high cost.D.Because of the terrible software they can use..61.What’s the author’s attitude towards the new phones in the third paragraph?A.Negative B.Neutral C.IndifferentD.Positive62.In Chad Dickerson’s opinion, the Nexus One is ________ the iPhone.A.better than B.worse than C.as good as D.as bad as63.The best title of the passage might be ________.A.Apple’s New SmartphoneB.Torn Between Two PhonesC.Good Services MatterD.Google’s New Smartphone。

2013届高考英语考前50天秘笈 阅读理解(2).pdf

英语:2013届高考生 考前50天秘笈 阅读理解(2) (限时20分钟) (A) Planking: a brief history The rules are simple: you must lie face down, palms(手掌)flat against your sides, with your feet together and pointing at the ground. Points are awarded for an original location and for the number of onlookers and participants involved. 1 Without a photo, you’re just a person lying down. This is planking, described variously as a global participatory art project, a “meaningless internet craze”. It began 14 years ago with a pair of bored kids. Gary Clarkson, then 15, and his friend Christian Langdon, 12, would perform the plank in public places, amusing one another and puzzling onlookers. 2 The game was a pointless way for the boys to pass the time. As Clarkson puts it, “It was just a really stupid, random thing to do. ” For its first 10 years planking spread very slowly, from Clarkson and Langdon to their friends at school and, after a while, on to other kids from the neighborhood. 3 Soon, they had a few thousand followers. Photographs of plankers came in from all over the world: American plankers on top of their televisions, British plankers in trees, and Europeans on country roads and steep riverbanks. Then things got really interesting. A few days later, a mass gathering of plankers attracted more than 100 people. The planking in the photos posted to Facebook became riskier and stranger. One brave airport worker performed the plank in the engine fan of a jet plane.4 Some people have linked the practice to the 1995 video for the Radiohead song, “Just”. In the video, a man lies down on a busy London road and a crowd of strangers gather to try to understand and help him. He refuses to move, or to tell them why he’s lying there. He tells them—but not us, the viewers—and all we see is that now the entire crowd is lying down on the pavement as well. 5“People generally think you’re mad, ”as creator Gary Clarkson puts it. “That’s sort of the point.” A. You must, of course, have somebody take a photo. B. Many people believe planking is a good way to pass the time. C. At that time, it was known simply as the Lying Down Game. D. We can read about planking all of the time on Internet websites. E. Whether the video is the inspiration or not, it helps us understand the spirit of planking. F. Then, in 2007, when the pair created a Facebook group for their game, the pace accelerated. G. It’s not clear—and Clarkson and Langdon don’t remember—where exactly the idea for planking came from. (B) “Look it up in the dictionary” is the usual comment when people are in doubt about the meaning or spelling of a word. Dictionaries are considered the final authority on these matters as well as on pronunciations and other facts about a word. Until a few hundred years ago, however, people could not “look it up” because there were no English dictionaries. The ancient Greeks and Romans and the scholars of the Middle Ages had made lists of Latin and Greek words. 6 The first great English dictionary listing both common and uncommon words was written by Samuel Johnson in 1755. In America, the most famous name in dictionary writing is that of Noah Webster. He stressed American rather than British ways of speaking. His great dictionary, which first appeared in 1828, has been republished many times. 7 The latest edition is still considered “the” dictionary. It defines over 450, 000 words, including radar, television and many others undreamed of by Webster. 8 The huge ones that rest on stands in libraries are called unabridged, meaning “not shortened”. They tell not only a word’s meaning and spelling but also its pronunciation, origin, history, part of speech, grammatical forms, and ways of use. The smaller ones do not provide all this information. 9 A bilingual dictionary, such as a Spanish-English dictionary, translates words from onelanguage into another. A study has shown that themore scared you are of spiders, the bigger they can seem to you.Researchers from Ohio State University, US, gathered together 57participants who were all extremely afraid of spiders, according to sciencedaily. com. During an eight-week-long experiment, they asked participants to look at five differently sized tarantulas (狼蛛) and documented how the participants reacted to them. Each tarantula was kept in an open glass box. Participants had to approach the box slowly. Once they were standing next to the box, they were asked to guide the spider around the tank by touching it with a stick, then with a shorter stick. In the meantime, they were asked to rate their fear level on a scale (级别) of 0 to 100.After every time they met a tarantula, participants would have to estimate its size by drawing a single line on a piece of paper. The length of the line showed how big they thought the tarantula was from the tips of its front legs to the tips of its back legs.Researchers saw a clear connection between the estimated size of the animal and the fear level of participants.“If one is afraid of spiders. . . one tends to perceive spiders as bigger than they really are. That may feed the fear, foster that fear, and make it difficult to overcome, ”said Michael Vasey, professor at Ohio State University and the leader of the study. The study could help doctors design more effective treatments for people toovercome their fears. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the younger people learn a second language, the greater the effect is.A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of“early bilinguals”who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference is.“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language, ”said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible, ”he said, “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas. ”The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world, ”explained the scientists.5. The main subject talked about in this passage is _______.A. science on learning a second languageB. man’ s ability of learning a second languageC. language can help brain powerD. language learning and maths study6. Most people will agree that the thatched roof is an essential part of the attraction of the English countryside.Thatching is in fact the oldest of all the building crafts practiced in the British Isles. Although thatch has always been used for cottages and farm buildings, it wasonce used for castles and churches, too.Thatching is a solitary(独自的) craft, which often runs in families. The craft of thatching as it is practiced today has changed very little since the Middle Ages. Over 800 full-time thatchers are employed in England and Wales today, maintaining and renewing the old roofs as well as thatching newer houses. Many property owners choose thatch not only for its beauty but because they know it will keep them cool in summer and warm in winter. In fact, if we look at developing countries, over half the world lives under thatch, but they all do it in different ways. People in developing countries are often unwilling to go back to traditional materials and would prefer modern buildings. However, they may lack the money to allow them to import the necessary materials. Their temporary mud huts with thatched roofs of wild grass often only last six months. Thatch which has been done in the British way lasts from twenty to sixty years and is an effective defence against the heat.9. Which of the following remains a unique feature of the English countryside?A. Cottages with thatched roofs.B. Churches with cottages around them.C. Rolling hills with pretty farm buildings.D. Narrow streets lined with pink or white houses.10. What do we know about thatching as a craft?A. It is quite different from what it used to be.B. 高考英语 考前50天(阅读理解)训练秘笈(3)

2013高考英语考前50天(阅读理解)训练秘笈(3)及答案阅读理解(A)Are some people born clever and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To some degree our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and different surroundings. Thus the limits of persons’ intelligence are fixed at birth, and whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This idea, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.It is easy to show that intelligence is to some degree something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be intelligent. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from population, it is likely that th eir degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two twins, they are very likely to be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this shows that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in touch with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.16. If a child is born with low intelligence, he can _______.A. become a geniusB. not reach his intelligence in his lifeC. reach his intelligence limits in rich surroundingsD. still become a genius if he should be given special education17. In Paragra ph 2, the underlined sentence “if we take two unrelated people at random from population” means “_______. ”A. if we pick any two personsB. if we take out two different personsC. if we choose two persons who have relationsD. if we choose two persons with different intelligence18. The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately shows _______.A. the part that birth playsB. the importance of their relationsC. the importance of their intelligenceD. the role of environment on intelligence19. The best title of the passage can be “_______”.A. SurroundingsB. IntelligenceC. Dependence on EnvironmentD. Effect of Education(B)When Russell Lyons volunteered for the first time, he read Goodnight Moon to a class of San Diego pre schoolers. And it wasn’t reading—he’d memorized the book and was reciting it out loud. He was 4. Still, he said it felt good up there, in front of the other kids, lending a hand. He wanted more of that feeling.Thirteen years later, he’s getting a lot of it. He’s on a five-month road trip across America—not sightseeing, but volunteering. The University City resident has spent time at an animal reserve in Utah, a women’s shelter in St. Louis, a soup kitchen in New York, a retirement home in Tucson. This we ek he’s in Los Angeles, at a program that supports disabled youth.“I just like helping people and feeling that something I do is making adifference, ” he said. He resists the idea t hat his “Do Good Adventure” is all that unusual. It bothers him that the media often describes young people as lazy, self-centered and materialistic. So he sees his trip as a chance to make a statement, too. “About 55 percent of teens do volunteer work, higher than the rate of adults, ” he said, according to a 2002 study. “Not everybody knows that. ”Of course, some teens do volunteer work because it looks impressive on their college applications. Lyons said he mentioned his trip on his submissions. But charity work is a habit with him. Even before the cross country trip, he was volunteering about 200 hours a year at various places. He’s made sandwiches for homeless familie s in Washington D. C. . He’s taught math to fifth-graders in Cuernavaca, Mexico. He gets some of that drive from his mother, Leslye Lyons, who has been involved in nonprofits for much of her life. She was there when her son “read” to the preschoolers—a memory of hers “that will never go away. ”20. What did Russell Lyons think of his first volunteering?A. Creative.B. Impressive.C. Persuasive.D. Imaginative.21. The third paragraph is meant to _______.A. indicate Russell Lyons is working as a volunteerB. introduce some tourist attractions across AmericaC. appeal for volunteers to offer help to those in needD. show volunteers are needed i n all parts of America22.
