Do you just blow all your money as soon as youhave it?Deepti: Well, when I was growing up in India, my parents were, you know, very open and free with money. So if I wanted something, they would say, “OK, you can go ahead and take this.” And I think that spoiled me a little bit, because I would just, whatever I wanted, the importance of saving I’d take the money and go buy it, and I didn’t really realizemoney. So when I grew up, I was twenty-two, and I left India to go to Singapore, and Iwas on my own, and I had a scholarship, and my father would, on the phone, he wouldtalking ask me, “So, how much money have you saved?” And I was like, “What are youabout? I’m not saving any money.” A nd he got married, and he wanted me to startsaving money. It was very hard for me to save money because I would go out and walknd be past a shop that had clothes and go, “Oh, I want that,” and I would go in, get it, areally happy. It made me happy, you know. But, I think after a year or so when I realizedthat I had to take care of myself, not only now, but let’s say a year from now, and a yearo start saving so from now I might not have the money that I’m getting now, so I have tthat I’m not, you know, no the streets without any money. So I started saving, but I stillhad a hard time with it. My sister is very good. She is very stingy with money, you know.o on, spend the money. You And when I was in India, I would tell her, “Oh come on, gknow, if you want something, go get it.” And she would always tell me,” You should think about our parents. They’re making all this money for us, but we shouldn’t spend it just like that.” I think now I am a little better about s a ving, but not very good. Not as good as Icould be.Joe:I think I’m very good at handling money. I save when I need to; I spend when I wouldlike to. I try to keep control of my funds so that I don’t end up in situations where I don’have money to pay for basic necessities. But I do feel that you should spend money thatyou have while you have it and while you’re here, as opposed to saving it for a rainy daythat never comes.Interviewer: And saving, what are you trying to do to save? Have you made a plan?Lisa: I have made a plan. I, what I do now is just take out a certain amount of money atthe beginning and save it. I just put it away before I even really see it. Some ancient people believed that lightning and thunder were the weapons of the gods. In reality, lightning is a flow of electricity formed high above the earth. The American scientist and statesman, Benjamin Franklin, was the first to show the connection between electricity and lightning in 1752. In the same year he also built the first lightning rod. This device protects buildings from damage by lightning. Scientists estimate that there are about 2 billion flashes of lightning per year. Lightning hits the Empire State Building in New York City 30 to 48 times a year. In the United States alone it kills an average of one person every day. The safest place to be in case of an electrical storm is in a closed car. Outside, one should go to low ground and should not get under trees. Also, one should stay out of water and away from metal fences. Inside a house, people should avoid open doorways and windows and should net touch wires or metal things.1.A.They thought it was the weapon of the gods.B.They thought it was electricity.C.They thought it was firework of the gods.D.They thought it was a mystery.正确答案:A 涉及知识点:听力2.A.He made the first lightning rod.B.He invented electricity.C.He built the Empire State Building.D.He prevented lightning from hitting cars.正确答案:A 涉及知识点:听力3.A.A swimming pool.B.A high ground.C.Under a tree.D.A closed car.正确答案:D 涉及知识点:听力听力原文:China has agreed to share 20 virus samples from poultry killed by bird flu, in an effort to help scientists trying to develop a vaccine, the WHO said. WHO officials in Beijing said Chinese authorities had granted WHO’s request for up to 20 live samples, which will be analyzed in international laboratories to improve understanding of the killer virus. The two sides are working out the logistics, including how to ship the samples and which lab they will go to. The shipment is “significantly larger” than the last one China provided, which consisted of five live viruses from poultry in 2004. WHO enjoyed good cooperation with China’s Ministry of Health, which has shared viruses from human cases, but confronted problems trying to convince the Ministry of Agriculture to share samples. Through negotiations, the two sides worked out an arrangement that will give the scientists due credit and involve them in subsequent research whenever possible. WHO officials expressed the hope that the agreement could open the way for more regular sharing of viruses, which is important to determine the different types of strains of the deadly bird flu virus that exist and how they affect humans differently. China has reported 34 outbreaks among poultry since the beginning of last year and 15 confirmed human cases of bird flu, resulting in 10 deaths. The virus has killed more than 100 people worldwide since 2003, mostly in Asia. 四级标准听力测试模拟三SectionB答案解析

四级标准听力测试模拟三SectionB答案解析

Section B Passage One Human beings enjoy challenges. Many of them like physical challenges. They ask themselves questions like these: How fast can I run? How high can I climb? How deep can I dive? How far can I swim? How long can I hold my breath? How much can I lift? How high can I jump? Because people enjoy challenges, they like to play sports and watch other people play sports. They like climbing, running, diving, lifting, jumping, and so on. Every four years millions of people all over the world enjoy the international sports competition called the Olympics. There are challenges that are not physical challenges. There are social and intellectual challenges, too. Leonardo da Vinci, who lived in Italy during the fifteenth century, enjoyed every possible challenge. He was an artist and painted the well known picture, the Mona Lisa. He was an engineer who made plans for a city with roads under the street for traffic. He was an inventor who invented a device to let people breathe under water. He was a scientist, and he learned a great deal about human structure. Another kind of challenge faced the Egyptians between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago when they decided to build the first pyramid. They used six million tons of rock. That is enough to build a ten foot wall around all of France. Four hundred thousand men worked for twenty years to build it. So, for thousands of years, people accepted challenges. Today we still have many challenges before us. Medical science faces the challenges of conquering the many diseases which still attack human beings. Engineers and planners must build new cities and new kinds of transportation. Scientists must develop new forms of energy. And many of us are interested in the challenge of space. We live in an age of challenge. Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard. 26. When people participate in sporting activities, what kind of challenge do they face? 【解析】选[B]。

A thirsty goat came to the same well, and seeing the fox, inquired if the water was good. Concealing his sad situation under a merry guise, the fox sang high praise of the water, saying it was excellent beyond measure, and encouraging him to descend. The goat, mindful only of his thirst, thoughtlessly jumped down, but just as he drank, the fox informed him of the difficulty they were both in and suggested a scheme for their common escape. “If,” said he, “you will place your forefeet upon the wall and bend your head, I will run up your back and escape, and will help you out afterwards.” The goat readily assented and the fox leaped upon his back. Steadying himself with the goat’s horns, he safely reached the mouth of the well and made off as fast as he could. When the goat blamed him for breaking his promise, he turned around and cried out, “You foolish old fellow! If you had as many brains in your head as you have hairs in your beard, you would never have gone down before you had inspected the way up, nor have exposed yourself to dangers from which you had no means of escape.” 16. How did the fox come out of the well?17. Why did the fox sing high praise of the water?18. What does the story try to tell us?1.A.He jumped to the mouth of the well from the goat’s back.B.He came out by pulling the horn of the goat.C.He climbed to the mouth of the well by himself.D.He swam out of the well when the water was rising.正确答案:A解析:短文提到,狐狸跳上了山羊的背。

He hardly ever did any work, and spent most of his time enjoying himself. One summer he bought a big motor boat. As soon as it was ready to go to sea, he telephoned to one of the girls he had met somewhere, and invited her for a trip in his new motor boat. It was the beginning of many successful invitations of this kind. The way Jack used to invite a girl for a trip in his boat was like this: he would begin by saying, "Hello, Laura (or whatever the girl's name was), I have just bought a beautiful new motor-boat, and I would like to take you out for a trip in it."The girl's answer was usually cautious, because everybody in that part of the country knew Jack's reputation with girls. She would say something like this: "Oh, really? That's nice. What name have you given to the boat?"Jack would then answer, "Well, Laura, I have named it after you.”Of course, the girl would feel very proud that Jack hadchosen her name for the boat out of the names of all his many girl-friends, and she would think that Jack must really love her. She would therefore be quite willing to accept his invitation to go for a trip in his motor-boat.It would not be until she got down to the harbor and actually saw the boat that she would understand how cleverly Jack had tricked her. Because there in neat gold letters on the boat she would see its name — "After You."14. What’s the name of the new motor boat? (B)15. Which of the following statements is true? (C)16. When would the girl feel very proud? (C)Passage IIIQuestions 17 to 20 are based on the following passage: In the early 1800's a new kind of power changed transportation and trade along the Mississippi River. This power was steam. People already knew how to use steam engines to run machines. Some people wanted to move boats in the same way. The first steamboat to travel on the Mississippi was the "New Orleans. " It made its first trip in 1811. It was a great success, and by 1819 there were 191 steamboats traveling on the river. In the past the farmers whose products went to other parts of the country used the steamboats. The manufacturers whose trade depended on cheap and easy transportation used the steamboats, too. Today many tourists come to travel on steamboats.17. What was the new kind of power in the early 1800’s? (C)18. On what river did the steamboat "New Orleans" travel?(B)19. Today, who use steamboats? (C)20. How many steam-boats were traveling on the river by1819?(D)Part C Compound DictationLife gets noisier every day and very few people can be free from noise of some sort or another. It doesn't (S1) matter where you live —in the middle of a modem city, or a (S2) faraway village –the chances are that you'll be (S3) disturbed by jet aeroplanes, (S4) transistor radios, oil-powered engines, etc. We seem to be getting used to noise, too. Some people feel quite lonely without (S5) background music while they're working.(S6) Scientific tests have shown that total silence can be a very(S7) frightening experience for a human being. However, (S8) some people enjoy listening to pop music which is very loud, and this can do harm to their ears. The noise level in some discos is far above the usual safety level for heavy industrial areas. One recent report about noise and concentration has suggested that although a lot of people say that any noise disturbs their concentration,(S9) what really affects their ability to concentrate is a change in the level of noise. It goes on to say (S10) that a background noise which doesn't change too much, such as music, may even help people to concentrate.Part D Listening and SpeakingAfter Monica left the office, she hurried down to the parking garage where her car was parked. As she searched in her purse for her car keys, she suddenly remembered that she had forgotten to lock the files where secret and important reports were kept. She knew that if her boss Mr. Henry found out that she had not locked the files, she could be fired. She turned and hurried back inside, waited impatiently forthe lift, and was glad that the trip to the seventh floor went without delay. As she hurried down the now dimly lit hall toward the offices of The Henry Company, she noticed that there was a light in Mr. Henry's office."Strange," she thought to herself, "I'm sure I turned all the lights out."Then she saw it. A man's shadow fell briefly across the glass of the door of the office and the lights went out."Oh, no. " She murmured to herself, her heart rising in her throat. "It must be a thief. What shall I do?"。

⼤学英语四级模拟测试(三)(附答案)听⼒(略)Part II Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D), and you should decide which is the best choice. (40 points) Passage 1Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:Just like children, deer often cross British roads to get to the other side. But the cost is the deer's life. At night, speeding cars hit and kill the animals. Now foresters are using natural animal instincts(本能)to prevent dangerous crossings. In England, the British Forestry Commission has installed thousands of glowing red "wolf eyes" along woodland roads. The eyes are actually reflectors, plastic bars like the red reflectors on your bike. The ten-centimeter long bars are fixed on top of posts, with only these signs directed towards the woods rather than the roads. When cars speed by, light rays from car headlights reflect off the reflectors' shining surface and flash into the woods. Deer are instantly scared by the wolf eyes ―even though wolves haven't hunted deer in Britain or even lived there for a hundred years!Scientists think the glowing light imitates the "eye shine" of nightly beasts. (You've probably seen eye shine on cats. Mirror-like cells in the eyes reflect some light that hits them.)The deer must not have "forgotten" that a wolf can run up to 72 km per hour in hot pursuit, or can sniff(嗅)deer out from 2.4 km away. In some areas where "wolf eyes" keep watch, 90 percent fewer deer have been killed at night.26. In Britain, deer's life is threatened _____ .A) by worsening environmentB) by nightly beastsC) by automobilesD) by illegal hunting27. The word "foresters" (Line 2, Para. 1) refers to _____.A) workers in charge of forestsB) traffic policemenC) raisers of wild animalsD) road-building engineers28. The nightly beasts' eyes _____.A) are as bright as mirrorsB) are as shiny as car headlightsC) can work as plastic barsD) can reflect incoming light29. The success of "wolf eyes" proves that _____.A) the deer is a kind of very timid animalB) animals can always be easily cheatedC) all things in nature are related to each otherD) the deer's fear of wolves is genetically built30. It is implied in the passage that _____.A) a wolf can run very fast in hot pursuitB) Great Britain pays great attention to animal protectionC) a wolf's smell is ten times more sensitive than man'sD) Britain has built many highways through woodlandsPassage 2Question 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:"Mind over matter" is an English saying meaning that we can control our bodies with our minds. Now scientists are finding increasing evidence that our mind can have a great effect on our physical health. Since our mind influences how we feel, it's not impossible to say that someone is ill just because he feels ill.The influence of the mind on how well we feel is the basis of what is known as the placebo (which is Latin for "I shall please") effect. A placebo is a harmless, inactive substance. Patients are sometimes given placebo pills and begin to feel better because they believe that they have been given real drugs and expect to respond to them. The placebo effect is very strong: research on pain suggests that up to 30% of the effect of most painkillers is a placebo effect. So if it's so powerful, why don't doctors use it today?According to Dr. Persaud, they do. "Things like wearing a white coat, going to a hospital, being scanned(扫描)all have a very strong placebo effect," he says.31. The English saying "mind over matter" means that _____.A) sound mind is more important than good healthB) our mind has strong effect on our bodyC) our physical health has nothing to do with our mindD) mental health mainly depends on physical health32. According to the first paragraph, if you feel ill, _____.A) you don't need to see a doctorB) you are still in good conditionC) it doesn't necessarily mean that you're physically ill33. According to the passage, placebos _____.A) are real effective pillsB) are not real drugsC) can relieve all kinds of painD) may make patients feel worse34. The placebo effect is based on _____.A) a response of the body to drugsB) a harmless, inactive substanceC) the constant use of some special drugsD) the influence of our minds on our bodies35. Which of the following may least have a placebo effect?A) Concentrating one's mind over a matter.B) Taking sleeping pills before going to bed.C) Taking a physical examination.D) Talking with a doctor.Passage 3Question 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:It is often thought that science fiction is a fairly new development in literature, but its ancestors(先驱)can be found in books written hundreds of years ago. These books were often concerned with the presentation of some form of ideal society, a theme which is still often found in modern stories. Most of the classics of science fiction, however, have been written within the last one hundred years. Books by writers such as Jules Verne and H. G. Wells, to mention just two well-known authors, have been translated into many languages.Modern science fiction writers don't often write about men from Mars or space adventure stories. They are more interested in predicting the effects of technical developments on society and the human mind; or in imagining future worlds which are a reflection of the world which we live in now. Because of this their writing has obvious political undertones. In an age where science fact frequently overtakes science fiction, the writers may find it difficult to keep ahead of scientific advances. Those who are sufficiently clear-sighted to see the way we are going, however, may provide a valuable lesson on how to deal with the problems which society will inevitably face as it tries to master its new technology and come to terms with a continually changing view of the world.36. Science fiction appeared _____.A) a few decades agoB) within the last one hundred yearsC) hundreds of years agoD) thousands of years ago37. Which of the following is less likely to be written in modern science fiction?A) Imagined space adventure and conquering new stars.B) Prediction of effects of technical developments on society.C) Prediction of effects of technical developments on human mind.D) Imagination of the future world in reflection of today's world.38. It can be concluded that modern science fiction writers _____.A) tend to show their political views in their worksB) follow the model set by Jules Verne and H.G. WellsC) are more creative than those in the pastD) are more interested in classic works39. The presentation of an ideal society is found _____.A) neither in classic and modern science fictionB) both in classic and modern science fictionC) only in classic science fictionD) as a fairly new trend in science fiction40. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A) Science fiction often overtakes science fact.B) Writers may find it easy to keep ahead of scientific advances.C) Science fiction is based on successful adventurous events.D) Science fiction helps us to face challenges of the future.Passage 4Question 41 to 45 are based on the following passage:My mother never let herself get down; no matter how bad things were, she stayed cheerful. Even though we had a hard life, she still maintained the attitude that everything was fine. I remember her coming home tired from her job at the restaurant and saying that we were lucky. We didn't have a lot of clothes or toys, but my mother always made sure we had enough to eat. Her love and devotion for my brother and me made our lack of material possessions seem insignificant. Even today, if I were given a choice between having love at home with no wealth and having wealth with no love, I would want it just the way I had it. I grew up poor in material things but rich in love.Since my father was never around long enough to teach me physical things or to play games with me, I didn't succeed in any competitive sport. My mother did her best as a substitute, throwing a ball with me in the lot behind our house, but it wasn't the same. She was too protective of me, and I didn't have enough confidence in my own abilities to really try anything physically demanding.41. We can see from the story that the author is _____ his mother.A) proud ofB) worried aboutC) pitiful forD) concerned about42. "My mother never let herself get down" means _____.A) she never got tiredB) she never felt sadC) she never fell illD) she was never impatient43. The story implies that the author's mother was least likely _____.A) to be pleased with her role in the familyB) to make friends wherever she wentC) to do things which were to be done by her husbandD) to cry over difficulties in life45. According to the author, a child won't be happy unless he _____.A) enjoys love at homeB) gets enough to eatC) lives with his parentsD) has a lot of clothes and toysPart III Vocabulary and StructureDirections: There are 20 incomplete sentences in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C), and D). You should decide on the best choice and write the corresponding letter on the space given.Passage OneQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage:Every time we open our mouths and speak we label ourselves -- I am English, you may be Bulgarian or African. We are all human beings, but sometimes we have communication problems which can lead to suspicion and misunderstanding. If you speak English, you have an advantage. The English language means power and freedom to many. It dominates international relations. It affects nearly all our lives in one way or another, influencing everything from pop music to diplomatic relations. Yet only around 10% of the world's population are native English speakers. Many of you reading now will have struggled to learn the grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation of this very complicated language. But there could be another solution: learning Esperanto.Esperanto, meaning "one who hopes", is an artificial language, said to be the easiest in the world to learn. It was invented in 1887 by Ludwig Zamnehof, a young Polish optician (眼镜商).The usefulness of Esperanto has been recognized the world over. It is now estimated that around eight million people in over 100 countries have at least some knowledge of it.In Esperanto, we have a language that is easy to learn and fair to all speakers because it belongs not to one nation but to us all. Many people who have tried to learn other languages and failed, have succeeded in Esperanto because it is so easy. Although it is often seen as a joke and not as an important living language, it has been considered dangerous and governments are sometimes afraid of it.Your view of the world is largely based on the language you speak. If you are French, you have a French view, if you are Chinese view and so on. Peter Miles, of the Esperanto Translation Service in England, says that speaking Esperanto gives you a truly international view of the world. He regards himself as a citizen of the world looking down from a satellite circling the earth, who is able to communicate with people all over the world in Esperanto.A nice thought!51. What is the best title for the passage?A) Esperanto -- An Artificial LanguageB) Esperanto -- A Language For AllC) Esperanto -- People's HopeD) Esperanto -- A Nice Thought52. The author speaks of Esperanto _____.A) in an objective wayB) in a subjective wayC) in an unfavorable wayD) in a favorable wayPassage TwoQuestions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage:Honeybees cannot live alone. Their body structure and instincts equip them for life in a colony of community, where they have a complex social organization and the various duties are divided among the individuals according to physical fitness andage. An individual worker bee cannot reproduce itself. While it may continue to live if forcibly isolated from its mates, it fails to care for itself adequately, and soon dies. Most insects have the ability to hibernate in winter, but the honeybee seems to have lost this. Since at low temperatures the bee will die, it must have the ability to make its own environment, so far as temperature is concerned. This makes a colony necessity to the bees in winter, so that they may collectively warm each other. Efficiency, if not necessity, demands that the work of colony be divided, and such a division of labor tends to enhance the need to maintain the colony. The physical structure of the honeybee is further suited for the defense of the entire colony rather than for its own defense. The bee's barbed sting is used only once and is made more effective by the fact that it is left behind in the victim. With the loss of the sting, however, the bee dies. This kind of defensive weapon is not of service to the individual, but to the community.56. Bee are fitted for communal life by virtue of their ______.A) flexibility and initiativeB) independence and enduranceC) intelligence and sensitivityD) instincts and form57. A worker bee may survive for a short time even if it is ______.A) deprived of its stingB) isolated from other beesC) denied access to oxygenD) exposed to a wide range of temperatures58. It can be inferred from the passage that at one time beeshad the ability to ______.A) increase their activity in lower temperaturesB) leave cold climates during winterC) remain dormant through periods of cold weatherD) construct insulated hives59. Bees differ from most other communities of insects in their need to _____.A) reproduce in large numbersB) divide the work of their coloniesC) control the temperature where they liveD) have a complex defense system60. Which of the following is the most appropriate title for the passage?A) The Communal Life of BeesB) The Organization of Insect ColoniesC) The Structure of the BeesD) The Life of Social InsectsPassage ThreeQuestions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:One of the most widely discussed subjects these days is the energy crisis. Automobile drivers cannot get gasoline, homeowners may not get enough heating oil, factories are threatened by a fuel shortage. The crisis has raised questions about the large oil companies and windfall (意外收获) profits. Critics of the oil industry charge that the major companies are getting richer because of the oil shortage. Shortage, of course, drives prices up. As oil prices rise, the critics say, the oil companies will make more and more money -- windfall profits -- without doing a thing to earn the extra cash. "Windfall" profits are sudden unearned profits -- profits made because of luck, or some special turn of events. The word itself tells what "windfall" means -- something blown down by the wing, such as trees, or fruit blown from trees. But the world has taken on a special meaning. This meaning -- getting something unearned -- was first used in medieval (中世纪的) England. This is how it started: At that time much of the land was in the hands of a few barons (贵族). The rest of the people, commoners, lived and worked on their vast estates (领地). They planted the seed, cared for the farm animals and harvested the crops. Not all the land, however, was used for farming. Every land baron kept a large private forest for hunting deer and wild boar (野猪).When hungry, the people sometimes would like kill the animals in the lord's forest for food. And there were times when they might cut down trees for fuel. So, strong laws were passed to protect the forest and the animals. Violations were severely punished. But there was one way people could get wood from the forest. If they found trees blown down by the wind -- "windfall" -- they were free to take them for use as fuel in their homes. And that is the meaning that has come down to us -- something gotten by luck or accident. The poor common people of old England must often have prayed for a good strong wind. Critics today complain that the oil industry has also been praying for something just like it -- some political or military storm that might produce a windfall --a rise in oil prices and profits. The oil companies deny that this is so. In congress, critics of the oil companied have proposed a tax on such profits. The debate on rising oil prices will go on for some time, and most likely we will hear more and more about windfall profits.61. "Critics of the companies" in the last paragraph means ______.A) persons from the oil companies who are criticizing othersB) persons criticizing the oil companiesC) critical opinions from the oil companiesD) critical opinions to the oil companies62. Which of the following couldn't the commoners do in the medieval English?A) Do farm workB) Raise animalsC) Live on baron's landD) Kill animals for food63. Which word(s) should be stressed?A) `windfall profitsB) windfall `profitsC) `windfall `profitsD) windfall profits64. The author's attitude towards the "windfall profits" made by the major oil companies seems to be ______.A) sympatheticB) objectiveC) indistinctD) critical65. Which do you think would be the best title for the article?A) Windfall ProfitsB) Energy CrisisC) WindfallD) The Origin of WindfallPassage FourQuestions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage:Dear Jack,Thank you for your congratulations, my congratulations to you! I remember Margaret Field very well -- the girl with that wonderful red hair and those beautiful green eyes. She was the most popular girl in the college. You're a very lucky fellow and I'm sure you'll be very happy with her.Brenda and I are very lucky, too. Her father gave us this house as a wedding present, so we haven't to pay rent. The house and furniture are insured already, so I can't help you by giving you that kind of business. I wish I'd known earlier that you were in the insurance business. I'd certainly have asked you to give me a policy for the house and its contents.I'm rather doubtful about the value of life insurance. It's my duty, I know, to see that there will be money for my wife, and later on for the children, in the event of my early death. But I feel that it's wiser to put any money I can save into the shares of good business companies. You say I can get a policy that will provide '50,000 when I'm 65. Yes, but that time is nearly forty years away, and what will '50,000 be worth then? Ever since the First World War the real value of money has been going down. Prices go upa little every year, perhaps only 4% or 5%, but the movement is always up, never down. '50.000 in fifty years from now may be worth only two-thirds or even a half of what it is worth today. Now if I put my savings into the shares of the big oil companies, or aircraft manufacturers, the value of the shares will go up with the rise in costs and prices. So the real value of my money would remain about the same, wouldn't it? I know your answer. You'll say that your life insurance policy provides against my possible death. I've got to balance that possibility against the almost certain fall in the value of money.I'd very much like you to meet Brenda. Can you come for a weekend some time? What about a fortnight next Saturday? If you can manage it, please let me know which train you're coming by, and I'll meet you at the station. We can have a talk about life insurance and perhaps you'll succeed in making me see that life insurance is a good thing.Yours sincerely,Fred66. We can infer from the passage that _____.A) Margaret, Jack and Fred once studied in the same collegeB) Margaret was unfamiliar to FredC) Margaret was Fred's wifeD) Margaret and Brenda were friends67. The word "policy" in paragraph 2 means _____.A) statement of aims and ideas made by a government.B) sensible conductC) written statement of the terms of a contract of insuranceD) art of government68. "In the event of my early death" can be replaced by _____.A) when I should die youngB) if I should die youngC) after I should die youngD) before I should die young69. Which of the following can be used to modify Fred?A) Practical.B) Short-sighted.C) Skeptical.D) Narrow-minded.70. Both thepassage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the bestanswer from the four choices marked A), B), C), and D).Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2with a single line through the center.Passage OneReligious and private schools receive little or no support from public taxes in the United States. As a result, they are more expensive to attend. The religious schools in America are usually run by churches. Therefore they tend to be less expensive than privateschools. When there is free education available to all children in the United States, why do people spend money on private schools? Americans offer a great variety of reasons for doing so. Some parents send their children to private schools because the classes there are usually smaller. In their opinion the public schools in their area are not of high quality to meet their needs. Private schools in the United States range widely in size and quality, and they offer all kinds of programs to meet the needs of certain students.Questions 16 to 18 are based on the passage you have just heard.16. Why is it usually expensive to attend religious and private schools?17. Who usually runs religious schools in the United States?18. What is one of the reasons for people to send their children to private schools?Passage TwoNow research from Australia shows that pets are good for your health. The findings of this new study suggest that people who have pets are at less risk from heart disease than those who do not.The new research was carried out over three years and examined 6,000 people. They took tests that measured a variety of different factors known to be involved in heart disease —blood pressure and blood levels. Also, people were asked about their lifestyles. The 800 people who owned pets had low levels on each of the factors measured than those who did not own pets. The study also showed that it did not matter what kind of pet was owned—a cat was as good as a dog—so the benefits could not be attributed to the exercises involved in walking a dog.The question is just how pets manage to make their owners more healthier. The obvious answer is that they make their owners feel more relaxed and happy. The Australian scientists who organized this study commented that if a new drug was available that was as effective as simply having a pet, then this drug would undoubtedly be considered a breakthrough in the control of heart disease.Questions 19 to 21 are based on the passage you have just heard.19. You don’t have to be an engineering student to compete—all interested students at CentralState are invited to enter. Preliminary events take place on Saturday in the Commons south of the EngineeringTower.
