She glanced at him.升级:She shot her a meaningful look.

Pointing to a colorful flower,Tricia Campbell lifts her baby’s soft hand, and rapidly moves it from one side of his nose to the other as she sniffs(嗅).“Flower!” she says loudly.Gregory smiles and looks carefully. It could be a year before Gregory,4 months old,can speak, but now his mother hopes to communicate with her baby through sign language.Like others around the world,Campbell is part of a growing movement of parents teaching hearing babies simple signs to communicate before they can talk. The baby sign language has been more popular in recent years. The movie,Meet the Fockers, where Robert De Niro’s character teaches his younggrandson to sign, makes it well developed.Babies generally begin to talk between 12 and 15 months, but babies can use sign language to communicate before they learn how to speak.“We know they are learning language faster than they are able to show you with their speech production because that system takes a long time to develop,” says Gerald McRoberts, director of developmental research at the Haskins Laboratories,a private, nonprofit research insti tute on speech and language.“They are understanding words before they are able to say them. From around 16 to 18 months, they might say 50 words but understand 200.They understand short sentences well,” says McRoberts.Studies have shown deaf children learn to use sign language earlier than hearing children learn to speak meaningfully. As to whether hearing babies can communicate earlier with sign language,McRoberts says,“I think that’s still unknown. It may not.I’m very interested in that very question.”1.The first paragraph is written to .A.show how Tricia Campbell taught her son “flower”B.show Gregory can use baby sign languageC.introduce the topic—baby sign languageD.explain that baby sign language is easy to learn2.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 probably refers to . A.how to teach a grandsonB.making baby sign language meaningfulC.the movement of teaching babies sign languageD.the movie,Meet the Fockers3.Many parents teach their babies sign language mainly to .A.make their babies cleverB.make their babies learn English fasterC.communicate with their babiesD.make their babies interested in language4.Which of the following does McRoberts agree with?A.The speech production system of babies develops very quickly.B.Babies can understand more words than they can say.C.Hearing babies can communicate earlier with sign language.D.Deaf children understand short sentences very well.B(2017·广西桂林十八中月考)There’s a whole lot of things that people fi ll their stomachs with. Some of them keep people alive. Some of them taste good to people. Some of them help people win pieeating contests.Alcohol does none of those things. Why do people keep drinking it?And what does it do once it gets to their stomachs? There are all kinds of alcohol molecules(分子),but the one that people most often pour down their throat is ethanol(乙醇).Ethanol is very tiny and it dissolves in water,so it gets into all sorts of places that it’s not supposed to.Alcohol heads for the digestive system.Because it dissolves in water,it can get into the water in the bloodstream.Because ethanol,to a certain extent, can pass through cell membranes(膜).It can go almost anywhere. It spreads through the muscles, and is sweated—unmetabolized(未经新陈代新的) and whole—through the skin.It gets into the heart. It even takes a walk through the brain, and this is the secret of its powers.Alcohol depresses the nerves, and the nerves affect almost every area of the body.Enough alcohol makes people sleep,so people who become unconscious choke on their own vomit(呕吐物).Most worryingly, enough alcohol can shutdown those parts of the brain just like any other parts.People become unconscious and their brains simply forget to breathe.Alcohol is broken down in the liver.Alcohol doesn’t destroy the liver, but products that the liver breaks the alcohol into do cause damage.A glass of wine per day can not do any harm.Instead,it can prevent heart attacks or can make someone functionally young. And it is kind of nice to know that sometimes, relaxation and cheer can be bottled. All that’s needed is to take care how much alcohol is let into a person’s brain.5.How does the author introduce the topic of the text?A.By statement. B.By question.C.By arguing. D.By explaining.6.Why can alcohol reach the brain?A.Because it can move through water molecules in the blood.B.Because it is small enough to get through any narrow space.C.Because it is so light that the bloodstream can transport it.D.Because it is absorbed only by the cells in the stomach.7.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?A.Alcohol affects the work of the nerves.B.Alcohol has an effect on people’s breath.C.People are drunk when their brains get drunk.D.Drinking too much is quite dangerous.8.From the passage,we can know .A.many people like a drink when they feel relaxedB.enough alcohol can control the brain activitiesC.alcohol can damage the liver indirectlyD.proper alcohol may lead to better sleepⅡ.七选五(2017·河南洛阳一中月考)Every student has tests when they are at school. But have you ever been so worried about the tests that you can’t fall asleep at night?Have you ever felt sick or had a headache during a test?9 This worry in your mind can make your body feel bad.You may feel angry, frustrated, scared,or afraid, which can give you a stomachache or a headache.10 Good or normal stress might happen when you are called to answer a question in class or when you have to give a speech. This kind of stress can help you to get things better done. 11But bad stress can happen if the stressful feelings keep going over a long time. You may not feel well if your parents are fighting,if a family member is ill,if you are having problems at school,or if you are going through anything else that makes you upset every day. 1213 That means making good decision about how to spend your time.If you are only dealing with school stuff and have no time to play, you can get stressed.Make sure you keep your SELF in mind:Sleep,Exercise,Leisure and Food.If you take care of yourself and get enough sleep and food, and if you exercise and leave time for fun stuff, you will probably be less stressed out!A.However, there are two different kinds of stress.B.Can you tell a kind of stress from another one?C.The best way to keep stress away is to have a balanced life.D.That kind of stress isn’t going to help you,and it can actually make you sick. E.Since bad stress is harmful to us,you’d better try to change it into good stress.F.If so,then you know what stress is.Stress is what you feel when you are worried or uncomfortable about something.G.For example, you may do a better job on your test if the stress pushes you to prepare well before the test. 1.trembling 2.caught 3.to breathe 4.seized 5.fingers 6.in 7.to 8.on 9.away 10.out阅读能力专练Ⅰ.

A.The introduction of forks.B.The tax deduction policy.C.The rise of the Renaissance.D.Petrus Alfonsi’s efforts in promoting table manners.4.What can we conclude from the article?A.British and American table manners are completely different from each other.B.American people pay more attention to their table manners than British people do.C.With globalization, the American cutandswitch method has been abandoned in the US. D.British people’s way of using a knife and fork may be more efficient than American people’s.BAs a substitute teacher,my daily routine involves driving to a new school almost every day so I’m usually unable to anticipate(预料) the day’s events, good or bad!On one particular day,I was teaching in a very difficult classroom.I was managing behavior all the morning and by lunchtime,I knew I needed coffee to even consider surviving the afternoon. So on my lunch break,I drove to a nearby plaza to get a cup of coffee.Upon returning to the car I realized I had locked my keys and my phone inside!I had about 15 minutes to get back to the school. It was a good 4 or 5minute drive.I contemplated(思考) rushing back, but it being winter,I thought a nasty fall on ice would only make the situation much worse. So I ran into a McDonald’s which was in the same plaza and asked the man at the counter, who happened to be the manager,to call me a cab.I briefly explained my situation to him,and I could tell that he empathized with me from his expression. He hurried to the back to use the phone while I was waiting.I had less than 10 minutes to get back to my school at this point. The manager returned only to tell me that the cab company had put him on hold and then the line got disconnected. My expression,I assume, began to resemble some combination of hopelessness and fear.Without a second thought,he grabbed his coat and offered to drive me to the school.Without hesitation,I followed him into his car and made it back into my classroom with 2 minutes to spare before the bell!Upon arriving at the school,I thanked this man endlessly. His calm behavior and kind nature made me think he was probably a wonderful manager to work for. This experience makes me realize that out of every seemingly hopeless situation, there is the opportunity for acts of kindness to transpire(发生),which can have an unimaginable impact(影响) on those who receive them.5.Why did the author want to get a cup of coffee?A.Because he was very thirsty at that time.B.Because he was only interested in drinking coffee.C.Because he had to refresh himself for the classes in the afternoon.D.Because he wanted to do something special to pass the whole afternoon.6.The author ________ so he gave up the idea of going back to school on foot when he found his keys and phone were locked inside the car.A.was too tired to walk furtherB.was afraid of falling down on iceC.asked the manager to call him a cabD.decided to take a school bus7.The author has probably stayed in the McDonald’s for about ________.A.15 minutes B.8-9 minutesC.4-5 minutes D.2 minutes8.What kind of person is the manager?A.Kindhearted. 高考提能练(四十)Module 4 Music Born in AmericaⅠ.阅读理解A[2019·湖南长郡中学检测]On Wednesday, nearly 300 kids will take part in the National Spelling Bee. Fewer will make it to the following day's semifinals, where one mistake means elimination (淘汰). I'd bet that many of them will be silently praying — not on the first word. I knew it because I was there 17 years ago.I was a 14yearold girl then. My mother and I had flown from Kentucky to Washington, but the capital was no strange to her. My older sister had already competed at the national level. When my sister was 14 and I was 12, we trained together. We began with the Suggested List given out at school — hundreds of words printed on a poster that could be folded up like a map. When the words along the creases (褶痕) began to disappear, we bought additional spelling lists.Sometimes my mother tested us, reading words most English teachers wouldn't know how to pronounce, let alone my Indianborn mother. When she pointed out the misspelled words, I blamed her accent for my errors! When it was my turn, I approached the microphone and waited for my first word. The announcer was somewhere to my left, a man who pronounced clearly. “Barbican,” he said.It seemed that my competitors were secretly complaining about the relative ease of my word. Would they laugh at me if I couldn't spell it? Would my mother be disappointed in me? That last syllable could go two ways: CAN or CON. Which one was right? Finally I decided on CON.Of course, I was eliminated and guided to the Comfort Room, where parents couldn't enter. Inside, recent losers were sitting around a table abundant with junk food.We casually mentioned the words that defeated us, like a special ceremony to welcome each new arrival. Then we changed the subject if we'd already moved on from missed words and lost opportunities.Eventually, I went out and saw my mother.“Well,” she said, “I_guess_you_won't_be_doing_this_again.” Yes, next year I would be 15 and not allowed to take part in the competition.

The movie,Meet the Fockers, where Robert De Niro’s character teaches hi s young grandson to sign, makes it well developed.Babies generally begin to talk between 12 and 15 months, but babies can use sign language to communicate before they learn how to speak.“We know they are learning language faster than they are able to show you with their speech production because that system takes a long time to develop,” says Gerald McRoberts, director of developmental research at the Haskins Laboratories,a private, nonprofit research institute on speech and language.“They are understanding words before they are able to say them. A.how to teach a grandsonB.making baby sign language meaningfulC.the movement of teaching babies sign languageD.the movie,Meet the Fockers3.Many parents teach their babies sign language mainly to .A.make their babies cleverB.make their babies learn English fasterC.communicate with their babiesD.make their babies interested in language4.Which of the following does McRoberts agree with?A.The speech production system of babies develops very quickly.B.Babies can understand more words than they can say.C.Hearing babies can communicate earlier with sign language.D.Deaf children understand short sentences very well.B(2017·广西桂林十八中月考)There’s a whole lot of things that people fill their stomachs with. It even takes a walk through the brain, and this is the secret of its powers.Alcohol depresses the nerves, and the nerves affect almost every area of the body.Enough alcohol makes people sleep,so people who become unconscious choke on their own vomit(呕吐物).Most worryingly, enough alcohol can shut down those parts of the brain just like any other parts.People become unconscious and their brains simply forget to breathe.Alcohol is broken down in the liver.Alcohol doesn’t destroy the liver, but products that the liver breaks the alcohol into do cause damage.A glass of wine per day can not do any harm.Instead,it can prevent heart attacks or can make someone functionally young. E.Since bad stress is harmful to us,you’d better try to change it into good stress. F.If so,then you know what stress is.Stress is what you feel when you are worried or uncomfortable about something.G.For example, you may do a better job on your test if the stress pushes you to prepare well before the test. 1.trembling 2.caught 3.to breathe 4.seized 5.fingers 6.in 7.to 8.on 9.away 10.out阅读能力专练Ⅰ.
