Listening text
(Text 1)
W: Excuse me, Mr. Smith.
M: What’s the matter? I don’t want to be disturbed while I’m talking to Mr. Black. W: But you have a meeting scheduled with the engineer.
M: Call him, please, and put off our meeting.
(Text 2)
W: I’m hungry. Do you have any cookie s? I ate my last one this morning.
M: No. But there are some nuts in the living room.
(Text 3)
M: So many magazines on my desk. Who did this?
W: Maybe it was Justin. He said you were going to refer to them to finish your design.
M: Oh, that’s right. I did ask him to bring the latest magazines to me. I completely forgot. (Text 4)
W: When on earth did you get home last night? 11:30 or 12 o’clock?
M: Not really, my watch told me it was only 11:20 when I opened the door.
(Text 5)
M: What have you got there?
W: It’s my sun lamp. I’m taking it down to the electrical repair shop to be fixed. There’s something wrong with the wiring.
(Text 6)
M: How did you do on the exam, Nancy?
W: I passed, but I didn’t do so well. The essay question was the worst part for me. How about you?
M: I did all right on everything except for the essay question, too. ⑦I wasn’t really prepared to write about Arthur Miller’s plays. We study his plays for only a few days. I didn’t think it would be on the test.
W: Me, either. I thought Mr. Green would ask us something about Mark Twain’s novels or maybe Walt Whitman’s poems. I studied most of the material on these two writers and didn’t spend much time on Arthur Miller’s plays.
(Text 7)
W: ⑧I’m calling to confirm my flight to New York this Saturday. My name is Jane Austin, and my flight number is K701.
M: Yes, Ms Austin. Your name is here in our computer. Your plane takes off at 9:00 am. And I’d like to remind you to please come to the airport two hours before your take-off time to get your seating arrangements.
W: Thank you. By the way, could you tell me once again how long my flight will be?
M: ⑨The total number of hours is 16 hours because you have a two-hour stopover at Los Angeles Airport.
(Text 8)
W: Could you check my tires, sir? I think they need air.
M: No problem, madam. Well, they are just all right. Should I check the air in the spare tire as well?
W: I don’t think so. It’s brand new.
M: Should I clean the windshield(挡风玻璃) for you?
W: Yes, please. I also want you to check the radiator(散热器).
M: All right, madam. (11)Gosh, there is hardly any water in the radiator. That’s dangerous, madam. You could break down because of the heat, you know.
W: Please fill it up with water then.
M: OK, madam.
W: (12) Do you take credit cards or checks?
M: (12) Sorry, we don’t. It’s ten dollars in total.
W: OK. Here you are.
M: Thank you. Have a nice drive.
(Text 9)
M: So you studied art at college?
W: Right. (13)But I gave up my job as a painter when my daughter was born. I thought about teaching art classes part-time, but instead I started making dolls for my daughter. I love acting, so I often invented plays for the dolls. I once used the dolls to give a show at my daughter’s party. The children loved it. As a result, other parents asked me to do the show at their children’s parties.
M: It must be a lot of work for you.
W: Yes. I love making the dolls, but I decided that I needed someone to help me with the shows.
Luckily my neighbor Lena was willing to perform with me. Her husband recorded the music to go with the shows. It would be impossible to do everything on my own.
M: Have you ever had any problems?
W: Only once. (14)I wrote a story about a lion. The children were afraid of the lion and cried.
I was worried the parents might complain, but in fact they laughed about it. After that, (15)
whenever I’ve invented a new story, I show it to my daughter. She always tells me exactly what she thinks of it.
M: And the shows continue to be successful?
W: Yes, I have a wide range of different shows. They become so successful that I could do one every day, but I don’t want to do that. (16)The reason the shows have become popular is that I love every minute of every show, and so other people love them too.
(Text 10)
M: Do you want to spend a holiday in space? Dennis Tito has become the world’s first “space tourist”. (17)He went on a 10-day visit to the International Space Station. He paid 14 million pounds for his journey. A year later, Martin wanted to do the same. He was only 22 years old and probably very rich too. He is still waiting for his holiday of a lifetime.
Many people believe that this is only the start of something new. We made interviews among teenagers from around the world and the following is what they said about space travel. “It’s a great idea. I hope space travel will be common in about 50 years’ time. I’d really love to do it,” (18) Kate from Australia said.
(19) “I would like to see our beautiful earth from space. There are lots of secrets to explore in space and I would go into space if I could,” Ben from China said.
“I think space travel is really bad for the environment. We should look after our own planet first,” Richard from Canada said.
“It must be very boring and dangerous to sit in that small space shuttle. I’d rather take a plane a nd go to another place on earth,” Lisa from the UK said.
So, as you can see, many of our teenagers had different opinions. Whether you like it or not, space travel is going to become an important thing in the future. (20)We are looking forward to hearing your opinions.。
