Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared? Actually, the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many people argue that it is built into every part of our society.

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning this fact. Yet there are many people who do not seem to know that the memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough opportunity to become strong. The position is exactly the same as that of two persons, one of whom exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motorcar all day.

The situation is made worse since many of the earth’s forests are being removed, and plant life is being damaged by acid rain.
Although it is difficult to explain, I think the last cause is very important. Perhaps there is something with our society which encourages violence and crime. It is a fact that all the time children are exposed to films and reports about crime and violence. Many people do not agree that this influences the young people, but I think that young people are very much influenced by the society they grow in. I feel that the fault may be as much with our whole society as with these young people.

▆■■■■■■■■■■■■《大学英语(2)》期末考试A卷姓名:学号:专业:学习中心:一、阅读:20% (所有答案必须填在答卷表格里,否则不得分)( 1 )In the United States many have been told that anyone can become rich and successful if he works hard and has some good luck.Yet, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tries to look as rich and as successful as his neighbors. The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American by the name of Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself: he began earning $125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. Young Momand was very proud of his riches. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. But just moving there was not enough. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horse riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors. It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. Momand and his wife could not do that. The race ended for them when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They left their wealthy neighborhood and moved back to an apartment in New York City.Momand looked around him and noticed that many people dothings just to keep up with their neighbors. He saw the funny side ofit and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “keepingup with the Joneses”, because “Jones” is a very common name in theUnited States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keepingup with the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in differentnewspapers across the country for over 28 years.Every city has an area where people want to live because otherswill think better of them if they do. And there are “Joneses” in everycity of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with theJoneses, because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems tobe ahead.1. It can be inferred from the story that rich people _____.A. like to live in apartmentsB. like to live in New York CityC. like to live outside New York CityD. like to have many neighbors4. Arthur Momand used the name “Jones” in his series of short storiesbecause Jones is _____.A,. an important nameB. his neighbor’s nameC. a popular name in the United StatesD. not a good name5. According to the writer, it is _____.A. correct to keep up with the JonesesB. interesting to keep up with the JonesesC. impossible to keep up with the JonesesD. good to keep up with the Joneses( 2 )A certain hunter had found a piece of forest where there wereplenty of animals to hunt. A. the poorer one is, the better his memory
B. memory can be improved by practicing it
C. the poor and humble people may help you remember things
D. if you want a good memory, do not read or write anything
Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories than those who can? Why is this? Of course, because those who cannot read or write have to remember things; they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember dates, times and prices, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised.
D. Learn from the Poor and Humble.

You have no social life other than work-related events.
In our society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did, to find better jobs, to make more money and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, that is another cause of the gap between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.
The gas shortage has caused a big problem for Americans. But the answer will not be a bigger system of public transportation. The real solution will have to be a new kind of car, one that does not use so muchgas.
The third reason is the most important one, though. The American spirit of independence is what really made cars popular. Americans don’t like to wait for a bus or a train or even a plane. They don’t like to have to follow an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time. And this is the freedom that Americans want most to have.

In theUnited Statesmany have been told that anyone can become rich and successful if he works hard and has some good luck.
Yet, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tries to look as rich and as successful as his neighbors.

Do some brainstorming about your expenses and how you could possibly cut back on them.
It is wise to write them down on paper because it is less easy to dismiss them that way.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “keeping up with the Joneses”, because “Jones” is a very common name in theUnited States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American by the name of Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself: he began earning $125 aweek at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. Young Momand was very proud of his riches. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outsideNew York City. But just moving there was not enough. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horse riding every day. When he saw that rich people hadservants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors.
Every city has an area where people want to live because others will think better of them if they do. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But onemust get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses, because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.
For example, can you cut down on the amount of gas you use by taking public transportation?
If you eat out often, consider making more meals at home.
Examine your buying habits.
It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. Momand and his wife could not do that.
The race ended for them when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They left their wealthy neighborhood and moved back to an apartment inNew York City.
