I thought, “I can do that for Montreal.” With little hesitation, I devoted the next five years of my life to the project.I never walked through any shabby (破旧的) neighborhoods. From one end of my map to the other, all houses were well looked after. People went to great lengths to decorate their homes, and with this came one of the great pleasures of my walks: the different measures they took to decorate their frontage (正面). I discovered that pigs are a popular decorative element throughout the city. The type that is dressed up as humans, I mean. I saw pigs wearing dresses, shirts, and even swimming costumes.Every outing has its wonders. Never assume a neighborhood has little of interest to offer. You must be trained to seek out strange things. Otherwise, you might never spot the clothes on the sidewalks. If I stopped to collect everything I saw lying around abandoned, I could fit out a small country. Where did they come from? How did people lose their shoes while walking out ? A puzzle. As my project progressed, I felt like I owned the city. I could get off at any subway station and my feet remembered the route to the best shops. There was enough fun in my walks that I’d have a few laughs and feel more light-hearted than when I left.Anyone can get in on this walking game. I admit with some shame. I used to huddle (蜷缩) in my part of town, feeling isolated, but walking its streets has truly opened my eyes to Montreal’s full menu. Now I’m quite satisfied with what I obtain. So just head to a neighborhood to nose around. I can assure you that you’ll feel like a pioneer with the discoveries you bring back. 4.Why did the author decide to walk the streets of Montreal?A.She wanted to collect strange things.B.She wanted to do some research.C.She had to conduct a project.D.She drew inspiration from an article.5.What do we know about the neighborhoods in Montreal?A.The shabby houses are abandoned.B.People enjoy dressing up as pigs.C.People enjoy decorating their houses.D.All the houses are equal in length.6.What amazed the author during her trips?A.The houses in good condition.B.The clothes left on sidewalks.C.The routes of subway stations.D.The animals walking on the streets.7.How did the author feel on her walk?A.Cheerful and content.B.Excited and energetic.C.Relieved and grateful.D.Puzzled and upset.Jackdaws (寒鸦) are the smallest member of the crow family. They often live in a crowd. Indeed, when cold weather comes, they gather in the hundreds (and sometimes thousands) every evening so that they can sleep in the same place. If you’ve ever heard jackdaws during their evening gatherings and morning departures, you’ll know they are not quiet birds. Despite being fairly low-volume during the day, they are really loud on either side of their night-time get-togethers. Why might this be?A team of the Cornish Jackdaw Project set out to determine why jackdaws are so noisy before they depart from their sleeping spot. The team’s theory was that the morning calls might be a jackdaw version of“voting”. The researchers suspected that each individual’s call might count as an “I’m in!”. When a certain amount of “I’m in!”s are called —and so a certain volume of noise is reached -the group might then depart as a unit.To test this idea, the researchers artificially increased the level of calls during the jackdaws’natural morning calls. Their expectation was that, if jackdaws really are “voting with their voice” to decide when to depart the sleeping site, artificially adding calls would make them leave earlier than they naturally would have done. Subsequent experiments confirmed their expectation. The team therefore showed that jackdaws use their calls as a sort of voting system. You might wonder why this happens. The researchers suggest that individual jackdaws benefit from the voting system because they are less at risk of being killed and they can get more access to social information — such as where to find food.So the loud calls of jackdaws in the morning are therefore not the pure chaos it sounds like. If you are ever being driven mad by the sound in the morning, you can find comfort in the fact that the louder they get, the sooner they will leave you in peace.8.What aspect of jackdaws confused scientists?A.Their strong team spirit.B.Their preference for noisy habitats.C.Their collective sleeping habit.D.Their unusual calling behavior.9.What happened to the jackdaws when artificial calls were added?A.They stopped calling together.B.They left their sleeping spot earlier.C.They became noisier and more active.D.They changed their sleeping location. 10.What does the voting system mean to individual jackdaws?A.A signal of seeking food.B.A strategy for better survival.C.A way to attract potential partners.D.A method of displaying social skills. 11.What can be the best title for the text?A.Jackdaws are Noise Makers.B.Jackdaws Have a Complex V oting System.C.Jackdaws ‘Vote’ to Make a Group Decision.D.Jackdaws ‘V ote’ to Choose Their Group Leaders. It was extremely generous of the people of France to give the American people the Statue of Liberty, especially as the money was raised by donations from the public who recognized what the countries had in common. After all, both nations had fought revolutions to secure their nationhood.Nowadays, it seems as though the gift has been returned with interest with the foundation ofEuro Disney near Paris. Nevertheless, many French people feel it symbolizes a kind of “cultural colonialism (殖民主义)”. To tell the truth, I would not welcome the presence of such a theme park in the middle of England, for the same reason. Mind you, neither England nor France have ever been afraid to export their own culture and values.Anyway, it is not difficult to understand why they chose to build Euro Disney near Paris. It is a geographically logical site, in the center of continental Europe, right by the capital city with its own attractions and so on. All the same, was it a culturally logical decision? There is the issue of “cultural colonialism” which I have already mentioned. What’s more, do the French need Mickey Mouse when they have their own cartoon hero in the form of the brave little Gaul, Asterix? Euro Disney’s rival the Parc Asterix has proved a popular destination for families wanting a day out. By the way, Parc Asterix is an easy drive from Paris too. Millions of dollars have been poured into Euro Disney to provide a top-class attraction but the thing is, can visitors expect an authentic American welcome? The answer must surely be “no”! There again, Euro Disney is a cheaper option for most Europeans than going all the way to the States. All in all I would rather create theme parks which celebrated my own heroes than accept those from elsewhere. In a word, this is because it is not always possible to transport culture — like some wines they do not travel well. In the future I will take my family to Florida to Disney World and the Magic Kingdom. However, until that day arrives we won’t be going to Euro Disney. There is a time and place for everything.12.What is many French people’s attitude toward Euro Disney?A.They are unhappy with it.B.They show no interest in it.C.They warmly welcome it.D.They think it a reward for the Statue ofLiberty.13.Why did the Americans choose to build Euro Disney near Paris?A.It was a culturally logical decision.B.It symbolized the two countries’ friendship.C.There were no theme parks near Paris.D.The location had a geographical advantage. 14.What does the underlined word “rival” in paragraph 3 mean?A.Partner.B.Competitor.C.Neighbor.D.Customer. 15.Which of the following is the author’s opinion?A.Euro Disney can’t provide real American service.B.Parc Asterix is more expensive than Euro Disney.C.Theme parks should accept popular heroes.D.American culture isn’t popular around the world.Sometimes, it’s good to be bored“I am dying of boredom,” complains the young wife Yelena in Chekhov’s 1897 play Uncle Vanya. Of course, if Yelena were around today, we know what she would do: pull out her smartphone and find something fun. Today it is easy to get rid of boredom. 16 That is the finding of two fascinating recent studies. In one, researchers asked subjects to do something boring, like copying out numbers from a phone book, and then take tests of creative thinkings. The result? 17 In the second study, subjects gave more answers to a word test than a non-bored control group after being forced to watch a dull screensaver.“An restless mind hungers for stimulation, so boredom becomes a seeking state,” says Sandi Mann, the psychologist at the University of Central Lancashire. “ 18 ” Parents will tell you that kids with “nothing to do” will eventually invent some fun games to play — with a cardboard box, a light switch, whatever. The problem, the researchers worry, is that these days we don’t struggle to overcome these slow moments. “ 19 ” Mann says. “This might relieve us temporarily, but it shuts down the deeper thinking.” So here is an idea: Instead of always avoiding boredom, embrace and face it. Sometimes, anyway. Mann has found she gets some of her best thinking done when she is driving her car and therefore can’t be distracted by her phone.20 The good type inspires you to see what can come of it. The bad type, in contrast, tires you and makes you feel like you can’t be bothered to do anything. An important part of our modern task, then, is learning to evaluate these different types of boredom — to distinguish the useful kind from the harmful one.A.And there is, of course, bad boredom.B.Bored subjects came up with more creative ideas.C.But what if boredom is a meaningful experience?D.These moments are a lot more valuable than expected.E.Actually, tips on getting away from boredom are countless.F.We try to kill every moment of boredom with mobile devices.G.When not satisfied with your state, you’re seeking and engaged.二、完形填空On a June morning, Nicolo 21 working the whole night at a factory in Turin. Of course, you can also visit other attractions in the areaslike museums, restaurants, parks, beaches and so on.Others take the term “staycation” word for word and do not leave their houses at all. Some choices for this can include taking time off to cook a great meal and enjoy it together, or spending all day at a pool.Just as a coin has two sides, stay cation has both its advantages and risks. Since you are not travelling or staying in a hotel, a stay cation can be unbelievably cheap. You are also saving by not driving very far and by not taking an airplane anywhere. Travel costs have become really expensive, so the farther you go, the more expensive it is. By staying close to home, you cut that cost by quite a bit. Finally, any stress that you feel with travel, whether that is from driving long distance or looking for an airport, will completely disappear.8.What is the purpose of the text?A.To introduce the general information on staycations.B.To compare staycations with other vacations. C.To provide different ways of staycations.D.To advise people to have staycations.9.When taking staycations, people ______.A.usually travel to cities far away B.spend all day eating and sleepingC.visit famous attractions of different cities D.either relax at home or travel near their homes 10.What will probably be discussed in the following paragraph?A.How to have a stay cation safely.B.Why people prefer a staycation.C.What risks a staycation has.D.When to take a staycation.DWang Xiaojun is twelve years old. Even after she won the 2021 NobelPrize in Literature, the Canadian writer just appeared for a quick interview and then dropped out of sight. On Dec 29, she still didn't seek the spotlight〔聚光灯〕when shewas named one of the five Women of the Year by the Financial Times. In Munro's eyes, ordinary lives always hide larger dramas. So she records what we casually think of as the everyday actions of normal people. She often focuses on life in her hometown, a small village in Ontario which she is most familiar with. Shewrites about the ordinary things in the village-fox forming, trees filled in the Ontario wilderness, poor country alcohol and long last illnesses. Above all, she talks about girls and women who have seemingly ordinary lives but struggle against daily misfortune. She has a special talent for uncovering the extraordinary in the ordinary. These are ordinary people, ordinary stories, but she has the magic. Her precise language, depth of detail and the logicof her storytelling have made her stories inviting.Runaway, one of Munro’s representative works, is a good example of her writing style. One of the stories centers on the life of an ordinary woman Carla, who lives in asmall Canadian town with her husband Clark. The story slowly forms a picture of Carla, trapped in a bad marriage, her unhappiness building into desperation until she decided to flee. The story of Carla is a story of the power and betrayals of love. It is about lost children and lots of chances that we can all find in life. There is pain beneath the surface, like a needle in the heart.Since she published her first collection of short stories in 1968, Munro has won many awards, with the Nobel Prize being her biggest honor. On Oct. 10, 2021, the Nobel Prize committee named Munro “the master of the contemporary short story〞.36. We learn from Paragraph 1 that Alice Munro_ . In the case study, students have to imagine they are mining(采(Cai)矿) on Mars and decide how to feed themselves there before starting on the journey. They get advice from Allen and Joyner on how to select crops and take the challenges of growing crops over long periods on Mars. Students use a scoring system to select three foods to plant on Mars.Allen found the results impressive: among 30students, "no two people have ever gotten the same answer", he said.Human travelers to Mars will likely have to make use of resources on the planet rather than take everything they need with them on a spaceship. "If I had to eat a single food for the rest of my life, could I do it?" Those who are spreading hate are frequently using the Internet as their tool. No country can 15 to make the Internet absolutely free. The question is how to keep free flow of information 16 while protecting children from unhealthy works, common citizens from 17 rumors and countries from unfair and damaging propaganda (宣传) attacks. Produced by Mango TV, the show invites female celebrities (名人), mostly over the age of 30, to stage performances that challenge showbiz (娱乐界) age stereotypes in China.Jonathan says that her foray (初次尝试) into Chinese reality shows is driven by her love of Chinese culture and wish to“ show a possible bridge between French and Chinese cultures”.“I haven’t participated in reality shows back in France,” she says. “I accepted this invitation because it is a huge challenge, and because I want to learn more Chinese and learn to sing in Chinese.”Jonathan’s parents both have a love of Chinese culture, and her mother runs a travel agency that began promoting tours to China in the 1990s. Since then, the 21-year-old student from Beijing Foreign Studies University has remained a city-walk fan, believing it to be the best way to “rediscover a city”.“I visited Beijing before the start of my college life here, and it was a typical package tourduring which going to scenic spots and taking photos was a big thing. The crowded tourist attractions gave me the impression that Beijing was a noisy place,” Zhao said. With the increasing variety of travel choices, traditional group tours no longer satisfy people who are looking for a more personal and different travel experience and hoping to explore every part of the city in a more immersive (沉浸式的) way.Compared with tightly scheduled routes (路线) and picture-taking tours, city-walking focuses on free, casual and spontaneous (自发的) experiences. The trending city-walk culture, which encourages experiencing urban life with no transportation means except one’s legs and feet, has also made splashes on various social media platforms. On the video-sharing app Douyin, the Chinese version of Tik-Tok, a recent video about citywalk routes in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, has gained more than 171,000 likes, with 72,000 viewers of all ages adding the video to their favorites. According to a report from lifestyle-sharing platform Xiaohongshu, in the first half of this year, searches about city-walks increased 30-fold from the previous year. “The route offers a glimpse (瞥见) into the culture and landscape in different historical stages, as well as its beautiful natural scenery,” it said.Following his experience in Beijing, Zhao has also explored Wuhan in Hubei province, Hangzhou in Zhejiang province and other cities through city-walking tours. “City-walking is all about doing whatever you want in your own exploration of a city, and it is actually the kind of slow-paced, low-carbon lifestyle that I relate to so much,” he said.8.Why do Zhao call city-walking the best way to “rediscover a city”?A.The variety of travel choices is limited.B.Traditional group tour totally satisfies people’s need.C.It is a more enjoyable and personal way to explore the city.D.Common tour wastes much time in taking pictures.9.What do we know about city-walk culture?A.It refers to a 30-minute walk on the video-sharing app Douyin.B.It encourages the experience of free urban life without transportation.C.It offers practical travel tips through social media platforms.D.It shows historical moments of life-sharing platform Xiaohongshu.10.What can we learn in the last but one paragraph?A.City-walk has gained popularity on the Internet.B.City-walk is only loved by young people.C.City-walk recommends the shortest route from one city to another.D.City-walk has both advantages and disadvantages.11.What is the best title of the passage?A.Walking Out from Home B.Culture of Walking Catching on in Cities C.A Popular Social Platform D.Going Free to Explore the WorldTeachers play an important part in helping students develop intellectual humility (智性谦逊) , both in how they respond to being wrong or challenge themselves and in the tone and structure they set for classroom discussions.Students develop more openness and resilience (适应力) in classes where teachers readily admit to their own mistakes and maintain a class environment encouraging students to react respectfully when peers disagree or make mistakes. And research suggests it’s worth it for teachers to give students more chances to deal with challenging conversations in respectful ways.In one set of experiments at Columbia University’s Difficult Conversations Lab, pairs of adults were told they would spend 20 minutes trying to find agreement on debatable topics. For some, researchers lead them to think about the topic complicatedly: They provided background information in which opposite views were given, and the pairs were clearly told to “consider different perspectives (观点) .” For others, researchers simply contrasted (对比) opposing views and told the pairs, “ It is important to have a clear perspective.” A third group was given no directions. While the pairs who took a complex approach were able to write a joint (共同的) statement on their topic, less than half of the pairs who took a simplistic approach came to an agreement. Moreover, the pairs engaged in more complex discussions acted less defensively (防御性地), asked more questions of each other, and felt more positive during the discussions than those who had more black- and- white arguments or no direction at all.“Dealing with difficult issues has always been uncomfortable, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s something we should shy away from,” McQueen said. “Creating space to analyzenuance (细微差别) and to let young people experience nuance is difficult when there’s so much curriculum content to get through,” McQueen said. “But it’s trying to flesh out (充实) complexity and nuance that’s going to lead to a far greater willingness for people to just look for the areas of gray in life, rather than racing to judgments that are really easy and lazy.”12.What does “peers” underlined in the second paragraph mean?A.Roommates.B.Playmates.C.Workmates.D.Classmates. 13.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?A.A doubt about the research methods.B.An explanation of the research results.C.An introduction to the research process.D.The application of the research findings. 14.What does McQueen suggest in the last paragraph?A.It’s meaningful for students to deal with difficult issues.B.Students should shy away from uncomfortable things.C.It’s useless for students to learn curriculum content.D.Students prefer easy and lazy judgments.15.Who might be the target readers of the passage?A.Editors.B.Educators.C.Doctors.D.Students.How to Do Better in SchoolThe start of a new school year is a great opportunity to improve your grades and experience at school, but you can choose to do better at any point during the year! 16 . Yaser was an international student from Jordan. He wanted to learn more about American culture and hoped thathe and Steve would become good friends. At first, Steve seemed very friendly. He always greeted Yaser warmly before class. Sometimes he offered to study with Yaser. He even invited Yaser to lunch with him. But after the term was over, Steve seemed distant (疏远的). The two former classmates didn't see each other very often at school. One day Yaser decided to call Steve. Steve didn't seem very interested in talking to him. Yaser was hurt by Steve's change of atti tude. “Steve said we were friends,” Yaser complained (抱怨), “and I thought friends were friends for ever.” Yaser is a little confused. As a foreigner, he doesn't understand the way Americans view friendship. Americans use the word “friend” in a very gene ral way. They may call both casual acquaintances and close companions “friends”. These friendships are based on common interests. When the shared activity ends, the friendship may fade(逐渐消失). Now as Steve and Yaser are no longer classmates, their “friendship” has changed. In some cultures friendship means a strong lifelong bond between two people. In these cultures friendships develop slowly, since they are built to last. American society is one of rapid change. Studies show that one out of five American families moves every year. American friendships develop quickly, and they may change just quickly as well. People from the United States may at first seem friendly. Americans often chat easily with strangers. But American friendliness is not always an offer of true friendship. After an experience like Yaser's people who've been in this country for only a few months may consider Americans to be fickle (易变的). They can even be deadly, as bad teeth can give out bacteria (细菌) into the blood system. Those bacteria can increase the chances of a heart disease and make other diseases worse. And adults are not the only ones at risk. For example, in 2008, a boy named Bob Clark died when bacteria from a bad tooth reached his brain. The doctor said it might have been prevented (防止) if he had received the dental care(牙齿护理). He was only twelve years old.In fact good dental care starts at birth. Mothers’ milk is the best food for babies and it does good to the healthy development of teeth. Mothers’ milk can help slow bacterial growth in the mouth. A baby’s mouth and early teeth should be cleaned after each feed, using a cloth with a little warm water. Do the same if a baby is fed with a bottle. When baby teeth begin to appear, you can clean them with a wet toothbrush. Experts say it is important to find soft toothbrushes made especially for babies and to use them very gently when children have full teeth. The use of fluoride (氟化物) to protect teeth is common in many parts of the world. For example, it is often added to drinking water supplies. The fluoride mixes with the hard surface of teeth to help prevent holes from forming. But young children often eat some toothpaste (牙膏) when they brush teeth. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry notes that swallowing (吞咽) fluoridated toothpaste can cause problems. So young children should be carefully supervised by adults when they brush their teeth. Once finding children swallow some toothpaste, adults should let them drink more water and try to make them throw up what is in the stomach. Go to see a doctor if it is necessary! It is commonly believed that we should brush teeth twice a day, that is, once after getting up and once before going to bed. However, experts say the times we brush our teeth should be decided by how many meals we have. And the best time to brush our teeth is within five minutes after the meal.29.
