A
Mother's Day is the occasion upon which children stop and say “thank you” to moms all over the world . Homemade cards express gratitude for countless meals cooked, wounds dressed and hugs given. Animal moms, on the other hand, never get any thanks. But animal moms are also great moms. You might be surprised at some of these moms.
Octopuses (章鱼)
The mother octopus lays about 50,000 eggs. For about 300 days, she stays with the eggs, cleans them and protects them. She does not leave to feed. However, this animal mom dies as soon as the eggs are hatched (孵化).
Crocodiles (鳄鱼)
A crocodile mother puts a lot of time and effort into raising her babies. She starts by building a nest, which she guards for over two months! When the eggs are ready to hatch, the young crocodiles call out to their mother, who digs them out and helps them hatch. She then carries them in her mouth down to the water, where she will guard them for several more weeks or months until they learn to hunt on their own.
Bats
Bats become moms by hanging head up in a cave, giving birth. Catching the youngster before it can fall to the ground below, she puts it in a pouch (育儿袋). Bat moms may carry babies with them when feeding for the first few days. As the little bats get bigger and heavier, moms help them hang on the wall of their caves and return often to feed them. It continues for about three weeks, until the babies are grown up and able to fly on their own.
Koalas (考拉)
The animal mom gives birth after a pregnancy (怀孕期) of only 35 days. The hairless baby climbs into its mother’s pouch and lives the re for another five months. When the little koala is between five and eight months old, it leaves the pouch for short periods of time but returns for safety. Once it is too big to return to the pouch, it will climb onto its mother’s back and ride there until it is about 12 months old.
21.A crocodile mother usually carries her baby to the water _____.
A. in her pouch
B. in her mouth
C. on her back

B. The little koala leaves the pouch at age between four and seven months old.
C. The animal mom needs to be pregnant for over two months before the baby's birth.
D.A young koala usually stays with its mom for twelve months.

Do you have any of these bad habits? Check yourself by answering “yes” or “no” to these questions:
a) Do you move your lips when reading silently?
b) Do you point to words with your finger as you read?
c) Do you move your head from side to side as you read?
d) Do you read one word at a time?
If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, start at once break the habits. If you move your lips, hold your fingers over them, or hold a piece of paper between your lips while you are reading. Then when your lips move, you will know it and stop them. If you point to words, hold the two sides of your book, one side with your left hand, the other side with your right hand. Then you won't have a free finger to use in pointing while reading. If you move your head, place your chin (下巴) in one hand, and hold your head still.
If you read no more than one or two words at a time, you need to work in learning to take in more words at each glance (横扫) as your eyes travel across the lines of words. Even if you read fairly fast now, you can learn to read even faster. As you probably have been told, the secret of fast reading is to take in whole groups of words at each glance. Read in several groups and force your eyes along the lines of words as fast as you can make them go. Anyone who practices doing these two things will be able to read faster.
24. What do you think of those habits talked about in the text?
A. We should remember those habits.
B. They are difficult to get rid of.
C.T hey are good for our studies.
D. We should give up those habits.
25. You may hold your finger over your lips while reading so as to .
A. hold a piece of paper between your lips
B. feel whether your lips move or not
C. keep yourself from talking to others
D. tell others to be silent
26. When your eyes travel across the lines of words, you need to .
A. read several words at a time
B. read the words out
C. look at every word carefully
D. remember every word
27. If you can read fairly fast now, _____. .
A. you don't need to learn to read faster
B. you can go on reading like that
C. you can learn to read even faster
D. you can enjoy reading
C
Everybody uses A. M. and P.M. to mean before noon and after noon. But do you know exactly what they mean and how they came into being?
We know that the turning of the earth makes the sun and stars seem to move across the sky. Daylight, of course, begins with the sun rising in the east and ends with the sun setting in the west. Being high in the sky, between these two positions, the sun has traveled a quarter journey. And half of the daylight hours have been spent.
Therefore, by noticing where the sun stood in the sky, early man learned how to tell the time of the day. At night, the stars were observed. He could also know the time.
The important thing in keeping time is to know the exact moment of noon. For each of us, wherever we are, noon is when the sun is directly overhead. Think of an imaginary(假想的) line, a meridian(子午线) drawn across the sky, going from the north point of your horizon down to the south point.
When the sun crosses your meridian, it is noon for you. When the sun still lies to the east of your meridian, it is morning. After the sun has crossed this meridian, it is afternoon.
The Latin word for "midday" is meridian, from which comes our word ante meridian, whose short form is A.M., which means before midday. P.M. is the short form for post meridian, meaning after midday.
28The English word "midday" means ________ .
A. ante meridian is Latin
B. P.M. in Latin
C. post meridian in Latin
D. meridian in Latin
29. Early man learned how to tell the time of the day ______ .
A .by knowing the exact moment of noon
B. by drawing a meridian across the sky
C. by noticing where the sun stood in the sky
D. by observing the positions the stars exist in the sky
30. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. A.M. means before noon in English and ante meridian in Latin.
B. P.M. is short for post meridian in Latin standing for after midday in English.
C. Daylight begins with the sun rising in the west and ends with the sun getting in the
east.
D. Meridian in Latin comes from our word meridian.
31. “Before midday” means________.
A. the sun has traveled a quarter journey
B. the sun hasn't traveled a quarter journey yet
C. half of the daylight hours have been spent
D. the sun has traveled half its journey.

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” But now scientists have given us another warning: too much play with smartphones or computers makes you dull too.
“Many focus on the benefits of digital devices(设备) in education but ignore the costs,” said Patricia Greenfield from the University of California, “losing the ability to understand the emotions of other people is one of the costs.”Greenfield and her research team did an experiment. They worked with 105 children who spend about 4.5 hours in front of screens on a school day. The students were asked to describe the emotions towards the pictures of people who were happy, sad, angry or scared. Then, half of them attended a five-day nature and science camp. There they had no smartphones, TV, or computers. The other half stayed in school and spent the five days as usual. Five days later, all the children took the test again.
Students who had been to the camp got about 5 percent more answers correct than they had done before the camp. But the other group of students didn’t show much improvement. The study is not perfect in some ways, said the researchers. But scientists say that the study is still a warning for us.
“Emotional skills develop in practice and the brain develops through real interaction.”
said Professor Taylor, a professor at the University of San Francisco.
Researchers talked to 2,000 parents of children aged 2-16 in the UK about what
activities their children could do confidently.
The results were surprising: Their children could use a tablet (平板电脑) (59%)
and work a mobile phone (57%) more confidently than they could tie their shoe laces(鞋带) (53%)!So, spend more time away from mobile phones and computers if you want to be an understanding friend, and not a member of what the Daily Mail called “Generation Helpless”.
32. According to Professor Greenfield, using digital media in education leads to _____.
A. being in bad terms with family members
B. making more mistakes when taking exams
C. failing to relate to other people's emotions
D. falling far behind others in all schoolwork
33. Scientists think the results of Greenfi eld’s experiment _____.
A. are far from perfect
B. are alarming for people
C. are quite surprising
D. need to be improved
34. What can we know from the text?
A. Students learned how to describe emotions in the experiment.
B. Too much play with digital devices raised some worries.
C. Students living without screens did much better in studies.
D. Most of the UK children couldn't tie their shoe laces.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Screens harm emotions
B. Here comes a digital world!
C. Stay away from the Internet
D. How people become addicted?

During the Spring Festival of year 2019, citizens in Yushan were not allowed to set off firecrackers or fireworks. There went a heated discussion on this policy. Some people say it is good way to create a peaceful atmosphere, while others think there is something lost without fireworks at such a festival. Different people have different ideas. From my point of view, it is worthwhile to prohibit citizens from setting off firecrackers.
To begin with, setting off firecrackers does great harm to our environment and our health. They always make serious air pollution and noise pollution. Also, the smog that crackers cause makes it difficult for us to breathe. Besides, it is dangerous to play firecrackers or fireworks and it is easy for people to get injured, especially children.
In a word, stopping citizens from playing firecrackers or fireworks is of great benefit to us. It is not necessary for the Spring Festival, because what we really need is reunion, quietness and happiness, rather than “bomb” and the smog.。
