For example,in Western cultures brides often choose a white wedding dress, while in China the traditional wedding dress is in red.

Though white has become the most preferred color for wedding gowns across the world today, this was not a widespread trend before the Victorian era.

Unit 7

Unit 7

4 “Hiroshima, as you know, is a city familiar to everyone,” continued the mayor.
Text
5 “Yes, yes, of course,” murmured the company, more and more agitated.
6 “Seldom has a city gained such world renown, and I am proud and happy to welcome you to Hiroshima, a town known throughout the world for its – oysters.”
Warming Up
HARRY TRUMAN: “The world will note that the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, a military base. We won the race of discovery against the Germans. We have used it in order to shorten the agony of war, in order to save the lives of thousands and thousands of young Americans. We shall continue to use it until we completely destroy Japan’s power to make war.” American planes dropped one of the bombs on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and another on Nagasaki 3 days later. Exactly how many people in those 2 cities died from the force and heat of the blasts or later from radiation may never be known. The Radiation Effects Research Foundation in Japan estimates that between 150,000 and 246,000 died within 2 to 4 months of the bombings. Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945, 6 days after the Nagasaki bombing.

Unit 7

Unit SevenSection AWhat the Hidden Persuaders Are up to Nowadays

Unit 7 Section A 翻译1The belief in the freedom of the individual is probably the most basic and most strongly held of all American beliefs. The most important thing to understand Americans is probably their devotion (深爱) to "individualism". They have been trained since very early in their lives to consider themselves as separate individuals who are responsible for their own situations in life and their own destiny. Americans view themselves as highly individualistic in their thoughts and actions. They resist being thought of as representatives of any homogeneous (由同类组成的) group. When they do join groups, they believe they are special, just a little different from other members of the same group. Closely associated with the value they place on individualism is the importance Americans assign privacy. Americans assume people "need some time to themselves" or "some time alone" to think about things or recover their spent psychological energy. Americans have great difficulty understanding foreigners who always want to be with another person and who dislike being alone.

1)Beijing, as the capital city, is the political, cultural and administrative center of the People’s Republic of China, as well as a fascinating metropolis that mixes the old and new. Beijing, as a settlement, has a history of more than 3,000 years. It is one of the few inland capitals(内陆首都) in the world that is not built beside a major river, which owes its long prominence to its strategic geographical position. Beijing is situated at 39o56' North Latitude(北纬) and 116o20' East Longitude(东经), majestically reposing on the northmost part of the North China Plain(华北平原); to the northwest lie Shanxi Province and the Inner Mongolian Steppe(内蒙古大草原), and towards the east is the Bohai Sea(渤海).2)Hutongs are a type of narrow streets or alleys, commonly associated with northern Chinese cities, most prominently Beijing. In Beijing, many neighborhoods were formed by joining one Chinese quadrangle (siheyuan) to another to form a hutong, and then joining one hutong to another. Hutongs represent an important cultural element of the city of Beijing. Thanks to Beijing’s long history and status as the capital for six dynasties, almost every hutong has its anecdotes, and some are even associated with historic events. In contrast to the court life (宫廷生活)and elite culture represented by the Forbidden City(紫禁城), the Summer Palace(颐和园), and the Temple of Heaven(天坛), the hutongs reflect the culture of grassroots Beijingers.。

Stew Leonard

But sometimes these can get in the way of schoolwork, and parents might worry about their success at school. Teenagers often think they should be allowed to practice their hobbies as much as they want. Do you agree?Liu Yu, a fifteen-year-old boy from Shandong, is a running star. He is on his school team and has always wanted to be a professional runner when he grows up. However, his parents won't allow him to train so much. “Of course we want to see him achieve his dreams, ”says Mr Liu, “and we know how much he loves running. My wife and I have supported every one of his races. We have nothing against running! But we do think our son needs to think about other possible jobs. He is getting older now, so he needs to think about what will happen if he doesn't end up as a professional runner.”Liu Yu doesn't really agree. “Well, I think I should be allowed to decide for myself,” he says. “ My parents have always taught me how important it is to work hard at school and enter university. I understand this, but I'm serious about running. It’s the only thing I have ever wanted to do.”His parents believe that Liu Yu should study hard in the evenings so they don't allow him to practice running at nights. “Maybe he thinks it’s too strict or unfair,”says Mrs Liu, “But we think we're doing the right thing. He needs to spend more time on his homework because it is difficult to become aprofessional sports star.”But Liu Yu still disagrees. “I know my parents care about me. They always talk about what will happen if I don't succeed. But I will! I’m a quick runner! I think I should be allowed to make this choice myself. Only then will I have a chance to achieve my dream.” 1.Parents should not be too strict with teenagers.strict adj 严格的,严厉的be strict with sb 对某人要求严格She is strict with her children.be strict in/ about sth We should be strict in (doing) our work2.

lira

5、
6,
