奇幻电影能够让观众接受的前提是讲好故事。
目前奇幻电影大多以中华传统文化为本位，杂糅了神魔、玄幻、武侠、动作等类型元素，借助特有的神怪文化资源完成阐释现实世界的意旨。
中国古代神话作为人类共同的记忆载体，凝结着人类的集体无意识，使人类从中能够探寻到共同的情感。
相当一部分奇幻电影选择了以民间传说、神魔故事作为文学叙事的母题，以多元化的视角去反观人性，借助不同世界的生灵重构超越自然的多维时空。
如《捉妖记》《哪吒之魔童降世》等奇幻电影将人、神、妖等不同世界的生灵放置在共生共存的空间中，试图唤起现代人心灵回归并实现精神层面的救赎。
作为本土民族文化色彩浓厚的电影类型，奇幻电影同时需要在传统经典故事文本基础上重新传达人类共同的心理情感，引发人们对现代文明危机进行反思，以追求人类共同的、永恒的价值。
《庄子》中说:“齐谐者，志怪者也。
”神怪故事的主题往往是诡异事件及妖鬼与人类的互动。
中国观众对神怪故事并不陌生，具有一定的接受基础，《聊斋志异》《西游记》《山海经》《搜神记》等传统经典文本中的故事往往被其他文艺样式取材改编，同样给奇幻电影提供了新的叙事空间。
奇幻电影对于传统经典文本的取材改编其实是二度创作的过程，需要调整故事设置与矛盾冲突进而凸显电影的戏剧性。
在人物刻画与塑造，场景的渲染与设置等方面需要更加生动，而往往设置出人意料的结局无疑会增加电影的趣味性与观赏性。
就目前奇幻电影“西游系列”的改编而言，在重构“西游”经典奇幻世界的过程中，比较注重对打斗场景的设计与视觉效果，借助数字技术创造出较为恢宏的场面。
然而，这些经过改编的奇幻电影，却在某种程度上割裂了原著的内在叙事性，形式大于内容的视觉奇观场景难以掩盖故事情节的缝隙与空洞，让观众感受不到要传达的核心精髓，无法塑造经典文本中那样生动的艺术形象。

奇幻电影需要新的思维模式推动整体叙事转型。
以人工智能等重要科技成果为标志，现代科学技术发展突飞猛进，也引起了保护自然和人类的生存警醒。
奇幻电影《流浪地球》改编的巨大成功，为中国电影工业及硬科幻文化产品带来发展的新趋势。
该部电影设置了科幻的时空概念等科学范畴的命题，在充满科技特性与工业基因的叙事话语中，穿插了营救地球过程中战友合作、牺牲以及父子祖孙之间的亲情等人文元素，与年轻一代观众的生活相接近，被称为国产电影中的现象级作品。
