“I do solemnly swear (or affirm)
thatIwill faithfully execute(执
行;实行;处决) theOffice of President of the UnitedStates, and will to the bestofmy ability, preserve, protect anddefendthe Constitution ofthe United States.”
Theworld isvery differe
ntnow. Forman holds in his mortal(致命的;终有一死的)hands the power to abolish(废除) allforms of humanpovertyand all formsof humanlife.
And yet the same revolutionarybeliefsforwhich our forebears f
ought arestill at issue(在争论、在争论中)around the globe, the beliefthat the rightsof mancome not from the generosity(慷慨,大方;宽容或慷慨的行为;丰富)of thestate, but from the hand of God.
在《独立宣言》中就有这样一段有关人权的论述: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, thatall men arecreated equal, that they are endowedby(被赋予)theirCreator with certain unalienable(不可剥夺的)Rights, that amongthesea re Life,Libertyand thepursuitofHappiness.”
Wedare not forgettoday t hat we are the heirs(继承人; 后嗣,嗣

and foe alike, that the torchhasbeen passed toa newgenerati on ofAmericans, born in this ce ntury, tempered by(受过锻炼)war, disciplined by(训练有素的)a hard and bitterpeace, proudof ourancient heritage--and unwillingto witnessor permit the slow undoing of thosehumanrights to which thi sNationhas always been committed(忠诚的,坚定的,把…托付给), andto which weare committedtodayat home andaroundthe world.
