J.D.大约要九十个学分才可以毕业。

研究院及高等专科学院开设的课程及学科，种类繁多，从核子工程到中国文学，从商业行政到法学与医学，不一而足。
念完研究院课程的学生，经校方核定，会颁发以下的学位：硕士学位（Master' Degree ）：学习时间两年学生录取需要通过G.R.E.考试(Graduate Record Examination)。

法律学博士学位需要从事纯法学理论研究工作，一般选择继续攻读此学位的美国本土人非常少，但是对于留学生来说如果拿到此学位将会是一个镀金的机会。
攻读法律学博士学位只需在美国学校就读一年，一年之后可选择离校后一边工作一边撰写论文，等到论文完成之后回美国学校答辩即可。
除了以上三种常见的学位之外，美国法学院还为在美国从事高级研究的外国法律家授予M.C.L.学位（即Master of Comparative Law 比较法硕士）；美国法学院会为对社会做出突出贡献的公民颁发LL.D.学位（即Doctor of Laws荣誉法律博士）。
