Pop Music

Some pop groups, in particular the Rolling Stones, did more than just entertain. They wrote words which were deliberately intended to shock. They represented the anger and bitterness of youth struggling for freedom against authority, and for this reason they were regarded by some people as the personification of the “permissive society”.

The Beatles, on the other hand, finally won the affection and admiration of people of all ages and social backgrounds. As they developed, their songs became more serious. They wrote not only of love, but of death and old age and poverty and daily life. They were respected by many intellectuals and by some serious musicians. Largely thanks to the Beatles, pop music has grown into an immense and profitable industry.

Dare To Make Mistakes

Mistakes are not only an acceptable part of life; they are essential to a full life. Without the intelligent use of our mistakes, we never go to master any skill.

George Bernard Shaw said, “A man learns t o skate by staggering about, making a fool of himself.” Indeed, he progresses in all things by resolutely making a fool of himself. But many of us, terrified by the possibility of failure or ridicule, deprive ourselves of pleasures, adventures and just plain fun by being too concerned with what people will think. Shattering as it may be to our egos, the fact is that most people never observe us as closely and critically as we believe.

Sometimes parents, to encourage top performance, set standards that are impossibly high. “They tell children so often that it will be a great disappointment if they do not measure up,” says Bonaro W Overstreet, in Understanding Fear, “ that they virtually force those children into an exaggerated fear of failure, and into an exaggerated self-dislike when failure occurs.”

Credit cards enable their holders to obtain goods and services on credit. They are issued by retail stores, banks, credit-card companies to approved clients. Although credit cards are becoming a more acceptable part of the financial scene, they are still regarded with suspicion by many as being a major part of the “live now, pay later” syndrome. Advertising campaigns have, however, promoted a growing realization of the advantages of these small plastic cards. They obviate need to carry large amounts of cash and are always useful in emergencies. All the credit organizations charge interest on a monthly basis which may work out as high as 25 percent a year, yet judicious using a card can mean that you obtain up to seven weeks’ interest-free credit.
