• Sometimes a black cat would ride away into the sky on the back of the witch's broom. And on Halloween night we'd dress up in Mom or Dad's old shoes and clothes, put on a mask, and be ready to go outside. The little kids (children younger than we were) had to go with their mothers, but we older ones went together to neighbors' houses, ringing their doorbell and yelling, "Trick or treat!" meaning, "Give us a treat (something to eat) or we'll play a trick on you!"

• Halloween (also spelled Hallowe'en) is an annual holiday celebrated on October 31. It has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holy day of All Saints. It is largely a secular celebration but some have expressed strong feelings about perceived religious overtones.

Halloween 英文介绍 ppt
Many of the traditions associated with Halloween can be traced back to the ancient festivals of Samhain and Hallowmas. Traditions include costuming, trick-ortreating, bobbing for apples, pumpkin carving, and the lighting of bonfires.
Costuming
Costumes were worn by the Celts for Samhain and the Christians for All Hallows’ Eve as a disguise to confuse and/or scare away the spirits/ghosts they believed were freely roaming the Earth from possessing their souls. Today, although we no longer believe that spirits are flying freely, modernized costumes are worn at Halloween by children going trick-ortreating and by adults seeking fun and amusement.
Thus, October 31st became known as All Hallows Eve, and eventually was shortened to the current day title, Halloween.

Monday Well, it's finally October, and there are only thirty days left until Halloween. Halloween is my FAVORITE holiday, even though Mom says I'm getting too old to go trick-or-treating anymore. Halloween is Dad's favorite holiday, too, but for a different reason. On Halloween night, while all the other parents are handing out candy, Dad is hiding in the bushes with a big trash can full of water. And if any teenagers pass by our driveway, he drenches them.

Halloween Costumes
Halloween costumes are traditionally those of monsters such as ghosts, skeletons, witches, and devils. Costumes are also based on themes, such as those of characters from television shows, movies and other pop culture icons.
About an hour before we were supposed to start trick-or-treating, I still didn't have a costume. At that point I was seriously thinking about going as a cowboy for the second year in a row. But then Mom knocked at my door and handed me a pirate costume, with an eye patch and a hook and everything.
The origin of Halloween
Halloween, or Hallowe'en, is a holiday celebrated on October 31. It began in Europe and was brought to America by the Irish Catholics. Oct 31 was believed to be a time when spirits roamed around looking for bodies to inhabit. People were superstitious at that time and believed this so much that they would dress up in costumes to disguise themselves to confuse and frighten spirits away and so they would not be selected by the spirits for "posession" of their bodies. Costumes and masks were also worn at the festivals in an attempt to mimic(模仿) the evil spirits or placate(安抚,平息) them.
