Her parents, Eric and Valerie Castillo, said she is likely the youngest person to reach that milestone. The family, from San Antonio, Texas, ended their travels with a trip to Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska. “Mission complete,” they wrote on Instagram. “After three years of adventure, countless logistics work and not giving up, we could not be more proud to share the conclusion of our quest.” Journey hasn’t been officially verified as the youngest traveler to visit all 63 parks. But more important than the title, her parents say, is the experience.“Our thing was: ‘Let’s… inspire in Journey a passion for nature, inspire in her that she can handle the strenuous parts of the traveling: the environments, the weather changes, different cultures.” Valerie Castillo told The Guardian’s Ramon Antonio Vargas. Before she could walk, Journey Castillo’s parents set out to visit every national park in the U.S. They hiked up Pikes Peak and explored Rocky Mountain National Park, all with an infant in tow. As far as they could tell, Journey seemed to enjoy herself.“We could see her little eyes open and take it all in,” Valerie Castillo told the San Antonio Express-News last year. “She was so aware, even being a few days old. She’s adapted so well.”They then ventured to Grand Canyon National Park — and decided to keep going. They set a goal of visiting 21 parks by Journey’s first birthday, then 42 parks by her second birthday. Eventually, they decided to go for all 63 parks. The family has been documenting every step of the way on Instagram and their website, Journey Go Explore.Reaching the last few parks on their list — all in Alaska — required lots of logistical management, including renting flights, ferry rides, and even special permission from theNational Park Service to visit a seasonally closed park. Though their visit was challenging at times, the Castillos say it helped their daughter develop confidence. Journey walks fearlessly through airports and happily greets park rangers. “When she’s out at these parks, she comes to life, and her personality brightens up,” Eric Castillo said.4.Why did Journey Castillo’s parents take her to visit all America’s national parks?A.To inspire others to be more active.B.To document their travels on Instagram.C.To inspire a passion for nature in Journey.D.To break a record as the youngest traveler.5.What does the underlined word “strenuous” probably mean in the third paragraph?A.identical B.appealing C.mild D.challenging 6.What did the parents perceive about Journey during their visits to national parks?A.She was uninterested in the surroundings.B.She adapted well and seemed to enjoy herself.C.She preferred staying indoors with her parents.D.She only enjoyed specific environments and attractions.7.How did Eric Castillo describe Journey’s personality during those travels?A.Shy and introverted.B.Reliable and anxious.C.Fearful and splendid.D.Enthusiastic and confident.“Don’t be a victim.” That’s a phrase you’ll hear a lot if you take a crime-prevention class. Basically, it means that there are steps you can take to reduce the likelihood that you’ll be mugged, assaulted, or otherwise attacked. Don’t wave your cash around like you’re a billionaire. Don’t be distracted on the subway. Walk with a purpose. That last one is particularly important, because according to a new study from the Journal of Interpersonal Violence, some criminals are very good at sensing weakness based on the way you walk. Actually, serial killer Ted Bundy admitted in a personal interview in 1985 that “he could tell a victim by the way she walked down the street, the tilt of her head, the manner in which she carried herself, etc…” Unfortunately, research demonstrated the reality that criminals do in fact look for, or at least notice certain characters when selecting potential victims. While nothing excuses crime, knowledge is power in the sense that there are things we can do to protect ourselves when we are out alone. In the report titled “Psychopathy and Victim Selection” the researchers surveyed 47 criminals at a maximum-security prison in Ontario and found that social predators are very good at picking victims based on their posture and gait(步伐). They noted that people might be releasing vulnerability to criminals through their postures, gestures, and exaggerated movements. The researchers secretly filmed 12 people walking — eight women and four men, some of whom had been attacked before. Then, they showed the video to a group of criminals and asked them whether or not each person would make a good victim. These “victim ratings” were then compared against each person’s actual history of victimization. Sure enough, the people whom the criminals picked as “likely victims” were usually the ones who had been victimized in the past. These people were often said to have “walked like an easy target” — slowly, unfocused, with short steps. The sample size here is really small. Maybe we shouldn’t give this study’s findings too much weight. Nevertheless, it emphasizes something that seems pretty unconscious. Criminals aren’t looking for a challenge. Rather, they want someone timid and inattentive. So stride down the street like you own it. Your new, aggressive gait may scare off criminals. And even if this study turns out to be total bullshit, you’ll still get where you’re going a lot faster. 8.Why does the author mention the serial killer Ted Bundy?A.To call on more people to learn psychology.B.To prove that someone can be a natural criminal.C.To demonstrate some skills to distinguish criminals.D.To emphasize the importance of the right walking habit.9.How did the researchers conduct their research on victim selection?A.By analyzing crime data in various neighborhoods.B.By filming people walking and getting criminals’ opinions.C.By filming criminals as they selected their potential victims.D.By studying the psychology of crime victims in a maximum-security prison. 10.According to the research which gait will most attract criminals’ attention?A.Distracted walking with short steps.B.Purposeful walking with slow steps.C.Walking with a group of people cheerfully.D.Walking with confident and exaggerated movements.11.What’s the author’s attitude toward walking confidently and aggressively?A.Favorable.B.Doubtful.C.Disapproving.D.Indifferent.I am neither Jewish nor Palestinian, and none of my six regular jobs have anything to do with foreign policy, but the other day I opened Twitter (now called X) after some time offline, only to find people I don’t know demanding that I make a public statement about what’s happening in the Middle East. It seemed that most of the people on social media had made a statement, including various well-known brands, celebrities and lifestyle influencers.I saw lots of random citizens being told that if they didn’t speak out, they, too, would have blood on their hands. Taking a stand on social media instantly will win wild applause but reduces complex issues to a simple yes or no.Those social media posts without serious thinking are not what bother me most, though. Instead, it’s the idea that not posting is wrong — that everyone needs to speak, all the time. It discourages shutting up and listening and letting the voices that matter the most be heard over the noise. It implies it’s not OK to have any uncertainty about what’s going on. It does not leave time or space for people to process disturbing events in their own minds or to gather more information before pronouncing a judgment. It pressures people who don’t have an opinion yet or are working out what they think to produce one opinion immediately and present it to an audience of total strangers on the Internet who will quickly judge whether it’s appropriate or not.“Nothing pays off like self-control of tongue and pen,” writes A.A.’s co-founder Bill Wilson. “We must avoid quick-tempered criticism and extreme anger,” which he calls “emotional idiot got trapped by pride and revenge.” While I’ve regretted posting half-formed thoughts too quickly, I’ve never regretted waiting until I was less angry or not posting at all. 12.Why does the author mention his/her race and jobs in the first paragraph?A.To reflect the author’s professional research background.B.To introduce the topic of the widespread use of social media.C.To discuss the impact of social media violating personal privacy.D.To express dissatisfaction with commenting on something without personal ties. 13.What bothered the author most about social media posts?A.Pressure to take a stand.B.Shutting up and listening.C.Lack of diversity in opinions.D.Complex issues reduced to yes or no.14.What can we infer based on what Bill Wilson said?A.Avoiding creating argument is a virtue.B.Quick-tempered criticism is rewarding.C.Producing immediate opinion is an ability.D.Control of what you say and write is beneficial.15.Which would be the best title for this text?A.“Speak Out for the Disadvantages in a Social Media Age”B.“I Don’t Have To Post About My Anger, Neither Do You”C.“Silence Is Golden: A Guide to Ignoring World Issues Like a Pro”D.“Keep Angry, Keep Reasonable: Avoiding the Mess on Social Media”How to Have Open CommunicationWhen you can communicate openly, you can start improving your relationships, both personal and professional, in a number of ways. 16 There are a few things that you can do when you have an open conversation.17 Be mindful of where and when you need to have a discussion with someone, especially if you are having an important disagreement. Someone is not likely to be open when communicating if you are surrounded by family or out in public. Therefore, have a discussion when it’s more convenient for both you and your partner.Have patience. When emotions are high, it can be easy to be swept in those feelings and want to get all your points across. But this can make communication more difficult because you are so focused on your feelings that you aren’t able to focus on what you need to say. Be patient and allow for silences that happen. 18Take the time to listen to what the other person is saying. 19 This allows you to see if there is any misunderstanding and allows you the time to understand his words accurately. You don’t need to agree on all his words, but it is important to understand where they’re coming from.Be honest with your thoughts and your feelings. Sometimes we feel the need to soften our words to lessen the blow. 20 After all, when we leave out certain details, we’re not able to communicate openly. You need to be honest with your partner about your needsand your experiences. By doing so, you’re hopefully closer to being able to tackle the issue.A.Wait for the appropriate time and place.B.Discuss what you need to communicate openly.C.Bring something positive into your communication.D.This could be because we don’t want to hurt the other person.E.Ask questions if you need to and even repeat what he has said.F.Open communication increases trust and helps bridge differences.G.Sometimes you need time to think and accurately express yourself.二、完形填空Krista Sheneman was diagnosed with diabetes (糖尿病) around five years ago. Thus, humans have come up with a few designs of vehicles to move around under the ocean. But what if there was a better way to travel?Hilary Bart-Smith, an engineer at the University of Virginia, thinks a vehicle that travels like a manta ray (魔鬼鱼) would be able to operate for long periods at sea. Manta rays which can grow up to 29 feet long are among the most efficient swimmers in the ocean. Different from animals and people pushing against water, manta rays swim by moving through the water with wing-like movements of their fins (鳍) . Efficiency means using less energy to move farther.Bart-Smith and other engineers at the University of Virginia had to find out what manta rays looked like on the inside to better understand how they move. They took X-rays to find out how a manta ray's fins are built. They found that a web of cartilage (软骨) stretches across each fin.Once the engineers knew how a manta ray's fin was constructed, they could build one of their own. They made a long row of metal struts with many hinges to imitate the manta ray's web of cartilage. The engineers put their design inside a flexible cover, shaped like a manta ray's fin. Then they tested it in the university swimming pool. They were happy to see that it swam just like a manta ray in the ocean.Engineers and scientists are still learning and experimenting with how to imitate these amazing animals. For now, engineers study their movements and learn from the most efficient swimmers in the ocean. Perhaps someday engineers will be able to build manta ray robots that are big enough to transport people.8.How do manta rays swim?A.By moving like birds.B.By swimming like humans.C.By swimming like other fishes.D.By pushing against water like animals. 9.What can we learn from the second and third paragraphs?A.Manta rays look like travel vehicles.B.Manta rays are the fastest swimmers.C.Manta rays can grow at least 29 feet long.D.Manta rays'fins consist of a web of cartilage.10.Why do the engineers study manta rays?A.To learn about their habits.B.To control manta ray robots.C.To protect marine creatures.D.To design undersea vehicles.11.What's the author's attitude towards the research?A.Supportive.B.Negative.C.Doubtful.D.Objective.The most obvious dog fetish (迷恋) today is the longing for cuteness. Almost every day you can see adorable pictures of dogs and other animals that will make you smile and say, "How cute! "It is a cultural phenomenon that the media scholar James Meese calls the "cute economy' which exists primarily on social media, is user-generated, and is heavily dominated by pictures of animals, especially pets. The goal is to generate a positive response, probably followed by a tap on the screen to “like” and “share”. We can click through image after image of cute animals doing cute things, feeling a little boost of good cheer. The marketing researchers have identified some of the most common categories of cuteness in online pet content: animals doing silly things;animals of extreme size;animals with unusual looks;and animals behaving in ways that seem human-like. Dogs and other animals in the "cute economy" are often further humanized by being dressed in clothing and accessorized (装饰) with hats, jewellery, nail polish and fur dyed a rainbow of colors. Users who post successfully and with some strategies can make money by doing so. Thus, certain dogs have become cuteness celebrities, with millions of devoted followers and paid content from advertisers.Unfortunately, the price of the "cute economy" comes at a serious cost. The cutest and most popular breeds tend to be those with the most significant risk of health and behavioral problems. Cuteness is often coupled with their discomfort. People are drawn to the cuteness of dogs with extremely foreshortened skulls and extremely short legs and awkwardly long bodies, such as the French bulldog and the corgi.Actually, there are well-established health issues. We should treat the "cute economy' with caution, like resisting the commodification (商品化) of appearance by opting out of social media channels promoting the "cute economy". We can also choose not to "like" or"share" images of dogs whose cuteness is linked with discomfort. Although we are biologically attracted to dogs that are super cute, we should be mindful in our "impulses". 12.What is the key to the "cute economy" according to the text?A.Cute animals' attractive appearance.B.Taking pictures of different animals.C.Pet owners' liking adorable pictures.D.Posting cute animals' pictures on social media.13.Which kind of cuteness is most likely to be the online pet content?A.A normal-sized dog is eating bones.B.A white cat is quietly lying next to its owner.C.A monkey is attentively taking care of its baby.D.A parrot dressed in a suit is singing and dancing.14.What is the side effect of the "cute economy"?A.It will change the animals' nature.B.It may make the animals not so cute.C.It may cause health problems to the animals.D.It will result in a decline in animal population.15.What may be the best title for the text?A.Marketing Strategy-CutenessB.The Cute Economy and Its PriceC.Happiness from PetsD.Share Pictures or Not二、七选五16.Anyone experiences a failure occasionally. I had treated myself to an expensive fitness watch that tracked my time, pace and splits. At the end of my final training run—an exhausting 21 miles (34km) —I threw myself down on the floor the moment I got home, only to see my watch had failed me. Twenty-one miles briefly flashed on the screen before it went blank and disappeared for ever. I screamed in pain. That tragic image of me crying on my living room floor pretty much sums up my relationship with exercise tracking technology. It can be a total joy to watch your data change on running apps as you get stronger and faster. I once got a kick out of it, but at some point it became a stick I used to punish myself. I would watch my pace, compare it with other people’s or criticize myself for not doing it 30 seconds faster. I never really recognized exercise tracking as a problem. It seemed to me that tracking was the route to self-improvement, and the point was to improve, wasn’t it? The point was to be better. In the past year, the concept of “being better” has taken on a different meaning. My mental health dropped, and things that were once easy such as brushing my teeth became unimaginably difficult. Being better stopped meaning getting faster or stronger. It meant taking care of myself and feeling some joy in a day. Once I started getting better, I reflected on what in my life made me happy and what did not. So, I stopped tracking my runs and simply deleted years’ worth of data that was once very important to me and now meant nothing. What has become very clear to me since I quit tracking my runs is that I genuinely love doing them.I run around my local park with a silly little smile on my face. I love it so much. But I do not love running quickly. I do not like races. I do not want to be pushed to be faster. Things I notice about my runs now include: how my legs feel and how my mind feels afterwards-clear and focused. I notice dogs, the smell of the wild plants along the canal and the sunshine (OK, wind and rain) on my face.I am better. Or sometimes I am worse. But either way I’m slowly plodding along, and that’s good enough.24. The author cried after the final training run because she ________.A.had to stop working out B.became physically worn outC.lost the data on the watch D.felt a sharp pain in the legs25. The author used to view exercise tracking as ________.A.a fun hobby for enjoyment B.a strong need for recognitionC.a method of escaping punishment D.a way of being a better runner26. What does “being better” mean to the author now?A.Getting pleasure out of winning races. B.Being more focused on her life goal.C.Freeing herself from demanding tasks. D.Improving her overall well-being.27. What can we conclude from this passage?A.Adjustment brings happiness. B.Passion is the key to success.C.Sports contribute to happiness. D.Success equals self-improvement.As higher education leaders dive deeper into the conversation on Digital Transformation and Education 4.0, they are also learning how to incorporate the Digital Twins realm concept into their curricula, because Digital Twin technology can serve the university of the future.A Digital Twin is a virtual representation of a real object or system which is updated from real-time data and uses machine learning, simulation (模拟), and reasoning to help decision-making. In other words, a Digital Twin can create a highly complex virtual model which is the exact replica of a physical thing. Connected sensors on a smart campus can collect data in real time. This data is used to create a map onto the virtual model, thus creating a Digital Twin of a campus. When school administrators look at the Digital Twin, they can see crucial information about how the real campus is doing. The applications for Digital Twin technology do not stop there. Students and faculty can benefit from using the technology as well. For example, hybrid classrooms have become more and more common nowadays. Digital technologies have accelerated the transition into the university of the future. Digital Twin technology, one of the trending technologies related to Industry 4.0, helps faculty create simulation models based on course requirements.Digital Twin technology makes the ultimate immersive learning experience possible. By using a Digital Twin, students can learn highly engaging tasks which can be too dangerous, complex, or expensive for the classroom. Rather than hands-on laboratory dissection of a physical frog to learn animal science or having to wait for available human organs in the health science lah, medical students can use the virtual twin of an animal or human organs for their study. The complexity of chemistry or microbiology requires students to be totally engaged. By using Digital Twins in a Virtual Reality simulated learning experience, faculty can achieve a maximum level of engagement helping each student learn abstract concepts in their own unique way and much faster. By running simulations, students can better explore system behavior under different conditions, understand failure and develop an understanding of system sensibilities as well as how changes in the system parameters (参数) and external disruptions make an impact on the results. Some universities, such as Stanford and Copenhagen School of Marine Engineering, have incorporated Digital Twin technology into their teaching curricula, applying it to disciplines like architecture and engineering as they believe they are the reality of the industry. Overall, this enhances student motivation, accelerates understanding, and improves the overall learning experience. Moreover, the industry encourages universities to incorporate educational Digital Twins in automation to give students the initial understanding of tools and skills they will need in their future.28. It can be learned from Paragraph 2 that Digital Twins ________.A.remain a concept B.are virtual copies of real objectsC.represent future education D.can operate campuses remotely29. Which of the following statements might the author agree with?A.Education 4.0 facilitates the development of Digital Twins.B.New technology poses potential threats to college teachers.C.Digital Twin technology in higher education is on the horizon.D.Virtual classrooms have grown in popularity under Industry 4.0.30. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?A.B.C.D.The idea that we need to eat meat to get enough protein and iron, a false assumption of some Paleo diet (原始饮食) advocates, is a common misconception. It ignores the abundance of protein and iron in many plant-based foods such as nuts and seeds. Likewise, while we typically associate omega-3 fatty acids with fish, fish themselves incorporate these into their tissue by eating seaweed, which we can consume directly without the concerns of exposure to microplastics in fish flesh.Indeed, a whole-food, plant-based diet can provide all essential nutrients except for vitamin B12, made by bacteria in soil and ingested by animals, thereby incorporated into their tissue, milk, and eggs. While modern sanitation allows humans to consume clean produce unpolluted by dirt, we can easily and cheaply obtain oral B12 supplements.Evidently, significantly reducing our consumption of meat would carry vast benefits. Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death around the world. Eating highly processed foods and red meat has been repeatedly demonstrated to promote underlying mechanisms of cancer and cardiovascular disease, such as inflammation (炎症) and damage to the lining of blood vessels (血管).Mounting evidence points to the benefits of a whole-food, plant-based diet. Studies from 2017found that a vegetarian diet is associated with a 25 percent relative risk reduction for coronary heart disease and an 8 percent relative risk reduction for cancer, with a vegan diet related to a 15 percent relative risk reduction for cancer. The World Health Organization has classified processed meat as carcinogenic (致癌的), and (unprocessed) red meat as probably carcinogenic to humans. In addition to harming ourselves, eating meat harms others. Factory farming practices often entail unspeakable cruelty to animals, and working conditions for human laborers are often unsafe and inhumane as well. Overcrowding of livestock and workers promotes the spread of disease among both people and animals, putting us all at risk for future pandemics. The overuse of “routine” antibiotics (抗生素) to accelerate animal growth and precautiously treat the infections anticipated as a result of living in unclean and overcrowded conditions can promote antibiotic resistance. While large-scale, well-coordinated national and international action is undoubtedly needed to fight unscrupulous factory farming practices-and to ensure the availability of nutritious and healthy foodfor all citizens, those with greater influence, such as physicians, educators and policy makers, should consider the importance of acting as role models for healthy behaviors themselves as well as advocating for policies that ensure better nutritional access and education for others. All of these should not be excuses for individuals to resist implementing change in their own lives and communities. Societies change when enough individuals within them alter their behavior, and it is up to each of us to act as a change agent in whatever capacity we can. We would all be well served to pull this lever in our own lives as well.31. The author writes the first two paragraphs mainly to ________.A.show the concerns of Paleo diet advocatesB.compare the differences between two dietsC.highlight the importance of nutrition intakeD.point out a misunderstanding in nutrition source32. Which of the following logic chains is reasonable according to the passage?A.B.C.D.33. What does the underlined word “unscrupulous” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?A.Illegal. B.Unfair. C.Immoral. D.Unnecessary. 34. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A.A Meatless Diet Is Better for You B.Food Problems Call for Joint EffortsC.Say No to Processed Meat Consumption D.Eatable Greens or Not? That Is aQuestionWe humans are comparison creatures. 35 This quality may have evolved as a means of helping us fit into the social hierarchy (等级) of the cultures we inhabited. Regardless of the reasons, social comparison plays a significant role in how we view and evaluate ourselves, and how we interact with our world. It used to be that our primary reference of comparison was our local communities, primarily neighbors and co-workers. Because we tend to gather around those similar to ourselves in terms of educational level, work income, and shared interests, the range of differences when we compared ourselves to others was fairly small. Unfortunately, with the emergence of the Internet, we can nowcompare ourselves to literally anyone in the world. 36 What had in previous generations been a small gap in our comparisons has now become so large and unattainable.37 When so many people that are easily discoverable on the Internet seem to be so successful. famous, influential and beautiful, given our preference to compare, it is difficult not to have it influence how we view ourselves. Sadly, these comparisons usually result in our feeling inadequate and “less than”.These harmful comparisons also damage our emotional lives. When we feel lacking, we experience a variety of unpleasant and unhealthy emotions. We feel jealousy and envy for what others have and what we lack. 38It’s one thing to realize that you compare yourself to others. It’s another thing to recognize that social comparison is often corrosive (逐步侵蚀的) to you in so many ways psychologically and emotionally. It’s an entirely other thing to stop yourself from comparing yourself to others. 39Egocentrism is the inability to accurately understand any perspective other th an one’s own. To those who are egocentric, there are two types of opinions: “mine and the wrong ones”.Egocentrism is very unpleasant. Suffering from it, people often find themselves in a situation of conflict or loneliness because they do not recognize the rights of others to their personal feelings, desires, and interests. They also fail to look at circumstances from the other person’s side.Humanity must overcome it to see a holistic (全面的) picture of the world and objectively assess situations. It is essential to be a fair-minded individual since egocentrism is a quality that is not easy to live with, making it hard for us to interact with people and move forward.Actually, overcoming this disturbing quality has always been my pursuit. The main goal in my life is based on the search for inner balance, harmony, positivity, and the right attitude to life cases. Thus, I will be able to improve my life and help other people in the practice of this aspect. Moreover, I often remind myself to accept differences and remember that a correct attitude to different personalities, their preferences, and interests leads to success in any tasks. The formation and development of a fair mind can be practiced almost everywhere. For example, in a grocery store, we need to put ourselves in the place of the seller’s and should not immediately take offense and argue when we are given an unripe banana or burnt bread. It is important to remember that a seller is not obliged to play along at all; this is the same person with his unique nature. Not everyone agrees with everyone else, but if you absolutely refuse to consider another person’s perspective, that’s when egocentrism becomes a serious concern. So why not try to correct this behavior and be more fair-minded?40. What is egocentrism?________________________________________________________________________________ ________41. Why does egocentrism often lead to conflicts?________________________________________________________________________________ ________42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. Egocentrism becomes a problem when someone doesn’t agree with others.________________________________________________________________________________ ________43. Please share one of your own experiences about your practicing being fair-minded. They are very colorful, often decorated with hearts, flowers or birds, and have humorous or sentimental verses printed inside. The basic message of the verse is always “Be My Valentine”, “Be My Sweet Heart” or “Lover”. A valentine is anonymous, or sometimes signed “Guess Who”. The person receiving it has to guess who sent it. This can lead to interesting speculation. And that’s half the fun of valentines. The affectionate message might be carried by a heart-shaped box of chocolate candies, or by a bunch of flowers tied with red ribbon. But in whatever form, the message is the same —“Will you be my valentine?” One of the symbols of Valentine’s Day is the Roman god of love, called Cupid. Cupid is often printed on the card, who is a winged infant without wearing anything, poised to shoot his arrow into a heart. He would shoot an arrow of love into a person’s heart to make the person fall in love immediately, maybe with the first person to come along. Sometimes one arrow would go through two hearts, holding them together. (3) So on February 14th, not only do we have pictures of the Christian St. Valentine but we also have pictures of the non-Christian Cupid, the Roman god of love. It is from the Christians that we get the stories about Valentine’s Day that most people have come to believe. One story is about a Christian man whose name sounded something like “Valentine”. He lived around 250 AD. At that time the Roman emperor Claudius refused to allow any Roman soldiers to get married for any reason whatever. Christian couples came to Valentine to be married. He was discovered and put in prison by the emperor. One tradition says that he wrote notes to his friends by marking on leaves and then throwing them out of the window of his prison. And the leaves were shaped like aheart. There are many favorite songs of Valentine’s Day. Sally was very excited because she had never travelled on a train before. She sat near the window and asked questions about everything she saw. Suddenly, a middle-age lady got on the train and sat opposite Sally. “Hello, little girl,” she said. Sally did not answer, but looked at her curiously. The lady was dressed in a blue coat and a large, funny hat. After the train had left the station, the lady opened her handbag and took to her powder compact. She then began to make up. “Why are you doing that?” Sally asked. “To make myself beautiful,” the lady answered. She put away her compact and smiled kindly. “But you are still ugly.” Sally said. Social networking sites have become virtual extensions of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with your friends? In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children wereup to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realisation has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites. These days many people are attracted to social networking sites becaus e they can choose who they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is controlled when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member. It’s a di fficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don’t want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores their request: “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he is hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of his life where he wants to exert his independence.”Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friends list.46.Who do we all love and turn to when we’re in need?A.
