高二上学期英语寒假作业11_(有答案)

高二英语寒假作业11命题人:刘春杨审核人:史小娟训练日期:2月 11日Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say,“ My spoken English is poor.”_56_I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. _57_. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if you choose a positive attitude. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know._58_.Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However, in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn’t matter._59_.The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor._60_.A.The person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.B.They may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time.C.Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary.D.If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.E.However, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor”!F.Second, they are afraid of making mistakes.G.The second reason lies in the reluctance of using what has just been learned.短文改错Dear Ms Smith,I am secretary of the City Student Union (CSU). It was in that moment that I felt a deep tension.I realized that even though I had married a man who I absolutely loved and adored, I really didn’t have a clear sense of how he handled money and how the two of us were going to combine our different approaches to handling money in our marriage.I was more organized and detailed, but he was more of a laid-back type. I knew that getting on the same financial page was a key factor in creating a successful marriage and financial future.I asked my husband if he would be willing to set up a time each week to talk about our finances and develop a plan for getting rid of our credit card debt. My husband said he would be willing to do this. Admittedly, he was skeptical — but willing. We came to refer to our weekly meetings as our Financial Dates. We didn’t really have a clue as to what we were doing. All we knew was that we needed to give our finances serious attention. Some Dates were filled wit h tense conversations. Other Dates were filled with laughter, joy and creativity. However, we kept showing up for our Dates and we never gave up. What started out as a means for survival became a powerful connecting thread in our relationship. Something shifted within us.Instead of our finances becoming a source of divisive tension that pulled us apart, they becamethe glue that held us together as we became a unified team.I still recall the day that we excitedly crossed off our last credit card payment on the chart we had created. We had finally arrived. We were free. We had been given wings to fly. Now, whenever I feel huge stress I ask myself, “How am I contributing to what is happening right now?” This gives me the ultimate power to take action. Even though my husband and I don’t have any guarantee against future challenges, I am left with something deep within that is unshakable and that can never be taken away — the memory of our past successes and the power to integrate (整合) these lessons in my day-to-day life.4. Why did the author feel nervous when collecting the afternoon mails? _______A. She was not sure about her marriage.B. She didn’t know how to handle money.C. She could feel the pressure of the huge debt.D. She was reminded of the quarrels in the family.5. Which word can replace the underlined word “laid-back” in the second paragraph?_____A. relaxed.B. skeptical.C. lazy.D. confident.6. What can we learn from the Financial Dates? ______A. They showed the couple clear direction at first.B. They left the couple nothing but deep sadness.C. They were once interrupted but quickly continued.D. They strengthened the couple’s relationship at last.7. We can infer that when faced with stress the author will _______.A. try to change the situationB. focus on what contributes to itC. get power from the memoryD. feel free to do what she likesCSuppose you become a leader in an organization. It’s very likely that you’ll want to have volunteers to help with the organization’s activities. To do so, it should help to understand why people undertake volunteer work and what keeps their interest in the work.Let’s begin with the question of why people volunteer. Researchers have identified several factors that motivate people to get involved. For example, people volunteer to express personal values related to unselfishness, to expand their range of experiences, and to strengthen social relationships. If volunteer positions do not meet these needs, people may not wish to participate. To select volunteers, you may need to understand the motivations of the people you wish to attract.People also volunteer because they are required to do so. To increase levels of community service, some schools have launched compulsory volunteer programs. Unfortunately, these programs can shift people’s wish of participation from an internal factor (e.g., “I volunteer because it’s important to me”) to an external factor (e.g., “I volunteer because I’m required to do so”). When that happens, people become less likely to volunteer in the future. People must be sensitive to this possibility when they make volunteer activities a must.Once people begin to volunteer, what leads them to remain in their positions over time? To answer this question, researchers have conducted follow-up studies in which they track volunteers over time. For instance, one study followed 238 volunteers in Florida over a year. One of the most important factors that influenced their satisfaction as volunteers was the amount of suffering they experienced in their volunteer positions. Although this result may not surprise you, it leads to important practical advice. The researchers note that attention should be given to “training methods that would prepare volunteers for troublesome situations or provide them with strategies for coping with the problem they do experience”.Another study of 302 volunteers at hospitals in Chicago focused on individual differences in the degree to which people view “volunteer” as an important social role. It was assumed that those people for whom the role of volunteer was most part of their personal identity would also be most likely to continue volunteer work. Participants indicated the degree to which the social role mattered by responding to statements such as “Volunteering in Hospital is an important part of who I am.”Consistent with the researchers’ expectations, they found a positive correlation (正相关) between the strength of role identity and the length of time people continued to volunteer. These results, once again, lead to concrete advice: “Once an individual begins volunteering, continued efforts might focus on developing a volunteer role identity.... Items like T-shirts that allow volunteers to be recognized publicly for their contributions can help strengthen role identity”.8. People volunteer mainly out of ______ .A. academic requirementsB. social expectationsC. financial rewardsD. internal needs9. What can we learn from the Florida study? _______A. Follow-up studies should last for one year.B. Volunteers should get mentally prepared.C. Strategy training is a must in research.D. Volunteers are provided with concrete advice.10. What is most likely to motivate volunteers to continue their work?_____A. Individual differences in role identity.B. Publicly identifiable volunteer T-shirts.C. Role identity as a volunteer.D. Practical advice from researchers.11. What is the best title of the passage?______A. How to Get People to VolunteerB. How to Study Volunteer BehaviorsC. How to Keep Volunteers’ InterestD. How to Org anize Volunteer ActivitiesDMany people rely on a cup of coffee or two to wake them up in the morning or pick them up during the working day, but now a chemist has come up with a speedy alternative to crafting a cup of coffee.U.S. biochemist Ben Y u has created ‘Sprayable Energy,’ which claims to be the world’s first caffeine - based topical energy spray. He said tired workers can spray a ‘shot’ of caffeine onto their skin without experiencing a strong buzz, loading up on unnecessary calories or being stuck with a nasty aftertaste like they might get from drinking energy drinks or coffee. The patent-pending caffeine spray is an odourless liquid that is absorbed through the skin and distributed through the body over a number of hours to deliver a caffeine hit that apparently lasts longer than guzzling a cup of coffee. Each small aluminum bottle of Sprayable Energy contains around 160 sprays - the equivalent amount of caffeine to 40 cups of coffee and the creators say it is a much cheaper way o f getting a caffeine fix than popping to a café. The only active ingredient in the spray is caffeine, which can naturally enter the human body through the skin by passing through cell membranes as it is very similar to nicotine in structure. Each spritz of Sprayable Energy contains around a quarter of the amount of caffeine found in a cup of coffee, but apparently has the same effect as a full cup.The website said: ‘The reason for this is our product not being ingested, isn’t almost entirely metabolised(新陈代谢) by the liver before entering your system and becoming available to your body.’‘Thus, a smaller amount of caffeine can have just the same effect as a very large amount of caffeine ingested through an energy drink or cup of coffee. Sprayable Energy`s website recommends that users apply the spray in places where they normally spritz perfume, such as the neck or wrists, but warns users not to exceed 20 sprays a day.It claims that after spraying the product on the skin, users will feel ‘awake and focused without being over-stimulated’, which is common with coffee and energy drinks.12. What can we learn about Sprayable Energy from the passage ?_______.A. A bottle of Sprayable Energy is cheaper than 40 cups of coffee. .B. Sprayable Energy lets users not worry about taking in unnecessary calories..C. Sprayable Energy can be used at least 20 sprays a dayD. The caffeine spray is a colorless liquid that is absorbed through the skin..13. What does the fifth paragraph mainly tell us ?____A. Sprayable Energy is taken by mouth...B. Before Sprayable Energy is absorbed by body, the liver entirely metabolizes itC. How Sprayable Energy acts on user’s body and how users use the product.D. Sprayable Energy is convenient but expensive.14. We can conclude from the passage that ____A.Sprayable Energy can not be permitted to be used by people now.B. Sprayable Energy has not already gone into mass productionC. Each spritz of Sprayable Energy has the same effect as a full cup of coffeeD. Sprayable Energy is well received by flagging workers.15.

A way to be with customersIn the summer vacation of 1997, I was fixed with a job. I worked as an assistant at Mr. Breen’s fruit shop. The fruit shop did good business. Most of the trade came from the housewives who lived in the neighbourhood, but he also had regular customers who arrived outside the shop in cars. Mr. Breen knew them all by name and they sometimes even had their order already made up, always getting me to carry it out to their car. They were clearly long-standing customers, and I suppose they must have stayed faithful to him because he had promised to sell good quality fruit. He had a way with them—I had to admit that. He called every woman “madam〞 for a start, even those who clearly were not, but when he said it, it did not sound like flattery. It just sounded polite in an old-fashioned way. He was a great chatter as well. If he did not know them, he would greet them with a few words about the weather, but if he did, he would ask about their families or make jokes, always cutting his cloth according to his customers. Whatever their bills came to, he always gave them back the few odd pence, and I am sure they thought he was very generous. But I thought he was the opposite. He never threw anything away. He was always looking for something for nothing.二、词汇训练1. His________〔收入〕allows of no extravagance in his way of living.2. Such________〔随意的〕dress would not be correct for a formal occasion.3. The wall was built in 1600s. New York was then a Dutch city set up by people come from Holland in Europe. It was called New Amsterdam. The America Indians were not always friend of the Dutch, nor were the English. But the Dutch built the wooden wall to protect their town. The wall has gone now. But Wall Street reminds the people to New York of the Dutch who settle there.四、阅读理解AOne evening Mr. Green was driving in his car along a lonely country road. He had been to London where he had drawn £50,000 from the bank, and he was now returning home with the money which he had put in his pocket book.At the loneliest part of the road a man in shabby, badly-fitting clothes stopped him and asked for a lift. Mr. Green told him to get into the car and continued on his way. As he talked to the man he learned that he had been in prison for robbery and had broken out of prison two days ago. Mr. Green was very worried at the thought of the £50,000 that he had put in his pocket book.Suddenly he saw a police-car and had a bright idea. He had just reached a small town where the speed limit was 30 miles an hour. He pressed down the accelerator and drove the car as fast as it would go. He looked back and saw that the police-car had seen him and had begun to chase him. After a mile or so the police-car overtookhim and ordered him to stop. A policeman got out and came to Mr. Green’s car. Mr. Green had hoped that he could tell the policeman about the escaped robber, but the man had taken a gun out of his pocket and had put it to Mr. Green’s back. The policeman took out his notebook and pencil and said he wanted Mr. Green’s name and address. Mr. Green asked to be taken to the police station but the policema n said, “No, I want your name and address now. You will have to appear at the police court later.〞So, Mr. Green gave the policeman his name and address. The policeman wrote it down, put his notebook and pencil back in his pocket and gave Mr. Green a talk about dangerous driving. Then Mr. Green started up his car again and drove on. He had given up all hope of his £50,000, but just as he reached the outskirts of London, the passenger said he wanted to get out here. Mr. Green stopped the car, the man got out and said, “Thanks for the lift. You’ve been good to me. This is the least I can do in return.〞And he handed Mr. Green the policeman’s notebook. While the policeman had talked to Mr. Green, the thief had stolen the notebook.1. We celebrate the day we were born. Besides, that extra candle on the cake suggests another year of growth and maturity—or so we hope. We all lik e to imagine that we’re getting wiser and not just older. Most of us enjoy seeing the miracle of growth in others as well. For instance, seeing our children develop and learn new things makes us feel proud. For Americans, like people in most cultures, growing up is a wonderful process. But growing old? That’s a different story.Growing old is not exactly pleasant for people in youth-oriented〔以年轻人为中心的〕American culture. Most Americans like to look young, act young and feel young. As the old saying goes, “You’re as young as you feel.〞 Older people joke about how many years young they are, rather than how many years old. People in some countries value the aged as a source of experience and wisdom. But Americans seem to favor those that are young, or at least “yo ung at heart〞.Many older Americans find the “golden years〞 to be anything but golden. Economically, “senior citizens〞 often struggle just to get by. Retirement at age 65 brings a sharp decrease in personal income. Social security benefits usually cannot make up the difference. Older people may suffer from poor nutrition, medical care and housing. Some even experience age discrimination〔歧视〕.Unfortunately, the elderly population in America is increasing fast. Why? Peopleare living longer. Fewer babies are being born, and middle-aged “baby boomers〞are rapidly entering the groups of the elderly. America may soon be a place where wrinkles are “in〞. Marketing experts are already noticing this growing group of consumers.5. People feel happy when they celebrate their birthdays because_______.A. they can eat cakesB. they can become more mature and wiserC. they can receive many presentsD. they will feel younger at heart6. Why growing old is not exactly pleasant for people in America? Because______.A. young people lack experience and wisdomB. American older people often joke about their old ageC. American culture is very young-orientedD. different countries have different opinions on the old age7. The underlined sentence〔in Paragraph 3〕means“_________〞.A. the golden years can make the old earn lots of money and receive good medical careB. the old people in America lead a hard life without good nutrition, medical care or housing after they retireC. the old in America have to retire at the age of 65D. the old can get whatever they like except gold8. The underlined part in the last sentence of this passage refers to________.A. the oldB. the youngC. middle-aged peopleD. children五、书面表达某报社在中学生中开展了对当今广告的大讨论,请根据以下的提示,谈谈你对当今广告的认识以与对做好广告所采取的措施。
高二英语寒假作业 第十天-人教版高二全册英语试题

第十天一、美文晨读Something wonderful in a disasterOn May 27, 1995, our life was suddenly changed. It happened a few minutes past three, when my husband, Chris, fell from his horse as it jumped over a fence. Chris was paralyzed from the chest down, unable to breathe normally. As he was thrown from his horse, we entered into a life of convenience with lots of unexpected challenges. We went from the "haves" to the “have-nots". Or so we thought.Yet what we discovered later were all the gifts that came out of sharing difficulties. We came to learn that something wonderful could happen in a disaster. All over the world people cared for Chris so much that letters and postcards poured in every day. By the end of the third week in a medical center in Virginia, about 35,000 pieces of mail had been received and sorted. As a family, we opened letter after letter. They gave us comfort and became a source of strength for us. We used them to encourage ourselves. For weeks my mother had helped me practice my lines, but once onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Then my teacher told me she had written a narrator’s(解说者) part for the play, and asked me to change roles. Though I didn’t tell my mother what had happened that day, she sensed my unhappiness and asked if I wanted to take a walk in the yard.It was a lovely spring day. We could see dandelions(蒲公英) popping through thegrass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with bits of gold. I watched my mother carelessly bend down by one of the bunches. “I think I am going to dig up all these weeds,” she said. “Form now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”“But I like dandelions,”I protested. “All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions!”My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?”she asked thoughtfully. I nodded. “And that is true of people, too,”she added. When I realized that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry and told her the truth.“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, reminding me of how much I loved to read stories aloud to her.Over the next few weeks, with her continuous encouragement, I learned to take pride in the role. The big day finally came. A few minutes before the play, my teacher came over to me. “Your mother asked me to give this to you,” she said, handing me a dandelion. After the play, I took home the flower, laughing that I was perhaps the only person who would keep such a weed.1.The girl did not play the role of the princess mainly because ___.A. she felt nervous on the stage.B. she lost her interest in that role.C. she preferred the role of the narrator.D. she had difficulty memorizing her words.2. He knew that the time had come for him to look for shelter. Soapy’ s desires were not great. Three months in prison was what he wanted. There he was sure of a little food and a bed, safe from the winter wind and the cold. For years prison had been his shelter during the winter. Now the time had come again.Having decided to go to prison, Soapy at once set about realizing his desire. There were many ways of doing this. The pleasantest was to get a good meal at some expensive restaurant, and then, after saying that he could not pay, be quietly arrested by a policeman and sent to prison by the judge.Soapy walked along Broadway looking at the expensive goods in the fashionable shops. He stopped at the window of a brightly-lit café. Soapy was freshly shaven(刮脸), and his coat and tie were neat. But his boots and trousers were worn. “If I can reach a table in the restaurant unsuspected(不怀疑),” he thought, “everything will be all right. The upper part of me that will show above the table will cause no suspicion in the waiter’s mind. A roast duck, a bottle of wine, a cup of coffee and a cigar will make me happy on the journey to my winter quarters.” But just as Soapy entered the restaurant, the head waiter’s eye fell on his shabby trousers and boots. Strong hands turned him round and pushed him on to the sidewalk.Soapy turned off Broadway. He had to think of another way of getting into prison. At a corner of Sixth Street he saw a brightly-lit shop window. Soapy picked up a cobble-stone and dashed it through the glass. Soapy stood still with his hands in his pockets, and smiled at the sight of brass buttons(黄铜纽扣—指警察).“Where is the man who did that?” shouted the policeman.“Don’t you think I did it?” said Soapy in a friendly way.The policeman did not understand Soapy’ s hint(暗示). Men who break windows do not usually remain to speak to a policeman. They run away. Just then the policeman saw a man hurrying to catch a bus. Club(棒)in hand, he rushed after that man. Soapy had failed again. On the opposite side of the street was a small cheap restaurant. Soapy entered it, sat down at a table and ate a beefsteak and an big apple-pie.“Now call a cop, I cannot pay. I have no money,”said Soapy, “And don’t keep a gentleman waiting.”“No cop for you,” said the waiter, and seizing Soapy by the collar(领子)he threw him out of the restaurant. Soapy picked himself up and beat the dust from his clothes. Arrest seemed but a rosy dream. Prison seemed very far away. A policeman who stood before a drugstore two doors away laughed and walked down the street. He was just passing a cigar store, when he saw a well-dressed man go in, leaving his silk umbrella at the entrance. Soapy stepped in, took the umbrella, and slowly continued his way. The man saw him. He turned and followed quickly.“My umbrella!” he said seriously.“Oh, is it?”said Soapy. “Well why don’t you call a policeman? I took it. Your umbrella!” Why don’t you call a cop? There is one standing at the corner.”The owner of the umbrella slowed his steps. Soapy did the same. The policeman looked at the two curiously.“Of course, ”said the umbrella-man—“that is—well, you know how these mistakes occur—I – if it’s your umbrella I hope you’ll excuse me—I picked it up this morning in a restaurant—if you recognize it as yours, why—I hope you’ll—”The man moved back. Soapy walked on, saying bad remarks against policemen who would not arrest him.At last he reached a street where there was little traffic and few passers-by. At a quiet corner he suddenly stopped. There was an old church in front of him. Through the windows a soft light shone, and the sweet music of the Sabbath anthem(安息日颂歌)made him approach the iron fence. The moon was above, cold and beautiful, and the music reminded Soapy of those days when his life contained such things as mothers and roses and clean thoughts and collars. Soapy listened to the music, looked at the moon and said to himself: “There is time yet. I will reform(改过自新). I will become an honest man. I will get out of the mire(泥潭).” I will—”Soapy felt a hand laid on his arm. He looked quickly round into the broad face of a policeman.。

Suddenly a tall strong truck driver sat down next to him, took the man’s drink and drank it. The poor little fellow burst out crying. “Oh, come on, pal,” the trucker said. “I was just joking. Here, I’ll buy you another.”“No, that’s not it.” The man cried. “This has been the worst day of my life. I was late for work and got fired. When I left the office I found that my car had been stolen, so I walked six miles home. Then I found my wife with another man, so I picked up my wallet and came here. And just when I’m about to end it all, ” the guy said, sobbing “you show up and drink my poison.”读一读Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends. My earliest memories of my father are of a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him; as a school girl and young adult I feared him and felt bitter about him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boyfriends if t heir fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekkends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard. On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch at an outdoor cafe. We walked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son’s funny facial expressions. Gone was my father’s critical air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before? The next day my dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Alhough our times togethr became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at th at moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my fath er. And in so doing, I’m delighted with my new friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.1.Why did the author feel bitter about her father as a young adult?A. HenryMany artists live in a certain part of New York City. Most of the buildings in this part are very old, and it is easy for poor artists to find rooms that they like.Sue was a young woman who was studying art. One day in May, she met at a restaurant another young woman artist whose name was Joan. There they found that they liked the same kind of art, the same kind of food, and the same kind of clothes. So they started to live and work together. They loved each other just like two sisters. In November, pneumonia(肺炎) came to that part of the city. Many people caught it, and Joan was among them. She lay still in her bed all day, and looked from time to time through the window at the wall of the next house. One morning the doctor spoke to Sue in the hall when they were alone. He told her that Joan had a very poor chance to get well again.“She will have a chance only if she has a strong will to live,”said the doctor. “But she has decided that she isn’t going to get well.”The doctor said to Sue, “I’ll do all I can. But you will also have to do your best to give her a strong will to live. Talk to her about new winter clothes, or picnics in the woods next spring. If she gets interested in the future, her chances will be better.”The doctor left. Then Sue went into Joan’s room and began drawing a picture with pen and ink. While Sue was drawing, Joan said something in a faint voice. Sue went quickly to the side of her bed. Joan’s eyes were wide open. She was looking out of the window and was counting something.“Twelve,” said Joan. A little later she said, “Eleven, …ten, … nine, …eight, …seven.”Sue looked out. There was a wall covered with an old vine(藤) growing half way up it.“Six,” said Joan after a little while. “They are falling faster now. During the past three days almost a hundred have fallen. And now there are only six. There goes another. Only five are left now.”“Five what, dear? Tell me, Joan.”“Five leaves,” said Joan. “When the last leaf falls, I must go, too. The doctor told you that I would die soon, didn’t he?”“Don’t be silly ”said Sue. “He said that you would soon get well.”“There goes another,” said Joan. “I know the last leaf will fall before dark. I want to see it when it falls.”“Joan,” said Sue. “Shut your eyes and go to sleep. I’ll go and ask Behrman to come up and sithere as my model.”Behrman was a poor artist who was over sixty years old. He always said that some day he would paint a great masterpiece. When Sue went into his room, he was alone, drinking. She told him about Joan and the leaves on the vine.“What! ”shouted the old man. “Do people die because leaves fall from a tree? I’ve never heard such a silly thing. Just take me to her room.”Joan was sleeping when they went in. A cold rain was falling, mixed in the rain was snow. The next morning Joan wanted Sue to pull up the shade(遮光帘).There still was one yellow leaf at the end of a branch!“It’s the last leaf,” said Joan. “It will fall today, and I’ll go with it.”When night came, the rain began to fall again with a strong wind.Another morning came. Sue pulled up the shade. The lonely leaf was still there! Joan looked at it for a long time. Then she said to Sue, “I’ve been a bad girl, Sue. I’ve learned from that leaf that it’s wrong to decide to die. Now I want to get well and paint again.”The doctor came to see Joan in the afternoon. Sue followed him into the hall and asked him, “Does Joan have any chance?”“Yes, she does. She’ll get well before long if you give her good care.” Said the doctor. “And now I must see another case downstairs. His name is Berman. He’s an artist. Pneumonia, too. He’s very ill. There’s little hope for him. We’re going to take him to the hospital. ”When Sue met the doctor the next morning, he said to her, “Your friend is safe now. All she needs is food and care. You’ve done it!”In the evening Sue came to Joan’s bed.“I have something to tell you,” said Sue. “Mr. Berman died of pneumonia in the hospital today. He was ill only two days. When someone went into his room on the morning of the first day, Behrman was lying there with his shoes on. His shoes and clothes were all wet and as cold as ice. Nobody knew why.”“Oh, poor Behrman!” cried Joan.“Look out of the window at the last leaf on the wall, ”said Sue. “It looks like a real leaf, doesn’t it?”“A real leaf?”“It’s Behrman’s great masterpiece. When the last leaf fell that night, he painted it there in its place.”

Up and down the country, thousands of students stay in the library, attempting to cram( 死记硬背) the information necessary to get through finals. I am one of them — a Cambridge finalist, attempting to deal with the Oxbridge stress in the only way I know: caffeine hits and reclusion(隐遁生活). Whether you love or hate Oxbridge, the fact that these two universities provide unique learning environments is something of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, students have access to some of the best education in the world; on the other hand, the pressure that comes wi th this can prove damaging to them and can’t be swept under the carpet for they have to face it eventually. Many Cambridge students find themselves trapped in a pressure of expectation, whether this comes from their supervisors or tutors, their director of studies or even from themselves. The drive towards achievement is either the key to success or to possible serious personal issues, as Mark Phippen, head of the University of Cambridge’s Counseling Service said, “There are plenty of perfectionists in Cambridge, but it can work two ways: it can push them to accomplish and to achieve, or it can get out of hand, disabling them.”Many students say that they can’t handle it any more while working in certain libraries which are filled with other students hard at work. The competition and paranoia( 多疑) are more common than what we realize or question: you can feel as if you are being judged for how much time you spend on Facebook or YouTube, or how little time you spend reading.Too many students feel almost frustrated by the pressure to achieve but feel unable to speak about it. As everyone seems to be coping, they must also pretend to cope too. The only thing students have: tutors and supervisors regularly encourage students to avoid extracurricular activities, urging them to focus on their studies to such an extent that many find it hard to handle it. One current Cambridge tutor has been known for checking up on the activities of students involved in extracurricular theatre by searching for them on the website, which details who is involved in certain plays each term —just in case it affects the student’s work output.Problems arise when the pressure produces mental health issues. Problems have been brought to attention in articles pr imarily from Oxford’s Cherwell and Cambridge’s The Tab. The attention has made the Cambridge University Student Union set up Students Deserve Better — a campaign to handle complaints about supervisors and tutors lacking the ability to provide properspi ritual support. “When I told my supervisor about my problems with anxiety and therefore about my worries surrounding the workload she was suggesting, she said that I would probably feel less anxious once the work was done,” a finalist student called Jane said. “It shouldn’t be an accepted response in one of the world’s best universities. Their responses only worsened any feelings I had concerning my final year.”Phippen said, “At this point the exams seem like the most important thing in the world.Ho wever, two years down the line you’ll realize that the exams you did at university aren’t very important at all, as what then becomes more important is what you have done within those two years afterwards. Finalist exams can become depressing for students studying at any university. All you must remember is that you are not alone and you are good enough, and that a few years down the line, your ability to recount the plots of Euripides’ nineteen plays will no longer matter. So why worry?”1.The underlined part “be swept under the carpet” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “ ”.A.be covered upB.be dealt withC.be given upD.be figured out2.What’s Mark Phippen’s attitude towards the pressure put on the students at Oxbridge?A.Critical.B.Doubtful.C.Objective.D.Ambiguous.3.What can we know from Paragraph 4?A.Extracurricular activities fail to appeal to most students.B.Some tutors and supervisors push their students too hard.C.There is a lack of communication between students and their supervisors.D.Some students don’t speak about the pressure because they think they can handle it.4.What Jane said in Paragraph 5 suggests that she .A.didn’t get her problems across to her supervisorB.had expected better spiritual guidance from her tutorsC.was dissatisfied with her supervisor’s delayed responsesD.was glad that Students Deserve Better was set up to help students like her5.In the last paragraph, Mark Phippen aims to.A.guarantee the equality of examsB.stress the importance of examsC.ease students’ pressure from examsD.encourage students to perform better in exams6.Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?A.Oxbridge pressure: the key to students’ achievementsB.Oxbridge finals: the toughest exams in the countryC.Oxbridge graduates: the strongest competitors in the job marketD.Oxbridge success: the result of teacher-student interaction三、阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容或括号内单词的正确形式。

We could see dandelions(蒲公英) popping through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with bits of gold. I watched my mother carelessly bend down by one of the bunches. “I think I am going to dig up all these weeds,” she said. “Form now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions!”My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” she asked thoughtfully. I nodded. “And that is true of people, too,” she added. A few minutes beforethe play, my teacher came over to me. “If I can reach a table in the restaurant unsuspected (不怀疑),”he thought, “everything will be all right. Soapy stood still with his hands in his pockets, and smiled at the sight of brass buttons (黄铜纽扣—指警察).“Where is the man who did that?” shouted the policeman.“Don’t you think I did it?” said Soapy in a friendly way.The policeman did not understand Soapy’ s hint(暗示). I have no money,”said Soapy, “And don’t keep a gentleman waiting.”“No cop for you,” said the waiter, and seizing Soapy by the collar (领子) he threw him out of the restaurant. I took it. Your umbrella!”Why don’t you call a cop? There is one standing at the corner.”The owner of the umbrella slowed his steps. Soapy did the same. The policeman looked at the two curiously.“Of course, ”said the umbrella-man—“that is—well, you know how these mistakes occur—I –if it’s your umbrella I hope you’ll excuse me—I picked it up this morning in a restaurant—if you recognize it as yours, why—I hopeyou’ll—”The man moved back. He looked quickly round into the broad face of a policeman.“What are you doing here?” said the policeman.“Nothing,” said Soapy.“Then come along,”said the policeman. “Thinking of robbing the church, eh?”“Three months’imprisonment,” said the judge in the police court the next morning.演练10练一练 1--5 ACBDA 6—10ADBBD 11—15CCBDB 16—20CDAAC填一填 1.
