高一英语必修一知识点笔记unit4 Unit 4: EarthquakesIn this unit, we will explore the topic of earthquakes. We will learn about their causes, effects, and the measures taken to minimize their damage. By the end of this unit, we will have a better understanding of the science behind earthquakes and their impact on the environment.1. Introduction to EarthquakesEarthquakes are natural phenomena that occur when there is a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust. This energy, in the form of seismic waves, causes the ground to shake. Earthquakes can range in intensity from minor tremors to major destructive events.2. Causes of EarthquakesEarthquakes are primarily caused by the movement of tectonic plates. The Earth's crust is divided into several large plates that constantly shift and collide with each other. When these plates get stuck at their boundaries due to friction, stress builds up until it is released in the form of an earthquake.3. Seismic WavesDuring an earthquake, energy is released in the form of seismic waves. There are three main types of seismic waves: primary waves (P-waves), secondary waves (S-waves), and surface waves. P-waves are the fastest and can travel through both solids and liquids. S-waves are slower and can only travel through solids. Surface waves, as the name suggests, only affect the surface of the Earth.4. Measuring EarthquakesThe intensity of an earthquake can be measured using seismographs. The most commonly used scale is the Richter scale, which measures the amplitude of seismic waves. Each whole number increase on the Richter scale represents a tenfold increase in amplitude and approximately 31.6 times more energy released.5. Effects of EarthquakesEarthquakes can have devastating effects on both human-made structures and the natural environment. They can cause buildings to collapse, landslides, tsunamis, and widespread destruction. The intensity and duration of an earthquake determine the extent of damage it can cause.6. Minimizing Earthquake DamageTo minimize the damage caused by earthquakes, various measures are taken. These include strict building codes and regulations, designing structures that can withstand seismic forces, and implementing early warning systems to alert people before an earthquake hits. Public awareness campaigns and emergency preparedness also play a crucial role.7. Famous EarthquakesThroughout history, there have been many significant earthquakes that have shaped not only the physical landscape but also our understanding of these natural disasters. Some notable examples include the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.8. ConclusionEarthquakes are a powerful force of nature that cannot be prevented, but their impact can be reduced. By understanding the causes, effects, and measures to minimize their damage, we can better prepare ourselves and our communities for future earthquakes. It is essential to continue researching and developing ways to mitigate the effects of these natural disasters and ensure the safety and well-being of our planet and its inhabitants.Through studying unit 4, we will not only gain knowledge about earthquakes but also become more aware of the importance of disaster preparedness and resilience. Let us move forward with this newfound understanding and work towards creating a safer and more sustainable future for all.。

Unit 4 EarthquakeA night the earth didn’t sleepStrange things were happening in the countryside in northeast Hebei. For three days the water in the village wells rose and fell, rose and fell. Farmers noticed that the well walls had deep cracks (n. 裂缝)in them. A smelly gas came out of the cracks. In the farm-yards, the chickens and even the pigs were too nervous to(太。
而不能)eat. Mice(mouse的复数)ran out of the fields looking for places to hide. Fish jumped out of bowls and ponds. At about 3:00 am on July 28, 1976, people saw bright lights in the sky. The sound of planes could be heard outside Tangshan even when no planes were in the sky. In the city, the water pipes in some buildings cracked and burst. But the one million people of the city, who thought little of these events, went to bed as usual(像往常一样)that night. At 3:42 am everything began to shake. It seemed as if the world was at an end! Eleven kilometers directly below the city the greatest earthquakes of the 20th century had began. It was felt in Beijing, which is more than 2 hundredkilometers away. One - third of the nation felt it. A huge crack that was eight kilometers long and thirty meters wide cut across houses, roads and canals. Steam burst from holes in the ground. Hard hills of rock became rivers of dirt. In fifteen terrible seconds a large city lay in ruins. The suffering of the people was extreme. Two-thirds of them died or were injured during the earthquake. Thousands of families were killed and many children were left without parents. The number of people who were killed or seriously injured reached more than 400,000.But how could the survivors believe it was natural? Everywhere they looked nearly everything was destroyed. All of the city’s hospitals, 75% of its factories and buildings and 90% of its homes were gone. Bricks covered the ground like red autumn leaves. No wind, however, could blow them away. Two dams fell and most of the bridges also fell or were not safe for traveling. The railway tracks were now useless piece of steel. Tens of thousands of cows would never give milk again. Half a million pigs and millions of chickens were dead. Sand now filled the wells instead of(代替,取代) water. People were shocked. Then, later that afternoon, another big quake shook Tangshan. Some of the rescue workers and doctors were trapped under the ruins. More buildings fell down. Water, food, and electricity were hard to get. People began to wonder how long the disaster would last(宾语从句).All hope was not lost. Soon after the quakes, the army sent 150,000 soldiers to Tangshan to help rescue workers. Hundreds of thousands of people were helped. The army organized teams to dig out those who were trapped to bury the dead. To the north of the city, most of the 10,000 miners were rescued from the coal mines there. Workers built shelters for survivors whose homes had been destroyed. Fresh water was taken to the city by train, truck and plane.
