Recently Iwalked into the locker room of a rather well-known golf club after finishing a round. It was in the late afternoon and most of the members had left for their homes. But a half-dozen or so men past middle age were still seated at tables talking aimlessly and drinking more than was good for them. These same men can be found there day after day, and, strangely enough, each one of these men had been a man of affairs and wealth, successful in business and respected in the community. If material prosperity were the chief necessity for happiness, then each one should have been happy. Yet, it seemed to me, something very important was missing, else—there would not have been the constant effort to escape the realities of life through scotch and soda. They knew, each one of them, that their productivity had ceased (停止). When a fruit tree ceases to bear its fruit, it is dying. And it is even so with man. What is the answer to a long and happy existence in this world of ours? I think I found it long ago in a passage from the book of Genesis which caught my eye while I was looking through my Bible. The words were few, but they became memorably impressed on my mind. “In the sweat of the face shall you eat the bread.”To me, that has been a challenge from my earliest recollections (memories). In fact, the battle of life, of existence, is a challenge to everyone. The immortal words of St. Paul, too, have been and always will be a great inspiration to me. At the end of the road I want to be able to feel that I have fought a good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.8.Which of the following is indicated in the first paragraph?A. Wealth results from honest effort.B. The men seated at tables in the locker room are lost in the significance of life.C. For some people, no way can be found to escape the realities of life other than scotch and soda.D. The men acquire wealth by planting fruit trees.9. The underlined sentence “In the sweat of the face shall you eat the bread” means ________.A. Bread tastes delicious when sweat pours off your faceB. No pains, no gainsC. Failure is the mother of successD. Bread comes from the sweat on your face10. We learn from the passage that the author ________.A. was a wealthy person in the communityB. held a positive attitude towards an active lifeC. was fond of associating with celebrities (名人)D. kept a secret of the reason why he was so impressed11. What is implied in the passage by the writer?A. To use wealth properly, eat, drink and be merry.B. Where there is a will, there is a way.C. As life is but like a dream, a man is like a fruit tree.D. If you cease to struggle, you cease to live.DHaving a great collection of books at home doesn’t really mean that you are a person who loves reading. It may be got from your father or your father’s father, and it can just impress people around you with the fact that you are a person of culture. From my point of view, reading is very important in our daily life. For example, reading is a way of gaining knowledge in different areas. It can help us have a great imagination, and it makes things easier when it comes to making compositions on different themes. It gives you the possibility to speak about science, even if you don’t work in this field. You can express your opinions about a political event because you have read something about that.Secondly, reading gives us the possibility to enter the world of imagination. We can imagine what life will be like in the future. Sometimes, we compare ourselves with the people in the stories we read and they can give us some clues to solve the problems and tell us what to do in certain situations. Books are based on real life. Even if writers are considered to be somehow different from common people, they often face the same problems as we all do.In short, I would like to say that literature is the perfect way of enriching our culture, expressing correctly, having a rich vocabulary, being able to understand different fields and really being considered to be a learned person.12. In the author’s opinion, a person has many books at home only to _______.A. make his house look more beautifulB. show that his father is a learned personC. impress others with the fact that he loves readingD. show that he is rich enough to collect many books13. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the text?A. Reading a lot is good for writingB. Reading can help us gain knowledgeC. Reading can help us have a great imaginationD. Reading helps us enter the field of politics easily14. We can learn from the third paragraph that _______.A. people in stories are always unbelievableB. books may help us solve problemsC. writers are good at dealing with problems in lifeD. writers often have different experiences in life15. What can be the best title for the text?A. Why Is Reading Important in Our LifeB. How Can We Become a Learned PersonC. Different Reading, Different FunctionsD. Having a Good Collection of Books Means a Lot第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

The second factor is more interesting. Some years ago an experiment dealing with the recording of eye-movements during sleep showed that the average human's sleep cycle is with eye-movements,some slow, others rapid.⑲People woken during the periods of eye-movements generally reported that they had been dreaming. When woken at other times they reported no dreams.⑳If one group of people were disturbed from their eye-movement sleep for several nights on end,and another group were disturbed for an equal period of time but when they were no eye-movements,the first group began to show some abnormal behaviors while the others seemed unaffected. All this suggests that it was not the disturbance of sleep that mattered, but the disturbance of dreaming.。

It's too dangerous.""The front line soldiers who need help are in greater danger."Clara got donations where she could and used her own savings to buy supplies. She traveled from battle to battle with three army wagons. She also organized men to give first aid, carry water, and prepare food for the wounded. After many months of battlefield after battlefield, Clara told her friend Rachel. "I finally received official permission to bring supplies to battlefields. The wounded soldiers are so appreciative of all I do, they've named me the "Angel of the Battlefield.""That's wonderful, " said Rachel. "You certainly deserve the recognition. You're one of the bravest women I know."After the Civil War ended, Clara went to Europe to rest her body and mind. So many years of helping soldiers and their families had worn her down. While visiting Switzerland, Clara learned of the International Red Cross. Its mission to help war victims around the world aroused Clara's interest and excitement. It also sparked an idea. When she returned home, Clara worked to establish an American Red Cross. They make noises and wait for sound waves, or an echo, to bounce back off objects. They can tell the distance of various objects by how quickly the sound waves bounce back off them. If no sound bounces back, they can then fly forward.TAL#NBSP This special ability has been copied in the human world for a long time, such as in submarines and planes. But apart from helping vehicles "see" where they are, what if blind people could use echolocation for themselves? American Daniel Kish, who is blind, is known as "Batman". This isn't because he walks around in a cape(披风) and a mask, but because he has a bat-like ability to locate where he is through sharp clicks he makes by moving his tongue against the roof of his mouth. Kish is so skilled at echolocating that he can ride a bike and hike on his own.Recently, a research carried out at the University of Durham in England shed some light on the power of human echolocation. Kish, as well as other volunteers, worked with a group of scientists who studied the way blind people listen to the echoes that they produce from clicks. The team found that people were capable of hearing even very faint echoes, ones far fainter than had been previously thought.Lore Thaler, lead scientist of the group, said, "We found that in some conditions, they were really faint—about 95 percent softer than the actual clicks, but the echolocators were still able to sense this."Andrew Kolarik, another expert in echolocation, told BBC News that echolocation "can be very useful at providing information at face or chest height" and could help people "avoid objects like low hanging branches that might not get detected by the cane or a guide dog".According to BBC News, echolocation is a skill blind people can acquire and develop, just like learning a language. As Kolarik said, "Teaching echolocation skills could provide blind people with the means of exploring new places."(1) What does "this special ability" in Paragraph 2 refer to?A. The ability to make noises in the dark.B. The ability to bounce back off objects.C. The ability to measure the distance quickly.D. The ability to use sound waves to echolocate.(2) What do we know about Daniel Kish from the text?A. He is fond of riding a bike and hiking alone.B. He is able to hear echoes he produces from clicks.C. He is called "Batman" because he looks like a bat.D. He conducted the experiment to circulate echolocation.(3) What is Kolarik's attitude towards the future use of echolocation in blind people?A. Ambiguous.B. Hopeful.C. Tolerant.D. Doubtful.(4) What's the best title for the text?A. Echolocation in Human WorldB. A Very Special BatmanC. Finding A New Way to "See"D. But many of the basic technologies that employees now used to work together often encourage them to work virtually independent of one another."They wear their headphones—headphones are the new walls—to signal they are involved in high-concentration work and not available for chat, " says Stowe Boyd, a social critic whose research focuses on the future of work.Such behavior is indicative of a wider workplace trend. As office-communication technologies have become more advanced, more and more employees are avoiding direct interaction with their co-workers. Experts say this is a shift that is likely to continue. Emerging technologies even suggests a future—perhaps decades away, but maybe sooner—in which offices are populated by employees who engage in virtually no work-focused, face-to-face contact whatsoever. It isn't to say co-workers won't connect. Even as employees make the transition to "individual" work, they may begin to communicate in new ways that are as engaging as real-life interactions. Virtual reality, for example, could "hold 3-D meetings around a digital meeting table where employees are not physically in" says Martin Ford, an author who studies artificial intelligence and robots, among other things. What's the upside of a chat-free future, in which colleagues work together in close physical space but never need to talk person-to-person? For one, it may make work experiences more efficient by stopping gossipy distractions that can get in the way of serious affairs. It also may safeguard employees from physical disturbance, a growing workplace concern, says Jamais Cascio, an author and futurist. But there are possible problems. Virtual environments have the potential to reduce social inhibitions (抑制), which could lead to conflicts. It's also possible that technology will create a more impersonal atmosphere. Without the water cooler-style chat that can make work life more vibrant—research suggests informal office jokes can boost productivity—office relationships could start to resemble the interactions we have with strangers in public spaces.Eventually, some experts believe, with technologies making their way into offices, humans may remove themselves from the workplace altogether, though not in the sense that they will be replaced by robots, as many have predicted.(1) According to Stowe Boyd, what can be widely seen in workplaces?A. Technologies are used as a barrier against casual chat.B. Direct interactions are resisted but cannot be avoided.C. In-person collaboration is the best way to promote efficiency.D. Face-to-face contact is the guarantee of high-concentration work.(2) What can we infer from Paragraph 4?A. Co-workers prefer to keep closely connected.B. Employees engage in developing far-away relationships.C. Technologies allow for new forms of office-communication.D. 3-D meetings have completely replaced real-life interactions.(3) What's the author's purpose in writing the passage?A. To forecast a new workplace trend caused by technologies.B. To encourage employees to make better use of technologies.C. To stress the importance of combining work and technologies.D. To introduce the effects of technologies on how employees interact. When it comes to studying, there are some very specific ways you can improve your effectiveness without adding loads of extra work.Create a game plan. Before you begin your study session, create a game plan for exactly how you will study. Consider what you will study, how long you'll spend on each subject and what study methods you will use.1Take at least 10 minutes before your study session to map out your game plan.Outline your notes. Taking the time to boil your notes down to a standard outline can help you grasp the overall concepts you're studying. You certainly can borrow or copy someone else's notes, but you must work hard to put everything in your own words.2Many times, understanding the big picture is just as important as remembering all the individual facts. Outlining allows you to file individual facts under larger ideas.Maintain balance. Balance can be difficult to maintain in school but it's crucial forsuccess.3Seek to carry out a balanced life. Make sure to maintain a social lifeand develop hobbies outside of school. Stay in touch with your family and keep them informed of your school progress. But here are four cities around the world that make for a great cold-weather destination:Prague,Czech RepublicWith its snow-capped spires and winding streets,Pragueis a fairytale city that remains ly tourist-free in winter. The amazing architecture looks even prettier under a sheet of snow, with one of the most beautiful areas being the old town, with its Romanesque vaults. Gas street lamps have been placed throughout the city center, adding a romantic color1 to evenings. Cafes here are ideal for escaping the bitter cold.Salzburg,AustriaWith its Christmas songs and traditional markets, this is a perfect city for a winter break. “Silent Night” was performed for the first time in thechurchofOberndorfon the border ofSalzburgon Christmas Eve in 1818.The city's main market is held in the shadow ofSalzburg'sHohensalzburgCastle, but the one held inMirabell Squareis especially popular with food lovers who come to taste local food such as halusky—pieces of dumpling mixed with fried bacon.Tromso,NorwayTromso is widely regarded asNorway's most beautiful city and is a base for spoiling the northern lights. There are several attractive museums, including thePolarMuseum, which offers an insight into the history of Arctic expeditions, and theTromsoMuseum, which is famous for its Sami exhibitions.Amsterdam,NetherlandsIn winter,Amsterdam' s museums are much less crowded, making it the time to visit attractions such as Rijksmuseum or the Anne Frank House. Tromso.D.Amsterdam.BWhy isn’t science better? Look at career incentive(激励).There are oftensubstantial gaps between the idealized and actual versions of those people whose work involves providing a social good. Government officials are supposed to work for their constituents. Journalists are supposed to provide unbiased reporting and penetrating analysis. And scientists are supposed to relentlessly probe the fabric of reality with the most rigorous and skeptical of methods. All too often, however, what should be just isn’t so. In a number of scientific fields, published findings turn out not toreplicate(复制), or to have smaller effects than, what was initially claimed. Plenty of science does replicate — meaning the experiments turn out the same way when you repeat them -but the amount that doesn’t is too much for comfort. But there are also waysin which scientists increase their chances of getting it wrong. Running studies with small samples, mining data for correlations and forming hypotheses to fit an experiment’s results after the fact are just some of the ways to increase the number of false discoveries. It’s not like we don't know how to do better. Scientists who study scientific methods have known about feasible remedies for decades. Unfortunately, their advice often falls ondeaf ears. Why? Why aren't scientific methods better than they are? In a word: incentives. But perhaps not in the way you think. In the 1970s, psychologists and economists began to point out the danger in relying on quantitative measures for social decision-making. For example, when public schools are evaluated by students’ performance on standardized tests, teachers respond by teaching “to the test”. In turn, the test serves largely as of how well the school can prepare students for the test.We can see this principle—often summarized as “when a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure”—playing out in the realm of research. Science is a competitive enterprise. There are far more credentialed (授以证书的) scholars and researchers than there are university professorships or comparably prestigious research positions. Once someone acquires a research position, there is additional competition for tenure grant funding, and support and placement for graduate students. Due to this competition for resources, scientists must be evaluated and compared. How do you tell if someone is a good scientist? An oft-used metric is the number of publications one has in peer-reviewed journals, as well as the status of those journals. Metrics like these make it straightforward to compare researchers whose work may otherwise be quite different. Unfortunately, this also makes these numbers susceptible to exploitation. If scientists are motivated to publish often and in high-impact journals, we might expect them to actively try to game the system. And certainly, some do—as seen in recent high-profile cases of scientific fraud(欺诈). If malicious fraud is the prime concern, then perhaps the solution is simply heightened alertness. However, most scientists are, I believe, genuinely interested in learning about the world, and honest. The problem with incentives is that they can shape cultural norms without any intention on the part of individuals.4. Which of the following is TRUE about the general trend in scientific field?A. Scientists are persistently devoted to exploration of reality.B. The research findings fail to achieve the expected effect.C. Hypotheses are modified to highlight the experiments' results.D. The amount of science that does replicate is comforting.5. What doesdeaf earsin the fourth paragraph probably refer to?A. The public.B. The incentive initiators.C. The peer researchers.D. The high-impact journal editors.6. Which of the following does the author probably agree with?A. Good scientists excel in seeking resources and securing research positions.B. Competition for resources inspires researchers to work in a more skeptical way.C. All the credentialed scholars and researchers will not take up university professorships.D. The number of publication reveals how scientists are bitterly exploited.7. According to the author, what might be a remedy for the fundamental problem in scientific research?A. High-impact journals are encouraged to reform the incentives for publication.B. The peer-review process is supposed to scale up inspection of scientific fraud.C. Researchers are motivated to get actively involved in gaming the current system.D. Career incentives for scientists are expected to consider their personal intention.CThe secrets of dreaming are always interesting psychologists. It is generally acknowledged in the field that dreams people have during this time betweenchildhood and full adulthood, that’s around 30, are the strongestand most influential. Yet not enough is known about the repeated patterns of dreaming. Researchers are still trying to answer a basic question: How does dreaming relate to the life experiences and developmental challenges?G. William Domhoff and Adam Schneider, at theUniversityofCalifornia, help to answer this question by examining the lengthy dream series of two individuals, “Izzy” and “Jasmine”. Izzy provided a collection of 4, 329 dream reports from between the ages of 12 and 25, while Jasmine provided 664 dreams recorded between the ages of 14 and 25.Large collections of dreams like these pose challenges to researchers. Until recently, the means of studying dream series was to employ a team of recorders who take the time to code each dream for a predetermined(预先确定的)number of content categories, and then compare their results. Nowadays, digital technologies enable the analysis of language usage in dreams with high speed, accuracy, and objectivity. This marks a revolutionary advance in the science of dreaming. However, itcan only lead so far.To gain more specific and detailed insights, Domhoff and Schneider tailored word strings(词串)for each dreamer, mixing elements of traditional research with digital tools for analyzing large data sets. For Izzy these word strings included “family and s”, “celebrities” and “fantasy”, while the word strings they created for Jasmine included “familiar places,” electrical equipment” and “music”. The researchers used these word strings to identify connections between their dreams and real lives.
