2019年高考英语母题题源系列专题11 任务型阅读【母题来源一】【2019·江苏卷】请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

每个空格只填一个单词。

The Cost of ThinkingDespite their many differences, all human beings share several defining characteristics. such as large brains and the ability to walk upright on two legs. The first unique human characteristic is that humans have extraordinarily large brains compared with other animals. It seems obvious that evolution should select for larger brains. Mammals(哺乳动物)weighing sixty kilograms have an average brain size of 200 cm2. Modern man has a brain averaging 1200-1400 cm2. We are so fond of our high intelligence that we assume that when it comes to brain power, more must be better. Unfortunately, that is not the case. The fact is that a huge brain is a huge drain—consumption of energy—on the body. I's not easy to carry around, especially when boxed inside a massive skull(倾骨). It's even harder to provides energy. In modern man, the brain accounts for about 2-3%of total body weight but it consumes 25% of the body's energy when the body is at rest. By comparison, the brains of apes(类人猿)require only 8%of rest-time energy. Early humans pad for their large brains in two ways. Firstly, they spent more time in search food. Secondly, their muscles grew smaller and weaker. It's hardly an obvious conclusion that this is a good way to survive. A chimpanzee(黑猩猩) can't win an argument with a modern man, but it can tear the man apart like a rag doll.Another unique human characteristic is that we walk upright. Standing up, it's easier to find food or enemies. In addition, their arms that are unnecessary for moving around are freed for other purposes, like throwing stones or signaling. As a result, humans can perform very complex tasks with their hands.Yet walking upright has its disadvantage. The bone structure of our ancestors developed for millions of years to support a creature that walked on all fours and has a relatively small head. Adjusting to an upright position was quite a challenge, especially when the bones had to support an extra-large skull. Humankind paid for its broad vision and skillful hands backaches and painful necks. We assume that a large brain makes huge advantages. It seems obvious that these have made humankind the most powerful animal on earth. But humans enjoyed all of these advantages for a full 2 million years during which they remained weak and marginal creature. Thus humans who lived a million years agodespite their big brains and sharp stone tools, lived in constant fear of meat-eating animals.【语篇解读】本文为说明文。

Today we visited a farm. Early in the morning we met at the school gate and went there together. The farm workers gave us a warm welcome. Then the head of the farm showed us around. How glad we were to see the crops and vegetables growing well. As noon we had a picnic lunch in the sunshine. After a short rest, we had great fun singing and dancing, telling jokes or stories. Two of us even played a game of chess. The time passed quickly. Before we knew it, we had to say goodbye to the workers.

Allen had heard that wasps can become more likely to sting insummer. He mentioned this to Mrs. Carey, who had opened the door.“Oh, they don’t bother me,” she said lightly. “I go in and out all the time.”Anxiously, Allen looked at the nest again—to see the wasps flying straight at him. “Hurry!” heshouted to Mrs. Carey. “Get in!”She stepped quickly inside. Allen ran for his mini-bus. Too late; they were upon him. Our heart, with its beating pulse, is the clock-like internal rhythm of which we are most aware. There are, however, other biological timekeepers that play important roles in our lives. These innerand will fall in step with a different clocks are generally very regular, but they can also be “reset” rhythm. Even after we take a long flight across the Atlantic or Pacific, our lack of synchronization (同步) with the local time slowly disappears.Though known to biologists for over 200 years, biological clocks are the subject of a lot of research nowadays. The question is to what extent this human body rhythm is an autonomous mechanism rather than a simple response to external signals, such as changes in the level of light, the times of meals, or social interactions with our surroundings. It has not been easy to find the answer, but careful laboratory experiments have led to the conclusion that our body contains an autonomous timekeeper. Individuals who volunteered to be kept in artificial isolation with no time clues also helpedto find the answer. In 2015, a French researcher spent two months in a cold cave, 375 feet underground in the Alps. The Frenchman called his above-ground supporters by telephone whenever he ate, went to sleep, and woke, and he recorded in detail his thoughts and impressions of the passage of time. He found himself affected by definite internal time signals. His subjective impression of the timeof the day and his periods of sleep and waking, was slightly longer than 25 hours. If you give and give without making time to fill your own needs, then i t’slikely you will burn out, or feel upset. When you take and take without giving anything back, you never feel fulfilled, so you are always searching for ways to fill the void in your life. The way to create a healthy balance between giving and receiving is to know and then live by your values. I break values up into two groups which I call being and having values. Your being values are the character traits of the ideal person you would like to be. I suggest to my clients that they choose three being values that they are willing to make a commitment to live by. An example of some being values are: kind, loving, generous, inspirational, peaceful, wise and even powerful. By acting on these values, you give to others through your actions and you inspire others by being a positive role model. Mastering being these character traits becomes your life purpose.Your having values are the feelings you need to create in order to be happy. These could be companionship, achievement, and support, being valued or financial security. This is what you receive. You take responsibility for filling your own needs by taking steps to create these feelingsand conditions in your life. When you make a commitment to live by your being values, it becomes easier to make conscious choices rather than reactionary ones. If your usual pattern is to talk about your problems, you could choose to think and act like a calm person. A calm person might go for a walk, meditate ( 沉思), or set a time limit before responding. If your usual pattern is to worry, you could choose to act like a responsible or wise person. In other words, you would act like the person you choose to be—this is the key to personal power. When you choose to act on your values, you not only feel good about yourself, you reinforce(加强) your chosen beliefs. Over time acting in this way changes how you see the world, and in turnthe way other people think of you.12.The main purpose of this passage i s to .rm the readers how to be truly happyB.persuade the readers to make a commitmentC.explain to the readers what personal values areD.instruct the readers how to make wise choices13.The underlined word “void” in Paragraph 1 means .A. a state of confusionB. a break of continuitymindC. a feeling of emptinessD. an absence of one’s14.According to the text, living by your being values, you would .A. gain a lot of powerB. fill your own needsC. seek all human virtuesD. form positive personality15.What can be inferred from the text?A.Having values are better than being values.B.A calm person does not choose to complain.C.The way other people think of you decides who you are.D.A responsible person does not care about financial security.1-3 DAB 4-7 CBDD 8-11 CCAB 12-15 ACDB成都外国语学校第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

However, their lives were turned upside down when they discovered the jawbone of a Mastodon (齿乳象).Brothers Shawn and Caid Sellers and cousin Michael Mahalitc found the prehistoric bone in a piece of earth that was recently plowed (犁、耕). “I thought it was a log,” Caid said. “I tried to pick it up and it was really heavy and I saw teeth on it.” The bone weighed about 50 pounds. They eventually got the bone to their home and fitted it in their tub (浴盆), but it took their collective strength, might and a golf cart, to carry the large Mastodon bone.“They didn’t expect to find that,” Michael’s mom said. “Now that they have, I believe that they will be more aware of their surroundings and what they’re digg ing up when they are digging and playing.”“We’ve gotten a lot of petrified (石化的) wood and Civil War relics from the area and that’s what I thought it was,” the brothers’ mother said. “This is our first set of teeth we’ve found. So we thought it was their imagination. We were quite surprised to see that it was not their imagination.”They were exploring near the brothers’ home. Lo and behold (真想不到), they saw what they thought resembled a fossil. It was the curator of paleontology (古生物负责人) of the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, George Phillips, who first identified the bone as a “very mature individual.”The Mastodon was a mammal who lived during the prehistoric times. Well, there is one lady who believes that it’s actually chocolate. At 102 years of age, she’s living proof.According to Boonville, Indiana’s Eunice Modlin, a daily dose of chocolate has been the key to a long and healthy life.Specifically, two pieces of dark chocolate. It’s not just Eunice who believes this. Many scientists have attributed the sweet to health benefits such as lower chances of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. However, researchers believe that Eunice might be overlooking the fact that she has never smoked or drunk alcohol in her long life, and that chocolate might not be the significant cause of her longevity.“There are so many other factors to her long life and chocolate isn’t the only one,” nutritionist Vanessa Rissetto said.“Genes, her diet in general…ar e probably the mainreasons.”At any rate, Eunice is still alive and kicking . With four children, seven grandkids, 14 great-grandkids and 11 great-great grandkids, this lady has a big family. It must be noted that Eunice was also very athletic, being an archer in her20s .Amazingly, she has lived through tough times such as the Great Depression and World War II .Also, the healthy blood runs through the veins of other family members.Eunice’s brother is also still alive, at 101 years of age.No matter what y ou might think, Eunice’s consumption of chocolate can’t be ignored. In 2015, a BMJ study showed that a daily treat of one small bar would give the consumer 23% less chance of having a stroke (中风).What is in the sweet that makes it so beneficial? Apparently, cocoa beans have flavonoids, plant nutrients that have useful antioxidants (抗氧化剂).“Not all chocolate is created equal,” Rissetto warns .“Dark chocolate has more flavonoids than milk chocolate, and white chocolate—which does not actually contain chocolate—is not a good source of flavonoids.”8.According to the article, which of the following lead to Eunice Modlin’s long and healthy life?a.two pieces of dark chocolateb.genesc.lifelong exercised.good diete.love of her large familyA.a, b, d B.b, c, dC.a, b, e D.a, c, d9.Rissetto thinks that .A.chocolate is the most important thing that affects Eunice’s healthB.no smoking or drinking contributes the most to Eunice’s longevityC.chocolate really has nothing to do with her long and healthy lifeD.Eunice’s good diet doesn’t only mean taking chocolate every day10.What the author presented in the passage sounds .A.persuasive B.objectiveC.subjective D.critical11.From the whole passage we can conclude that______________.A.there’s universal proof for what contributes to a long lifeB.it is generally accepted that chocolate is the key to longevityC.many factors may contribute to people’s good healthD.a bit of any chocolate a day keeps the doctor awayA study, conducted by David Evans of the World Bank and Anna Popova of Stanford University, looked at 19 programs around the world in which individuals were given cash transfers from the government, either as a handout or as a “reward” for something like getting kids to school on time or taking them to the doctor for checkups.Evans and Popova looked at the impact those cash transfers had on the family budget and whether or not they led to an increase in spending on alcohol and cigarettes .What they found was that they almost alwa ys led to a reduction in a family’s alcohol and tobacco purchases. The news may surprise some people, but it’s true, and the researchers have severaltheories about why.One theory is that the cash transfer made things possible that once seemed impossible . Investing in their kids’ education or buying healthier and more expensive foods may be within reach now, but without the cash handout, these goals weren’t even a possibility. So families cut back on other expenses (like alcohol and tobacco) to make those dreams a reality.Another theory is that people just generally seem to do what they’re told.If they are given money and told to use it for their family’s welfare, in most cases, they will do just that. And that leads to the third theory: These cash transfers are usually given to women, and studies show that when women control the purse strings, more money is spent on taking care of their children.Whatever the reason for the trend, the data is clear—families that receive cash handouts don’t waste the money o n booze and cigarettes as was previously thought . Instead, they typically use that money for the benefit of their families. And that’s money well spent.12.The study proves that .A.cash transfers help poor families get what would seem unavailable otherwiseB.cash should be given to poor people as a reward for something good for kidsC.given cash handouts, poor people would spend the money on alcohol and tobacco D.poor people would save the cash given by the government for emergency needs13.A cash transfer led to a reduction in a family’s alcohol and tobacco purchases because .A.the education gained with the cash would help them drop alcohol and tobaccoB.the money previously for alcohol and tobacco would help realize their dream C.buying healthier and more expensive foods left less money for alcohol and tobacco D.that was the promise made before the cash transfer was given to the poor family14.In paragraph 5, when the author said “women control the purse strings”, he just meant “”.A.women are told what to do B.women are given the money
