Reading Comprehension (50%)Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D .You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.Passage One Animation means making things which are lifeless come alive and move.(81)From earliest times, people have always been fascinated by movement, but not until this century have we managed to capture movement ,to record it, and in the case of animation ,to reinterpret it and recreate it. To do all this, we use a movie camera and a projector. In the world of cartoon animation, nothing is impossible. You can make the characters you create do exactly what you want them.A famous early cartoon character was Felix the Cat, created by Pat Sullivan in America in the early nineteen twenties. Felix was a marvelous cat. He could do all sorts of things no natural cat could do like taking off his tail, using it as a handle and then putting it back. Most of the great early animators lived and worked in America, the home of the moving picture industry. The famous Walt Disney cartoon characters came to life after 1928. Popeye the Sailorman and his girl friend Olive Oyl were born at the Max Fleischer studios in 1933.But to be an animator, you don’t have to be a professional. It is possible for anyone to make a simple animated film without using a camera at all. All you have to do is draw directly on to blank film and then run the film through a projector.41. What does the passage mainly discuss?A. Animal world.B. Movie camera.C. Cartoon making.D. Movement.42. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. People were unable to cause the movement to last or record it in the last century.配置可保敷设过设备进卷调控正常行继,需中资料B. Pat Sullivan was a famous early cartoon character.C. It is impossible to make cartoon characters do what they are designed to do.D. In ancient times people were surprised by movement.43. According to the passage, Felix the Cat ________.A. was created by the American cartoonist Felix B. was designed by Pat Sullivan in the early twentieth century C. was unable to do what natural cats could not do D. was created in the United States in the nineteenth century 44. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.A. Walt Disney’s cartoon characters were born earlier than Pat Sullivan’s B. only professionals can create cartoon characters C. Popeye the Sailorman and Olive Oyo were famous cartoonists D. the cartoon industry started in the United States 45. Which of the following statements best describes the author’s attitude towards cartoon making?A. Cartoon making is an easy job. Anyone can do it.B. Only trained people can be employed in cartoon making industry.C. Anyone can make cartoons under the instructions of professionals.D. Cartoon making is no easy job. You have to spend much time drawing onto empty film.Passage TwoTelevision was not invented by any one person. Nor did it spring into being overnight. It evolved gradually, over a long period, from the ideas of many people — each one building on the work of their predecessors. The process began in 1873, when it was accidentally discovered that the electrical resistance of the element selenium (硒)varied in proportion to the intensity of the light shining on it.(82)Scientists quickly recognized that this provided a way of transforming light variations into electrical signals. Almost immediately a number of schemes were proposed for sending pictures by wire (it was, of course ,before radio). One of the earliest of these schemes was patterned on the human eye. Suggested by G. R. Carey in 1875, it envisioned a mosaic of selenium cells on which the picture to be transmitted would be focused by a lens system. At the receiving end there would be a similarly arranged mosaic made up of electric lights. Each selenium cell would be connected by an individual wire to the similarly placed light in the receiving mosaic. Light falling on the selenium cell would reproduce the original picture. Had the necessary amplifiers (放大器、扩音器)and the right kind of lights been available, this system would have worked. But it also would have required an impractical number of connecting wires. Carey recognized this and proposed to “scan” the cells — transmitting the signal from each cell to its associated light, in turn, over a single wire. If this were done fast enough, the retentive power of the eye would cause the resultant (合成的)image to be seen as a complete picture.46. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. Television in the Electronic EraB. First Steps in the Invention of TelevisionC. The Art of TelevisionD. Harmful Effects of Television Viewing47. In Paragraph 1,the word “being” could best be replaced by ________.设过资料卷弯扁正常工工作;,审资料障高某些异A. placeB. creatureC. subsistenceD. existence 48. An important discovery in early television was the electrical resistance of ________.A. mosaics B. the human eye C. lenses D. the element selenium 49. In 1875, Carey suggested that the human eye envisioned a mosaic of selenium cells on which the picture to be transmitted would be focused by ________.A. wire B. electric lights C. a lens system D. amplifiers 50. Following are the reasons why the first scheme for television was abandoned EXCEPT ________.A. he lacks an effective assistant B. the necessary amplifiers were unavailable C. the proper lights were unavailable D. the number of connecting wires is impracticalPassage ThreeThe greatest recent social changes have been in the lives of women. During the twentieth century there was a remarkable shortening of the proportion of a woman’s life spent in caring for children. A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old.(83)By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, opportunity and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five years and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children, her work is lightened by household appliances and convenience foods .This important change in women's life pattern has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity, and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age, and though women tend to marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Very many more afterwards return to full-time or part-time work.(84)Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money, and running the home, according to the abilities and interests of each of them.51. For women at the beginning of the twentieth century, the amount of time spent taking care of children ________.A. was shorter than in previous centuriesB. was longer than in previous centuriesC. was considered to be surprisingly longD. account for a great part of their lives52. According to the passage, around the year 1900 most women married ________.A. at about twenty-fiveB. in their early fiftiesC. as soon as possible after they were fifteenD. at any age from fifteen to forty-five 课件中理利:在及安装试验试卷相高中资并且指导力保因此调试技确灵活53. When she was over fifty, the late nineteenth-century mother ________.A. would be healthy enough to take up paid employmentB. was usually expected to die fairly soonC. would expect to work until she diedD. was unlikely to find a job even if she wanted one54. One reason why the woman of today may take a job is that she ________.A. is younger when her children are old enough to look after themselvesB. does not like children herselfC. need not worry about food for her childrenD. can retire from family responsibilities when she reaches sixty55. According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to ________.A. stay at home after leaving schoolB. marry men younger than themselvesC. start working again later in lifeD. marry while still at schoolPassage FourIcebergs are among nature’s most spectacular creations, and yet most people have never seen one. A vague air of mystery envelops them. They come into being—somewhere—in faraway, frigid waters, amid thunderous noise and splashing turbulence, which in most cases no one hears or sees. They exist only a short time and then slowly waste away just as unnoticed.Objects of sheerest beauty, they have been called. Appearing in an endless variety of shapes, they may be dazzlingly white, or they may be glassy blue, green, or purple, tinted faintly or in darker hues. They are graceful, stately, inspiring in calm, sunlit seas. But they are also called frightening and dangerous, and they are in the night, in the fog, and in storms. Even in clear weather one is wise to stay at a safe distance away from them. Most of their bulk is hidden below the visible top. Also, they may roll over unexpectedly, churning the waters around them.Icebergs are parts of glaciers that break off, drift into the water, float about a while, and finally melt. Icebergs afloat today are made of snowflakes that have fallen over long ages of time. They embody snows that drifted down hundreds, or many thousands, or in some cases maybe a million years ago. The snows fell in polar regions and on cold mountains, where they melted only a little or not at all, and so collected to great depths over the years and centuries. As each year’s snow accumulation lay on the surface, evaporation and melting caused the snowflakes slowly fell on the top of the old, it too turned to icy grains. So blankets of snow and ice grains mounted layer upon layer and were of such great thickness that the weight of the upper layers compressed the lower ones. (85) With time and pressure from above, the many small ice grains joined and changed to larger crystals, and eventually the deeper crystals merged into a solid mass of ice.56. The author states that icebergs are rarely seen because they are ________.A. broken by waves soon after they are foundB. hidden beneath the mountainsC. located in remote regions of the worldD. enveloped in mystery57. The word “dazzlingly” (Para. 2) probably means ________.A. brilliantlyB. faintlyC. beautifullyD. sickly 58. According to the passage, icebergs are dangerous because they ________.A. usually melt quickly B. can turn over suddenly C. may create immense snowdrifts D. can cause unexpected avalanches 59. The expression “from above” (Para. 5)refers to ________.A. sunlit seas B. polar regions C. weight of mountains D. layers of ice and snow 60. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. The Nature and Origin of Icebergs B. The Size and Shape of Icebergs C. The Danger of Icebergs D. The Melting of IcebergsIII. Cloze Test (20分)Directions: There are 20 blanks in the following passage. For each blank there are four choices marked A, B, C and D below the passage. A.孔子B.

Reading Comprehension (50%)124Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is125followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them126there are four choices marked A, B, C and D .You should decide on the127best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet witha single line through the centre.128129Passage One130Animation means making things which are lifeless come alive andmove.131132(81)From earliest times, people have always been fascinated by 133movement, but not until this century have we managed to capture movement,134to record it, and in the case of animation,to reinterpret it and recreate 135it. To do all this, we use a movie camera and a projector.136In the world of cartoon animation, nothing is impossible. You can make the characters you create do exactly what you want them.137138A famous early cartoon character was Felix the Cat, created by Pat139Sullivan in America in the early nineteen twenties. Felix was amarvelous cat. He could do all sorts of things no natural cat could do 140141like taking off his tail, using it as a handle and then putting it back. Most of the great early animators lived and worked in America, the 142143home of the moving picture industry. The famous Walt Disney cartoon144characters came to life after 1928. Popeye the Sailorman and his girl145friend Olive Oyl were born at the Max Fleischer studios in 1933.146But to be an animator, you don’t have to be a professional. It is147possible for anyone to make a simple animated film without using a cameraat all. All you have to do is draw directly on to blank film and then 148149run the film through a projector.15041. What does the passage mainly discuss?A. Animal world.B. Movie camera.C. Cartoon 151152making. D. Movement.15342. Which of the following statements is TRUE?154A. People were unable to cause the movement to last or record it155in the last century.156B. Pat Sullivan was a famous early cartoon character.157C. It is impossible to make cartoon characters do what they are158designed to do.159D. In ancient times people were surprised by movement.16043. According to the passage, Felix the Cat ________.A. was created by the American cartoonist Felix161162B. was designed by Pat Sullivan in the early twentieth centuryC. was unable to do what natural cats could not do163164D. was created in the United States in the nineteenth century 16544. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.A. Walt Disney’s cartoon characters were born earlier than Pat 166167Sullivan’s168B. only professionals can create cartoon characters169C. Popeye the Sailorman and Olive Oyo were famous cartoonists 170D. the cartoon industry started in the United States17145. Which of the following statements best describes the 172author’s attitude towards cartoon making?173A. Cartoon making is an easy job. Anyone can do it.174B. Only trained people can be employed in cartoon making industry. 175C. Anyone can make cartoons under the instructions of 176professionals.177D. Cartoon making is no easy job. You have to spend much timedrawing onto empty film.178179180Passage Two181Television was not invented by any one person. Nor did it spring 182into being overnight. It evolved gradually, over a long period, from theideas of many people —each one building on the work of their predecessors. 183184The process began in 1873, when it was accidentally discovered that the185electrical resistance of the element selenium(硒)varied in proportion186to the intensity of the light shining on it.(82)Scientists quickly187recognized that this provided a way of transforming light variations into188electrical signals. Almost immediately a number of schemes were proposedfor sending pictures by wire(it was, of course, before radio).189190One of the earliest of these schemes was patterned on the human eye.191Suggested by G. R. Carey in 1875, it envisioned a mosaic of selenium cellson which the picture to be transmitted would be focused by a lens system. 192193At the receiving end there would be a similarly arranged mosaic made up194of electric lights. Each selenium cell would be connected by an individual195wire to the similarly placed light in the receiving mosaic. Light falling196on the selenium cell would reproduce the original picture. Had the197necessary amplifiers(放大器、扩音器)and the right kind of lights beenavailable, this system would have worked. But it also would have required 198199an impractical number of connecting wires. Carey recognized this and200proposed to “scan”the cells —transmitting the signal from each cell201to its associated light, in turn, over a single wire. If this were done202fast enough, the retentive power of the eye would cause the resultant203(合成的)image to be seen as a complete picture.20446. Harmful Effects of Television Viewing20947. In Paragraph 1,the word “being” could best be replaced by________.210211A. placeB. creatureC. subsistenceD. existence21248. An important discovery in early television was the electrical 213resistance of ________.214A. mosaicsB. the human eyeC. lensesD. the element selenium 21549. In 1875, Carey suggested that the human eye envisioned a mosaic 216of selenium cells on which the picture to be transmitted would be 217focused by ________.218A. wireB. electric lightsC. a lens systemD. amplifiers 21950. Following are the reasons why the first scheme for television 220was abandoned EXCEPT ________.221A. he lacks an effective assistantB. the necessary amplifiers were unavailable222223C. the proper lights were unavailable224D. the number of connecting wires is impractical225226Passage ThreeThe greatest recent social changes have been in the lives of women. 227228During the twentieth century there was a remarkable shortening of the229proportion of a woman’s life spent in caring for children. A womanmarrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have been 230231in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children,232of whom four or five lived till they were five years old.(83)By the233time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early234fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which235custom, opportunity and health made it unusual for her to get paid work.236Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s237youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five years and is likely238to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care239of children, her work is lightened by household appliances and240convenience foods.241This important change in women's life pattern has only recently begun242to have its full effect on women’s economic position. Even a few years243ago most girls left school at the first opportunity, and most of them244took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left workat once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, 245246many girls stay at school after that age, and though women tend to marryyounger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before 247248their first child is born. Very many more afterwards return to full-time249or part-time work.(84)Such changes have led to a new relationship in250marriage, with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and251satisfactions of family life and with both husband and wife sharing more252equally in providing the money, and running the home, according to theabilities and interests of each of them.25325451. For women at the beginning of the twentieth century, the amount 255of time spent taking care of children ________.A. was shorter than in previous centuries256257B. was longer than in previous centuries258C. was considered to be surprisingly long259D. account for a great part of their lives26052. According to the passage, around the year 1900 most women married 261________.A. at about twenty-five262263B. in their early fifties264C. as soon as possible after they were fifteenD. at any age from fifteen to forty-five26526653. When she was over fifty, the late nineteenth-century mother 267________.268A. would be healthy enough to take up paid employment269B. was usually expected to die fairly soon270C. would expect to work until she diedD. was unlikely to find a job even if she wanted one27127254. One reason why the woman of today may take a job is that she 273________.A. is younger when her children are old enough to look after 274275themselvesB. does not like children herself276277C. need not worry about food for her children278D. can retire from family responsibilities when she reaches sixty55. According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to 279280________.281A. stay at home after leaving school282B. marry men younger than themselves283C. start working again later in life284D. marry while still at school285286Passage Four287Icebergs ar e among nature’s most spectacular creations, and yet most288people have never seen one. A vague air of mystery envelops them. Theycome into being—somewhere—in faraway, frigid waters, amid thunderous 289290noise and splashing turbulence, which in most cases no one hears or sees.291They exist only a short time and then slowly waste away just as unnoticed. 292Objects of sheerest beauty, they have been called. Appearing in an293endless variety of shapes, they may be dazzlingly white, or they may be294glassy blue, green, or purple, tinted faintly or in darker hues. Theyare graceful, stately, inspiring in calm, sunlit seas.295296But they are also called frightening and dangerous, and they are in297the night, in the fog, and in storms. Even in clear weather one is wiseto stay at a safe distance away from them. Most of their bulk is hidden 298299below the visible top. Also, they may roll over unexpectedly, churning300the waters around them.301Icebergs are parts of glaciers that break off, drift into the water, 302float about a while, and finally melt. Icebergs afloat today are made 303of snowflakes that have fallen over long ages of time. They embody snows 304that drifted down hundreds, or many thousands, or in some cases maybe 305a million years ago. The snows fell in polar regions and on cold mountains, 306where they melted only a little or not at all, and so collected to great 307depths over the years and centuries. As each year’s snow accumulation lay on the surface, evaporation 308309and melting caused the snowflakes slowly fell on the top of the old, it 310too turned to icy grains. So blankets of snow and ice grains mounted layer 311upon layer and were of such great thickness that the weight of the upper 312layers compressed the lower ones. (85) With time and pressure from above, 313the many small ice grains joined and changed to larger crystals, and eventually the deeper crystals merged into a solid mass of ice.31431556. The author states that icebergs are rarely seen because they are 316________.A. broken by waves soon after they are found317318B. hidden beneath the mountains319C. located in remote regions of the worldD. enveloped in mystery32032157. The word “dazzlingly” (Para. 2) probably means ________.A. brilliantlyB. faintlyC. beautifullyD. sickly32232358. According to the passage, icebergs are dangerous because they-324________.A. usually melt quickly325326B. can turn over suddenly327C. may create immense snowdrifts328D. can cause unexpected avalanches32959. The expression “from above” (Para. 5)refers to ________. 330A. sunlit seasB. polar regionsC. weight of mountainsD. 331layers of ice and snow33260.
