2004年6月大学英语四级试题 2阅读理解 及注释 (1)

2004年6月大学英语四级阅读理解2004年6月大学英语四级阅读理解第1篇Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:A is for always getting to work on time.B is for being extremely busy.C is for the conscientious (勤勤恳恳) way you do your job.Y ou may be all these things at the office, and more. But when it comes to getting ahead, experts say, the ABCs of business should include a P, for politics, as in office politics.Dale Carnegie suggested as much more than 50 years ago: Hard work alone doesn‘t ensure career advancement. Y ou have to be able to sell yourself and your ideas, both publicly and behind the scenes. Y et, despite the obvious rewards of engaging in office politics – a better job, a raise, praise – many people are still unable or unwilling to ―play the game.‖―Peopl e assume that office politics involves some manipulative(攻于心计的) behavior,‖ says Deborah Comer, an assistant professor of management at Hofstra University. ―But politics derives from the word ‗polite‘. It can mean lobbying and forming associations. It can mean being kind and helpful, or even trying to please your superior, and then expecting something in return.‖In fact, today, experts define office politics as proper behavior used to pursue one‘s own self-interest in the workplace. In many cases, this involves some form of socializing within the office environment – not just in large companies, but in small workplaces as well.―The first thing people are usually judged on is their ability to perform well on a consistent basis,‖ says Neil P. Lewis, a manage ment psychologist. ―But if two or three candidates are up for a promotion, each of whom has reasonably similar ability, a manager is going to promote the person he or she likes best. It‘s simple human nature.‖Y et, psychologists say, many employees and emp loyers have trouble with the concept of politics in the office. Some people, they say, have an idealistic vision of work and what it takes to succeed. Still others associate politics with flattery (奉承),fearful that, if they speak up for themselves, they may appear to be flattering their boss for favors.Expert suggest altering this negative picture by recognizing the need for some self-promotion.11. ―Office politics‖ (Line 2, Para 4) is used in the passage to refer to ____.A) the code of behavior for company staffB) the political views and beliefs of office workersC) the interpersonal relationships within a companyD) the various qualities required for a successful career12. To get promoted, one must not only be competent but ____.A) give his boss a good impressionB) honest and loyal to his companyC) get along well with his colleaguesD) avoid being too outstanding13. Why are many people unwilling to ―play the game‖ (Line 4, Para. 5)?A) They believe that doing so is impractical.B) They feel that such behavior is unprincipled.C) They are not good at manipulating colleagues.D) They think the effort will get then nowhere.14. The author considers office politics to be ____.A) unwelcome at the workplaceB) bad for interpersonal relationshipsC) indispensable to the development of company cultureD) an important factor for personal advancement15. It is the author‘s view that ____.A) speaking up for oneself is part of human natureB) self-promotion does not necessarily mean flatteryC) hard work contributes very little to one‘s promotionD) many employees fail to recognize the need of flattery2004年6月大学英语四级阅读理解第1篇【参考译文】A总是按时工作。

The commonly used coins are: one cent (penny ), five cents (nickel), 10 cents(dime), and25 cents (quarter). 50 pieces (half dollar) and silver dollars (not really silver anymore) are gaining in usage, while there has been talk of phasing out the penny that's inflation for you. “Always carry plenty of quarters when travelling. Very useful for phones, soda machines, laundry machines, etc.”There is generally no problem in using US dollars in Canada, but this is never possible in reverse. It's useful always to carry small change for things like exact fare buses, but do not carry large sums of cash. Instead keep the bulk of your money in travellers' cheques which can be purchased both in the US and abroad and should be in dollar denominations. The best known cheques are those of American Express, so you will have the least difficulty cashing these, even in out of the way places. Thomas Cook travellers' cheques are also acceptable, especially as lost ones can be reclaimed at some car rental companies. Dollar denomination cheques can be used like regular money. There's no need to cash them at a bank: use them instead to pay for meals, supermarket purchases or whatever. Ten or twenty dollar cheques are accepted like this almost always and you' 11 be given change just as though you'd presented the cashier with dollar bills. Be prepared to show I.D. when you cash your cheques.Credit cards can be even more valuable than travellers' cheques, as they are often used to guarantee room reservations over the phone and are accepted in lieu of deposit when renting a car--indeed without a credit card you may be considered so untrustworthy that not only a deposit but your passport will be held as security too. The major credit cards are VISA, Master Charge and Access, Diners Club and American Express. If you hold a bank card, it could well be worthwhile to increase your credit limit for travel purposes--you should ask your bank manager.(1). (阅读理解题)Passage TwoOur environment is getting worse and worse with the increase of the world population, which affects the environment in two ways. Firstly, the limited energy resources will be used up much faster. Secondly, the increasing population creates more pollution, another severe problem thatneeds to be solved. Both problems are long-term ones because actions taken now show their results slowly over many years. They are also urgent because delays in action can lead to great suffering and social problems. The question seems to be difficult to handle for most people. However, a person can be a protector of environment in everyday life if he takes actions to save the environment right now. With the development of technology, cars make transportation easier and quicker than before, but we can't ignore the disadvantages brought to us by more and more cars in use. For example, we are consuming gasoline (汽油), which is a non-renewable (无法更新的) resource, and will soon be gone. Moreover, the exhausted gas from cars pollutes our air,and our health is therefore threatened by air pollution, which has a big potential effect on our daily life. So we can consider walking, taking buses, carpooling (合用汽车), instead of driving cars alone. This seems to be a very slow process that can't be so effective if it’s taken by a single person. But when more and more people become aware of the importance and positively take it as their personal responsibilities, the condition of the air will be improved to a great extent.(1). ⼤学英语2复习题(⾼起本)《⼤学英语》复习题(⾼起本)Part I Reading ComprehensionSection ADirections: There are 3 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C), and D). You should decide onthe best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through thecenter.Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage.Trials are taking place in North America and Europe to test an electronic device which will prevent children from watching unsuitable programs on television. The device, known as a V-chip (the “v” stands for violence), allows parents to control their television set so that programs which are unsuitable for children cannot be watched on a particular television. The V-chip works by using an electronic code. When a program is broadcast, the signal from the television transmitter carries a code, which indicates the level of sex and/or violence in a particular program. The V-chip inside the television then examines the code for each program and blocks transmission of those programs which contain certain codes.Makers of the V-chip say that parents can be confident that their children will not be able to watch those programs which they decide are unsuitable.V-chip technology has attracted a lot of interest. President Clinton passed a law last year which will require all new televisions to be fitted with V-chips by 1998. And the European Parliament(欧洲议会)has included the V-chip in its new Directive on Broadcasting. But critics say that the system will not be fool-proof, and that children will find ways of getting around it. There are also concerns that foreign satellite television companies may not abide by the rules. Others say that if viewers come to rely on the V-chip, other controls on program content may start to be relaxed.1. According to the passage, V-chip technology enables parents to _____________.A) turn off the television when they are not homeB) test electronic devices that can take the place of the TV setC) keep inappropriate TV programs away from their childrenD) control the amount of time that their children spend on watching TV2. What do we learn from the passage about the electronic code?A) It shows the level of sex and/or violence in a particular program.B) It contains information about the television transmitter.C) It is the signal that is sent out by the V-chip.D) It is a computer program built in a TV set to examine the V-chip.3. The word “they ” in Paragraph 4 refers to ________________.A) makers B) parents C) children D) programs4. We can conclude from the passage that ________________________.A) President Clinton attracted a lot of interestB) a law had been passed to prohibit sex and violence on TVC) TV sets sold in American after 1998 are required to have V-chipsD) the European Parliament decided to import the V-chip technology from USA5. Critics of the V-chip were concerned that ____________________.A) children may not like the new technologyB) imported TV set may not have been equipped with V-chipsC) children may get addicted to the new technologyD) new problems may arise even if the V-chip worksQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage. It is estimated that some seven hundred million people are unable to read and write, and there are probably two hundred and fifty million more whose level of attainment is so slight that it barely qualifies literacy (读写能⼒).Recently the attack on illiteracy has been stepped up. A world plan has been drawn up by a committee of UNESCO experts in Paris, as part of the UNESCO Nations Development Decade, and an international conference on the subject has also been held. UNESCO stresses that functional literacy is the aim. People must learn the basic skills of responsible citizenship: the ability to read notices, newspapers, timetables, letters, price-lists, to keep simple records and accounts, to sort out the significance of the information gathered, and to fill in forms. The major areas of illiteracy are in Asia, Africa, and Central and South America. In Africa there are at least one hundred million illiterates, comprising eighty to eighty-five per cent of the total population. In Europe the figure is about twenty-four million, most of them in Southern Europe, with Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Yugoslavia heading the list (the United Kingdom has about seven hundred thousand).6. Studying carefully the clues in the passage, we learn that the total population of Africa is .A) approximately seven hundred millionB) approximately one hundred and twenty-five millionC) approximately eight or eight point five thousand millionD) exactly twenty-four million7. The figure of illiteracy in Britain comprises .A) zero point one per cent of that of illiteracy in the worldB) zero point two per cent of the world adult populationC) thirty-five per cent of Europe’s populationD) three point five per cent of that of the illiteracy in Southern Europe8. It is obvious that UNESCO .A) is a company in FranceB) is a world organization attached to the U. N.C) works mainly at combating illiteracyD) has many experts whose level of attainment is far from literacy9. A world plan mentioned in the passage aims at .A) training responsible citizensB) enforcing the functions of UNESCOC) helping illiterates learn how to read and writeD) urging Southern European countries to take the lead in attacking illiteracy10. The author implies that this world plan is to .A) be carried out in the major areas of illiteracy like AfricaB) be realized in ten yearsC) be drawn up by Parisian expertsD) be debated at an international conferenceQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. In the course of the late 1930s thousands of workers transformed an old garbage dump in the New York borough of Queens into the 1939-40 New York World’s Fair. For the price of a five-cent subway ride and seventy-five-cent admission fee, some fifty-seven attendees could sample personally “the wonders of contemporary life.”Since the middle of the nineteenth century, industrial states had held periodic expositions to showcase the goods produced by their nationals and by others. Although London’s Great Exhibition of 1851 had led the way, it was the French who were to produce such international displays of culture and machinery most frequently during the next half-century. American expositions tied the French example to the celebration of key historical anniversaries. The best-remembered example is the Chicago Exposition of 1893, which marked the four hundredth anniversary of Columbus’s arrival—one year late. The New York World’s Fair of 1939 was inspired by the 150th anniversary of the inauguration (就职典礼) of George Washington. What took place at these showcases of modern architecture, national pride, and international commercial competition? The 1893 Chicago Fair boasted its entertainment “Midway” as well as sc ientific exhibits, and visitors to the New York Fair in 1939 may well have been more impressed by the simulated (模拟的) 250-foot parachute jump than by the first speech by a president to be shown on television, or the first color film for home movie cameras.11. How much did a ticket to the 1939-40 New York Fair cost?A) 5 cents. B) 57 cents. C) 75 cents. D) 80 cents.12. The word “showcase” in paragraph 2 probably means _______.A) be put in a case B) display C) purchase D) be bought13. Which nation organized most of the international exhibitions between 1850 and 1900?A) Great Britain. B) France. C) England. D) The United States.14. We can conclude from the passage that the four hundredth anniversary of Columbus’s arrival should have been celebrated in _______________.A) 1892 B) 1893 C) 1894 D) 189515. What was one important feature of the 1893 Chicago Exposition?A) Presidential speech. B) Historical conference.C) Athletic competition. D) Entertainment and scientific displays.Section BDirections:In this section there is a short passage with five questions or incomplete statements. Read the passage carefully. Be sure to write your answers on Answer Sheet (2).Teen smoking rates have been dropping since 1997, federal health officials report today, but more than a quarter of high school students still smoke cigarettes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says roughly 29% of American high school students are smokers, down from 36% in 1997. The finding confirms other studies that show a decline in smoking in this age group. The trend is occurring across all race and age groups and in both boys and girls, says Terry Pechacek of the CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. If trends continue, the report says, the national goal to reduce teen smoking rates to 16% or lower by 2010 is achievable.Pechacek attributes the decline to a 70% jump in the price of cigarettes from the end of 1997 to May 2001, along with expanded school, state and national smoking-prevention efforts. By 2000, the report says, 92% of the USA's school districts required tobacco-prevention education, and nearly half of middle and senior high schools had no-smoking policies. To keep teen smoking rates on a downward path, Pechacek says, cigarette prices should continue to rise and smoking-prevention campaigns should expand. “We’ve got it going in the right direction,” he says, “but we can’t be sati sfied with what we have got. If we’re going to continue to decline, we’ve got to continue those efforts.”The data being released today are part of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a national school-based survey of 14,601 students in grades 9-12 that was conducted in spring 2001.SAQ 1. (阅读理解题)Many visitors finds the fast pace at which American people move very troubling. One’s first impression is likely to be that everyone is in a rush. City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going and are very impatient if they are delayed even for a brief moment. At first, this may seem unfriendly to you. Drivers will rush you; storekeepers will be in a hurry as they serve you; people will push past you as they walk along the street. You will miss smiles, brief conversations with people as you shop or dine away from home. Do not think that because Americans are in such a hurry they are unfriendly. Often, life is much slower outside the big cities, as is true in other countries as well. Americans who live in cities such as New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles, often think that everyone is equally in a hurry to get things done; they expect others to “push back”, just as city people do in Tokyo, Singapore or Paris, for example. But when they discover that you are a stranger, most Americans become quite kindly and will take great care to help you. Many of them first came to the city as strangers and they remember how frightening a new city can be .If you need help orwant to ask a question, choose a friendly looking person and say, “I am a stranger here. Can you help me?”Most people will stop, smile at you, and help you find you way or answer your questions. But you must let them know that you need help. Otherwise they are likely to pass you by, not noticing that you are new to the city and in need of help. Occasionally, you may find someone too busy or perhaps too rushed to give you aid. If this happens, do not be discouraged; just ask someone else. Most Americans enjoy helping a stranger.(1). (阅读理解题)Many people think that when they become rich and successful, happiness will naturally follow. Let me tell you that nothing is further from the truth. The world is full of very richpeople who are as miserable as if they were living in hell. We have read stories about movie stars who committed suicide or died from drugs. Quite clearly, money is not the only answer to all problems. Wealth obtained through dishonest means does not bring happiness. Lottery winnings do not bring happiness. Gambling winnings do not bring happiness. To my mind, the secret to happiness lies in your successful work, in your contribution towards others’ happiness and in your wealth you have earned through your own honest effort. If you obtain wealth through luck or dishonest means, you will know that it is ill-earned money. If you get your money by taking advantage of others or by hurting others, you will not be happy with it. You will think you are a base person. Long-term happiness is based on honesty, productive work, contribution, and self-esteem. Happiness is not an end; it is a process. It is a continuous process of honest, productive work which makes a real contribution to others and makes you feel you are a useful, worthy person. As Dr. Wayne wrote, “There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way.” There is no use saying “Someday when I achieve these goals, when I get a car, build a house and own my own business, then I will be really happy.” Life just does not work that way. If you wait for certain things to happen and depend on external circumstances of life tomake you happy, you will always feel unfulfilled. There will always be something missing.(1). 2012年12月全国大学英语四级等级考试试题及答案(详解) 2

2012年12月全国大学英语四级等级考试试题及答案(详解)Part II Reading Comprehension (skimming and scanning)(15 minutes)Directions: In this part, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on Answer Sheet 1. For questions 1-7, choose the best answer from the four choicesmarked A), B), C) and D). For questions 8-10, complete the sentences with the informationgiven in the passage.Time Off from Work Gains in ImportanceAmerican workers are saying they need a break. As their number of hours clocked on the job has crept higher, more time off has become a bigger priority. In the past few years, human resources experts say time off has consistently placed among the top three employee concerns, along with compensation and staffing levels, whereas it used to be farther down the list. In a poll taken online in November 2004, 39% of workers said if given the choice, they would choose time off over the equivalent in additional base salary. Of course, most of the 4,600 respondents are still opting for the bigger paycheck, but the desire for time off is up almost 20% from just three years ago when conducted a similar poll. The reasons for this shift are many and varied. Some have to do with the way a new generation is thinking about work, while others are driven by how companies are responding to recent economic pressures.A New GenerationThe results may in part represent the needs of a new breed of workers. The average American is working one month (160 hours) more each year than a generation ago. According to recruiting and human capital management expert John Sumser, younger workers work for meaning first and money second. He goes on to warn employers that these are the people who are the foundation for the next workforce and they may not buy the existing paradigm (范例). A study released in late 2004 by the New York-based Families and Work Institute concludes that the new brand of young workers is rejecting the work-centric style of their parents’ generation. The study, which examines changes in the workforce over the past 25 years, found that younger workers are more likely to be “family-centric” or “dual-centric” (with equal priorities on both career and family) rather than “work-c entric” when compared to members of the Boomer Generation.September 11th and the End of the Roaring NinetiesThe impact of the terrorist attacks of September 11th cut across all age groups of the workforce. We collectively entered a new era, reevaluatin g life’s priorities and making changes in our attitude toward time spent at work versus hobbies and family. “I started looking at things completely differently. I’ve been far less willing to put in the 14-hour days necessary to get noticed and climb the co rporate ladder,” said Tony Jackson, a 43-year-old employee of a New York City-based financial services company. “Frankly, I can’t see that changing.”Even before September 11th, some experts say the slow shift in worker attitudes was already underway due to the end of the roaring 1990’s, when hours were long and significant personal wealth was created. For those who fared well financially, some opted for careers of contract work where they could call more of the shots pertaining to (与……有关的) time off, or new occupations with greater personal rewards. For others, even if their bank accounts were not spilling over from America’s economic heyday (全盛时期), their own energy had been depleted due to unrelenting (毫不松懈的) years of work hours and high stress. They were ready for something less taxing.Families and Work Institute President and co-founder Ellen Galinsky agrees. She says the poll numbers show evidence of an increase in need for time off and a shift in thinking due to the fact that workers have been pushed to their limit in recent years. “This new generation of workers is at the edge of how long they can work. It just feels like too much. They are not slackers (懒虫); they just don’t want more,” says Galinsky.Monetary Needs Less Intense Due to Dual Income Households“We’ve decided we prefer to have more time to ourselves,” says Carol Kornhaber, a New England software programmer in her late twenties. Kornhaber and her husband are both working but have sought out jobs where they are not pressed to put in long hours. Instead, they have insisted upon eight-hour days and having enough vacation time to travel, a major interest they share. Financial pressures are eased by both of them working and keeping a careful watch on their expenses. “We are lucky in a lot of ways to have found bosses who understand our needs.”BurnoutTrying to squeeze more productivity out of workers may be nothing new, but it has become particularly acute in recent years. This has been due in large measure to recession-induced layoffs and other trends such as the rising cost of healthcare benefits. After a layoff, workers who remain behind are often asked to pick up most or even all the load of the people who were let go, requiring more and more hours at the office. As new corporate initiatives are planned, the inverse is also true. As Sumser observes, “the additional workload, which runs across the economy from the office worker to the manufacturing line, seems to be a function of the cost of benefits. The regulations make it cheaper to add workload for existing employees than to hire new players.” The Families and Work Institute reports that nearly one third of U.S. employees often or very often feel overworked or overwhelmed by how much work theyhave to do. Nearly three out of four report that they frequently dream about doing something different from their current job.Show Me the MoneyOverworked or not, the majority in the poll still chose to fatten their paycheck if given the choice. For many, it was a practical matter. Says Peggy Jones, an accountant in a Boston area business services company, “I already get three weeks a year that I can’t use up because I’m so busy. I’d definitely go for the extra money to pay some bills or make a big purchase I’ve been holding off on.” For Jones, the realities of running a household and saving up for college for her children simply need to take precedence over extra free time.Companies Are Already RespondingTo many human resources experts it is inevitable that, given the growing health of the economy and the upcoming population-driven labor shortages as the Boomer Generation moves into retirement, the pendulum of control in the employee-employer relationship will swing back to the employee side. That is expected to begin in just a few years. According to human resources expert, Larry Schumer, at , “since most companies succeed based on a motivated and capable workforce, they have offered and will continue to offer more paid flexibility, whether it be through tried and tested time-off programs or the next great idea.” Where will that new balance of employer versus employee needs lie? Time, or perhaps time off, surely will tell.1. Which of the following has been rising in importance in the past few years?A) Compensation. B) Time off. C) Right to vote. D) Staffing levels.2. MPs (国会议员) warned that many young people would need “expensive” remedial lessons in later life to get a job — posing major problems for the economy. The findings came just months after Ofsted(教育标准办公室)claimed almost half of math lessons in English schools were not good enough. It said many teachers relied on textbooks and mundane exercises to make sure pupils passed exams at the expense of a proper understanding of the subject. MPs backed the conclusions, saying too many pupils found lesso ns “boring”. They insisted improvements had been made under Labor but achievement had “leveled off” in recent years. In 2008, 79 percent of pupils met the Government’s expected standard at the end of primary school, well short of the 85 percent target set for 2006. Around five percent moved to secondary school with the math skills of a seven- year-old, said the committee. In 2006, £2.3 billion was spent teaching the subject. It equates to around a quarter of the £10 billion total budget for primary teaching and support staff. The report said the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) needed to “radically rethink its strategy for improving pupil attainment; otherwise we seriously doubt that the department will meet its 2011 target”. The targ et demands that 84.5 percent of pupils will make the necessary progress between 7 and 11.Last year, the DCSF published a major review of math education in England to boost standards. It called for a math specialist in every primary school within 10 years and more emphasis on mathematical “play” in nursery schools. Mr. Leigh said, “The department’s 10-year program to train 13,000 specialist math teachers will not benefit some primary schools for another decade. That’s far too long; the department needs to look for ways to accelerate the program.” Sarah McCarthy Fry, the Schools Minister, said, “We have already accepted the main recommendation from a recent independent review of primary math that every school should have a specialist math teacher and have pledged £24 million over the next three years for a training program for teachers.”Nick Gibb, the Tory shadow schools secretary, said, “The Government is not getting value for the money they have piled into education and the country is falling behind in international league tables as a result. The Government has failed to replace methods of teaching which have failed with tried and tested methods used in countries that have much higher levels of math achievement.”57. Private organizations and government agencies, including the World Bank, have made preserving 25 such ecological arks a top priority for financing and protective legislation. But a growing chorus of scientists is warning that directing conservation funds to hot spots may be a recipe for major losses in the future. Of species that live on land, nearly half of all plants and more than a third of all animals are found only in the hot spots. But they do not include many rare species and major animal groups that live in less biologically rich regions (“cold spots”). And the hot-spot concept does not factor in the importance of some ecosystems to human beings, the scientists argue. This debate has been simmering quietly among biologists for years; however, it is coming to a boil now with the publication of an article in the current iss ue of American Scientist arguing that “calls to direct conservation funding to the world’s biodiversity hot spots may be bad investment advice.” “The hot-spot concept has grown so popular in recent years within the larger conservation community that it now risks eclipsing all other approaches,” write the authors of the paper. “The officers and directors of all too many foundations, non-governmental organizations and international agencies have been seduced by the simplicity of the hot spot idea,” they go on. “We worry that the initially appealing idea of getting the most species per unit area is, in fact, a thoroughly misleading strategy.”But hot spots have their ardent defenders, notably Dr. Norman Myers and Dr. Russell Mittermeier. Dr. Myers says hot spots have been successful at attracting attention and financing for conservation intropical countries. “And that has been good,” he said. “No one is suggesting that one invest solely in hot spots, but if you want to avoid extinctions, you have to invest in them.”62. The best title for this passage would be ________.A) A Debate on Preserving Hot Spots B) An Introduction to Hot SpotsC) Hot Spots vs. Cold Spots D) How to Finance Hot Spots63. Hot spots occupy a small percentage of the eart h’s land surface with _____________.A) a third of all plantsB) many major animal groups living in cold spotsC) rich biological diversityD) many rare species living in cold spots64. Critics of hot spots hold the opinion that ________.A) hot spots are always as important as cold spotsB) it is unwise to invest largely in hot spotsC) governments should choose the best time to invest in hot spotsD) the hot-spot approach is a misleading strategy from the very beginning65. According to Dr. Norman Myers, _________.A) protecting and investing in hot spots can save species from extinctionB) conservation efforts should not center on hot spotsC) governments should invest most in cold spotsD) the hot-spot approach now is not as good as it was in the past66. The symptoms of the common cold include a sore throat, runny nose, stuffed-up nose, and tiredness. Colds are caused by viruses, but scientists cannot explain the exact cause. There is no cure. Many people, however, believe that they know the causes of and cures for the common cold. For example, they believe that it is possible to get a cold if we get chilled, if we get extra tired, or if we are too close to a person with a cold. In other words, if we want to prevent catching cold, we should stay warm and dry; we should avoid getting too tired and we should not be in close contact with people who have colds.Meanwhile, there are probably hundreds of “cures” throughout the world for the common cold. For example, the following suggestions are popular in quite a number of societies: (1) drink plenty of water; (2) get extra rest; (3) take a lot of vitamin; (4) take aspirin; (5) keep warm. Each year people spend a lot of money on cold medicines—pills, liquids, lozenges. But these medicines do not cure colds; they can only relieve cold symptoms. In other words, they make us feel better.21.
