Choose the best answer and mark your answer on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneUnder the right circumstances, choosing to spend time alone can be a huge psychological blessing. In the 1980s, the Italian journalist and author Tiziano Terzani. after many years of reporting across Asia, holed himself up in a cabin in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. "For a month I had no one to talk to except my dog Baoli," he wrote in his book A Fortune Teller Told Me. Terzani passed the time with books, observing nature, "listening to the winds in the trees, watching butterflies, enjoying silence" For the first time in a long while he felt free from the unending anxieties of daily life:"At last I had time to have time."Terzani’s embrace of isolation was relatively unusual: Humans have long considered solitude an inconvenience, something to avoid, a punishment, a realm of loners. Science has often associated it with negative outcomes. Freud, who linked solitude with anxiety, noted that, "in children the first fears relating to situatio ns are those of darkness and solitude." John Cacioppo, a modern social neuro-scientist who has extensively studied loneliness—what he calls “chronic perceived isolation”—contends that, beyond damaging our thinking powers, isolation can even harm our physical health. But increasingly scientists are approaching solitude as something that, when pursued by choice, can prove a therapy. This is especially true in times of personal disorder, when the instinct is often for people to reach outside of themselves for support.“When people are experiencing crisis it's not always just about you: It's about how you are in society," explains Jack Fong, a sociologist at California State Polytechnic University who has studied solitude. In other words, when people remove themselves from the social context of their lives, they are better able to see how they're shaped by that context. Thomas Merton, a monk and writer who spent years alone, held a similar notion. "We cannot see things in perspective until we cease to hug them to our breast,” he writes in Thoughts in Solitude. "people can go for a walk or listen to music and feel that they are deeply in touch with themselves.”21. Tiziano Terzani spent a month alone to______.A.embrace isolationB. study butterfliesC. write a bookD. look after his dog22.The word "solitude", (Para. 2) is closest in meaning to "_____".A.growing anxiousB. feeling emptyC. being helplessD. staying alone23.The opinions of Freud and Cacioppo are cited to show that _____.A.children tend to fear darkness and solitudeB. solitude pursued by choice can be a therapyC. chronic isolation can harm interpersonal relationsD. solitude has long been linked with negative outcomes24.According to Jack Fong, the sense of personal crisis may be influenced by ____.A. an isolated lifestyleB. mental disorderC. low self-esteemD. social context25.The main idea of the passage is that .A.solitude should be avoided at all costsB. anxieties of daily life may cause personal crisisC.choosing to spend time alone can be a blessingD. seeking support is useless for tackling personal crisisPassage TwoScience is finally beginning to embrace animals who were, for a long time, considered second-class citizens. As Annie Potts of Canterbury University has noted, chickens distinguish among one hundred chicken faces and recognize familiar individuals even after months of separation. When given problems to solve, they reason: hens trained to pick colored buttons sometimes choose to give up an immediate (lesser) food reward for a slightly later (and better) one. Healthy hens may aid friends, and mourn when those friends die.Pigs respond meaningfully to human symbols. When a research team led by Candace Croney at Penn State University carried wooden blocks marked with X and O symbols around pigs, only the O carriers offered food to the animals. The pigs soon ignored the X carriers in favor of the 0's. Then the team switched from real-life objects to T-shirts printed with X or O symbols Still, the pigs ventured only toward the 0-shirtcd people: they had transferred their knowledge to a two-dimensional format, a not-inconsiderable feat of reasoning.Fairly soon, I came to see that along with our closest living relatives, cetaceans (鲸目动物) too are masters of cultural learning, and elephants expressprofound joy and mourning with their social companions. Long-term studies in the wild on these mammals helped to fuel a perspective shift in our society: the public no longer so easily accepts monkeys made to undergo painful procedures in laboratories, elephants forced to perform in circuses, and dolphins kept in small tanks at theme parks.Over time, though, as I began to broaden out even further and explore the inner lives of fish, chicken, pigs, goats, cows, and octopus, I started to wonder: Will the new science of "food animals" bring an ethical revolution in terms of who we eat? In other words, will the breadth of our ethics start to catch up with the breadth of our science?Animal activists are already there, of course, committed to not eating these animals. But what about the rest of us? Can paying attention to the thinking and feeling of these animals lead us to make changes in who we eat?26. According to Annie Potts, hens' choice of a later and better reward indicates their ability of _____ .A. social interactionB. facial recognitionC. logical reasoningD. mutual learning27.The expression "not-inconsiderable feat'' (Para. 3) shows what pigs can do is _____ .A. extraordinaryB. weirdC. uniqueD. understandable28.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?A. The similarities between mammals and humans.B. The necessity of long-term studies on mammals.C. A change of public attitude to the treatment of mammals.D.A new discovery of how mammals think and feel.29.What is the author's view on eating "food animals''?A.He regrets eating them before.B.He considers eating them justifiable.C. He is not concerned about the issueD.He calls for a change in what we eat.30.What is the best title for the passage?A.In Praise of Food AnimalsB. Food Animals in Science ReportsC. The Inner Lives of Food AnimalsD.Food Animals: Past, Present and FuturePassage ThreeAlmost eight decades ago, the American educator Abraham Flexner published an article entitled The Usefulness of Useless Knowledge. In it, he argued that the most powerful intellectual and technological breakthroughs usually emerged from research that initially appeared "useless", without much relevance to real life.As a result, it was vital, Flexner said, that these “useless” efforts should be supported, even if they did not produce an immediate payback, because otherwise the next wave of innovation simply would not occur. "Curiosity, which may or may not produce something useful, is probably the outstanding characteristic of modern thinking,” he declared. In 1929. Flexner persuaded a wealthy American family, the Bambergers, to use some of their donations to fund the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) at Princeton to support exactly this kind of"undirected" research. And it paid off: brilliant Jewish scientists fleeing from Nazi Germany, such as Albert Einstein, gathered at the IAS to explore undirected ideas. And while some of these, such as Einstein's own work developing his earlier theory of relativity, did not initially seem valuable, many eventually produced powerful applications (though after many decades)."Without Einstein's theory, our GPS tracking devices would be inaccurate by about seven miles," writes Robbert Dijkgraaf, the current director of the IAS, in the foreword to a newly released reprint of Flexner's article. Concepts such as quantummechanics (量子力学)or superconductivity also seemed fairly useless at first—butyielded huge dividends at a later date. The reason why the IAS is re-releasing Flexner's article now is that scientists such as Dijkgraaf fear this core principle is increasingly under threat. The Trump administration has released a projected budget that threatens to reduce funding for arts, science and educational groups. Many Republicans believe that research is better financed by business or philanthropists (慈善家) than by government. But one striking fact about the past century is how much American innovation originated infederal projects; Silicon Valley would never have boomed were it not for the fact that state funding enabled the development of the World Wide Web, for example.31.What may be the best title for the passage?A.The Value of Creative IdeasB.The Importance of Basic ResearchC. Innovation in Silicon ValleyD. In Praise of “Useless” Endeavors32.According to Abraham Flexner, what is an important feature of modem thinking?A. Curiosity.B.Application.C. Devotion.D. Passion.33.The "undirected" research (Para. 3) refers to research _____ .A.not funded by government agenciesB.without any practical purpose in mindC.with indefinite experimental methodsD.supported by non-profit organizations34.Examples of initially "useless" research include all of the following EXCEPT___ .A. quantum mechanicsB.theory of relativityC.superconductivityD.GPS tracking devices35.Flexner's article was reprinted because _____ .A.businesses in Silicon Valley wish to put pressure on the governmentB.Democrats believe that government funding should go to small businessesC.Republicans argue that scientific research should be financed by businessesD.some scientists worry that government will cut its funding for basic research Passage FourIn 1902, Georges Melies made and released a movie called A TVip to the Moon. In this movie, the spaceship was a small capsule, shaped like a bullet, that was loaded into a giant cannon and aimed at the moon. This movie was based on a book that came out many years earlier by an author named Jules Verne. One of the fans of the book was a Russian man, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. The book made him think. Could one really shoot people out of a cannon and have them get safely to the moon? He decided one couldn't, but it got him thinking of other ways one could get people to the moon. He spent his life considering this problem and came up with many solutions. Some of Tsiolkovsky’s solutions gave scientists in America a nd Russia ideas when they began to think about space travel. They also thought about airplanes they and other people had made, and even big bombs that could fly themselves very long distances. Many scientists spent years working together to solve the problem. They drew and discussed different designs until they agreed on the ones that were the best. Then, they built small models of those designs, and tested and tested them until they felt ready to build even bigger models. They made full-scale rockets, which they launched without any people inside, to test for safety. Often the rockets weren't safe, and they exploded right there on the launch pad, or shot off in crazy directions like a balloon that you blow up and release without tying it first After many, many tests, they started to send small animals into space. Only after a long time did they ever put a person inside a rocketand shoot him into space.Even after they began sending people into space, scientists were still trying to improve the shape of the rockets. The design changed many times, and eventually ended up looking like a half-rocket and half-airplane. The machine called space shuttle was used for many years. Now, the government lets private companies try their own designs for spaceships, and they have come up with many different, crazy-looking machines.36.In the movie A Trip to the Moon, the spaceship was sent to the moon _____ .A.in a capsuleB. in a bulletC. by a cannonD. by a gun37.The movie was based on a book written by _____ .A.Konstantin TsiolkovskyB. an unknown authorC. Georges MeliesD. Jules Verne38.Before the invention of a spaceship, possible solutions of space travel included all of the following EXCEPT _____ .A. bombsB. balloonsC. airplanesD. rockets39.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?A. It took a long time and hard work to send a person into space.B.American scientists worked better than Russian scientists.C.Scientists from Russia and America had close cooperation.D.The design of the rocket was inspired by the movie A Trip to the Moon.40.The word "shoot" (Para. 4) is closest in meaning to "_____".A. send with great forceB. break into many piecesC. fix a problemD. attack with a weaponSection BDirections: In this section, you are required to rend one quoted blog and the comments on it. The blog and comments are followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers A t B, C and D. Choose the best answer and mark your answer on the Answer Sheet. In 2003,1 was told by a restaurant owner on a Thai island that local fishermen used to wrap their lunch in banana leaves, which they would then casually toss overboard when done. That was OK, because the leaves decayed and the fish ate them all. But in the past decade, he said, plastic wrap had rapidly replaced banana leaves, so the beach was edged with a crust of plastic. This is a worldwide problem一we can’t point the finger at Thai fishermen. TheUK alone produces more than 170m tons of waste every year, much of it food packaging. Now we live in an absurd age where a packet of cookies can have seven layers of wrapping. While it has revolutionised the way we store and consumefood, there is now so much of it that landfills(垃圾填埋场) can’t cope. Some of it ispoisonous, and some of it never degrades. It can take 450 years for some types of plastic bottle to break down. Indeed, as Rachell e Strauss of the UK’s Zero WasteWeek says, we never actually throw anything “away”一it's really just put somewhere else.I t’s easy to despair at the scale of handling the plastic wrap, but it isn't beyond humanity to solve it—look at how the world took action on CFCs (含氯氟烃) : thereare signs that the hole in the ozone layer is now closing. Food packaging ought to be a doddle.Comment 1:While as an individual I can do my best to avoid excessive packaging, it is really only government regulation that can force corporations to change their practices.Comment 2:I never understand why supermarket chains insist on covering products such as bananas and cucumbers in plastic wrap. Why? They have their own packaging--the skin or peel!Comment 3:I love packaging—if it's well designed of course. It helps us be more hygienic and practical. The solution to these packaging necessities is clearly to encourage the use of bio-degradable packaging.Comment 4:Before, everything we threw out was bio-degradable and now it's not. Guess it's hard to change that behavior overnight.41.What is the author's view on the plastic problem in Thailand?A. The problem is not unique to Thailand.B. There is no point overreacting to the problem.C.It is important to raise people's awareness.D. Now, a study says it can also spread. A friend of a lonely person was 52% more likely to develop feelings of loneliness. And a friend of that friend was 25% more likely to do the same.Earlier findings showed that happiness, fatness and the ability to stop smoking can also grow like infections within social groups. The findings all come from a major health study in the American town of Framingham, Massachusetts. The study began in 1948 to investigate the causes of heart disease. Since then, more tests have been added, including measures of loneliness and depression. The new findings involved more than 5,000 people in the second generation of the Framingham Heart Study. The researchers examined friendship histories and reports of loneliness. The results established a pattern that spread as people reported fewer close friends. For example, loneliness can affect relationships between next-door neighbors. The loneliness spreads as neighbors who were close friends now spend less time together. The study also found that loneliness spreads more easily among women than men.英语试卷一A 第7 页共17 页Researchers from the University of Chicago, Harvard and the University of California, San Diego, did the study. The findings appeared last month in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. The average person is said to experience feelings of loneliness about 48 days a year. The study found that having a lonely friend can add about 17 days. But every additional friend can decrease loneliness by about 5%, or two and a half days.Lonely people become less and less trusting of others. This makes it more and more difficult for them to make friends—and more likely that society will reject them.John Cacioppo at the University of Chicago led the study. He says it is important to recognize and deal with loneliness. He s ays people who have been pushed to the edges of society should receive help to repair their social networks. The aim should be to aggressively create what he calls a “protective barrier” against loneliness. This barrier, he says, can keep the whole network from coming apart.31.Besides loneliness, which of the following can also spread among people?A.Friendship. B.Happiness.C.Depression. He listed reasons why he thinks digital textbooks make sense.California approves traditional textbooks in six-year cycles. Digital ones can offer the latest information. They lighten the load of school bags. They save paper and trees, and make learning more fun and interactive. And above all, he said, they help schools with their finances. The state has had to make severe cuts in school spending because of deep financial problems. More than six million students a ttend California public schools.Earlier this year, California invited content developers to offer digital math and science materials for high schools. These had to meet at least 90% of the state‟s learning requirements. Specially trained teachers examined 16 t extbooks and approved ten of them.Six of the ten were published by the CK12 Foundation, a nonprofit group that had been developing digital science and math boo ks for about two years. The foundation paid teachers and other education professionals to write and edit them. The money came from a group financed by the Khosla Family.California cannot require schools to use the digital textbooks. Individual school districts will have to decide for themselve s.Susan Martimo, a California Department of Education official, says she does not expect widespread use right away. Her best guess is that some schools with a lot of technology will be the first to use them, but only in addition to their traditional books.英语试卷一A 第9 页共17 页School administrators point out that the texts may be free online, but students need a way to access them. Not everyone has a computer or electronic reader. Schools could print out copies, but that would not help the environment. So, what should we do? Exercise more? Eat less? Or both? The government feels it has to take responsibility for this expanding problem. The cheerful Mr Pickwick, the hero of the novel by Charles Dickens, is seen in illustrat ions as someone who is plump(胖乎乎的)—and happy. In 18th century paintings beauty is equated with rounded bodies and soft curves. But nowadays being overweight is seen as indicating neither a cheerful character nor beauty but an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. So what do you do? Diet? Not according to England‟s chief medical officer, Sir Liam Donaldson. He says that physical activity is the key for reducing the risks of obesity, cancer and heart disease. And the Health Secretary John Reid even said that being inac tive is as serious a risk factor in heart disease as smoking. So, having bought some cross trainers, how much exercise should you do? According to Sir Liam Donaldson, at least 30 minutes of moderate activity five days a week. Is going to the gym the answer? Luckily fo r those who find treadmills(跑步机)tedious, the Health Development Agency believes that physical activity that fits into people‟s lives may be more effective. They suggest t aking the stairs rather than the lift, walking up escalators, playing active games with your children, dancing or gardening. And according to a sports psychologist, Professor Biddle, gyms …are not making the nation fit‟, and may even cause harm. There‟s new scientific evidence that too much exercise may actually be bad for you. Scientists a t the University of Ulster have found that unaccustomed exercise releases dangerous free radicals that can adversely affect normal function in unfit people. The on ly people who should push their bodies to that level of exercise on a regular basis are train ed athletes. So, should we forget about gyms and follow some experts‟ advice to increase exercise in our daily life? After all, getting of f the bus a stop early and walking the rest of the way can‟t do any harm! One final thought. How come past generations lacked gym facilities but were leaner and fitter than people today?43.This passage is mainly about .A.how to keep fit and avoid fatnessB.increased risks for overweight people C.the dangers of exercise in the gymD.the benefit of a balanced diet英语试卷一A 第11 页共17 页44.What does “this expanding problem” (Para. 1) refer to?A.The slow growing up of overweight children. D.He is the image of being plump and happy.46.According to Sir Liam Donaldson, what is the best way to avoid obesity?A.Being on diet.B.Giving up smoking.C.Being as inactive as possible.D.Doing physical activities.47.Which of the following is NOT recommended by the Health Development Agency?A.Walking up escalators, dancing or gardening.B.Going to the gym to walk on treadmills.C.Taking the stairs rather than the lift.D.Playing active games with your children.48.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that .A.too much exercise may actually be bad for health B.experts‟ advice cannot be always followedC.past generations longed for gym facilities we have today D.moderate daily-life exercise can make us leaner and fitterPassage FourA metaphor is a poetic device that deals with comparison. It compares similar qualities of two dissimilar objects. With a simple metaphor, one object becomes the other: Love is a rose. Although this does not sound like a particularly rich image, a metaphor can communicate so much about a particular image that poets use them more than any other type of figurative language. The reason for this is that poets compose英语试卷一A 第12 页共17 页their poetry to express what they are experiencing emotionally at that moment. Consequently, what the poet imagines love to b e may or may not be our perception of love. Therefore, the poet‟s job is to enable us to experience it, to feel it the same way as the poet does. Let‟s analyze this remarkably unsophisticated metaphor concerning love and the rose to see what it offers. Because the poet u ses a comparison with a rose, first we must examine the characteristics of that flower. A rose is spectacular in its beauty, its petals (花瓣)are nicely soft, and its smell is pleasing. It‟s possible to say that a rose is actually a feast to the senses of sight, touc h, and smell. The rose‟s appearance seems to border on perfection, each petal seemingly symmetrical in form. Isn‟t this the way one‟s love should be?A loved one should be a delight to one‟s senses and seem perfect. However, there is another dimension added to the comparison by using a rose. Roses have thorns. The poet wants to convey the idea that roses can be tricky. So can love, the metaphor tells us. When one reaches out with absolute trust to touch the object of his or her affection, ouch, a thorn can cause great harm! “Be care ful,” the metaphor warns: Love is a feast to the senses, but it can overwhelm us, and it can also hurt us and cause acutesuffering. This is the poet‟s perception of love—an admonition(劝诫). What is the point?Just this: It took almost 14 sentences to clarify what a simple metaphor communicates in only four words! That is the artistry and the joy of the simple metaphor.49.According to the passage, what is a metaphor?A.A comparison between two different objects with similar features. B.A contrast between two different things to create a vivid image.C.A description of two similar objects in a poetic way.D.A literary device specially employed in poetry writing.50.The main idea of this passage is that .A.rose is a good image in poetryB.love is sweet and pleasingC.metaphor is ambiguousD.metaphor is a great poetic device51.It can be inferred from the passage that a metaphor is .A.difficult to understand B.rich in meaningC.not precise enough D.like a flower英语试卷一A 第13 页共17 页52.As is meant by the author, thorns of a rose .A.protect the rose from harmB.symbolize reduced loveC.add a new element to the image of love D.represent objects of one‟s affection53.The meaning of the love-is-a-rose metaphor is that .A.love is a true joyB.true love comes once in a lifetimeC.love does not last longD.love is both good and bad experiences54.According to the passage, poetry is intended to .A.release anger B.entertain the readersC.express poets‟ ideas D.reward the sensesPassage FiveSome 23 million additional U.S. residents are expected to become more regular users of the U.S. health care system in the next several years, thanks to the passage of health care reform. Digitizing medical data has been promoted as one way to help the already burdened system manage the surge in patients. But putting people‟s health information in databases and online is going to do more than simply reduce redundancies. It is already shifting the very way we seek and receive health care.“The social dynamics of care are changing,” says John Gomez, vice president of Ec lipsys, a medical information technology company. 2017年同等学力《英语》真题答案解析
1. 【答案】 A【解析】上一句的“can you make it?”询问的是“明天的聚会你能来吗?”,再结合下一句的“at 10 o’clock.”,说明Kevin首先关心的是时间合不合适,所以选择A “when is it taking place?”(什么时候?)2. 【答案】C【解析】上一句“Frank is also going to make some suggestions on improving the bottom line”陈述的是“Frank也会去参加这个会议,对改善底线提出一些建议”这样一件事情,下文“he’s got keen insights”(他有敏锐的洞察力)这句话,是对Frank的一种评价,表达一种赞赏的语气,选择C “That’ll be interesting”符合整个语境。
“that”指代的是“Frank也会去参加这个会议并给出建议”这件事。
3.【答案】B【解析】根据后文“No”这个否定回答,表明上一句应该是一个“是否问句”,再根据“he’s flying to....and won’t be able to make it.”可知,该句问的内容应该是与人有关,选择B “Alan 会参加吗?”符合题意。
4.【答案】C【解析】根据Roger询问的“how’s your new apartment working out?”以及Ann的回答“that’s what I am calling out ”可知,整个对话是围绕“新公寓”的问题展开的,根据下一句“what’s the problem with your new place now”可以推测出Ann 对这个新公寓不是很满意,所以选择C “I’ve decided to look for a new place”表示她想重新找一个新公寓。
5.【答案】B【解析】“I thought you liked the apartment”(我以为你喜欢这个公寓呢)紧接在“what’s the problem with your new place now”(新的住处有什么问题吗?)这个问句后,起补充说明的作用,表示出乎意料。

Terzani passed the time with books, observing nature, "listening to ihe winds in the trees, watching butterflies, enjoying silence" Forthe first time in a long while he felt free from the unending anxieties of daily life:"At last I had time to have time."Terzani’s embrace of isolation was relatively unusual: Humans have long considered solitude an inconvenience, something to avoid, a punishment, a realm of loners. Science has often associated it with negative outcomes. Freud, who linked solitude with anxiety, noted that, "in children the first fears relating to situatious are those of darkness and solitude." John Cacioppo, a modern social neuro-scientist who has extensively studied loneliness—what he calls “chronic perceived isolation”—contends that, beyond damaging our thinking powers, isolation can even harm our physical health. "We cannot see things in perspective until we cease to hug them to our breast,” he writ es in Thoughtsin Solitude. "people can go for a walk or listen to music and feel that they are deeply in touch with themselves.”21. Tiziano Terzani spent a month alone to______.A.embrace isolationB. study butterfliesC. write a bookD. look after his dog22.The word "solitude", (Para. 2) is closest in meaning to "_____".A.growing anxiousB. feeling emptyC. being helplessD. staying alone23.The opinions of Freud and Cacioppo are cited to show that _____.A.children tend to fear darkness and solitudeB. solitude pursued by choice can be a therapyC. chronic isolation can harm interpersonal relationsD. solitude has long been linked with negative outcomes24.According to Jack Fong, the sense of personal crisis may be influencedby _____.A. an isolated lifestyleB. mental disorderC. low seif-esteemD. social context25.The main idea of the passage is that .A.solitude should be avoided at all costsB. anxieties of daily life may cause personal crisisC.choosing to spend time alone can be a blessingD. seeking support is useless for tackling personal crisisPassage TwoScience is finally beginning to embrace animals who were, for a long time, considered second-class citizens. Then the team switched from real-life objects to T-shirts printed with X or O symbols Still, the pigs ventured only toward the 0-shirtcd people: they had transferred thrir knowledge to a two-dimensional format, a not-inconsiderable feat of reasoning.Fairly soon, I came to see that along with our closest living relatives, cetaceans (鲸目动物)too are masters of cultural learning, and elephants express profound joy andmourning with their social companions. Long-term studies in the wild on these mammals helped to fuel a perspective shift in our society: the public no longer so easily accepts monkeys made to undergo painful procedures in laboratories, elephants forced to perfonn in circuses, and dolphins kept in small tanks at theme parks.Over time, though, as I began to broaden out even further and explore the inner lives of fish, chicken, pigs, goats, ami cows, I started to wonder: Will the new science of "food animals" bring an ethical revolution in terms of who we eat? In other words, will the breadth of our ethics start to catch up with the breadth of our science? Animal activists are already there, of course, committed to not eating these animals. 3) shows what pigs can do is_____ .A. extraordinaryB. weirdC. uniqueD. understandable28.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?A. The similarities between mammals and humans.B. The necessity of long-term studies on mammals.C. A change of public attitude to the treatment of mammals.D.A new discovery of how mammals think and feel.29.What is the author's view on eating "food animals''?A.He regrets eating them before.B. He considers eating them justifiable.C. In it, he argued that ihe most powerful intellectual and technological breakthroughs usually emerged from research that initially appeared "useIess", without much relevance to real life.As a result, it was vital, Flexner said, that these “useless” efforts should be supported, even if they did not produce an immediate payback, because otherwise the next wave of innovation simply would not occur. "Curiosity, which may or may not produce something useful, is probably the outstanding characteristic of modern thinking,” he declared. In 1929. Flexner persuaded a wealthy American family, the Bambergers, to use some of their donations to fund the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) at Princeton to support exactly this kind of t "undirected" research. And it paid off: brilliant Jewish scientists fleeing from Nazi Germany, such as Albert Einstein, gathered at the IAS to explore undirected ideas. And while some of these, such as Einstein's own work developing his earlier theory of relativity, did notinitially seem valuable, many eventually produced powerful applications (though after many decades)."Without Einstein's theory, our GPS tracking devices would be inaccurate by about seven miles," writes Robbert Dijkgraaf, the current director of the IAS, in the foreword to a newly released reprint of Flexner's article. Many Republicans believe that research is better financed by business or phiianthropists (慈善家)than by government. But one striking fact about the past century is how much American innovation originated in federal projects; Silicon Valley would never have boomed were it not for the fact that state funding enabled ihe development of the World Wide Web, for example.31.What may be the best title for the passage?A.The Value of Creative IdeasB.The Importance of Basic ResearchC. Innovation in Silicon ValleyD. In Praise of “Useless” Endeavors32.According to Abraham Flexner, what is an important feature of modem thinking?A. Curiosity.B.Application.C. Devotion.D. Passion.33.The "undirected" research (Para. 3) refers to research _____ .A.not funded by government agenciesB.without any practical purpose in mindC.with indefinite experimental methodsD.supported by non-profit organizations34.Examples of initially "useless" research include all of the following EXCEPT_____ .A.quantum mechanicsB.theory of relativityC.superconductivityD.GPS tracking devices35.Flexner's article was reprinted because _____ .A.businesses in Silicon Valley wish to put pressure on the governmentB.Democrats believe that government funding should go to small businessesC.Republicans argue that scientific research should be financed by businessesD.some scientists worry that government will cut its funding for basic researchPassage FourIn 1902, Georges Melies made and released a movie called A TVip to the Moon. He speni his life considering this problem and came up with many solutions. Some of Tsiolkovsky’s solutions gave scientists in America and Russia ideas when they began to think about space travel. Only after a long time did they ever put a person inside a rocket and shoot him into space.Even after they began sending people into space, scientists were still trying to improve the shape of the rockets. The design changed many times, and eventually ended up looking like a half-rocket and half-airplane. The machine called space shuttle was used for many years. Now, the government lets private companies try their own designs for spaceships, and they have come up with many different,crazy-looking machines.36.In the movie A Trip to the Moon, the spaceship was sent to the moon _____ .A.in a capsuleB. in a bulletC. by a cannonD. by a gun37.The movie was based on a book written by _____ .A.Konstantin TsiolkovskyB. an unknown authorC. The blog and comments are followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers A t B, C and D. Choose the best answer and mark your aftswer on the Answer Sheet. The UKalone produces more than 170m tons of waste every year, much of it food packaging. Now we live in an absurd age where a packet of cookies can have seven layers of wrapping. While it has revolutionised the way we store and consume food, there isnow so much of it that landfills(垃圾填埋场)can’t cope. Some of it is poisonous, andsome of it never degrades. It can take 450 years for some types of plastic bottle to break down. Indeed, as Rachell e Strauss of the UK’s Zero Waste Week says, we never actually throw anything “away”一it's really just put somewhere else.lt’s easy to despair at the scale of handling the p lastic wrap, but it isn't beyond humanity to solve it—look at how the world took action on CFCs (含氯氟烃):thereare signs that the hole in the ozone layer is now closing. Food packaging ought to be a doddle.Comment 1:While as an individual I can do my best to avoid excessive packaging, it is really only government regulation that can force corporations to change their practices. Comment 2:I never understand why supermarket chains insist on covering products such as bananas and cucumbers in plastic wrap. Why? They have their own packaging--the skin or peel!Comment 3;I love packaging—if it's well designed of course. The government should be held responsible.42."A packet of cookies" is mentioned in Paragraph 2 to _____ .A. illustrate the problem of excessive packagingB. introduce the revolutionary way of packagingC.review the gradual development of packagingD. emphasize the necessity of food packaging43.The word “doddle”(Para. 3) probably means “something_____ ".A. no longer usefulB. extremely difficultC. beyond imaginationD. easily accomplished44.Which of the comments is positive about packaging?A. Before the end of this century, the earth may 48 10 billion people! To feed everyone, farmers must grow more food, They are trying to do so. World food production has gradually 49 over the years, in some parts of the world, 50 ,the population is growing faster than the food supply. Some experts fear the world will not be able to produce enough food fora 51 that never stops increasing. To grow more crops on the same 52 of land, farmers use fertilizers and pesticides(杀虫剂). Some plant new kinds of grains that produce more food. These things help — 53 they don't provide perfect solutions. The chemicals in fertilizers and pesticides can pollute water supplies. The new seeds developed by scientists have reached the 54 of what they can produce. When hungry people can get no more out of 55 field, they clear trees from hills and forests for new farmland, and in doing so they expose the soil. Then rain and floods may strip the topsoil from fields. This process is called erosion. Each yearDirections: In this part, there are three incomplete texts with 20 questions. Our household budgets are filled with both big and small expenses that we imagine can be cut out to save us loads of cash or, at the very least, spent better elsewhere. One of the things you have surely considered is using public transportation rather than your own vehicle. It would be easy to assume that public transportation is cheaper, because bus fare is far less expensive than gas, but those are not the only costs to consider. Take a step back to your high school economics class and try to rememberthe lesson about opportunity costs. He devoted great energy to writing the draft of his masterpiece, however, the draft was destroyed because of other’s carelessness. Facing the painful result, the writer kept his high spirits instead of losing his heart. He was so confident to treat the failure and never gave up, which impressed me most.We should learn from this great writer. It is true that life is full of difficulties and setbacks. What should we do when we are faced with something disappointing? From my perspective, on one hand, we should not get frustrated. On the other hand, we should try our best to draw lessons from failure. Only in this way will we achieve success in the future. In a word, let’s remember the old saying “Failure is the mother of success”. When we suffer failure, we should believe that success is not far away. If we hold a positive attitude towards failure, we will overcome difficulties and frustrations and win easily.。

2010年同等学力英语人员申请硕士学位外国语水平全国统一考试2010年同等学力英语人员申请硕士学位外国语水平全国统一考试Part ⅢReading Comprehension (45minutes, 30point)Directions: There are 5 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark the corresponding letter with a single bar across the square brackets on your machine-scoring ANSWER SHEET.Passage OneLoneliness has been linked to depression and other health problems. The loneliness spreads as neighbors whowere close friends now spend less time together. The study also found that loneliness spreads more easily among women than men.Researchers from the University of Chicago, Harvard and the University of California, San Diego, did the study. The findings appeared last month in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. The average person is said to experience feelings of loneliness about 48 days a year. The study found that having a lonely friend can add about 17 days. But every additional friend can decrease loneliness by about 5%, or two and a half days.Lonely people become less and less trusting of others .This makes it more and more difficult for them to make friends -and more likely that society will reject them.John Cacioppo at the University of Chicago led the study. He says it is important to recognize and deal with loneliness. He says people who have been pushed to the edges of society should receive help to repair their social networks. The aim should be to aggressively create what he calls a “protective barrier” against loneliness. This barrier, he says, can keep the whole network from coming apart.31. Besides loneliness, which of the following can also spread among people?A. FriendshipB. HappinessC. DepressionD. Smoking32. The Framingham Heart Study starting from 1948 ____A. expanded its research topicsB. involved 5,000 patients of depressionC. identified loneliness as one key factor for heart diseaseD. examined the relationship between loneliness and depression33. According to John Cacioppo at the University of Chicago, loneliness can _______A. result in aggressivenessB. cause people to be overprotectiveC. infect social networksD. push people to the verge of poverty36. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Loneliness can spreadB. Loneliness is linked to depressionC. Lonely people tend to grow fatD. Lonely people need more friendsPassage TwoCalifornia has a new program called the Digital Textbook Initiative. “Starting this fall with high school math and science. We will be the first state in the nation to provide schools with a state –approved list of digital textbooks.” That was GovernorArnold Schwarzenegger in June, talking about his effort to get schools to use materials available free online. He listed reasons why he thinks digital textbooks make sense.California approves traditional textbooks in six-year cycles. Digital one can offer the latest information. They lighten the load of school bags. They save paper and trees, and make learning more fun and interactive. And above all, he said, they help schools with their finances. The state has had to make severe cuts in school spending because of deep financial problems. More than six million students attend California public schools.Earlier this year, California invited content developers to offer digital math and science materials for high schools. These had to meet at least 90%of the state?s learning requirements. Specially trained teachers examined 16 textbooks and approved ten of them.Six of the ten were published by the CK12 Foundation, a nonprofit group that had been developing digital science and math books for about two years. The foundation paid teachers and other education professionals to write and edit them. The money came from a group financed by the Khosla Family.California cannot require schools to use the digital textbooks. Individual school districts will have to decide for themselves.Susan Martimo, a California Department of Education official, says she does not expect widespread use right away. Her best guess is that some schools with a lot of technology will be the first to use them, but only in addition to their traditional books.School administrators point out that the texts may be free online, but students need a way to access them. Not everyone has a computer or electronic reader. Schools could print outcopies, but that would not help the environment. Also, there is the cost to train teachers to use digital textbooks effectively.37. The Digital Textbook Initiative _______________A. will probably take effect in six yearsB. covers all the high school subjectsC. has been approved by all statesD. is advocated by California state governor38. So, what should we do? Exercise more? Eat less? Or both? The government feels it has to take responsibility for this expanding problem. The cheerful Mr. Pickwick, the hero of the novel by Charles Dickens, is seen in illustrations as someone who is plump (胖乎乎的) ---and happy. In 18th century paintings beauty is equated with rounded bodies and soft curves. But nowadays being overweight is seen as indicating neither a cheerful character nor beauty but an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. So what do y ou do? Diet? Not according to England?s chief medical officer, Sir Liam Donaldson. He says that physical activity is the key for reducing the risks of obesity, cancer and heart disease. And the Health Secretary John Reid even said that being inactive is as serious a risk factor in heart disease as smoking. So, having bought some cross trainers, how much exercise should you do? According to Sir Liam Donaldson, at least 30 minutes of moderate activity five days a week. Is going to the gym the answer? Luckily for those who find treadmills (跑步机) tedious, the Health Development Agency believes that physical activity that fits into people?s lives may be more effective. They suggest taking the stairs rather than the lift, walking up escalators, playing active games with your children, dancing or gardening. And according to a sports psychologist, Professor Biddle, gyms are not making the nation fit, and may even causeharm. There?s new scientific evidence that too much exercise may actually be bad for you. Scientists at the University of Ulster have found that unaccustomed exercise releases dangerous free radicals that can adversely affect normal function in unfit people. The only people who should push their bodies to that level of exercise on a regular basis are trained athletes. So, should we forget about gyms and follow some experts? advice to increase exercise in our daily life? After all, getting off the bus a stop early and walking the rest of the way can?t do any harm! One final thought. How come past generations lacked gym facilities but were leaner and fitter than people today?43. This passage is mainly about ______________A. how to keep fit and avoid fatnessB. increased risks for overweight peopleC. the dangers of exercise in the gymD. the benefit of a balanced diet44. What dose “this expanding problem” (Para 1) refer to?A. The slow growing up of overweight childrenB. The obesity time bomb warned of by doctorsC. To little exercise and too much dietD. Neglect of the health issue by the government45. Why does the author mention Mr. Pickwick in Charles Dickens? novel?A. He was portrayed in an 18th century painting.B. He is the hero of a world famous novel.C. He suffered from heart disease and stroke.D. He is the image of being plump and happy.46. According to Sir Liam Donaldson, what is the best way to avoid obesity?A. Being on dietB. Giving up smokingC. Being as inactive as possibleD. Doing physical activities47. Which of the following is NOT recommended by the Health Development Agency?A. Walking up escalators, dancing or gardening.B. Going to the gym to walk on treadmills.C. Taking the stairs rather than the lift.D. Playing active games with your children.48. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ________.A. too much exercise may actually be bad for healthB. experts? advice cannot be always followed.C. past generations longed for gym facilities we have todayD. moderate daily-life exercise can make us leaner and fitterPassage FourA metaphor is a poetic device that deals with comparison. It compares similar qualities of two dissimilar objects. With a simple metaphor, one object becomes the other. Love is a rose. Although this does not sound like a particularly rich image, a metaphor can communicate so much about a particular image that poets use them more than any other type of figurative language. The reason for this is that poets compose their poetry to express what they are experiencing emotionally at that moment. Consequently, what the poet imagines love to be may or may not be our perception of love. Therefore, the poet?s job is to enable us to experience it, to feel it the same way as the poet does.Let?s analyze this remarkably unsophisticated metaphor concerning love and the rose to see what it offers. Because the poet uses a comparison with a rose, first we must examine thecharacteristics of that flower. A rose is spectacular in its beauty, its petals(花瓣)are nicely soft, and its smell is pleasing. It?s possible to say that a rose is actually a feast to the senses of sight, touch, and smell. The rose?s appearance seems to border on perfection, each petal seemingly symmetrical in form. Isn?t this the way one?s love should be. A loved one should be a delight to one?s senses and seem perfect. “Be careful,” the metaphor warns: Love is a feast to the senses, but it can overwhelm us, and it can also hurt us and cause acute suffering. This is the poet?s perception of love ---an admonition(劝诫).What is the point? Just this: It took almost 14 sentences to clarify what a simple metaphor communicates in only four words. That is the artistry and the joy of the simple metaphor.49. According to the passage, what is a metaphor?A. A comparison between two different objects with similar features.B. A contrast between two different things to create a vivid image.C. A description of two similar objects in a poetic way.D. A literary device specially employed in poetry writing.50. The main idea of this passage is that ________________A. rose is a good image in poetryB. Love is sweet and pleasingC. metaphor is ambiguousD. metaphor is a great poetic device51. It can be inferred from the passage that a metaphor is ___A. difficult to understandB. rich in meaningC. not precise enoughD. like a flower52. As is meant by the author, thorns of a rose _________A. protect the rose form harmB. symbolize reduced loveC. add a new element to the image of loveD. represent objects of one?s affection53. The meaning of the love-is-a-rose metaphor is that___A. love is a true joyB. true love comes once in a lifetimeC. love does not last longD. love is both good and bad experiences54. According to the passage, poetry is intended to _____A. release angerB. entertain the readersC. express poets? ideasD. reward the sensesPassage FiveSome 23 million additional U.S. residents are expected to become more regular users of the U.S. health care system in the next several years, thanks to the passage of health care reform. Digitizing medical data has been promoted as one way to help the already burdened system manage the surge in patients. But putting people?s health information in databases and online is going to do more than simply reduce redundancies. It is already shifting the every way we seek and receive health care.“The social dynamics of care are changing,” says JohnGomez, vice president of Eclipsys, a medical information technology company. Most patients might not yet be willing to share their latest CT sca n images over Facebook, he notes, but many parents post their babies? ultrasound images, and countless patients nowadays use social networking sites to share information about conditions, treatments and doctors. With greater access to individualized health information------whether that is through a formal electronic medical record, a self-created personal health record or a quick instant-messaging session with a physician-------the traditional roles of doctors and patients are undergoing a rapid transition.“For as long as we?ve known, health care has been …I go to the physician, and they tell me what to do, and I do it,” says Nitu Kashyap, a physician and research fellow at the Yale Center for Medical Informatics. Soon more patients will be arriving at a ho spital or doctor?s office having reviewed their own record, latest test results and recommended articles about their health concerns. And even more individuals will be able to skip that visit altogether, instead sending a text message or e-mail to their care provider or consulting a personal health record or smart-phone application to answer their questions. These changes will be strengthened by the nationwide shift to electronic medical records, which has already begun. Although the majority of U.S. hospit als and doctor?s offices are still struggle to start the changeover, many patients already have electronic medical records-and some even have partial access to them. The My Chart program, in use at Cleveland Clinic, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and other facilities, is a Web portal (门户) through which patients can see basic medical information as well as some test results.Medical data is getting a new digital life, and it is jump-starting a “fundamental change in how care is provided,” Gomez says.55. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?A. The Future of Your Medical DataB. Challenges Against Doctors and HospitalC. Benefits of the U.S. Healthy Care ReformD. How to Access and Share Your Health Information56. Putting patient information in databases and online____A. enables more Americans to join the health care systemB. contributes to the passage of health care reformC. increases the burden of the U.S. health care systemD. changes how people seek and receive health care57. According to John Gomez, many patients use social networking sites to______A. change their social interactionsB. post their latest CT scan imagesC. share information about their health careD. show their babies? recent pict ures58. Which of the following is NOT changing the traditional roles of doctors and patients?A. A formal electronic medical recordB. An easier access to information onlineC. A self-created personal health recordD. A quick instant-messaging session with a doctor59. According to Nitu Kashyap, more patients in the future will_____A. refuse to follow their doctors? adviceB. be more dependent on their doctorsC. leave out their visit to doctors? offices and hospitalsD. have their health conditions examined through e-mail60. It is stated in the passage that ______________A. nationwide digitalization of medical data will begin soonB. most of U.S. hospitals and doctors are against the shiftC. patients are worried about the security of their health informationD. patients are staring to make use of their electronic medical recordsPart IV Close (15 minutes, 15 points, 1 for each)Directions: In this part, there is a passage with 15 blanks. 2010-2017年同等学力英语真题及答案
How to Handle the StressNowadays more and more people have been under various stresses and there has been an increase in stress-related diseases among employees and students. This phenomenon has aroused immediate concern and widespread discussion among the general public. From my perspective, the resources of stresses can be from our work, family and also from the society, and learning how to deal with stresses has far-reaching significance to our body health. As a matter of fact, some solutions to reduce stresses can be illustrated below. The first one that comes to my mind readily is to share our stress with others. It can be enormously helpful because we may feel quite relaxed after talking to others and things even turn better if we get any valuable suggestions from them. What’s more, making time for fun such as listening to music and watching movies may be good medicine. Additionally, it is also a great way to reduce anxiety to do a large number of physical activities. From what has been discussed above, I strongly believe that we should know how to reduce enormous stress because it poses a general threat to human body health. As a common employee, I often feel immense stress at work. In those cases, I always tried to talk with my close friends to hear their advice or just listen to my favorite music. Only by having both mental and physical health can we hope to do our job well in the future? My favorite way of keeping fitsObservations and research findings indicate that people are increasingly concerned abo ut keeping fits. The importance people attach to it and the rapid development of related s ervices are the signs of this. There are several ways of keeping fits. Dieting should be fundamental to one’s heal th. We are facing more choice than ever before. Therefore, we should be cautious to sele ct the proper foods and to control the reasonable amount. What’s more, taking experienc e is another essential way. In addition, nobody is exposed to be considered as healthy in mental disorder, so that keeping mental health is also important. As for me, I am exerting all my strength on keeping my fits, by taking reasonable di eting and proper exercise and by remaining in good mind. In particular, I like jogging, m ore than four times per week, and approximately .Nowadays, more and more people are concerned about the problem of environmental protection, for the pollution has brought us so many bad influences. It is important for us to realize that it is everyone’s duty to protect our environment. To cope with this nation-wide problem, our government has started to take a series of effective measures. The most effective way is to save energy and reduce carbon emission. Because every year billions of tons of carbon dioxide are emitted into the air, which in part, result in the global warming and climate changing. For me, I am trying to make my own contributions. Firstly, I go to work by bus instead of driving. Secondly, I am getting to form the habit of saving water and electricity. For example, when I brush my teeth and wash my hands, I will never leave the water running again. What's more, I even recommend our relatives and friends to do so. By now my ways have been working perfectly and efficiently.Nowadays, with the rapid development of computer technology, in particular, the artificial intelligence (AI), the application of senior AI in the future has aroused a considerable world-wide concern. It is recently reported that in a ground-breaking fight between man and AI, the world champion of game Go was mercilessly defeated by Deep Mind Alpha Go, a product from Google, which gives rise to some people’s fear toward advanced AI i n future practice. And they take it for granted that human being would probably be totall y controlled by machine. As far as AI is concerned, I am fully convinced that we are supposed to maintain an obje ctive and positive attitude toward the emerging issue of artificial intelligence. It is know n to all that AI is nothing but the simulation of information on the process of conscious t hinking, or in another words, it’s something that subjects to its inventor’s design awaren ess. Consequently, as long as we are fully conscious of its possible disadvantages, certai n restrictions can be input into the program to avoid potential disastrous occurrences. Ad ditionally, it is well hoped that AI and intelligent machines can possibly free human labo rs from virtually all kinds of jobs. In that case/Above-mentioned discussion can safely le ad to the conclusion that what we are supposed to do is but to learn to get along with the inevitable development of computer technology and to adapt to the updated social struct ure changed by AI.What make happy couple happy? With the rapid development of modem society, an increasing number of people are c oncerned about the problem of the relationship between a husband and wife in our societ y. Not only the government but also the public have to pay more attention tothis phenomenon .Undoubtedly, it has brought about a great influence on people's work and living. Based on what has been discussed so far, it follows that some eflective solutions should be found to deal with the problem of the relationship between two people. On the one ha nd, the couples had better understand each other's daily habits so that they can form the s ame interests, which can make couples become happy on the other hand, no matter how close the relationship is between two people, we should give enough room to each other because keeping appropriate distance can make the two people more comfortable. Only i n these ways can we solve this problem successfully and eficctivcly. As far as I am concerned, no relationship will be free of difficulty or conflict. That happ y couples live happily is because that they are able to both apologize and forgive facing with difficulty or conflict.。

In the 1980s, the Italian journalist and author Tiziano Terzani, after many years of reporting across Asia, holed himself up in a cabin in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. "For a month I had no one to talk to except my dog Baoli," he wrote in his book A Fortune Teller Told Me . Terzani passed the time with books, observing nature, "listening to the winds in the trees, watching butterflies, enjoying silence." For the first time in a long while he felt free from the unending anxieties of daily life: "At last I had time to have time."Terzani"s embrace of isolation was relatively unusual: Humans have long considered solitude an inconvenience, something to avoid, a punishment, a realm of loners. Science has often associated it with negative outcomes. Freud, who linked solitude with anxiety, noted that, "in children the first fears relating to situations are those of darkness and solitude." John Cacioppo, a modern social neuro-scientist who has extensively studied loneliness—what he calls "chronic perceived isolation"—contends that, beyond damaging our thinking powers, isolation can even harm our physical health. But increasingly scientists are approaching solitude as something that, when pursued by choice, can prove a therapy. This is especially true in times of personal disorder, when the instinct is often for people to reach outside of themselves for support. "When people are experiencing crisis it"s not always just about you. It"s about how you are in society," explains Jack Fong, a sociologist at California State Polytechnic University who has studied solitude. In other words, when people remove themselves from the social context of their lives, they are better able to see how they"re shaped by that context. Thomas Merton, a monk and writer who spent years alone, held a similar notion. "We cannot see things in perspective until we cease to hug them to our breast," he writes in Thoughts in Solitude . The pigs soon ignored the X carriers in favor of the O"s. Then the team switched from real-life objects to T-shirts printed with X or O symbols. Still, the pigs ventured only toward the O-shirted people: they had transferred their knowledge to a two-dimensional format, a not-inconsiderable feat of reasoning.Fairly soon, I came to see that along with our closest living relatives, cetaceans (鲸目动物) too are masters of cultural learning, and elephants express profound joy and mourning with their social companions. Long-term studies in the wild on these mammals helped to fuel a perspective shift in our society: the public no longer so easily accepts monkeys made to undergo painful procedures in laboratories, elephants forced to perform in circuses, and dolphins kept in small tanks at theme parks.Over time, though, as I began to broaden out even further and explore the inner lives of fish, chicken, pigs, goats, and cows, I started to wonder: Will the new science of "food animals" bring an ethical revolution in terms of who we eat? In other words, will the breadth of our ethics start to catch up with the breadth of our science?Animal activists are already there, of course, committed to not eating these animals. But what about the rest of us? In it, he argued that the most powerful intellectual and technological breakthroughs usually emerged from research that initially appeared "useless", without much relevance to real life.As a result, it was vital, Flexner said, that these "useless" efforts should be supported, even if they did not produce an immediate payback, because otherwise the next wave of innovation simply would not occur. "Curiosity, which may or may not produce something useful, is probably the outstanding characteristic of modem thinking," he declared. In 1929, Flexner persuaded a wealthy American family, the Bambergers, to use some of their donations to fund the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) at Princeton to support exactly this kind of " undirected " research. And it paid off: brilliant Jewish scientists fleeing from Nazi Germany, such as Albert Einstein, gathered at the IAS to explore undirected ideas. And while some of these, such as Einstein"s own work developing his earlier theory of relativity, did not initially seem valuable, many eventually produced powerful applications (though after many decades)."Without Einstein"s theory, our GPS tracking devices would be inaccurate by about seven miles," writes Robbert Dijkgraaf, the current director of the IAS, in the foreword to a newly released reprint of Flexner"s article. Concepts such as quantum mechanics (量子力学) or superconductivity also seemed fairly useless at first—but yielded huge dividends at a later date. The reason why the IAS is re-releasing Flexner"s article now is that scientists such as Dijkgraaf fear this core principle is increasingly under threat. The Trump administration has released a projected budget that threatens to reduce funding for the arts, science and educational groups. Many Republicans believe that research is better financed by business or philanthropists (慈善家) than by government. But one striking fact about the past century is how much American innovation originated in federal projects; Silicon Valley would never have boomed were it not for the fact that state funding enabled the development of the World Wide Web, for example.(分数:5.00)(1).What may be the best title for the passage?(分数:1.00)A.The Value of Creative IdeasB.The Importance of Basic ResearchC.Innovation in Silicon ValleyD.In Praise of "Useless" Endeavors(2).According to Abraham Flexner, what is an important feature of modem thinking?(分数:1.00)A.Curiosity.B.Application.C.Devotion.D.Passion.(3).The "undirected" research (Para. 3) refers to research ______.(分数:1.00)A.not funded by government agenciesB.without any practical purpose in mindC.with indefinite experimental methodsD.supported by non-profit organizations(4).Examples of initially "useless" research include all of the following EXCEPT ______.(分数:1.00)A.quantum mechanicsB.theory of relativityC.superconductivityD.GPS tracking devices(5).Flexner"s article was reprinted because ______.(分数:1.00)A.businesses in Silicon Valley wish to put pressure on the governmentB.Democrats believe that government funding should go to small businessesC.Republicans argue that scientific research should be financed by businessesD.some scientists worry that government will cut its funding for basic research十一、Passage Four (总题数:1,分数:5.00)In 1902, Georges Méliès made and released a movie called A Trip to the Moon . He decided one couldn"t, but it got him thinking of other ways one could get people to the moon. He spent his life considering this problem and came up with many solutions. Some of Tsiolkovsky"s solutions gave scientists in America and Russia ideas when they began to think about space travel. Often the rockets weren"t safe, and they exploded fight there on the launch pad, or shot off in crazy directions like a balloon that you blow up and release without tying it first. After many, many tests, they started to send small animals into space. Now, the government lets private companies try their own designs for spaceships, and they have come up with many different, crazy-looking machines.(分数:5.00)(1).In the movie A Trip to the Moon , the spaceship was sent to the moon ______.(分数:1.00)A.in a capsuleB.in a bulletC.by a cannonD.by a gun(2).The movie was based on a book written by ______.(分数:1.00)A.Konstantin TsiolkovskyB.an unknown authorC.Georges MélièsD.Jules Verne(3).Before the invention of a spaceship, possible solutions of space travel included all of the following EXCEPT______.(分数:1.00)A.bombsB.balloonsC.airplanesD.rockets(4).What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?(分数:1.00)A.It took a long time and hard work to send a person into space.B.American scientists worked better than Russian scientists.C.Scientists from Russia and America had close cooperation.D.The design of the rocket was inspired by the movie A Trip to the Moon.(5).The word "shoot" (Para. 4) is closest in meaning to ______.(分数:1.00)A.send with great forceB.break into many piecesC.fix a problemD.attack with a weapon十二、Section B (总题数:1,分数:5.00)In 2003, I was told by a restaurant owner on a Thai island that local fishermen used to wrap their lunch in banana leaves, which they would then casually toss overboard when done. That was OK, because the leaves decayed and the fish ate them all. But in the past decade, he said, plastic wrap had rapidly replaced banana leaves, so the beach was edged with a crust of plastic. This is a worldwide problem—we can"t point the finger at Thai fishermen. The UK alone produces more than 170m tons of waste every year, much of it food packaging. Now we live in an absurd age where a packet of cookies can have seven layers of wrapping. While it has revolut-ionised the way we store and consume food, there is now so much of it that landfills (垃圾填埋场) can"t cope. Some of it is poisonous, and some of it never degrades. It can take 450 years for some types of plastic bottle to break down. Indeed, as Rachelle Strauss of the UK"s Zero Waste Week says, we never actually throw anything "away"—it"s really just put somewhere else. It"s easy to despair at the scale of handling the plastic wrap, but it isn"t beyond humanity to solve it—look at how the world took action on CFCs (含氯氟烃): there are signs that the hole in the ozone layer is now closing. Food packaging ought to be a doddle .Comment 1:While as an individual I can do my best to avoid excessive packaging, it is really only government regulation that can force corporations to change their practices.Comment 2:I never understand why supermarket chains insist on covering products such as bananas and cucumbers in plastic wrap. Why? They have their own packaging—the skin or peel!Comment 3:I love packaging—if it"s well designed of course. It helps us be more hygienic and practical. The solution to these packaging necessities is clearly to encourage the use of bio-degradable packaging.Comment 4:Before, everything we threw out was bio-degradable and now it"s not. Every 15 seconds, about 100 babies are born. Before the end of this century, the earth may 3 10 billion people! To feed everyone, farmers must grow more food. They are trying to do so. World food production has gradually 4 over the years. In some parts of the world, 5 , the population is growing faster than the food supply. Some experts fear the world will not be able to produce enough food for a 6 that never stops increasing. To grow more crops on the same 7 of land, farmers use fertilizers and pesticides (杀虫剂). Some plant new kinds of grains that produce more food. These things help— 8 they don"t provide perfect solutions. The chemicals in fertilizers and pesticides can pollute water supplies. The new seeds developed by scientists have reached the 9 of what they can produce. When hungry people can get no more out of 10 field, they clear trees from hills and forests for new farmland, and in doing so they expose the soil.
