New research has found that even if you give up smoking, the damage it has done to your genes (基因) will stay there for a much longer time.

In the research, a team of US scientists studied the blood of 16,000 people. Among them, some were smokers, some used to smoke, and the rest were non-smokers. Scientists pa red their genes and found that more than 7,000 genes of smokers had changed--a number that is one-third of known human genes.

According to NBC News, both heart disease and cancer are caused by genetic changes. Some people may have had the changes when they were born, but most people get them in their day-to-day lives while doing things like smoking.

When you stop smoking, a lot of these genes will return to normal within five years. This means your body is trying to heal (治愈) itself of the harmful effects of smoking. But the changes in some of the genes stay for longer. They can stay for as long as 30 years, It’s almost like leaving a footprint on wet cement (水泥) --it will always be there, even when you’ve walked away and when the c ement bees dry.

Although the study results may make people unhappy, there is a bright side: the findings could help scientists invent medicine to treat genetic damage caused by smoking or find ways to tell which people have heart disease or cancer risks.

25.The function of Paragraph 1 is to_________ .

A. give an example

B. make a parison

C. make an argument

D. introduce the topic of the passage

26.Most genetic changes happen because of___________ .

A. people’s bad living habit

B. environmental pollution

C. people’s condition at birth

D. heart disease and cancer

27.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refers to__________ .

A. the harmful effect

B. the cement

C. the footprint

D. the genetic change

28.Which of the following statements is true?

A. The findings are the fruit of more than three years’ research.

B. The findings help to find treatments for genetic damage caused by smoking.

C. The findings offer evidence that a damaged gene can heal itself.

D. The findings have prevented more people from starting smoking

With some of the best farmland in the world, America has been able to perfect its process of raising crops and animals. America’s history with farming is as l ong as the sto ry of the country.

The first settlers to America were interested in the profitability of raising a crop rather than just growing it to feed themselves. In Jamestown, the first cash crop was tobacco. Adaptable and easily managed, tobacco gave its settlers financial backing to move into other areas of agriculture. Until the Civil War, the Southeast was the primary producer of crops from their tobacco and cotton plantations.

With the Homestead Act, settlers began to move west in search of greater lands. The first crop that was generally introduced was wheat. Miles of farmland were established, and products such as corn, tomatoes, peanuts and potatoes became basic crops for the country. The Hatch Act of 1887 put a priority(优先事项)on establishing farmland across the country and put a special emphasis on teaching proper techniques to produce more products and feed the country. The family farm was born from this law.

Because of the Dust Bowl problem and the Depression, much of the farmland developed in earlier times was abandoned(抛弃). However, after World War II, orders were issued to make use of every

available piece of land for production. Over the next few decades, greater emphasis on environmental concerns played a key role in farming.

Now there are many different types of farms in America. The most popular one is the cash grain farm, specializing in corn and soybeans with various grains, beans and rice. Farms that grow vegetables, fruit and nursery crops are known as high value farms. Tobacco and cotton farms are usually kept to lands of their own. In addition to all the food that is grown, there are the livestock(牲畜) farms that raise cattle, dairy and eggs.

29. Reorder the following statements according to the events in the passage.

①The family farm was born.

②There are various types of farms in America.

③Wheat was generally introduced to America.

④Tobacco was planted in Jamestown as the first cash crop.

⑤Environmental concerns played an important role in farming.

A. ①④②③⑤

B. ④③①⑤②

C. ⑤①②③④

D. ③①④⑤②

30. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. The Homestead Act spread farmland across the country.

B. The livestock farm is the most popular type of farm in America.

C. Much of the farmland was abandoned due to World War II.

D. The first settlers to America raised cash crop to make money.

31. The best title for the passage would be ____________.

A. The History of Farming in America

B. America’s Farming policies

C. The Best Farmland in the World

D. The Different Types of Farms in America

China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Bei jing last year, I’ve found the opposite is true . There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around . For many, it’s the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also e in different colors—silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.

It’s fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on side walks. Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can’t provide.

Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture , I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather acpanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.

My first ride home was or derly(守秩序的) . To be safe , I stayed with a ”pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn’t want to get hit . So I took the ride carefully.

Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.I finally made it home . The feeling on the bicycle was amazing . The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.

32.According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today?

A.Because they are convenient and inexpensive.

B.Because they are traditional and safe.

C.Because they are colorful and available.

D.Because they are fast and environment friendly.

33.The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended ______________.

A. to use it for transport

B. to experience local culture

C. to ride it for fun

D. to improve his riding skills

34.How did the author feel about his street crossing?

A.It was boring. B. It was wonderful.

C.It was lively. D. It was difficult.

35.Which of the following best describes the author’s biking experience?

A.The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills.

B.The author was annoyed by the air while riding.

C.The author took great pleasure in biking.

D.The author was praised by the other bikers。

It consists of only two leaves and a strong stem with roots. Two leaves continue to grow and the stem thickens and can grow to be almost 2 meters high and 8 meters wide. Its lifespan is 400 to 1,500 years. It can survive up to five years with no rain. The plant is said to be very tastyeither raw or baked in hot ashes. ◆Dionaea muscipula Title: the Venus Fly Trap Dionaea muscipula is the most famous carnivorous(肉食性的) plant due to the active and efficient nature of its unique trap. It may be famous, but it’s also threatened. It produces a short leaf that forms two sides of a trap. Each side contains some sensitive hairs. When it is touched two to three times, the trap will shut in less than a second, fast enough to catch flies and other insects. The leaf, once closed, produces some enzymes(酶) that slowly dissolve the insects and supply the plant with food. ◆Rafflesia arnoldii Title: the world’s largest flower Rafflesia arnoldii, the largest flower in the world, is an exotic and rare plant. The flower is 3 feet across and weighs 15-24 pounds. However, you wouldn’t want to grow it in your garden. In a rainforest-type environment, it gives off a most unpleasant smell, which is somewhat like rotten meat. This is why it is often called the Corpse Plant by some natives of Indonesia where it comes. Its flowers only last for three days to a week. ◆Euphorbia obese Title: the Baseball Plant Euphorbia obese is known as the Baseball Plant. Over-harvesting by plant collectors for its interesting and curious appearance has severely reduced the wild population. However, it has become very common now. By growing euphorbia obese in large numbers, many gardens have been working to ensure that the plants being traded and sold among plant collectors are not wild plants. 21.
