According to a recent study; the more you strugglewhile you are teaming new information, the better you can remember it later. It was Kapur who came up with the idea that struggling can lead to better learning. Then he tested it out on students in Singapore. He separated students into two groups, with students in the first group asked to solve math problems with the teacher's help and those in the second group to solve the same problems by helping one another, instead of getting help from the teacher. With the teacher's help, students in the first group were able to find the correct answers.Students in the second group did not solve the problems correctly, but they did come;up with a lot of good ideas. The students were then tested on what they had learned. A challenging new book by theHarvard University psychologist Steven Pinker says that the answer is `yes."In The Better Angels of Our Nature Pinker presents data showing that human violence, while still very much with us today, has been gradually dropping. Moreover, he says, 0over the long history, women have been and will be a pacifying(实现和平的)force. Traditional war is a man's game: tribal(部落的)women never get together to attack neighboring villages." As mothers, women tend to maintain peaceful conditions in which to raise their children. Those with different opinions immediately reply that women have not made war simplybecause they have rarely been in power. If they had the power as leaders, the tough conditions of the world would force them to make the same decisions that men do. Margaret Thatcher, Golda Meir, and Indira Gandhi were powerful women; all of them led their countries to war.But it is also true that these women rose to leadership by playing according to the politicalrules of "a man's world." It was their success in conforming to male values that enabled their rise to leadership in the first place. If women held half of leadership positions, they might behave differently in power. So we are left with the broader question: does gender really matter in leadership? Variouspsychological studies show that men incline towards the hard power of command, while women are collaborative(协作的)and instinctively understand the soft power of attraction and persuasion.38. Pinker's book The Better Angels of Our Nature mainly discussesA) women's psychological state B) women's function in societyC) women's desire for power D) women's tendency for peace39. According to psychological studies, the main difference between men and women in power lies in .A) their motive for power of commandC) their attitude towards human violenceB) their tendency to apply power they haveD) their preferred conditions to raise childrenPassage ThreeQuestions 43 to 47 are based on the following passage.A boat rocks gently in the warm, clear water off the coast of Lizard Island. At night, researchers on board the boat lower into the ocean three large iron traps with raw chicken inside. Video cameras are attached to the traps. The researchers watch and take note of how many nautiluses(鹅鹉螺),attracted to the meat, swim past the traps overnight: In the~ morning, the team palls the traps back onto the boat. One of the best examples of a public good is national defense. One person can benefit from our national defense without reducing another persons benefits. In fact, it is difficult to keep any person in our society from enjoying the benefits of national defense. The market system does not work well in producing public goods. This is because a person who refuses to pay for a publicgood can not be kept from using it.Suppose that the neighbors in a high crime area decide to hire a police force. Each neighbor, except Mrs. Smith, agrees to pay $100 a year for it.Mrs. Smith refuses to pay because she knows that if all the others pay the $100, the police will guard the area anyway. So Mrs. Smith can enjoy the services of the police force without paying $100. The market system has no way to deal with this type of problem. For this reason, we can not ask each person to make a direct payment in the form. of product price. Therefore, we collect money for public goods by using taxes.1、According to the passage, public goods are______.A.services enjoyed by all peopleB.what we can buy and sell in publicC.products that we make for national defenseD.taxes paid by the people involved2、The writer gives the example of national defense in paragraph2 in order to show that______.A.there will be no safety if there is no national defenseB.all the people should be responsible for national defenseC.a public good is a shared benefit for the whole societyD.some public goods are more important than others3、The person who does not pay for a public good______.A.keeps himself from using its benefitB.cannot enjoy its benefit at any timeC.fails to keep its benefit from being usedD.enjoys its benefit all the same4、In the third paragraph the author explains______.A.what role the market system plays in producing public goodsB.how weak the market system is in producing public goodsC.why some people refuse to pay for public goodsD.what we can do to make use of the market system5、From the passage we learn that the purpose of collecting taxes is to______.A.ensure the continuous supply of public goodsB.reduce the difference between the rich and the poorC.get extra money to support public goodsD.remind people of their duty四、阅读理解二Accidents are caused; they dont just happen. The reason may be easy to sec: an overloaded tray, a shell out of reach, a patchof ice on the road. But more often than that there is a chain of events leading up to the misfortune—frustration, tiredness or just bad temper—that show what the accident really is, a sort of attack on oneself.Road accidents, for example, happen frequently after a family quarrel and we all know people who are accident-prone, so often at odds with themselves and the world that they seem to cause accidents for themselves and others.By definition, an accident is something you cannot predict or avoid, and the idea which used to be current, that the majority of road accidents are caused by a minority of criminally careless drivers, is not supported by insurance statistics. These show that most accidents involve ordinary motorists in a moment of carelessness or thoughtlessness. It is not always clear, either, what sort of conditions make people more likely to have an accident. For instance, the law requires all factories to take safety precautions and most companies have safety committees to make sure the regulations are observed, but still, every day in Britain, some fifty thousand men and women are absent from work due to an accident. These accidents are largely the result of human error or misjudgment—noise and fatigue, boredom or worry are possiblefactors which contribute to this. Doctors who work in factories have found that those who drink too much, usually people who have a high anxiety level, run three times the normal risk of accidents at work.1、This passage might be taken from___________A.a text bookB.a science fictionC.a popular magazineD.a report of a manufacturer2、"Accident-prone" here (in Para.2) means ______.A.liable to have accidentsB.injured in accidentsC.likely to die in accidentsD.responsible for road accidents3、The passage suggests that ______.A.accidents mostly result from slippery roadsB.accidents are usually caused by psychological factorsC.doctors run three times the normal risk of accidents in factoriesD.about 50,000 people lose their lives at work in Britainevery day4、Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a factor of accidents in this passage?A.Mood.B.Tiredness.C.Carelessness.D.Weather.5、Which do you think would be the best title for the passage?A.Accidents and AnxietyB.How Accidents Are CausedC.Human Factors in AccidentsD.How to Prevent Accidents on Roads and in Factories五、英译汉Translation from English to Chinese1、 It"s incredible that he made world-class fashion models out of these ambitious girls within only two years.A.令人难以置信的是,他仅在两年内就从这些雄心勃勃的女孩子中选择出人选参与世界级时装模特赛。

大学英语三级B级分类模拟题阅读理解(二)单项选择题Task 1Charlie Chaplin, the world-famous actor, was born in London in 1889. His father died when he was still a child. His mother's life was so hard that she finally went mad.Chaplin left England for America in 1913. At that time he was only a poor music-hall artist. His future was uncertain, but he was sure it could be better than his past. Not long after he came to America he was working first as a comedian and then as a film director. In 1918 he founded his own studios in Hollywood and began to make his own films. As an independent producer, he planned and put on more than a dozen screen comedies (funny plays) , in which he also played the leading parts. When he was on a visit to Britain, the American government refused to give him a reentry, for he was considered too left-winged. So in 1948 he decided to make his home in Switzerland. It was not until 1972 that Chaplin was invited to receive an apology and the reward of an Oscar. He was given a hero's welcome and deeply moved by it. Then in 1975, the 86-yearold Chaplin returned to London.1、 Chaplin left England for America in 1913 because ______A. he wanted to snake his own films in Holly woodB. he hoped that he could have a better future in the U.S.C. he felt very sad after his father's deathD. bothA. andB.2、 When Chaplin left England he was ______A. a famous stage actorB. a film actorC. a poor young actorD. a painter3、 Which of the following is not mentioned in the passage?A. Supply for the needs of the people leads to further pollution by industry. If rapid increase of world population in countries continues at the present rate, there may be much greater harm to human beings. Some scientists speak of the increase in numbers of people as "population pollution".About 2000 years ago, the world population was probably about 250 million; it reached a billion in 1850. By 1930 the population was two billion. It is now three and a half billion. It is expected to double by the year 2005. If the population continues to grow at the same rate, there will be 25 billion people in the world a hundred years from now!Man has been using the earth's resources more and more rapidly over the past years. Some of them are ah-nost used tip. Now many people believe that man's greatest problem is how to control the growth of the population. The material supplies in the world will be far from enough to support the human population in time to come, if the present rate of increase continues. But in one sense it is the most important river, because it serves more people than any other river. In every way the Changjiang River is China's life stream. The Changjiang isn't just a trade river, a high way along which goods are picked up and sent. It is an agricultural river as well. A lot of irrigation ditches go out from it to millions of tiny garden-size farms. There men and women work endlessly with very old hand tools -planting, watering, fertilizing, weeding, harvesting, raising the family's food and raising the nation's food. It begins somewhere high in the place north of Tibet, running down from a three-mile height, tt goes for hundreds of miles, shouting loud through valleys. Only in the last 1,000 miles of its 3,900-mile journey does the Changjiang River become the sunny and cheerful river.11、 The Changjiang River is ______A. mainly a trade riverB. not only a trade river but also an agricultural riverC. a very famous river mainly because it runs hundreds of milesD. not the longest river in the world, but it is the widest one12、 Where is the Changjiang River's starting spot? They can pick up new vocabulary, master rules or grammar, and learn to write in the new language more quicldy than others. They do not seem to be any more intelligent than others, so what makes language learning so much easier for them? Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful language learners we may discover a few of the techniques which make language learning easier for them.First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher; they discover their own wa ys to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions. When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from their mistakes.Successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language; they look for such a chance. They find the people who speak the language and they ask these peo ple to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to communicate; they are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things; they are willing to make mistakes and accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word. Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. They find it easy to practice using the language regularly because they want to learn with it.16、 What does the word "knack" in the first paragraph mean?A. Difficulty.B. A special skill or ability.C. Some people have good teachers and good books.18、 How do successful language learners learn language?A. They learn to think about the meaning of every new word.B. They learn the rules and patterns of the language from books.C. They learn special techniques from their teachers.D. They learn independently, actively, and purposefully.19、 Why do successful language learners iliad it easy to practice using the language regularly?A. They find it easy to communicate.B. They look for inexact information.C. They want to teach the language to others.D. They want to learn from people who speak the language.20、 Why did the author write the text?A. To teach people to speak English.B. To explain why language learning is difficult.C. To compare language learning with other types of learning.D. To encourage language learners to use these techniques.Task 5In an experiment designed to study the effect of majority opinion, small groups of subjects (实验对象) observed a standard straight line, and then judged which of three other lines equaled its length. One of the other lines was longer, one shorter, one equal to the standard; the differences were great enough that they could be told easily. All but one member of each group had been instructed to agree upon a wrong answer for a majority of the trials. The experimental subject was thus put against a majority, and the subject's problem was whether to disagree with the majority, or to doubt his or her own judgment and agree. Many subjects refused to change and continued to hold to their independent ideas. But a rather large number of them yielded under pressure from other's apparent judgments. The amount of yielding depended on the clarity of conditions (lack of clariw led to their following majority opinion) , individual differences, and the size of the opposition. With the opposition of only one other person, there was very little yielding; with two against one the amount of yielding became pronounced (显著的) ; and a majority of three was nearly as effective as larger majorities against the only one who disagreed.21、 What does the passage mainly discuss?A. The accuracy of threshold judgment.B. The inability of groups to estimate correct line length.C. The impact of majority opinion on the judgment of an individual.D. The necessity of clear conditions in conducting successful experiments.22、 A total of how many lines were shown to each group of subjects?A. Two.B. Three.C. FourD. Five.23、 Why did all but one of the members of each group choose the wrong line?A. They could not accurately judge which lines were equal in length.B. They were told to do so for the purpose of the study.C. They wanted to punish the person who disagreed.D. They did not understand the instruction.24、 It can be inferred from the passage that the main purpose of the experiment was to examine the tendency that many people have to ______A. competeB. follow other people's opinionC. criticizeD. communicate25、 The experiment described in the passage was most likely carried out by______A. physicistsB. mathematiciansC. chemistsD. psychologists 答案:单项选择题1、B事实细节题。

In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates for the doctor’s degree. Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modern industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines. One type of test is sometimes called an “objective” test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test, the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like answers to students who have not learned the material properly.1、Task 1Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36 through 40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should make the correct choice. In ancient times the most important examinations were spoken, not written. The two-party system of Britain was formed in the course of the development of the capitalist state and the political parties. In order to strengthen the state machine, the British bourgeoisie have let it come into being and exist in one form. or another form. since the 17th century. P. S. Treg idgo once said: “The more parties there are, the lesslikely it is that any one of them will be strong enough in Parliament to outvote all the others; but when there are only two, one of them is sure to have a majority of seats. This helps to ensure a stro ng and stable government.” This may be the reason why the British have the two-party system. The division into two parties grew out of the establishment of a Protestant Church of England in the 16th century. Because of a purely religious difference of opinion, the Puritans were separated from the broad body of the Anglican Church. The Puritan Anglicans were on the side of the King and Church, and their supporters were called by their opponents “Tories”. The Puritans were for Parliament and trade, and their supporters were called by the “Tories” “Whigs”. The Tories and the Whigs were in power by turns for a long time. In 1833, the Tory party split into two and its name was changed to Conservative. In the 1860s the Whigs became Liberals. From that time on, the Liberals and the Conservatives were in office by turns until 1922. The policies they put into effect were sometimes different, but they were both controlled by the rich. The working class became more and more unwilling to follow the Conservatives and the Liberals. They wanted to have their own party. So the Labour party was formed by the trade unions. Every transaction (交易) **munication. The objective of business is to produce and sell for a profit goods and services that satisfy society's needs and wants. Such goods and service are made available in a market. It is at the market that supply and demand are achieved in a purchase-sale transaction at a specific price. The profit is the seller's motive to engage in business.Successful enterprise management rests on three basic elements: leadership, motivation, **munication. When a highly **pany begins to go down, it is usually a consequence of incompetent leadership and a failure in communication is often found to be a contributing factor.Marketing is the performance of business activities that direct the flow of goods and services from producer to consumer or user. Simply to produce a product is not enough. The product must be transported, stored, priced, advertised, and sold to satisfy human needs and wants.Communication is a major part of international marketing. The right product must be offered for sale in the right place and at the right time and at the right price. And the right message must be communicated via the right media to the right market targets at the right time. It is necessary to provide the information that buyers need to make purchasing decisions. This passage is most probably taken from ______.A. a dictionaryB. a textbookC. an advertisementD. an exercise-bookPassage TwoAdvertising can be thought of "as the means of making something known in order to buy or sell goods or services". Advertising aims to increase people's awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread message, and the press offers a fairly cheap method of advertizing. Magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema **mercial radio are useful for local markets. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective. Posters are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertising. We might ask whether the cost of advertising is paid for by the manufacturer or by the consumer. Since advertising forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for advertising. However, if large scale advertising leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less.It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertising on sales. When the market is growing, advertising helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertising may prevent a bigger fall in sales than what would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertising if they were not convinced of its value to them.32. Many people repair their own cars, build their own garages, even remodel their own houses. Soon they may also be writing their own books. In Hollywood there is a company that publishes children's books with the help of computers. Although other **panies also publish that way, this **pany is very unusual. It "personalizes" (让读者人物化) the books by having **puter make the reader the leading character in the story. Here is how they do it. Let us say your child is named Jenny. She lives on Oak Drive in St. Louis, has a dog named Spot, a cat named Tabby, and three playmates whose names are Besty, Sandy, and Jody. **puter uses this information to fill out a story that has already been prepared and illustrated. The story is then printed with standard equipment as a hardcover book. A child who receives such a book might say, "This book is about me. " **pany therefore calls itself the "Me-Books Publishing Company".Children like the me-books because they like to see in print their own names and the names of their friends and their pets. But more important, " personalization" has been found to be an important tool in developing enthusiasm for reading. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories, and, of course, advertisements. There are all sorts of advertisements. The new system is designed to give a warming seconds before an earthquake strikes. That may not sound like very long. However, it could give people time to get under a table. The flow of electric power or gas could be cut, air traffic controllers could warn away pilots. Evenso-called “smart buildings” could be designed to get ready.Richard Allen of the University of Wisconsin and Hiroo Kananmori of the California Institute of Technology developed the program. They call it the Earthquake Alarm System. A report published in Science magazine describes it.The system uses a mathematical program to measure information collected by instruments placed across the Los Angeles area. Southern California already has more than 150 stations that measure movements within the ground. The information they collect is sent to a high-speed computer. The new system is designed to estimate the strength of the earthquake once the shaking starts. Areas directly above the center of the earthquake would have the least warning. Distant places might have as long as forty seconds.Professor Allen notes that an early warning system for earthquakes would require a major campaign of public education. Then, another problem is the possibility of false alarms.48.
