Q: 您好,杰克逊先生。
您在中国己连续工作了三年,您能否谈一下中美两国生意人在商务沟通方式上有何不同之处? Hi, Mr. Jackson. You have been working in China for three years. Can you tell us how you feel about the differences in business communication style between Chinese and American businessmen? A: With pleasure. 1 think there are at least two differences in the way of business communication between Chinese and American businesspeople. First, Chinese businessmen tendto have business negotiations in a rather indirect manner, as opposed(与…相反) to the more direct manner of American businesspeople. The Chinese take time to learn if their prospective(预期的) business contacts are really reliable, 中国人会花费时间来了解他们将要与之打交道的商人是否靠得住,for example, by inviting them to a party and socializing((与…)交往,联谊)with them. In contrast, Americans usually act with the "get down-to-business-first" mentality. Second, the decision making process of Chinese companies is generally slow and time-consuming. This is because most Chinese companies keep to the "bottom-up, then top-down and then bottom-up" decision-making principle(原则) which involves many people at different levels. 各个层次上的许多人士都介人决策过程American companies, on the other hand, usually operate withquick decisions made by the top management. 1 hope American businesspeople in China will understand these differences in business practices and adjust to the Chinese way.Q: 美国式的经营之道在我们中国人看来往往显得咄咄逼人。

Listen to the passage about healthy eating and then choose the best answer to each question you have heard.Increasingly over the past 10 years people, especially young people, have become aware of the need to change their eating habits, because much of the food they eat particularly processed food is not good for the health. Consequently there has been a growing interest in natural foods, foods which do not contain chemical additives and which have not been affected by chemical fertilizers widely used in farming today. Natural foods, for example, are vegetables, fruit, and grain, which have been grown in soil that is rich in organic matters. In simple terms, this means that the soil has been nourished by unused vegetable matter which provides it with the essential vitamins and minerals. This in itself has a natural process compared with the use of chemicals and fertilizers. The main purpose of which is to increase the amount but not the quality of foods grown in commercial farming areas. Natural foods also include animals which have been allowed to feed and move freely in healthy pastures. Compare this with what happens in the mass production of poultry there are battery farms, for example, where thousands of chickens live crowded together in one building, and are fed on food which is little better than rubbish. Chickens kept in this way are not only tasteless as food, they also produces eggs which lack important vitamins. There are other aspects of healthy eating which are now receiving increasing attention from experts on diet. Take for example, the question of sugar. This is actually a non-essential food. Although a natural alternative such as honey can be used to sweeten food if this is necessary, we can’t in fact do without it. It is not that sugar is harmful in itself, but it does seem to be an addictive. The quantity we used has grown steadily over the last 2 centuries. And in Britain today each person consumes an average of 20 pounds a year. Yet all it does is to provide us with energy in the form of calories. There are no vitamins in it, no minerals, and no fiber. It is significant that nowadays fiber is considered to be an important part of a healthy diet. In white bread, for example, the fiber has been removed. But it is present in un-refined flour and of course in vegetables. It is interesting to know that in countries where the national diet contains large quantities of un-refined flour and vegetables, certain diseases are comparatively rare. Hence, the emphasis is placed on the eating of whole meal bread and more vegetables by modern experts on healthy eating.Questions:1) Why have people become more interested in natural foods?2) Which of the following statements is true about natural foods?3) Why can’t battery chickens be called natural food?4) According to the passage which of the following statements is true?2. Listen to a short talk about the business lunch. And then choose the best answer to each question you hear.American businessmen frequently use social situations to make business deals. One of the best examples of this practice is the business lunch. Therefore knowing how to conduct yourself at a business lunch is often just as important as the business discussion. For formal business lunches it is wise to phone at least one day ahead to reserve a table. After you have been seated and given a menu your waiter will come and ask if you would like to order anything to drink. Nowadays it is quite acceptable to order mineral water, a soda, or fruit juice, apart from wine, or a mixed drink. After he has taken your beverage order, your waiter will leave yo u to make your food selection from the menu you have been given. It is the host’s responsibility to discover whether or not his guests have any special dietary restrictions. If, however, a host does not do that, a guest should not announce his dietary practices to everyone at the table. Instead he should discretely ask the waiter about the ingredients of any dish in question. He should also have in mind a second dish that he might order just in case. Usually the host will allow his guests to order first. Occasionally a host may collect orders ahead of time in place himself. Napkin should be placed on your lap and used periodically to wipe the corners of your mouth, especially when you are eating soup, saladwith dressing, or an en tray in a sauce. When you finish the meal the napkin is then placed on the table beside the plate.Questions:1) Which of the following is recommended for a formal business lunch?2) After being seated and given the menu, what are you supposed to order first?3) What should you do if you got any dietary restrictions?4) According to the talk where should you put the napkin when you finish the meal?2. What a charming restaurant. Listen to the conversation which takes place at a restaurant and then choose the best answer to each question you hear.W: My dear! What a charming restaurant! It has such an old country air about it.M: Yes, it’s one of the best Italian restaurants in town. The deco is pleasant, the music good, and the food delicious.W: Is that the owner’s wife over there? She is dressed in a very latest European fashion.M: She is the owner. She and her family go to Italy every year to keep in touch with the trends in fashion and food, and in deco too. But she doesn’t actually change the food or deco here very much. Constant change would be upsetting to the customers. Besides, the customers expect certain characteristics in an Italian restaurant. And she can’t change those or the restaurant would lose some of its appeal to the customers.W: Like the red and white table cloth you mean.M: Exactly, and the music. But however conservative she is in the restaurant, she always wears the latest style in clothing. The latest dignified style of course.W: Yes. Well, what shall we order?M: I would suggest an appetizer, and then I am having either sea food or chickens since I had red meat last night.W: I think I’d like to try this flounder dish.M: Good. Shall we order wine?W: Yes, let’s have a white wine.M: OK. I will get this chicken dish. Would you like to have pastry and coffee for desert?W: Yes, if I am not too full by that time. Let’s hold off ordering desert until later. Questions:1) What kind of restaurant is the couple in?2) How does the owner appeal?3) What can we most safely infer about the deco in the restaurant?4) What did the man eat last night?5) Why might the woman skip desert?3. A well balanced breakfast. Listen to a short talk about a well balanced breakfast. And then choose the best answer to each question you hear.In addition to exercising regularly, eating a good breakfast is considered by many health experts to be a significant part of a successful way of reduction plan. After a night fasting, the body needs to be replenished with nutrients, in order to maintain a high level of energy throughout the day. Several nutritionists suggest that dieters should eat up to one third of their daily calories at breakfast time. These calories should be in the form of a balanced meal of nutritious food. A balanced meal consists of 5 key elements, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. People who are dieting need a variety of foods to a sure of constant supply of nutrients their bodies need. If a well balanced diet is not followed, the dieter may become sleepy, nervous or feel out of sorts. If a poor diet is maintained for long period of time, the dieters may become vitamin deficient. Vitamin deficiency can cause serious health problems. For these reasons many doctors recommend that everyone, especially those on diet, start the day with up to one third of the daily requirement of nutrients in the form of a well balanced breakfast.Questions:1) What is the talk mainly about?2) According to some nutritionists how much of the days total calories should be consumed at breakfast?3) According to the speaker what short of balanced meal consist of?4) According to the speaker what will a poor diet lead to?Part four. Well, if you got home from work or school and you didn’t want to cook, you’d had this cooking robot. You could program certain menus into robot. Each menu would have a number, and you could punch in that number. Then the robot would start cooking. I mean the robot would do everything. You could call the robot from an outside phone, from school or work, from your car, wherever, and the robot would start cooking. The meal would be ready by the time you got home. Wouldn’t that be great?
记住一句话:No pains, no gains. 轻易得来的东西,也很容易失去。
2)拿出课文的配套录音,边听,边在准备好的白纸上记笔记。
大约每听完两句话按一下pause。

Unit 5. Part one. The inhabitants of a small island.2. Exercises. 1. Listen to the passage about the life on a small island and then answer the following questions. The inhabitants of a small island in the South Pacific discovered a plant which contained a powerful drug. This drug made it more difficult for them to think rationally. It stops them worrying about the future, and enables them to forget all their problems. At the same time it made it much easier for them to relax and enjoy themselves. So much so indeed that the whole population of the islands stopped working and spent all their time singing dancing and looking at the sea. Unfortunately this had a very bad effect on the country’s economy, and people began to run short of food. This however didn’t discourage the people from taking the drug. The prime minister made speeches on the TV, warning them about the drug. But nobody took any notice. And before long the economy was in ruins. This forced the government to make the drug illegal. But that only made the situation worse. The law couldn’t prevent the people from taking the drug which grew wild all over the island. On the contrary the fact that the drug was illegal merely encouraged people to take it. Eventually the government found a better solution. They exported the drug to other countries. This saved the islanders from having to work more than one day a week, and allowed them to spend the rest of their time sitting in the sun without a care of the world.2. A tiny village in France. Listen to the following passage about a small village and then choose the correct answer to each question you hear.Once every year for the last few years we have visited our friends in a small tiny little village in the middle of France. And they bought a cowshed, and it was literally a cowshed not fit to live in. And they have gradually ma de it better and renovated it. And it’s in a beautiful position. It’s on the top of a hill. And for miles around you can see this beautiful countryside. And I think only one another house. So you do need a car and you take the car into the tiny little village where there are about 4 or 5 shops and a very nice restaurant where you can go and have a 5 course meal for very little money. And also near is a very big lake, because this place is in the DorDon, and there are lots of lakes there. And we go there most afternoons and wind surf and sail. Also there is a very nice market, French Market, there once a week, where you get lovely parties, lovely fresh fish, really good fresh fish and lovely bowls and baskets which the local people have made. I like this part of France very much. But I think it’s a shame that there are too many English people there.Questions:1) How often does the speaker visit his friends in France?2) In which part of France do his friends live?3) What was their house before they modernized it?4) Where is the house located?5) According to the passage which of the following statements is not true?2. I came from a small town. Listen to the following passage about a town in the US, and then choose the correct answer to each question you hear.I come from a place, I come from the northern United States, Rochester Minnesota. It’s a town of about 50,000 people. And it’s a very clean town. It’s an ordinary town, fairly wealthy, but it’s a bit strange because there are a lot of transience,a lot of people who don’t live there. It’s the home of mild clinic. So there are thousands and thousands of people who come every year. The other thing is there are also a lot of foreign residents, a lot of doctors and nursesare from other countries, and so it makes what could be a really dull mid-west town something special. The library is very good. Cultural events are much more interesting than the rest of Minnesota, and actually it’s not a bad place to grow up. On the other hand I was dying to leave there. And all I could think of was getting away from the mid-west in the cold winters. You have about 6 months when it’s almost too cold to go outside. A lot of the buildings are designed so that you can walk from one to the other underground. There is a big pedestrian subway system so you can avoid all these snow.Questions:1) According to the passage what is unusual about the town as described by the speaker?2) About how many people are there in the town?3) Who are the foreign residents in the town?4) In which parts of the United States is the town situated?5) How does the speaker feel about being a child there?6) How did the people in the town avoid the snow?3. What kind of city is it? Listen to the following passage about Tokyo. And then choose the correct answer to each question you hear. What kind of city is it? It’s a very modern city. I expected that Tokyo would be quite old. But there are very few parts of it which are old in fact at all. Because it was fire bombed during the second world war by the Americans. There are one or two temples that survived, but basically it’s a city that’s being built since 1945. A lot of it is low rise, one, two, three storeys houses because of the earthquake danger, because it gets lots of earthquakes. Once you have mastered a little bit of Japanese it’s relatively easy to get around Tokyo, because they get excellent subway system and it’s quick and easy to get around. The problem is of course Tokyo is the city of 13,14,15 million people and they all want to get around at exactly the same time. So especially if you are travelling in the rush hours, 8 o’clock in the morning, 5 o’clock at night, it is a question in many of the big stations being pushed onto the train. They paid students a bit of pocket money to do this. Right in the center of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace. And that’s set in delightful gardens, but it is completely closed to the public, so nobody have seen it. In the rest of Tokyo there are 10, 12 public gardens but they tend to get very filled up of people especially during national holidays. Other than that it’s just street after street, and block after block very similar houses as I say one or two storied houses which just go on and on for mile after mile, because Tokyo extends hundreds of square miles, a massive city.Questions:1) What’s special with most of the buildings in Tokyo?2) Why is it relatively easy to get around Tokyo according to the speaker?3) How do you get on the trains in the busy periods of the day?4) Why is it a problem to go to the public gardens?5) In which part of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace located?Part 4. Listening and translation. 2. Exercises.1. Sentence translation. Listen and translate each sentence you have heard into Chinese. And I have to handle that first.2) We wish to get in touch with the local firm and set up a joint venture. We are planning to expand into the Asian market.3) I can’t decide now. I’ll have to phone my head office and inquire before I can give you a definite answer.4) The meeting was cancelled because the chairman of the board came down with the flu. He will stay away from his office for the next 2 or 3 days.5) Over 1 billion people world wide are over-weight. And that number will increase to 1.5 billion by 2015 unless current trends are reversed.2. Passage translation. Listen and translate each passage you have heard into Chinese. Then write it in the space given below. You may take notes while you are listening.1) Now in this industrial world people are inclined to choose material possessions. This is true of doctors too. The high income of doctor is the envy of the other people. Many high school graduates are eager to get into medical colleges, and countless girls consider doctors to be their best choice of husbands. For many years the public has charged that doctors in public hospitals demand money from patients. The amount of money the patients give determines the kind of treatment they receive.2) Products of our company received considerable attention of the exhibition visitors. We held many efficient business meetings and our stand was visited by over 6000 people. We established new business net works.
