Instead, we assume the things Americans value are obviously what everyone should believe in.But we should remember the saying: when you "assume," you make an "ass" out of "u" and "me." We only need to look at what happens when Americans go as advisors to developing countries to see how wrong our assumptions can be. Some Americans go thinking they're sharing pearls of wisdom with the backward natives about how to get things done right. They assume that stimulating competition and giving financial incentives for individual achievement will naturally change people's behavior and lead to success. When their projects barely get off the ground, they can't understand what went wrong. They mistakenly think that people must just be lazy or that they don't really want a higher standard of living.So the advisors wind up getting discouraged and going home, grateful to be surrounded by hardworking Americans again.In these situations, we should realize that American values may come from America's unique position as the land of opportunity. We are brought up with the American dream that everyone can work hard and get ahead. But we should realize that in countries with a different history and different opportunities, other values might be more important, like avoiding conflict or saving face.。

Values of AmericanFrom the English class about American values, I learned a great number of ideas and thoughts being useful for me and others in our country. There are 13 commonly held values included: personal control over the environment/responsibility, change seen as natural and positive, time and its control, equality/fairness, individualism/independence, self-help initiative, competition, future orientation, action/work orientation, informality, directness/openness, practicality/efficiency, materialism/acquisitiveness listed by Robert Kohls. I just write something about a few of them, which maybe should be used reference and learned, not all.Americans do not like those believing in the power of fate and seen as being primitive, backward or hopelessly naive. In other words, those are people who are superstitious and lazy, unwilling to devote themselves to bringing about improvement. That is to say that they believe in the power of humans that can control over whatever in the environment might possibly affect them.Americans place a very high value on changing the same as responsibility, with which they can do the best to achieve many outstanding accomplishments and practicality andefficiency. Change is mightily associated with improvement, progress and growth. They do not want to be restricted by the older, more traditional cultures, for example, stability, continuity, ancient heritage-none of which is taken seriously in the United States. That is to say that they are future orientation.Americans do not like those who goes to work so late and not get things done on time. In the company, as long as there is one employee being unreasonably late, he or she would be fired definitely. On time, saving time, planning time and cherishing time are all of utmost importance to most Americans. They are very good at making schedules in details and carrying them out in the planned time and in the smallest detail to improve efficiency and productivity.Americans commonly believe in the belief that everyone is equal no matter what social status you or your parents are and how much money you have and how intelligent you are and how normal your body is or not. As long as you are a person, you have the right to obtain any opportunity to enjoy your life. For example, learn in one school and work in one company and so on. Americans respect you not in terms of your high position or your too much money. You should earn the respect by working hard.Americans advocate individualism differing from the most of non-western countries. They assert that they are special and unique in any group in which they can freely express their own opinions anytime. Privacy, resulted from individualism, is regarded as positive, desirable and satisfying and even necessary. They do not like those who asks them their privacy and talk about their private things.Americans achieve every success all by themselves. In other words, they move up the social ladder not with the help of their rich or high-ranking family.Born in an affluent or superordinate family is just identified as an accident of birth. Independence and self-help control are approved highly in the United States. They even pride themselves in being born in a poor family largely different from most other countries.Americans are already very accustomed to the atmosphere of competition which leads to innovating resulting in high-quality product under the driven of challenges or forces. They do not like people who are very lazy and have a day aimlessly and do nothing. They routinely lead an active day in schedule. Do not stand there! Do something! Just do it! americanvalues(美国的价值观)As for values, my first thought about changes in America's values is that we are all much more materialistic than when I grew up, and making money seems so much more important to both individuals and to businesses. But I also think this is a value change that seems to be going on world wide, including China. Do you agree? Obviously I don't know what it is like in China, but the Chinese who live here have strong beliefs in both being well educated - and accumulating lots of wealth. And they tend to be very wealthy, at least in this part of the country. Lately the real estate market here has been booming, raising values, but the newspapers have all sorts of stories about how a lot of the buyers are wealthy Chinese buyers, both from here and from China. They are either buying here for investment reasons, or buying here to provide their children with homes. Frequently, they are paying all cash, which has not been that usual here, considering how expensive real estate is in this area.The other change in American values, and I have no idea if this is happening in China, is our focus on children. Families seem to revolve around their children's needs, buying them lots of toys, clothes, etc., even if they do not have a lot of money. In fact, a few years back, I read a study that when families go to restaurants, 80%of the time, the children choose the restaurant. When I was growing up, frequently the children didn't even go out to eat with their parents, and if they did, they were not asked which restaurant they wanted to go to. It's almost funny. I think there are both good and bad things with this change - children do seem to be more confident, but they also have more of a senseof entitlement.The other thing that I think is a strong American value, but becoming less so, is raising our children to be independent. Now more children, as they become adults, choose to stay living at home longer and seem to be better friends with their parents, really enjoying their parents more, than previous generations. I think the Asian cultures stress less independence from families, and more staying close and responsible for each other. I bet more American elderly end up in nursing homes than Chinese elderly as a result, although I really don't know.。

Basic American Values and BeliefsIndividual Freedom and Self-RelianceThe earliest settlers came to the North American continent to establish colonies which were free from the controls that existed in European societies.They wanted to escape the controls placed on their lives by kings and governments,priests and churches,noblemen and aristocrats.To a great extent,they succeeded.In 1776 the British colonial settlers declared their independence from England and established a new nation,the United States of America.In so doing,they overthrew the king of England and declared that the power to govern would lie in the hands of the people.They were now free from the power of the king.In 1789,when they wrote the Constitution for their new nation,they separated church and state so that there would never be a government-supported church.Also,in writing the Constitution they expressly forbade titles of nobility to ensure that an aristocratic society would not develop.There would be no ruling class of noblemen in the new nation.The historic decisions made by those first settlers have had a profound effect on the shaping of the American character.By limiting the power of the government and eliminating a formal aristocracy,they created a climate of freedom where the emphasis was on the individual.The United States came to be associated in their minds with the concept of individual freedom.This is probably the most basic of all the American values.Scholars and outside observes often ca ll this value”individualism,”but many Americans use the word”freedom.”Perhaps the word”freedom” is one of the most respected popular words in the United States today.There is,however,a price to be paid for this individual freedom:self-reliance.Americans believe that individuals must learn to rely on themselves or risk losing freedom.This means achieving both financial and emotional independence from their parents as early as possible,usually by age 18 or 21.It means that Americans believe they should take care of themselves,solve their own problems,and”stand on their own two feet.”Tocqueville observed the Americans’ belief in self-reliance 150years ago in the 1830s:They owe nothing to any man,they expect nothing from any man;they acquire the habit of alwaysconsidering themselves as standing alone,and theyare apt to imagine that their whole destiny is in their own hands.Self-reliance is one of the most difficult aspects of the American character to understand,but it is profoundly important.It stands in direct contrast to dependence,which has a negative connotation to most Americans.By being dependence,not only do you risk losing freedom,but you also risk losing the respect of your peers.Equality of Opportunity and CompetitionA second important reason why immigrants have traditionally been drawn to the United States is the beliefs that everyone has a chance to succeed in the U.S.Generations of immigrants from the earliest settlers to the present day have come with the expectation.They have felt that because individual are free from excessive political,and social controls,they have a better chance for success.Particularly important is the lack of a hereditary aristocracy.Because titles of nobility were forbidden in the Constitution,no formal class systemdeveloped in the United States.In the early years of American history many immigrants chose to leave the older European societies,believing that they had a better chance to succeed in America than in”the old country,”whe re their place in life was determined largely by the social class into which they were born.There is,however,a price to be paid for this equality of opportunity:competition.If much of life is seen as a race,then a person must run the race in order to succeed;a person must compete with others.The pressures of competition in the life of an American begin in childhood and continue until retirement from work.Learn to compete successfully is part of grow up in the United States.Material Wealth and Hard WorkA third reason why immigrants have traditionally come to the United States is to have a better life-that is,to raise their standard of living.For the vast majority of the immigrants who came here,it was probably the most compelling reason for leaving their homeland.Because of its incredibly abundant natural resources,the United States appeard to be a”land of plenty”where millions could come to seek their fortunes.Of course,most immigrants did not “get rich overnight”,and many of them suffered terribly,but the majority of them were eventually able to improve upon their former standard of living.Even if they were not able to achive the economic success they wanted,they could be fairly certain that their children would have the opportunity for a better life.The phrase “going from rags to riches”became a slogan for the great American drean.Because of the vast riches of the North American continent,the dream came true for many of the immigrants.They achieved material success;they became very attached to material things.Material wealth became a value to the American people.In understanding the relationship between what American believe and how they live,it is important to distinguish between idealism and reality.Ameican values such as equality of opportunity and self-reliance are ideals that may not necessarily describe the facts of American life. equality of opportunity,for example,is an ideal that is not always put into practice.In reality,some people have a better chance for success than others.Those who opportunities are born into rich families have more opportunities than those who are born into poor families.Inheriting money does give a person a decided advantage.Many black American have fewer opportunities than the average white Ameican,in spite of laws designed to promote equality of opportunity for all races.The fact that American ideal are only partly carried out in real life does not diminish their importance.Most American still believe in them and are strongly affected by them in their everyday lives.It is easier to understand what Americans are thinking and feeling if we can understand what these basic American values are and how they influence almost every facet of life in the United States.。
