32-IN THE NEWS - Indian Automaker Launches World’s Lowest -Priced Car T ata Motors is expected to sell millions of Nanos. Transcript of radio broadcast:27 March 2009This is IN THE NEWS in VOA Special English. This week the world's lowest-priced passenger car was launched in Mumbai, India. The Nano, made by Tata Motors, is expected to cause a transportation revolution for millions of Indian families. The small four-door car is about three meterslong. It will cost one hundred thousand Indianrupees, or two thousand dollars. That is abouthalf the price of similar cars offered by thenearest competitor. The Nano is expected tomake car ownership possible for more of India'spopulation. So it is being called "The People'sCar."Tata Motors chairman, Ratan Tata, says that was his main goal in building the Nano.RATAN TATA:"It was never conceived of as being the cheapest car. It was conceived of as being a car that would give the people of India anopportunity to own a car that had not been within their reach before. I hope that is what we will achieve."The Nano is a very simple car. The lowest-priced version does not include a radio or air conditioning. It has a six hundred twenty-four cubic centimeter, thirty-five horsepower, gas-powered engine. Still, it is a welcomed vehicle in a country where many families of three or four people ride two-wheeled vehicles.Industry observers predict that soon roads throughout the country could be filled with Nanos. Tata, India's top automaker, has done almost notraditional advertising of the Nano. However, early interest in the vehicle has been huge. The company says the Nano's Web site has been visited thirty million times.Tata Motors says it will begin taking orders for the car on April ninth both at car dealerships and on the Internet. However, the cars will not be ready for purchase until July. Demand is expected to be far greater than supply.Ratan Tata says the first one hundred thousand buyers of the car will bechosen by chance.Tata Chairman Ratan Tata stands next to the Nano at its launch in Mumbai, India.Production of the Nano has been delayed for several months. Land protests last year forced the company to close its factory in the Indian state of West Bengal. A new factory is being built in the state of Gujarat. The car is expected to be popular in industrial aswell as developing nations. The company says itplans to sell a version of the Nano in Europe intwo thousand eleven. After that, the car will alsobe available in the United States. Experts saydemand for low-priced automobiles is likely toincrease as the international economic crisiscontinues. However, the Nano also has its critics. Some say the new cars will increase India's traffic and pollution problems. However, Tata company officials say the Nano will produce less pollution than any other car in the country. And that's IN THE NEWS in VOA Special English, written by Brianna Blake. Transcript of radio broadcast:14 April 2009This is the VOA Special English Health Report. Here is a good reason to be hopeful about the future: it might help you stay alive.Findings from a new study were presented at a recent meeting of the American Psychosomatic Society. Researchers in the United States studied one hundred thousand women during an eight-year period, beginning in nineteen ninety-four . All of the women were fifty years of age or older . The study was part of the Women's Health Initiative organized by the National Institutes of Health. The women were asked questions that measured their beliefs or ideas about the future. The researchers attempted to identify each woman's personality eight years after gathering the information. The Nano is only about three meters long. The study found that hopeful individuals were fourteen percent less likely than other women to have died from any cause. The hopeful women were also thirty percent less likely to have died from heart disease after the eight years.Hilary Tindle from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pennsylvania was the lead author of the report. She said the study confirmed earlier research that linked optimistic feelings to longer life. The researchers also gathered information about people's education, financial earnings, physical activity and use of alcohol or cigarettes. Independent of those things, the findings still showed that optimists had less of a chance of dying during the eight-year period. Some women who answered the questions were found to be cynically hostile, or highly untrusting of others. These women were sixteen percent more likely to die than the others. They also were twenty-three percent more likely to die of cancer. The study also found that women who were not optimistic were more likely to smoke and have high blood pressure or diabetes. They were also more likely not to exercise.Professor Tindle says the study did not confirm whether optimism leads to healthier choices, or if it actually affects a person's physical health. She also says the study does not prove that negative emotions or distrust lead to bad health effects and shorter life. Yet there does appear to be a link that calls for more research. And that's the VOA Special English Health Report, written by Brianna Blake. For more health news, with transcripts and MP3s, go to . Transcript of radio broadcast:13 April 2009This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report. The president speaking during the NATO meeting in Strasbourg, FranceMany colleges and universities in the United States provide education in agriculture. But only a few schools offer experience in traditional hands-on field work in addition to classes.Sustainable agriculture is a major goal at these colleges. They teach the need for farming to improve the environment and make good use of natural resources. Students grow organic food and use as little fossil fuels and chemicals as possible.Sterling College in Craftsbury Common, Vermont, is one of the colleges that supports sustainable agriculture. Students produce some of their own food. They prepare the soil for planting with their hands or simple tools. They do not use much big machinery that uses gasoline. This month, students are making their own sugar and maple syrup. After liquid sap is taken from sugar maple trees, it goes to a sugarhouse where the sap is boiled. Students built the sugarhouse. The college farm has solar-powered barns, gardens, fruit trees, greenhouses and animals.Sterling College President Will Wootton says the school's SustainableAgriculture Program includes pay for farm jobs. The money reduces the cost of the students' education. The students care for steers, oxen, chickens, a turkey, goats and sheep. A pig and a guard llama also live on the farm.Goshen College in Wolf Lake, Indiana, is another college teachingsustainable agriculture. In June, students at the Agroecology Summer Intensive Program begin taking courses like Introduction to Soils.Agroecology examines the connection between agricultural crops and the environment. At the same time, Goshen students start nine weeks of work on the college's farm. They will plant crops like collard greens, kale, tomatoes, lettuce and eggplant. They will mix leaves, animal waste and food waste from thecollege's kitchens to make compost. The students use the mixture to fertilize the soil instead of buying chemical fertilizers that could harm theenvironment.Professor Dale Hess directs Goshen College's Environmental Education Collegiate Program. Professor Hess says a major value of sustainableagriculture is making good use of what you have. He says knowing how to do this may be especially valuable if fossil fuel should become unavailable. Professor Hess says food security is national security.Agroecology students at Goshen College in Wolf Lake, IndianaAnd that's the VOA Special English Agriculture Report, written byJerilyn Watson. Transcript of radio broadcast:09 April 2009This is the VOA Special English Economics Report.April is National Financial Literacy Month in the United States. As the country faces a deep recession, Americans are paying closer attention to personal finance. Some critics partly blame the crisis on American s’ low savings rate and high personal debt. But efforts to increase financial knowledge have grown in the last ten years. Government, community and business leaders have pushed for teaching young people about the importance of saving, budgets and the true cost of credit. The Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy is based in Washington, D.C. It is an organization of about one hundred eighty groups, government agencies and businesses. Its goal is to provide financial knowledge to children and young adults before they get into debt.Jump$tart’s Executive Director Laura Levine says many young people misuse credit cards without meaning to. She says they often start by making the lowest payment required. Over time, their credit limit is increased, but they do not pay off their debt. Laura Levine says young people can take on more debt than they can deal with. The government says forty-five percent of college students have credit card debt. The average amount owed is more than three thousand dollars.High credit limits are especially dangerous for college students. John Ninfo is a bankruptcy judge in Rochester, New York. He started the Credit Abuse Resistance Education Program. It provides resources on its Web site for parents, teachers and students about financial issues. Judge Ninfo says he often sees people in their late twenties seeking bankruptcy protection in court. He says the combination of credit card debt and big student loans is burying young people in debt and driving many of them to bankruptcy. The results of bad credit can be serious. Seventy percent of employers look at the credit histories of job candidates. In some fields, like law enforcement, bad credit means you cannot get a job.Former President George Bush formed the Preside nt’s Advisory Council on Financial Literacy last year . That group has called for students at all grade levels to receive financial education. Currently, only seventeen states require personal finance to be taught at least as part of other courses. And that's the VOA Special English Economics Report, written by Mario Ritter . They promised to protect each other from the growing threat they saw from another former ally, the Soviet Union.Leaders from NATO countries have gatheredfor two days of meetings through Saturday inStrasbourg, France, and Kehl, Germany. Ten years ago at this time, NATO was bombing Serbia to end its violent campaign against ethnic Albanians in Kosovo.NATO first brought together the countries of Array Western Europe with Canada and the UnitedStates. Today it includes former enemies ofNATO that were members of the Soviet-ledWarsaw Pact. NATO's expansion to the east, toward the borders of Russia, has raisedRussian concerns. This week, Albania and Croatia officially joinedNATO -- bringing the alliance to twenty-eightnations. Transcript of radio broadcast:25 March 2009This is the VOA Special English Education Report.March Madness is the name for the busy championship season in American college basketball. But March also means another kind of madness -- the nervous wait for admissions letters from colleges and universities. This week in our Foreign Student Series, we jump ahead to the subject of where to live. Housing policies differ from school to school. Some schools have limited housing or none at all.Dormitory buildings might house a small number of students or many hundreds. Some dorms have suites. A suite has several bedrooms, acommon area and a bathroom. Other dorms have rooms along a common hallway. Two, three or four students might share a room.Males and females often live on different floorsof the same building. Or they might live on thesame floor, or in some cases even share a suiteif permitted. But single-sex housing is usuallyalso available.Different groups and organizations such asfraternities and sororities might have their ownhouses where their members live. And there isoften housing for married students. Some dorms are nice, others are not so nice. But many students say they like the chance to make friends and be near their classes.Cost is another consideration. Dorms can cost less than off-campus housing. A dormitory at the University of South Carolina in ColumbiaBut school-owned housing can also cost more, though the price may include meals. Here are some questions to ask before making a decision: How much privacy can a student expect? Will the school provide a single room if a student requests one? Will the school provide a special diet if a student needs one? And are any dorms open all year so international students can have a place to stay during long vacations?Kirsten Kennedy, housing director at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, says all first-year undergraduates there have to live in a dorm. After that, they are free to seek other housing.Students can apply to become resident assistants after living in the dorms for a year. International students can also apply to become resident assistants after a year in the dorms.Working as a resident assistant in student housing is one way to help finance an education. At many schools, RAs earn money as well as get their room and meals for free or at a reduced price. And that's the VOA Special English Education Report, written by Nancy Steinbach. Transcript of radio broadcast:21 March 2009This is the VOA Special English Development Report.Scientists are working to develop crop plants that can reduce the amount of water used for agriculture. Almost sixty percent of the world's freshwater withdrawals from rivers, lakes and other water resources go toward irrigating fields.Scientists are using biotechnology as well as traditional breeding methods to develop water-saving crops to feed a growing world.Thomas "Tommy" Carter is a plant scientist in NorthCarolina. He works for the Agricultural ResearchService in the United States Department ofAgriculture. He leads Team Drought, a group ofresearchers at five universities. They have beenusing conventional breeding methods to develop andtest soybeans that can grow well under dry conditions.Tommy Carter started working on drought-resistant soybeans in nineteen eighty-one. His research has taken him as far as China, where soybeans have been grown for thousands of years.Farmers in the United States, however, have grown soybeans for only about a century. Tommy Carter says the soybeans they grow are for the most part genetically similar. More differences, or diversification, could better protect crops against climate changes that can reduce production. Those changes include water shortages which could increase from global warming. The Agriculture Department has a soybean germplasm collection, a collection of genetic material passed from one generation to the next. Members of Team Drought studied more than two thousand five hundred examples from the collection. They looked at ones from the ancestral home of soybeans, Asia. Theysearched for germplasms that could keep plants from weakening and wilting during hot, dry summers in the United States.Tommy Carter says they found only five. But these slow-wilting lines, he says, produce four to eight bushels more than normal soybeans under drought conditions. The yield depends on location and environment.Scientists are also working on other plants that either use less water or use it better, or both. For example, companies like Monsanto, DuPont andSyngenta have been developing corn with reduced water needs. Monsanto expects to be ready in a few years to market its first corn seeds genetically engineered to resist drought. And that's the VOA Special English Development Report, written by Jerilyn Watson. Seattle's Post-Intelligencer became the first major paper to go Web-only, but cut most of its newsroom jobs. Transcript of radio broadcast:20 March 2009This is IN THE NEWS in VOA Special English. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer has become America's first major dailynewspaper to publish online-only. Hearst, the company that owns it, printed the final newspaper on Tuesday. The Seattle P-I was one hundred forty-six years old -- the oldest daily newspaper in Washington state. One hundred seventy people worked in thenewsroom. Now just twenty journalists willwork for . The city is left with onemajor local daily, the Seattle Times. Somepeople think it could also go online-only.Denver, Colorado, became a one-newspapercity a few weeks ago: the Rocky MountainNews closed. Other cities could soon follow.Mike Simonton is a media analyst at Fitch Ratings. He believes many two-newspaper markets will not survive through the end of next year. By that time, he says, there could even be some markets with no printed local paper each day.Newspaper companies like Hearst, he says, are experimenting with new business models to see what works. But he says any new product will have to be different enough that people will not be able to find it anywhere else. Some newspaper companies have recently sought bankruptcy protection. These include the Tribune Company, owner of the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times, among others.Newspapers earn most of their money from sales of advertising. But a lot of that market has moved to free or low-cost advertising on the Internet, including sites like Craigslist. Losses have only been intensified by the recession.Ad sales have always gone up and down with the economy. But onedifference this time is that many newspaper companies are heavily in debtfrom buying other newspapers.Seattle P-I employees in early March, before the newspaper became online-onlyPapers are cutting costs. Gannett, the nation's largest newspaper publisher, has cut more than one-fifth of its jobs in the past two years. More than eight thousand jobs have been lost.In Detroit, Michigan, the two big dailies are reducing home delivery to three days a week. In Ohio, the state's largest papers still compete but now share stories.Newspapers have lost millions of readers as a new generation has grown up. Yet much of the news that people get online still comes from newspapers. Most papers give it away free on their own sites. The Wall Street Journal is one of the few that charge for its online version.Last month bloggers celebrated what they called a historic moment. President Obama, at his first major press conference, called on a reporter for a Web-only operation, the Huffington Post. The United States Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and the press. But as budgets shrink, newspapers are printing fewer pages, less news. They have fewer reporters not just in foreign capitals, but even in Washington.Industry observers say quality reporting is being lost. The question now is to what extent it will find a new home on the Internet. And that's IN THE NEWS in VOA Special English, written by Brianna Blake. "Poor people will suffer the most. And we must continue to act in real time toprevent a human catastrophe ."The 24 member World Bank steering committee , called the development committee, was headed by Mexico's Finance Minister, Agustin Carstens ."The financial crisis is turning into a human and development calamity ," said Agustin Carstens. "Many people have already been driven into absolute poverty."From left: Robert Zoellick,Agustin Carstens, Dominique Strauss-Kahn at IMF headquarters in Washington, 26 Apr 2009The World Bank is providing Mexico with $200 million in loans to help it deal with the recent swine flu outbreak.Earlier, the steering committee for the International Monetary Fund announced that it is implement ing recommendations of the leaders of major advanced and developing economies, the G-20, giving the IMF more resources to help member nations in financial distress. The World Bank and the IMF are owned by their 185 member nations. The IMF is also being assigned a strengthened role to monitor financial markets - a move intended to forestall further financial crises. The bank and the fund are speeding up procedures that will give rising developing countries like China and India a greater say in the two Washington-based financial institutions.Clinton Assures Support for LebanonBy Edward YeranianCairo26 April 2009U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has made an unannounced stop in Lebanon. Clinton expressed hope that Lebanon's June parliamentary elections will be free and fair.U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's visit to Lebanon, on the heels of her trip Saturday to Baghdad, comes less than six weeks before parliamentary elections in early June. The next parliament will be the second elected since Syria pulled its troops out of Lebanon in April 2005, following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq al Hariri. Many Lebanese politicians accuse Syria of his killing, which Damascus steadfastly denies. The current parliament has had rocky relations with Syria, following a series of political assassinations.Clinton met with President Michel Suleiman, but pointedly avoided meeting other politicalfigures to avoid giving the impression theUnited States is supporting them."We certainly hope that the election will befree of intimidation and outside interferenceand that the results of the election willcontinue a moderate, positive direction thatwill benefit all of the people of Lebanon," she said. The Secretary of State also noted the Lebanese people have endured a great deal during 15 years of civil war and unrest."I want to assure any Lebanese citizen that the United States will never make any deal with Syria that sells out Lebanon and the Lebanese people," she said. "You have been through too much."Clinton also warned rival political forces, as well as outside meddlers that Washington would no longer tolerate political assassinations, which have been frequent in recent years:"There needs to be an absolute end to an era of impunity for politicalassassinations in Lebanon," she said. "It can not and must not be used as a bargaining chip."An international tribunal meeting in the Hague is investigating the slaying of former Prime Minister Rafiq al Hariri, as well as the deaths of a dozen other politicians and journalists, most of whom were opponents of Syria.Lebanese American University Political Science Professor Sami Baroudi says he thinks Washington wants to make sure the parliamentary elections take place on time, and without outside meddling:"It was kind of an unplanned visit, but it is an important indicator that the Obama Administration has not lost interest in Lebanon, entirely," saidBaroudi. "I think the position of the current administration is kind of clear to all parties, that the U.S. wants the elections, the U.S. is somewhatconcerned about whether Hezbollah is going to have a stronghold over the government, but I think the primary message is that the U.S. wants the political process to work and elections to take place."US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, left, shakes hands with Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, at the Lebanese Presidential Palace, in Baabda east of Beirut, Lebanon, 26 Apr 2009The Hezbollah party, which is supported by both Iran and Syria, enjoys veto-power in the current national unity government and a Hezbollah win in parliamentary elections would reinforce Syria's hand inside Lebanon.。
