Surprise! Some of the grandest sightseeing happens this time of the year. Here are three premier holiday destinations for your cold-weather adventures.Go Wild in Yellowstone National ParkWinter in Yellowstone means steaming geysers, cold temperatures, the intense quiet of deep snowfall and great wildlife viewing. It also means fewer people; some 29,000 people visit the park in January versus an average of 948,000 in the peak season —July.Yellowstone hosts the largest concentration of wildlife in the lower 48 states. Bison (野牛) have called the park home since prehistoric times. Some 100 wolves live here, making it one of the best iconic sites in the world to see the once-endangered Canis lupus. The vivid blues of Yellowstone's premier hot springs glow even more brilliantly against a backdrop (背景) of white snow.See the Ice Show at Lakeshores of the Great LakesTwo of America's four National Lakeshores lie along Lake Superior, where winter transforms the landscape into a magical world. In these remote northern places, ice is something to be climbed and snowstorms mean better conditions for skiing and snowshoeing. At Michigan's Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, massive curtains of frozen water cover sandstone cliffs (悬崖), and waterfalls freeze into dramatic columns of yellow and blue ice. The Michigan Ice Fest (Feb. 12-16) offers films, talks and classes in photography and ice climbing. Watching the ice climbers is a draw for many. Soar with Bald Eagles (白头海雕)It is amazing to see a bald eagle flying in slow circles in the sky, wings stretched to almost 8 feet across, or to watch it dive for food at speeds of nearly 100 mph. America's founding fathers adopted the eagle — a bird of “supreme (至高的) power and authority” — as the symbol for a new country.January is National Bald Eagle Watch Month, and you can spot these birds across the U.S. On the upper Mississippi River, as many as 2,500 bald eagles spend the winter feeding on fish below dams and in open water. In late January and early February, the birds begin nest-building. In Virginia, eagles settle along the Potomac in the Elizabeth Hartwell Mason Neck Refuge, just 18 miles outside of Washington, D.C.Notes:Lake Superior:苏必利尔湖,是世界上面积最大的淡水湖。

Extended
With the spread of Covid-19,it is difficult to travel. Are you eager to travel to take adventures? In your opinion, which continent is the most interesting?
教师可以表达“Exactly,Africa is a land full of mystery and charm.”本单元Extended reading板块的标题是An adven-ture in Africa,学生对adventure这个单词的中文意思非常熟悉,而教师搬出牛津字典对adventure的英文解释“an unusual exciting or dangerous experience,jour-neys or series of events”,再让学生通过标题预测作者一家人非洲之行将会如何。

The British are known for their sense of humour. However,it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example,if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain,he might say,“It’s a little damp(潮湿的)outside.” Or,if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, “She isn’t exactly friendly.” Understatement is used in unpleasant situations or to make another person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humour.Another key to understanding British humour that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly and unpleasant things that happen to their everyday life, for example, when someone accidentally falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes about people from different classes of society. They like to make joke about their accents, the way they dress and the way they behave. What’s more, the British love to watch comedies about people who do not know how to behave in society. The comedy series Mr Bean is a good example of this kind of humour. Mr Bean is the character created by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990.Mr bean doesn’t talk often, and instead he uses his body movements and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world cannot do. Mr Bean is popular in many countries around the world because you do not have to speak English to understand the humour. Because of this, many people have become familiar with the British sense of humour.1. Why is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes?A. The British often enlarge the fact.B. British jokes are connected with many different.C. The British try to make out that something is less important than it is.D. British jokes are not as funny as jokes in other countries.2. However,we would benefit a lot by changing our focus, according to communication skills trainer Marianna Pascal.Pascal has spent 20 years in Malaysia helping people speak better English. Over time, she has discovered the surprising truth How well somebody communicates in a new language has very little to do with his or her language level—but a lot more to do with the attitude.Pascal noticed that a lot of Malaysians went into English conversations with the feeling that they were going to be judged by how many mistakes they were going to make. And they had the idea of what good and proper English is supposed to be and how far they would have to go to get there. As a teacher, she’d noticed one special student named Faisal. Despite not knowing much English, this boy could just sit and listen to anybody very calmly and then he could express his thoughts clearly.Pascal realised when Faisal entered into an English conversation, he didn’t feel judged. He entirely focused on the person he was speaking to and the result he wanted to get. He had no thoughts on his own mistakes.Pascal believes that speaking a language is not like those exams that many of us have to take in school, where a tiny spelling or grammar mistake would result in a big red “×” from the teacher. In the real world. small mistakes don’t matter—what matters is whether we’re able to make ourselves understood. She concludes, “If you want to speak English like Faisal with that great confidence, here’s one thing that you can do when you speak: Don’t focus on yourself. Focus on the other person and the result you want to achieve.”1. Why was Faisal successful in English conversation according to Pascal?A. His spoken English was quite excellent.B. His attitude to speaking English was right.C. He and his partner were good friend.D. He made few grammatical mistakes.2. What is Pascal’s attitude to the mistakes English learners make?A. Tolerant.B. Careful.C. Grateful.D. Worried.3. What should you do if you want to communicate effectively in English?A. Try to express yourself correctly.B. Remember to use advanced grammar.C. A.Ollivier Jean-Baptiste, 25, a vlogger from France living in China, delivered a speech on the latest episode of the China Daily Youth Power series. The episode, named "Timeless Tales from China", was aired on Jan 30. In his speech, titled "Bridging Cultures: A Personal Journey from France to China", Jean-Baptiste spoke about his initial impressions of China. Just like his family and friends, he saw China as a distant and mysterious place with a culture entirely different from France and other Western countries. The idea of visiting China first came to him when his uncle, who worked in China, returned with endless praise for the Chinese lifestyle. "Everything, from the food to the scenery, was incredibly appealing to me," he recalled.Later, a Chinese woman introduced him personally to the everyday life of Chinese people. He learned to use WeChat, Alipay, and navigating Chinese social media, which exposed him to a different way of living. The woman later became his wife, and they moved to Beijing together in 2022, which Jean-Baptiste described as "eye-opening" for him."She took me to see the flag-raising ceremony. Witnessing countless young people rushing toward the flag, I was deeply moved. It's a country of strength, unity, and love," he said. When Jean-Baptiste visited his wife's hometown for the first time, he couldn't speak much Chinese. While he was riding a bike, a group of relatives of his wife started shouting "waiguoren", which means "foreigner", and ran after him. He understood that this was their way of showing interest and hospitality."I felt their friendliness toward the French. Many, even those who spoke little English, would say 'welcome to China'. I felt the warmth of home in a foreign country and was thrilled to live in China," he said. All of these experiences made Jean-Baptiste eager to explore different aspects of Chinese culture. He visited the Great Wall in Beijing and the Terracotta Army in Xi'an, Northwest China's Shaanxi province. When he returned to France for vacation and shared photos of his travels and life in China with his family, they were also excited.Apart from his personal experiences in China, Jean-Baptiste noticed that friendly interactions between the two countries are also increasing. After learning about the 15-day visa-free travel from France to China, his family and friends couldn't wait to book their trip to China."I'm overjoyed to host them during the 60th anniversary of China-France diplomatic relations, showcasing China's modern development and rich history," he said. "I may be just an ordinary person with limited influence, but everyone can be a cultural ambassador."【生词速递】hospitality n. The idea of visiting China first came to him when his uncle, who workedin China, returned with endless praise for the Chinese lifestyle.

She was known around the world for using poetry to increase understanding of black culture in America. Her poems described conditions among the poor, racial inequality and drug use in the black community. She also wrote poems about the struggles of black women. But her skill was more than her ability to write about struggling black people. She was an expert in the language of poetry. She combined traditional European poetry styles with the African American experience. In her early poetry,Gwendolyn Brooks wrote about the South Side of Chicago. The South Side of Chicago is where many black people live. In her poems, the South Side is called Bronzeville. However,Kim,the world's first spider to learn a skill, needs no stimulus(刺激物)to do what she loves-jumping from different heights and distances-under the instruction of a teamof scientists from the University of Manchester. While the idea of training a spider might sound evil, the researchers' motives were purely scientific. They tried to unlock the secrets of the jumping spiders' extraordinarily high leaps to catch prey(猎物)or to escape their enemies. A better understanding of the spiders' leaps would help experts develop more efficient flying and jumping robots. The scientists found that Kim could gather enough force in her legs to jump more than six times the length of her own body from a stationary position. What was even more amazing was that she always landed perfectly. For shorter distances,Kim used a lot of energy, resulting in quick leaps, which the researchers believe probably increases her chances of catching fast-moving prey. For farther distance, less extra energy was used, resulting in slower but precise leaps.Previous studies have indicated that spiders use both their muscles and hydraulic (液压的)pressure—a mechanism by which blood is transferred to their extended legs-to push them off the ground. However,in Kim's case, her leg muscles alone appeared to be generating enough force for the leaps. The researchers now intend to do further research to comprehend fully not just the spiders' jumping techniques, but those of other insects as well. “We are familiar with robots that are aimed at taking over human functions, but there are millions of insects in the world that perform specific functions that we have interest in adapting to robotics,”says Nabawy, the leading engineer of the researching team.1. What is the purpose of scientists' researching into the jumping spider?A. To have fun and relax.B. To help develop robots.C. To get rid of spiders.D. To protect this species.2. Why did Kim use a lot of energy for short distances?A. To jump high enough.B. To land more precisely.C. To catch fast-moving prey.D. To increase chances of escape.3.

This raises the age-old questions when we use any technology: What abilities is our brain losing due to these apps? But also, importantly: What abilities are we gaining?Talking with people who are good at finding their ways around or good at using paper maps, I often hear a lot of complaints about digital maps. North and south get messed up, and you can see only a small section at a time. I can really understand that it may be quite disturbing for those who are already skilled at using paper maps but limited to a small phone screen. But consider what digital navigation aids have meant for someone like me. Although being a frequent traveller, I'm so terrible at finding my way that I still use Apple Maps almost every day in the small town where I have lived for many years. In many developed nations, street names and house numbers can be meaningful, and instructions such as go north for three blocks and then west make sense to those familiar with these rules. In Istanbul, however, where I grew up,none of those hold true. For one thing, the locals seldom use street names. Besides, the city is full of winding and ancient alleys(小巷)that cross with newer avenues at many angles. In such places, you'd better turn to the locals. In the countryside, however, there is often nobody outside to ask. In fact, using the navigation apps feels like a fairy grandmother whispering directions in my ear. Since then,I have travelled with a lot more confidence, and my world has opened up.This brings me back to my original questions:While we often lose some skills after depending on new technology, it may also allow us to gain new abilities. Maybe when technology closes a door, we should also look for the doors it opens.1.Why do people who are skilled at reading paper maps feel upset?A. They are interested in reading paper maps.B. However,if people fail to sort their garbage properly, they can be fined up to 200 yuan.More cities are introducing similar regulations, following the practice in Shanghai. By the end of 2020,garbage-sorting systems will have been built in 46 major Chinesecities, including Beijing and Shenzhen, reported People's Daily.According to a study by the Policy Research Centre for Environment and Economy, under the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, over 90 per cent of the public believe that garbage sorting is important for the protection of the environment. However, garbage sorting is still a big problem in China. Only 30 per cent of participants said they think they are adequately sorting their trash, the study noted.According to Xinhua News Agency, it's partly because many people lack the willingness to sort their own waste. In the past, some previous garbage regulations didn't impose clear fines on people who failed to sort garbage.“It's a must to have a legal guarantee to promote garbage sorting,"Liu Jianguo,a professor from Tsinghua University, told China Daily. In Japan, waste sorting has become a basic survival skill, reported Xinhua. There is a fixed time for disposal(处理)of each kind of garbage and littering can result in high fines and even jail time. When you're tired of online shopping, you head to the bathroom to do your best make-up for the perfect selfie(自拍照)for Facebook,Instagram,Snapchat or all of the above. When you're ready, you hold up your phone and,in an instant, snap(拍照).But have you ever wondered what's behind your burning desire to self-document?Most people would say that this is a way to express themselves and perhaps make them become more confident about themselves. But the moment you upload that picture,it's no longer yours to judge. Instead, you pass on that power to the online world. While you may think that your growing collection of selfies attracts people, quite the opposite may be true. A recent study was conducted on a total of 238 people in Austria,Germany and Switzerland.77%of the people surveyed admitted to regularly taking selfies. Interestingly, 82% of the people said that they would rather see fewer selfies on social media. In other words, we like taking selfies but seriously dislikelooking at other people's selfies online. This research finds that there is a big difference between how we see our own selfies and how we judge other people's pictures. It suggests that we are comfortable with the selfies we post since we believe they are obviously not artificial or vain, but we think everyone else is an egoist(自我主义者)for doing the very same thing. After all,we are able to separate our own selfies from the sea of them online and naturally think that ours are the only authentic ones. So,next time you reach for your phone and take a selfie, consider this: The people around you may not need another carefully planned snap of your face. Instead, you might be better off giving it a break and calling off the selfie today. While you're at it,make sure you never post these pictures on social media either.1.What is most people's idea on taking their own selfies according to the text?A. It's a good way to keep others informed of their life.B. It costs less money than shopping online for make-up.C. It's a way of self-expression and building confidence.D. It can help them keep a record of their daily routines.2. How do other people feel about our online selfies that we consider attractive?A. They actually take great interest in them.B. They envy our life after appreciating them.C. They are likely unwilling to see them online.D. They hardly make annoying reviews on them.3. Why do we regard others as egoists for taking selfies?A. They are not artificial but vain in nature.B. We don't think their selfies are authentic.C. We are too proud to acknowledge others.D. They hate getting their selfies polished.4. What is the last paragraph mainly about?A. Approaches to resisting taking selfies.B. Concerns over posting selfies online.C. Doubts about contradictory thoughts.D. Suggestions on dealing with selfies.刷7选5体裁:说明文题材:认识自我词数:238 难度:中建议用时:8分钟[西南联盟2021高三月考]Being attractive comes more from your personality than from your appearance. 1 To have an attractive personality, you should develop the ability to communicate, have confidence in yourself and develop a sense of humour. These qualities give you the ability to inspire and attract others, making others more drawn to you.2 Listening is a quality that is often forgotten about in today's society. Instead of responding to a text, opening an email,or thinking about your next meal, pay attention to what other people are saying. Show them you're listening and interested by commenting on the story or asking questions.Have confidence in how you speak and act. 3 Admit your mistake without being worried about what other people will think. Doing this shows that you have self-confidence. This helps create an attractive personality because it shows you're comfortable with yourself and that it makes others comfortable around you.Develop a sense of humour. If you do something silly, laugh at yourself instead of feeling embarrassed. It also shows that you're comfortable in your own skin. A sense of humour makes someone more engaging and delightful to be with. Remember that there is a time and a place for humour.4Know the difference between confidence and pride. While confidence is endearing, pride is very unpleasant.5 A great way to avoid this is to remind yourself to praise others. It will help you stay grounded.A. Be a good listener.B. Help others communicate.C. You should always say what you believe in.D. It shows them that you care and want to spread friendship.E. People will stay away from you if you're all about yourself.F. Don't ruin a serious conversation with inappropriate jokes.G. It is the key to making friends and having lasting relationships.刷完形填空体裁:记叙文题材:个人经历词数:285 难度:中建议用时:13分钟[豫西名校2021高二联考·改编]About a few years back starting from the fourth grade,I was in very low spirits for about four and a half years. 3-D Color X-Rays Might Help Reduce Diagnostic Surgery(诊断性手术)
Researchers in New Zealand have captured three-dimensional color Xrays of the human body(人体的三维彩色x射线). Using an innovative tool(创新性工具,新工具)that may eventually help diagnose cancers and blood diseases without invasive surgery(侵入式手术,开刀手术).
The new scanner has its origins in a tool that contributed to research into the universe’s fundamental particles(宇宙中的基本粒子) and functions much like a camera. It counts subatomic particles(亚粒子)as they meet pixels(像素)when its electronic shutter(电子快门)is open. That allows it to generate high-resolution (高分辨率的)images of soft tissues, including minute disease markers.
minute adj.
“We can make out details of various tissues, like bones, fats, water and cartilage(软骨), all functioning together inside the human system”said Anthony Butler, a radiologist 放射科的医生at Otago University in New Zealand, who developed the scanner with his father, Phil Butler, a physicist.
“It really is like the upgrade from black-and-white film胶卷to color. It’s a whole new X-ray experience.”
In traditional computed tomography计算机断层扫描, or CT scans, X-ray beams are measured after passing through human tissue. The resulting image appears white where dense bone tissue has absorbed the beams, and black where softer tissues have not.
dense adj.
The new scanner matches individual X-ray photon wavelengths 光子波长to specific materials, such as calcium. It then assigns a corresponding color to the scanned objects. The tool then translates the data into a three-dimensional image.
match ....to 把...
correspongding adj.
The researchers have generated images of ankles and wrists, but eventually plan to scan full human bodies.
The technology could contribute to advances in cancer drug development and to understanding heart disease and bone health. Its creators hope it will help doctors design personalized treatment plans involving targeted drug therapies or less invasive surgeries.
The new tool could serve as “a diagnostic road map to a destination,”according to Dr. Gary E. Friedlaender, an orthopedic surgeon骨科医生at Yale University who treats bone cancers found in complex locations such as inside the pelvis(骨盆).
orthopedic [,ɔ:θə'pi:dɪk] adj.
“It’s about being able to first find the explanation for somebody’s symptoms, like a
tumor, and then find the best way to reach it with the least amount of detours and misadventures, ”he said. “We want to minimize the damage to normal tissues.”
The device was adapted from友...改造而成a pixel-detecting tool 像素监测工具that physicists use at the Large Hadron Collider大型强子对撞机, the underground tunnel with a circumference 周长of nearly 17 miles at the European Organization for Nuclear Research 欧洲和研究组织, known as CERN. It was originally designed to track particles as they moves through the accelerator tube加速管.
“This is the beauty of it: Technology that was first intended for the field of high-energy physics 高能物理学is being used to improve society,”said Aurelie Pezous, an engineer at CERN who promotes outside application of the research center’s technologies. “It’s very exciting for CERN.”
A clinical trial 临床实验to test the new scanner will enroll orthopedic and rheumatology patients in New Zealand in upcoming months.
rheumatolog [,ruːmə'tɒlədʒɪ] 风湿病。
