窗户/ The WindowTwo men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour a day to drain the fluids from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation. And every afternoon when the man in the bed next to the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed would live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the outside world. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake, the man had said. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Lovers walked arm in arm amid flowers of every color of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene. One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man could not hear theband, he could see it in his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words. Unexpectedly, an alien thought entered his head: Why should he have all the pleasure of seeing everything while I never get to see anything? It didn’t seem f air. As the thought fermented, the man felt ashamed at first. But as the days passed and he missed seeing more sights, his envy eroded into resentment. He began to brood and found himself unable to sleep. He should be by that window - and that thought now controlled his life.Late one night, as he lay staring at the ceiling, the man by the window began to cough. He was choking on the fluid in his lungs. The other man watched in the dimly lit room as the struggling man by the window groped for the button to call for help. Listening from across the room, he never moved, never pushed his own button which would have brought the nurse running. In less than five minutes, the coughing and choking stopped, along with the sound of breathing. Now, there was only silence--deathly silence. The following morning, the nurse arrived to bring water for their baths. When she found the lifeless body of the man by the window, she was saddened and called the hospital attendant to take it away--no words, no fuss. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it all himself. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall.【助读词汇】◇drain vt. 排走◇fluid n. 流体◇on end连续地◇picturesque adj.

The principles about applying for jobs have altered greatly lately. In the past, people preferred a hand-written application letter. However, nowadays it is becoming more and more common to apply for a job through the Internet. You can find information on the Internet about how to apply for jobs. Information can be found about how to fulfill your application letter, the clothes that you should wear and how to carry out the interview itself. The importance of body language is often mentioned, but doesn‟t always get the attention it deserves. After all, before a word has ever been spoken, your body language will have already given people their first impression of you. Additionally, your body language will also give out a lot more information. Based on your body language it can be seen if you are self-confident. It can also show if you are a busy or a quiet type and it helps give an impression of whether you are speaking truthfully or not. Body language can show how enthusiastic you are and if you are a nice person, someone who will take his work seriously, but also someone who has a sense of humor and can enjoy a joke from time to time. The members of the application committee will ask youq uestions, but your answers won‟t only be oral. The committee will not only pay attention to what you say, but also to how you say it!Body language will determine first if it“clicks”, and sometimes all it takes is just a few seconds. Everybody uses body language, but it takes place mostly at a subconscious (下意识的)level. Using body language appropriately, you can definitely increase your chances of getting a job.1. What kind of people is the text mainly meant for?A. Interviewers.B. Job-hunting people.C. Employers.D. Lay-off workers.2. We can learn from the first paragraph that______.A. hand-written letters are not used in finding a jobB. the more expensive clothes interviewees wear, the betterC. body language is more important than spoken wordsD.

I WAS very late for school that morning, and I was terribly afraid of being scolded[责骂], especially as Monsieur[法语:先生] Hamel had told us that he should examine us on participles[分词], and I did not know the first thing about them. For a moment I thought of staying away from school and wandering about the fields. It was such a warm, lovely day. I could hear the blackbirds whistling on the edge of the wood, and in the Rippert field, behind the sawmill[锯木厂], the Prussians going through their drill. All that was much more tempting to me than the rules concerning participles; but I had the strength to resist, and I ran as fast as I could to school.

Mum pointed to a big chair by the door and I knew she wanted me to sit down. While I watched mouth open in surprise, Mum took off her hat and coat and gave them to me to hold. She walked quietly to the small room by the lift and took out a wet mop. She pushed the mop past the desk and as the nurse looked up, Mum nodded and said, “Very dirty floor.”“Yes. I’m glad they’ve finally decided to clean them,” the nurse answered. She looked at Mum strangely and said, “But aren’t you working later?”Mum just pushed harder, each swipe(拖一下) of the mop taking her farther and farther down the hall. I watched until she was out of sight and the nurse had turned back to writing in the big book. After a long time, Mum came back. Her eyes were shining. She quickly put the mop back and took my hand. As we turned to go out of the door, Mum bowed politely to the nurse and said, “Thank you.”Outside, Mum told me, “Dagmar is fine. No fever.”“You saw her, Mum?”“Of course. I told her about the hospital rules, and she will not expect us until tomorrow. Dad will stop worrying as well. It’s a fine hospital. But such floors! A mop is no good. A.to clean the floorB.to please the nurseC.to see a patientD.to surprise the story-teller2.After reading the story what can we infer about the hospital?A.It is a children’s hospital.B.It has strict rules about visiting hours.C.The conditions there aren’t very good.D.The nurse and doctors there don’t work hard.3.Which of the following words best describes Mum?A.Strange.B.Warm-hearted.C.Clever.D.Hard-working.One summer evening I was sitting by the open window, reading a good science story book. I was so interested in the story I was reading that I did not notice that it was getting dark. When I realized it was too dark for me to read easily, I put the book down and get up to turn on the light. Just then I heard someone crying: “Help! Help!” It seemed to come from the trees at the other end of the yard. I looked out but it was now too dark to see anything clearly. Almost immediately I heard the cry again. It sounded like a child, but I could not imagine what anybody would be doing in our backyard, unless one of the neighborhood children had climbed a tree and had not been able to get down.I decided that I ought to go out and have a look in the yard, just in case someone was in trouble. I got a flashlight and a stick, I thought it might be useful. Armed with these, I went out into the yard. Once again I heard the cry and this time there was no doubt that it came from the trees at the far end of the yard. “Who’s there?” I called out as I walked across the yard toward the trees. But there was no answer. With the help of my flashlight, I searched all over that end of the yard, including the branches of the trees. There was no sign of anybodyor anything. I came to the conclusion that my imagination was playing tricks to me, probably because of the story I was reading about strange creatures on another planet.Feeling rather foolish about hunting around in my own backyard with a baseball bat, I went back into the house and put the bat and flashlight away. I had just sat down to read my book again when I was frightened by the cry of “Help! Help!” This time from right behind me.I dropped my book and jumped up. Every Saturday he produces homemade bread. When he’s done, the whole house smells delicious. The rest of the week, Dad fixes cars at work. The shop where Dad works doesn’t have enough work, so he's under a lot of stress(压力). I think Dad began baking bread to help him relax.I’ve been feeling kind of stressed out myself since I found out I didn’t make the school swim team. Now I’ll have to wait a whole year to try out again. Plus, I’m taking some difficult classes this year.I think Dad knew 1 was feeling bad. Last Saturday he asked me how things were going.I said OK, even though I didn’t feel OK at all. He looked at me for a moment, and then he said it was time for me to help. Then he headed to the kitchen.I followed right behind him. Once we were there, Dad got out his big mixing bowl, handed me a large wooden spoon, and told me to mix while he added the ingredients(烹饪原料). Dad isn’t big on measuring, but he knows how much of each ingredient to use, and the bread always turns out great. When I finished stirring, Dad showed me how to knead the dough(揉面团). Next came the most difficult part—doing nothing. We put the dough back into the bowl and then we waited for more than an hour for the dough to slowly rise and double in size. Next, we divided it into two and waited for it to rise again. Afterward, we put the dough into pans and waited another hour for the dough to rise and double.Dad said the waiting is always the hardest part. “It’s hard to resist(抵制) putting the dough directly into the oven(烤箱), but if you do, the bread will be hard. There is no experience quite as lonely as living in a foreign country without a grasp of the language. Especially to make friends and to break that loneliness, it is the first and foremost goal toattain...always an uphill climb, while totally awkward!I was a trained English Language teacher, and while I lived abroad I did that work, and when we moved back to America I planned to continue it. The country’s financial difficulties at the time, however, saw deep cuts to the English as a second language in schools and to refugee language programs. So I simply took a job in a department store, at its Child Playroom. But this store was located near a major company that hired some of its workforce from many other countries. Often a preschooler in my playroom could not speak a word of English, and would look so lost and lonely! My heart flew to them! We interacted with each other a lot. We would play English language games and they would teach their language to me.Years later, when a small girl who had come from South America could speak good English, she said to me, “Teacher, remember when I called you Maestra?”Another child whose language was only Russian originally-we built a robot from blocks and fed it block food and learned English words that way-would come years afterwards and continue to play that same game! These moments became my life compass-due north is that place where when persons are different, Love Matters!13.What was the author’s challenge after marriage?A.She had to give up her job.B.She lost all her best friends.C.She needed to learn a new language.D.She was forced to live overseas.14.Why did the author change her job after she returned home?A.She set up her own company.B.She lost interest in teaching.C.Better teachers were needed.D.Teaching jobs were greatly reduced.15.Which word can best describe the author’s interactions with children?A.Tiring.B.Helpful.C.Simple.D.Humorous.二、七选五I'm often asked how to study English effectively. “My aunt will come down very soon, Mr. Nuttel,” said a very calm young lady of fifteen years of age; “meanwhile you must try to bear my company.”Framton Nuttel tried to say something which would please the niece now present, without annoying the aunt that was about to come. He was supposed to be going through a cure for his nerves; but he doubted whether these polite visits to a number of total strangers would help much.“I know how it will be,” his sister had said when he was preparing to go away into the country;“you will lose yourself down there and not speak to a living soul, and your nerves will be worse than ever through loneliness. I shall just give you letters of introduction to all the people I know there. Some of them, as far as I can remember, were quite nice.”“纳托先生,我姑妈很快就会下来”,说话人是一位十五岁的年轻小姐,看上去沉着自信,“现在我来陪您,请多包涵。

”Framton wondered whether Mrs. Sappleton, the lady to whom he was bringing one of the letters of introduction, one of the nice ones.“Do you know many of the people round here?”asked the niece, when she thought that they had sat long enough in silence.“Hardly one,” said Framton. “My sister was staying here, you know, about four years ago, and she gave me letters of introduction to some of the people here.”He made the last statement in a sad voice.

“Then you know almost nothing about my aunt?”continued the calm young lady.“Only her name and address;” Framton admitted. He was wondering whether Mrs. Sappleton was married; perhaps she had been married and her husband was dead. But there was something of a man in the room.“Her great sorrow came just three years ago,” said the child. “That would be after your sister’s time.“Her sorrow?”asked Framton. Somehow, in this restful country place, sorrows seemed far away.“那么您实际上对我姑妈是一无所知了?”

“You may wonder why we keep that window wide open on an October afternoon,” said the niece, pointing to a long window that opened like a door on to the grass outside.“It is quite warm for the time of the year,” said Framton; “but has that window got anything to do with your aunt’s sorrow?”“也许您会奇怪,为什么十月份的下午我们会将窗户大敞着,”那位小姐用手指着那扇宽敞的象扇门的落地窗说。

“今年的十月天气不是很凉,”弗雷顿回答,“不过你的意思是说,这扇窗户跟那场悲剧有什么关系吗?”“Out through that window, exactly three years ago, her husband and her two young brothers went off for their day’s shooting. They never came back. In crossing the country to the shooting-ground, they were all three swallowed in a bog. It had been that terrible wet summer, you know, and places that were safe in other years became suddenly dangerous. Their bodies were never found. That was the worst part of it.”Here the child’s voice lost its calm sound and became almost human.“Poor aunt always thinks that they will come back someday, they and the little brown dog that was lost with them, and walk in at that window just as they used to do. That is why the window is kept open every evening till it is quite dark. Poor dear aunt, she has often told me how they went out, her husband with his white coat over his arm, and Ronnie, her youngest brother, singing a song, as he always did to annoy her, because she said it affected her nerves. Do you know, sometimes on quiet evenings like this, I almost get a strange feeling that they will all walk in through the window ??”“三年前的今天,她的丈夫和两个弟弟,就是穿过那扇窗户去打猎,但是一去无返。

”She stopped and trembled. It was a relief to Framton when the aunt came busily into the room and apologized for being late.“I hope Vera has been amusing you?” she said.“She has been very interesting,” said Framton.“I hope you don’t mind the open window,”said Mrs. Sappleton brightly; “my husband and brothers will be home soon from shooting, and they always come in this way. They’ve been shooting birds today near the bog, so they’ll make my poor carpets dirty. All you men do that sort of thing, don’t you?
