These people are willing to risk(冒…危险)being killed by floods or 100-kilometer-an-hour winds for the excitement of watching the storm close up.“Storm chasing(追逐)” is becoming an increasingly popular hobby(喜好), especially in the Midwest of the United States, where there are frepuent storms between March and July. A storm chaser begins the day by checking the Internet for the latest weather reports, and then drives up to 1,000 kilometers to where the storm will be and wits for it to develop.Although anyone can do it , storm chasing is extremely dangerous. The power of a big storm can throw a cow into the air or destroy a whole house in seconds. Storm chasers are also often hurt in accidents caused by driving in a heavy rain. If you are a beginner, it is much safer to join a group for storm-chasing vacations during the storm season.Even then, storm chasing is not all adventure and excitement . “Storm chasing is 95% driving,” says Daniel Lynch, who spends most of his summer storm-chasing. “Sometimes you can sit around for hours waiting for something to happen, and all you get is blue sky and a few light showers.”However, for storm chasers, it is all worth it. “When you get close to a storm, it is the most exciting sight you will ever see in your life,”says Jasper Morley. “Every storm is an example of the power of nature, It is the greatest show on Earth.”56. Humans are naturally wired to sleep best at night and be awake during the day. However, modern work schedules require some people to try to accommodate the unnatural schedule of shift(轮班)work — being awake at night and sleeping during the day.In order to make this adjustment, you need to pay special attention to your sleep environment and your preparation for sleep. If shift work is a necessary part of your work life, here are some suggestions that may help.Arrange to sleep uninterrupted in a quiet, dark room. This means you may have to turn off or unplug your phone, hang darkening curtains on the windows or wear a sleep eye mask, and train your family and friends to leave you alone while you sleep.Fit in a nap(小睡). When your daytime sleep period is too short, taking a short nap of less than 30 minutes just before work or on a break has been shown to improve alertness and enhance performance.Develop and follow a sleep routine. Its best if you go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day. Try not to vary this too much on weekends. Your body likes routine.Take extra care to make healthy choices. You may be tempted to reach for unhealthy foods or nicotine to stay awake or alcohol to try to sleep. But ultimately these choices are more harmful than helpful. If you have tried all these things and are still having problems getting enough quality sleep during the day, talk to your doctor or a sleep specialist. Sometimes medications(药物治疗)may be helpful and safe. In other cases, there may be an underlying sleep disorder that needs to be addressed.72.The purpose of the text is to .A.persuade workers to have a god sleep.B.advise night workers to keep healthyC.encourage workers to do day workD.help night workers to sleep well73.What does the author recomusend?A.A suitable account of alcohol to help sleep.B.A regular life on weekdays and weekends.C.A dark room without phoebes to sleep in.D.A break for sleeping anytime during the day.74.On which condition should a person turn to a sleep specialist for help?A.If he suffers from a sleep disorder for the first time.B.If a good sleep environment is greatly needed for him.C.If he falls to get quality sleep through his own efforts.D.If he has the problem of bailing to sleep in the daytime.75.We can learn from the test that .A.night workers need a long time to fall asleepB.constant breaks at work help to improve performanceC.it is difficult to create a good sleep environmentD.night work requires people to adjust their body clocks英语阅读理解强化训练参考答案:72—75 DBCD。

初三年级英语复习教案(二):阅读理解技巧训练

初三年级英语复习教案(二):阅读理解技巧训练Reading comprehension is a key skill in the study of English language. Many students find it challenging to grasp the main idea and meaning of a passage, which consequently hampers their overall academic performance. Therefore, the objective of this teaching plan is to provide students with essential reading comprehension techniques to equip them with the necessary skills for tackling this section of the English test. The teaching plan comprises four sessions, each focusing on different techniques to improve reading comprehension. The ultimate goal is to enable students to read efficiently, comprehend the main ideas of texts, and answer questions accurately within the allocated time. The techniques covered will enable students to adopt a strategic approach when tackling reading comprehension questions and avoid common pitfalls that undermine academic success.Session one: Scanning and skimmingScanning is a technique that involves quickly glancing through a text to locate specific words or phrases. Skimming, on the other hand, entails reading a text quickly to identifythe main ideas without necessarily reading every word. Both techniques save time and enable students to identify critical information faster, which is essential in answering questions correctly. The teacher should provide students with a text and ask them to practice scanning and skimming by finding specific information or identifying the main ideas of the text. Afterward, the teacher should provide questions to measure the students' comprehension of the text based on the scanning and skimming activities.Session two: Understanding vocabulary in contextMany students struggle with vocabulary in reading comprehension questions. Most times, they misinterpret the meanings of words, thus affecting their overall comprehension of a passage. Therefore, understanding vocabulary in context is essential in improving overall reading comprehension. The teacher should teach students how to use sentence and paragraph context clues to deduce the meanings of words. Furthermore, the teacher should instruct students to use the surrounding words to make educated guesses about the meaning of an unfamiliar word. The teacher should provide students with a text with unfamiliar words and ask them to deduce their meanings byusing context clues. Afterward, the teacher should provide questions to measure the students' comprehension of the text based on the unfamiliar words.Session three: Identifying text structureText structure refers to how information in a passage is organized. Knowing the structure of a text enables studentsto identify relationships between ideas and understand the context better. Therefore, the teacher should teach students how to identify different text structures such as cause and effect, problem and solution, and compare and contrast. Afterward, the teacher should provide students with a textand ask them to identify the text structure used. The teacher should then provide questions that measurethe students' comprehension of the text based on theidentified text structure.Session four: Making inferences and predictionsMaking inferences involves using context clues and prior knowledge to draw conclusions about what is implied in a text, rather than what is explicitly stated. Predicting, on the other hand, is using prior knowledge and clues to make an educated guess about what will happen next in a text. The teacher should teach students how to use context clues to infer meaning from the text and make predictions based on the information provided. The teacher should provide students with a text and ask them to make inferences and predictions from the text. Afterward, the teacher should provide questions that measure the students' comprehension of the text based on their inferences and predictions.ConclusionIn conclusion, reading comprehension is a critical skill in the study of English Language, and the techniques covered in this teaching plan are essential in improving overall academic performance. The teacher should plan each session with essential teachable points, provide learning materials such as texts, passage questions, and grammar rules, and allow students to practice the techniques independently. By doing so, students will be better equipped with the necessary skills needed to tackle reading comprehension tests successfully.。

He knows this all too well. Several years ago, when he and his business partner, Enrique Fernandez, witnessed (目睹)a woman drowning, they tried to help her, but it was too late. This made Adrian very sad. Now, Adrian is the boss of General Drones, a company he founded with Enrique, whose work was making drones. The two worked together to create a search-and-rescue drone that can help prevent drowning. If lifeguards notice a person in distress in the water, they can notify (通知) a drone pilot, who's also at the beach and can send the drone out directly to the person. The pilot locates the person with the help of a camera the drone has, which can reach him/her in just a few seconds.“This is important,”says Adrian.“Because ▲.”The drone then drops a life vest to the person. The life vest goes around the person and fills up with air so they can float (漂浮). By staying above the person, the drone helps the lifeguard quickly locate the person who is struggling in the water.Adrian and Enrique started working on this project in 2015. It took a long time because they had to design it specifically for the beach. The beach can be hard for machines because of the sun, wind and water. To date, their drones have helped in more than 60 emergencies at 22 beaches in Spain. Adrian hopes that more people will help him so they can expand their services in other countries too.1.According to the passage, most drownings happen_ ______.A. quickly without soundB. loudly with lots of movementC. slowly with much noiseD. slowly with lots of movement2.What might inspire Adrian Plazas to start General Drones?A. His experience as a lifeguard.B. His interest in drone technology.C.His dream to prevent drownings.D. His friendship with Enrique Fernandez.3.Which of the following can be put into in Paragraph 5?A. the lifeguards are trained wellB. the lifeguards have more time to arriveC. the lifeguards play an important roleD. the lifeguards knew water safety well4.The underlined word “expand”in the last paragraph means“______”.A.talk moreB. add detailsC. make a planD.make widerBWe can make mistakes at any age. And most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke my leg?” “When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it’s too late.① Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. ① Suppose someone tells you, “You’re a lucky dog.” That’s being friendly. ① But “lucky dog”? There’s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the “dog” bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck. ①“Just think of all the things you should be thankful for” is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got the new bike you want. How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say may save another mistake.( )1. Where can we put the sentence “And if we don’t really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words.”?A. ①B. ①C. ①D. ①( )2. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?A. Being friendly.B. A bit of envy.C. Lucky dog.D. Your luck.( )3. Why does the writer think we go wrong about the speakers?A. We don’t listen carefully when they talk.B. They aren’t able to express their meaning clearly.C. They usually state one thing but mean another.D. We often doubt whether they mean what they say. ( )4. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the passage?A. Can you tell their real meanings?B. I’m a real lucky dog.C. Maybe he’s not a true friend.D. Speaking clearly saves you more mistakes.CAbout 2000 years ago, V olcano Vesuvius erupted (火山喷发), destroying the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Now scientists are working to decode (破译) one of the great mysteries of that time --- the scrolls of Herculaneum(赫库兰尼姆卷轴).In 1752, workers digging in Herculaneum discovered over 600 scrolls. Most of them were made from papyrus --- a paper-like material. The heat from the volcano had burned the scrolls so much that they looked like chunks of charcoal (木碳块). The scrolls were so fragile that just touching them could make them fall apart. So scientists have been looking for ways to read the scrolls without opening them.Brent Seales, a computer scientist at the University of Kentucky has been working on this for over 20 years. He developed a method of using a CT scanner to take 3D X-ray images of a papyrus scroll. In 2016,his team used this method to read a burned scroll found near the Dead Sea. But the scrolls from Herculaneum are much harder. This method didn't work well. Still, Dr. Seales hoped to decode them and trained an AI program. Though he was making progress, it was slow going. Then he met with two businessmen. They had the idea of holding a competition for decoding the scrolls. The competition offered large prizes. About 1,500 people have taken part in it. These people are sharinginformation as they make progress, so everyone can build on those ideas. In August, 2023, Casey Handmer found a pattern that showed where the ink had been on the scrolls.Following his lead, Luke Farritor, a 21-year-old student, created an AI program that found a whole word:“πopφúραc” which means“purple”. This was the first word ever read from these ancient scrolls. Soon afterward, Youssef Nader used a different method to find the same word. For their efforts, Mr.Handmer and Mr. Nader each won $10,000. Mr. Farritor won $40,000.Now people are working to earn the competition's $700,000 top prize, which is for decoding four longer sections of the scroll. “With all the recent progress, it's likely that someone will win this prize, too. For me, reading words from within the Herculaneum scrolls is like stepping onto the moon,”Dr. Seales says.“Now it is time to explore.”( )1. What does the underlined word “fragile” mean in paragraph 2?A. Easy to open.B. Hard to break.C. Easy to break.D. Hard to open. ( )2.What can we learn about the scrolls of Herculaneum?A. They were easy to read.B. They were once burned by fire.C. They were all made from papyrus.D. But new research suggests that women who regularly consume moderate amounts of alcohol are less likely to gain weight than nondrinkers and are at lower risk for obesity (fatness). The findings, reported this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine, are based on a study of 19,220 United States women aged 30 to 40 who fall into the “normal weight” based on their body mass index. Researchers at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston tracked the womens drinking habits over 13 years. About 60 percent of the women were light or regular drinkers, while about 40 percent reported drinking no alcohol.Over the course of the study, 41 percent of the women became overweight. Although alcohol is packed with calories, the nondrinkers in the study actually gained more weight over time: nine pounds, on average, compared with an average gain of about three pounds among regular moderate drinkers. The risk of becoming overweight was almost 30 percent lower for women who consumed one or two alcohol drinks a day, compared with nondrinkers. The findings are certain to be confusing for women who continue to receive conflicting messages about the health benefits and risks ofalcohol. Although moderate drinking is associated with better heart health, regular drinking also increases breast cancer risk. The trend toward less weight gain among drinkers doesnt appear to hold true for men. A 2003 study of British men showed that regular drinkers gained more weight than nondrinkers. Studies suggest that drinking alcohol has different effects on eating habits among men and women. Men typically add alcohol to their daily caloric intake, whereas women are more likely to substitute(替代)alcohol for food. In addition, there may be differences in how men and women metabolize(代谢)alcohol. Metabolic studies show that after men drink alcohol, they experience little if any metabolic change. But alcohol appears to slightly speed up a womans metabolism. The findings dont mean women should rush to drink alcohol to lose weight. Other research shows that once a person is already overweight, her alcohol metabolism is more efficient, and so an overweight woman may gain more weight from alcohol than a lean woman. The data do, however, suggest that for many women facing weight problems, the extra calories are probably not coming from alcoholic drinks.41. According to the study, which of the following regular drinker is less likely to gain weight than nondrinkers?A B C D42. That men regular drinkers gained more weight than women regular drinkers is due to the following except ______.A. Women are more likely to substitute alcohol for food.B. On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power. One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forward-looking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more accurate records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock (家畜) to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Many computer companies have been developing special computer programs just for farmers. Programs are being written for pig producers, grain farmers, potato farmers, and dairy farmers. In the future, farmers will be able to purchase computer programs made to their needs. Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the old-time farm depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power.Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real “mechanized hired hand” that will be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being. Agricultural engineers believe that computer-aided robots will make shocking changes in farming before the end of the century. Unlike farmers of the present, farmers of the future will find that many day-to-day tasks will be done for them. Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear (修剪) sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit. Even complex jobs will be done by robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when they are finished. In the future, this will all be done by robots. In addition, when the milking is completed, the robots will automatically check to make sure that the milk is pure. The complete change of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long.48. According to the passage, computers can not help farmers decide _______.A. how much money they can earn from their productsB. whether to plant a certain kind of cropC. what livestock to raiseD. when to sell their products49. Which of the following statements is true?A. Farmers in the future will depend totally on computers.B. Farmers mainly use machines on their farms at present.C. Both computers and robots have been in use on todays farms.D. Students at agricultural colleges neednt take their normal agricultural courses.50.What is the best title for the whole passage?A. Computer, Farmers Best FriendB. Farmers in The FutureC. The Agricultural RevolutionD. Computers and Robots答案:48.C. 细节理解题。

What do we mean by “culture?” Lately social scientists have begun to ask if culture is found just in humans, or if some animals have a culture too. When we speak of culture, we mean a way of life a group of people have in common. Culture includes the beliefs and attitudes we learn. It is the patterns of behavior that help people to live together. It is also the patterns of behavior that make one group of people different from another group. Our culture lets us make up for having lost out strength, claws, long teeth, and other defenses. Instead we use tools, cooperate with one another, and communicate with language. But these aspects of human behavior, or “culture,” can also be foundin the lives of certain animals. Animals can make tools, for example. We used to think that the ability to use tools was the dividing line between human beings and other animals. Lately, however, we have found that this is not the case. Chimpanzees(非洲小猩猩) can not only use tools but actually make tools themselves. Animals can also share knowledge with each other and use their own language to communicate.
