The story in this movie happened in 1959, it’s the time of cold war. Mccarthyism had just been eliminated. But the conservation still prevail in the U.S.A. At that time, the traditionist and the Libertarian had a fierce battle. The traditionist thought that there should not have the radical revolution. They emphasize on the importance of experiences and historical tradition. In their mind, only the old tradition which have been tested so many years can be accepted. But in the libertarian’s mind, the real freedom means you can pursue what you want. They didn’t want become the slave of tradition. They prefer the social Darwinism, the survival of the fittest, old can not always be the right.
• John Keating---Robern Williams
Robert L. Williams (born March 2, 1943) is an American painter, cartoonist, and founder of Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine. Williams was one of the group of artists who produced Zap Comix, along with other underground cartoonists, such as Robert Crumb, S. Clay Wilson, and Gilbert Shelton. His mix of California car culture, cinematic apocalypticism, and film noir helped to create a new genre of psychedelic imagery.
Neil Perry---Robert Sean Leonard Robert Lawrence Leonard (born February 28, 1969), better known by his stage name Robert Sean Leonard, is an American actor. He is known for playing Dr. James Wilson in the television series House (2004–2012) and Neil Perry in the film Dead Poets Society. Leonard won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his performance in The Invention of Love in 2001.
The movie was shoot in 1989, 2 years after the stock market crash happened in 1987 the U.S.A. People during this time prefer to have a carpe diem time. It may be the reason why Mr`Keating said seizing the day. It was a hard time and people want some breakthrough. And this may be the spirit want to show in the movie.

In the movie, the name Walt Whiteman was mentioned several times. The must famous words in this movie—Oh captain, my captain”—was his poem. Uncle Walt, this is what Mr`Keating call the great Walt Whiteman.
• From the very beginning of film, there's the scene of the headmaster preside over a ceremony, which shows an absolute authority of teachers over students and such authority runs through the whole film. • “Tradition.Honour.Discipline.Excellence.” are deemed as four pillars of teaching principles by the teachers.Ironically, it was described as “ Travesty. Horror. Decadence. Excrement. ” by the students. • The conflicts beween students and teachers reside in the lack of equility and understanding of teachers to students.
The inspiration of this movie comes from James Hilton novel good bye Mr`Chips. It`s a really story of Thomas Schuman, the script writer of this movie, when he studied in the preparatory school Montgomery Bell. His English teacher Samuel is the prototype of Mr`Keatin.
The best generation still existed in the 1950s, it’s a new schools of literature. During that time most writers intentionally avoided the political and social problems. They just boost the political system blindly. The new generation can not bear the sight of this. So they began to challenge the old tradition.
