IMMEDIATE CAUSE
• Poland is located in the eastern part of Europe, on the east of Russia, on the west of Germany, on the north of Czechoslovakia(捷克斯洛伐克). And its northern boundary is near the Baltic Sea. Because of its special geographical position, Poland becomes the transportation hub of Europe, which owns a strategic importance. Poland was one of the most powerful military forces among the European allies. If Germany occupied Poland, Germany not only had access to a large number of military and economic resources, but also greatly improved its strategic position: it not only could eliminate the worries of the British and French attack, but also to establish a base for attacks on the Soviet Union.

Defenders
• Winston Churchill kept dangerous warning of the Nazi in pre-war years, and he was elected prime minister of Great Britain after the total collapse of the appeasement policy of his predecessor Neville Chamberlain At those very difficult and dangerous times, Churchill, "the British Lion", excelled as a wartime leader. • Joseph Stalin was the very brutal Communist dictator of Russia (1928-1953). Before the World War Ⅱ , Stalin murdered or imprisoned almost all of Russia's senior military officers, and millions of other Russian citizens, in a paranoid and unprecedented wave of political terror.
The rise of fascism: From 1922 to 1925, the Italian Fascist movement seized power in Italy . With the onset of the Great Depression, Nazi Party a fascist government in Germany.

Course of the war
The start of the war is generally held to be 1 September 1939, beginning with the German invasion of Poland; Britain and France declared war on Germany two days later. Other dates for the beginning of war include the Japanese invasion of Manchuria on 13 September 1931; the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War on 7 July 1937. The exact date of the war's end is not universally agreed upon. It has been suggested that the war ended at the armistice of 14 August 1945 rather than the formal surrender of Japan 2 September 1945; in some European histories, it ended on 8 May 1945. The Treaty of Peace with Japan was not signed until 1951 .
The consequences of World War I: under the Treaty of Versailles, Germany lost around 13 percent of its home territory and all of its overseas colonies, massive reparations were imposed, and limits were placed on the size.
