• It is known in Mandarin Chinese（普通 话） as the qí páo in Beijing and Shanghai .
The origin（起源）
The Cheongsam （旗袍）came from the Manchus （满族人）who grew out of（产生于 ） ancient Nuzhen tribes（女真部落）. • In the early 17th century, Nurhachi（努尔哈赤 ）, a great political and military strategist, unified the various Nuzhen tribes and set up the Eight Banners System（八旗制度）. Over the years, a collarless（无领）, tube－ shaped gown was developed, which was worn by both men and women. That is the embryo （萌芽）of the Qipao. The dress is called Qipao in Chinese or translated as “banner gown（旗服）", for it came from the people who lived under the Banner System.

There was a little girl named Lily. One day, her mother took her to a traditional Chinese performance. There, many dancers were wearing Qipao. Lily was amazed by how beautiful they looked. The Qipao on them were of different colors. Some were bright red, like the color of a ripe apple. Red Qipao makes people look full of energy and very festive. There were also blue ones, like the clear sky on a sunny day. The dancers in blue Qipao moved gracefully, as if they were floating in the air.The fabric of Qipao can be very soft. It feels like touching a cloud or a soft kitten. Some Qipao are made of silk. Silk is a very special material. It has a shiny surface. When the light shines on it, it looks like thereare little stars on the Qipao.Qipao also has different patterns. Some have beautiful flowers printed on them. For example, peonies. Peonies are very big and colorful flowers in China. When they are printed on Qipao, it seems like the peonies are blooming on the clothes. There are also Qipao with small butterflies as patterns. The butterflies seem to be flying around the person wearing the Qipao.In old China, many women liked to wear Qipao. They would wear it when they went to parties or important events. After the Opium War(鸦片战争), the wide and loose body had gradually become short and narrow. In 1919, the Ordinance（法 令） about garments was announced by the National Government and cheongsam was established to be the national garments.
