American Gothic
American Gothic is a painting by Grant Wood from 1930. Its inspiration came from a cottage designed in the Gothic Revival style with a distinctive upper window and a decision to paint the house along with “the kind of people I fancied should live in that house.” The painting shows a farmer standing beside a woman whose identity remains ambiguous(引起歧义的); she may either be his spinster(未婚) daughter, as explained by the artist‘s sister, or the farmer’s wife. The figures were modeled by the artist‘s dentist and sister. The woman is dressed in a colonial print apron mimicking 19th century Americana and the couple are in the traditional roles of men and women, the man’s pitchfork(长柄草耙) symbolizing hard labor, and the flowers over the woman‘s right shoulder suggesting domesticity(n.对家庭的挚爱). It is one of the most familiar images in 20th century American art and one of the most parodied(拙劣的模仿) artworks within American popular culture.

Perhaps the most famous name in doll-making history, Barbie has delighted children since 1959, and has become a magnet for doll collectors. The idea for Barbie originated when Ruth Handler, part owner of the Mattel company with her husband Elliot and family friend Harold Mattson, noticed that her daughter, Barbara, enjoyed playing with adult female dolls more than with baby dolls. She decided, therefore, to create a doll that would allow young girls to envision (想象) what they might become as they grew older. Her creation, named in honor of daughter Barbara and backed by Mattel, debuted(首次登台) at the American Toy Fair in New York City in 1959. Although Mattel had been hesitant to risk producing the Barbie doll, Barbie set a new sales record for Mattel after the first year on the market. At a cost of three dollars each, Mattel sold 351,000 dolls during the first year of production, and within ten years, the public had purchased $500 million worth of Barbie products.
