1. What do you think is the relationship between money and happiness?
In my opinion, money doesn’t necessarily bring happiness. There are lots of rich people in the world who live unhappy lives. Happiness is just a state of mind, and it mainly depends on how you look at people and things. However, having money sometimes does make us feel a little happier because it can help us to gain what we want more easily.

Perhaps the most famous name in doll-making history, Barbie has delighted children since 1959, and has become a magnet for doll collectors. The idea for Barbie originated when Ruth Handler, part owner of the Mattel company with her husband Elliot and family friend Harold Mattson, noticed that her daughter, Barbara, enjoyed playing with adult female dolls more than with baby dolls. She decided, therefore, to create a doll that would allow young girls to envision (想象) what they might become as they grew older. Her creation, named in honor of daughter Barbara and backed by Mattel, debuted(首次登台) at the American Toy Fair in New York City in 1959. Although Mattel had been hesitant to risk producing the Barbie doll, Barbie set a new sales record for Mattel after the first year on the market. At a cost of three dollars each, Mattel sold 351,000 dolls during the first year of production, and within ten years, the public had purchased $500 million worth of Barbie products.

American Gothic
American Gothic is a painting by Grant Wood from 1930. Its inspiration came from a cottage designed in the Gothic Revival style with a distinctive upper window and a decision to paint the house along with “the kind of people I fancied should live in that house.” The painting shows a farmer standing beside a woman whose identity remains ambiguous(引起歧义的); she may either be his spinster(未婚) daughter, as explained by the artist‘s sister, or the farmer’s wife. The figures were modeled by the artist‘s dentist and sister. The woman is dressed in a colonial print apron mimicking 19th century Americana and the couple are in the traditional roles of men and women, the man’s pitchfork(长柄草耙) symbolizing hard labor, and the flowers over the woman‘s right shoulder suggesting domesticity(n.对家庭的挚爱). It is one of the most familiar images in 20th century American art and one of the most parodied(拙劣的模仿) artworks within American popular culture.

The Buffalo nickel also known as the Indian Head nickel was a five cent piece struck by the U.S. Mint from 1913 to 1938. The front, or obverse, of the coin features the right profile of an American Indian, and the back, or reverse, of the coin shows an American bison(北美野牛) or buffalo. The buffalo nickel was designed by sculptor(雕刻家) James Earle Fraser, and proved to be subject to wear. The dates below the Indian head easily wore off in circulation. In 1938, after 25 years, the U.S. Mint replaced the Buffalo nickel with the Jefferson nickel.
