⼤学英语三模拟题东华⼤学20__-20__学年第__学期期末试题踏实学习,弘扬正⽓;诚信做⼈,诚实考试;作弊可耻,后果⾃负College English Achievement TestBand 3(易班)Part I Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) (10%)Directions: In this part, there is a passage followed by ten statements. You will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and decide whether each of the statements is true or false, or that the information is not given in the passage. Then mark the answer on the Answer Sheet.Renewable EnergyHow does energy use affect the environment? All forms of electricity generation have some level of environmental impact. However, clean energy technologies, including renewable energy and combined heat and power, have fewer impacts than other sources of electricity generation. To learn about the environmental impacts of electricity generation technologies, click on an energy source below. How clean is the electricity I use?In the United States, electricity is generated in many different ways, with a wide variation in environmental impact. Traditional methods of electricity production contribute to air quality problems and the risk of global climate change. With the advent of electric customer choice, many electricity customers can now choose the source of their electricity. In fact, you might now have the option of choosing cleaner, more environmentally friendly sources of energy. How can I make a difference? The energy decisions we make every day can encourage the development of new power sources, save natural resources, and help ensure that the quality of our environment is preserved. In many parts of the country, consumers now have the opportunity to choose the source of the power that is delivered to their home or business—including energy derived from renewable sources. "Renewable energy" generally refers to electricity supplied from renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power (energy supplied by the sun), geothermal (energy created from the extreme heat contained in liquid rock—called magma(岩浆)—within the Earth's core), hydropower (energy derived from the movement of water as it flows downstream), and various forms of biomass (fuel from sources such as trees, wood and agricultural wastes and fuel crops). These energy sources are considered renewable because they are continuously replenished on the Earth. In addition, mobile sources of air pollution—such as cars, trucks, trains and lawnmowers—also contribute to air pollution nationwide and are an important source of air pollution in many urban areas.Hydrogen EnergyUsing hydrogen energy could help address many concerns facing our nation and our world. We believe hydrogen can contribute to resolving these issues for these reasons:Firstly, hydrogen can be made from a variety of domestic feedstocks like water, biomass, coal and natural gas.Second, hydrogen is non-toxic(⽆毒的), non-poisonous and will not contribute to groundwater pollution. It does not create "fumes" or other harmful emissions; in fact, using hydrogen in fuel cells produces only electricity and pure water.Furthermore, hydrogen is a key enabler for the development and more widespread implementation of renewable energy technologies, resulting in cleaner and more efficient products in the marketplace.Fifty million tons of hydrogen is produced each year worldwide, with nine million tons being consumed in the U.S. The challenge is to bring hydrogen into the everyday lives of customers as they begin to use hydrogen-powered vehicles and other applications.Geothermal EnergyOur earth's interior—like the sun—provides heat energy from nature. This heat—geothermal energy—yields warmth and power that we can use without polluting the environment. Geothermal heat originates from Earth's fiery consolidation of dust and gas over 4 billion years ago. At earth's core—4,000 miles deep—temperatures may reach over 9,000 degrees F.Solar EnergySunlight, or solar energy, can be used directly for heating and lighting homes and other buildings, for generating electricity, and for hot water heating, solar cooling, and a variety of commercial and industrial uses. After the 1973 oil embargo(禁运), there was a resurgence(复苏,波动再起)of interest in solar energy. Faced with a possibility of scarce oil resources, the United States government allocated $400 million per year, from a mere $1 million per year, for solar energy research. The expenditure is small compared to the expenditure on nuclear research. Currently, there is a need for allocating increased resources in solar research. Compared to the old forms of reducible energy (coal, oil, nuclear), solar energy offers a clean renewable form of energy. This presentation will provide an overview of the past, present and future of solar energy.Wind EnergyWe have been harnessing the wind's energy for hundreds of years. From old Holland to farms in the United States, windmills have been used for pumping water or grinding grain. Today, the windmill's modern equivalent—a wind turbine(涡轮机)—can use the wind's energy to generate electricity.Wind turbines, like windmills, are mounted on a tower to capture the most energy. At 100 feet (30 meters) or more aboveground, they can take advantage of the faster and less turbulent wind. Turbines catch the wind's energy with their propeller-like blades. Usually, two or three blades are mounted on a shaft to form a rotor(旋转部分,旋转器).A blade acts much like an airplane wing. When the wind blows, a pocket of low-pressure air forms on the downwind side of the blade. The low-pressure air pocket then pulls the blade toward it, causing the rotor to turn. This is called lift. The force of the lift is actually much stronger than the wind's force against the front side of the blade, which is called drag. The combination of lift and drag causes the rotor to spin like a propeller, and the turning shaft spins a generator to make electricity.Wind turbines can be used as stand-alone applications, or they can be connected to a utility power grid(蓄电池电极板)or even combined with a photovoltaic(光电的)(solar cell) system. For utility-scale sources of wind energy, a large number of wind turbines are usually built closetogether to form a wind plant. Several electricity providers today use wind plants to supply power to their customers. Ocean Energy BasicsThe ocean can produce two types of energy: thermal energy from the sun's heat, and mechanical energy from the tides and waves.Oceans cover more than 70% of Earth's surface, making them the world's largest solar collectors. The sun's heat warms the surface water a lot more than the deep ocean water, and this temperature difference creates thermal energy. Just a small portion of the heat trapped in the ocean could power the world.Ocean thermal energy is used for many applications, including electricity generation. There are three types of electricity conversion systems: closed-cycle, open-cycle, and hybrid(混合的). Closed-cycle systems use the ocean's warm surface water to vaporize a working fluid, which has a low-boiling point, such as ammonia(氨). The vapor expands and turns a turbine. The turbine then activates a generator to produce electricity. Open-cycle systems actually boil the seawater by operating at low pressures. This produces steam that passes through a turbine/generator. And hybrid systems combine both closed-cycle and open-cycle systems.Ocean mechanical energy is quite different from ocean thermal energy. Even though the sun affects all ocean activities, tides are driven primarily by the gravitational pull of the moon, and waves are driven primarily by the winds. As a result, tides and waves are intermittent(间歇的,断断续续的)sources of energy, while ocean thermal energy is fairly constant. Also, unlike thermal energy, the electricity conversion of both tidal and wave energy usually involves mechanical devices.1.Renewable energy has no environmental impact.a. True.b. False.c. Reading Comprehension. (2 points for each, altogether 20 points)Directions: There are 2 passages followed by questions. Beneath each question there arejz*four choices respectively marked by letters A, B, C and D. Choose the right answer for each question. Write your answers on the answer sheet.Passage One Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. In cities with rent control, the city government sets the maximum rent that a landlord can charge for an apartment. Supporters of rent control argue that it protects people who are living in apartments. Their rent cannot increase; therefore, they are not in danger of losing their homes. However, the critics say that after a long time, rent control may have negative effects. Landlords know that they cannot increase their profits. Therefore, they invest in other businesses where they can increase their profits. They do not invest in new buildings which would also be rent-controlled. As a result, new apartments are not built. Many people who need apartments cannot find any. According to the critics, the end result of rent control is a shortage of apartments in the city. Some theorists argue that the minimum wage law can cause problems in the same way. The federal government sets the minimum that an employer must pay workers. The minimum helps people who generally look for unskilled, low-paying jobs. However, if the minimum is high, employers may hire fewer workers. They will replace workers with machinery. The price, which is the wage that employers must pay, increases. Therefore, other things being equal, the number of workers that employers want decreases. Thus, critics claim, an increase in the minimum wage may cause unemployment. Some poor people may find themselves without jobs instead of with jobs at the minimum wage.Supporters of the minimum wage say that it helps people keep their dignity. Because of the law, workers cannot sell their services for less than the minimum. Furthermore, employers cannot force workers to accept jobs at unfair wages.Economic theory predicts the results of economic decisions such as decisions about farm production, rent control, and the minimum wage. The predictions may be correct only if “other things are equal〞. Economists do not agree on some of the predictions. They also do not agree on the value of different decisions. Some economists support a particular decision while others criticize it. Economists do agree, however, that there are no simple answers to economic questions.31. There is the possibility that setting maximum rent may.[A]cause a shortage of apartments[B]worry those who rent apartments as homes[C]increase the profits of landlords[D]encourage landlords to invest in building apartment32.According to the critics, rent control[A]will always benefit those who rent apartments[B]is unnecessary[C]will bring negative effects in the long run[D]is necessary under all circumstances33.The problem of unemployment will arise[A]if the minimum wage is set too high[B]if the minimum wage is set too low[C]if the workers are unskilledjz*[D]if the maximum wage is set34.The passagetells us[A]the relationship between supply and demand[B]the possible results of government controls[C]the necessity of government control[D]the urgency of getting rid of government controls35.Which of the following statements is NOT true"[A]The results of economic decisions can not always be predicted.[B]Minimum wage can not always protect employees.[C]Economic theory can predict the results of economic decisions if other factors are not changing.[D]Economic decisions should not be based on economic theory.Passage TwoQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.Social customs and ways of behaving change. Things which were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable. Just a few years ago, it was considered impolite behavior for a man to smoke on street. No man who thought of himself by smoking when a lady was in a room.Customs also differ from country to country. Does a man walk on the left or the right of a woman in your country" Or doesn't it matter" Should you use both hands when you are eating" Should leave one in your lap, or on the table"The Americans and the British not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs. For example, in both America and England people shake hands when they meet each other for the first time. Also, most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seat to a woman, and so will most Americans. Promptness is important both in England and in America. That is , if a dinner invitation is for 7 o'clock , the dinner guest either arrives close to that time or calls up to explain his delay. The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feel uncomfortable-----especially if they are your guests. When the food was served , one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife . The other guests were amused or shocked, but the host calmly picked up his knife and began eating in the same way. It would have been bad manners to make his guest feel foolish or uncomfortable.36. If one has accepted a dinner invitation, what should he do if he is late for the dinner"[A]. He should find an excuse[B]. He should ask for excuse.[C]. He should say sorry[D].He should telephone to explain his being late.37."It would have been bad manners to make his guests feel foolish or uncomfortable." At this stage nearly all the teachers are women, mostly married. The atmosphere is usually very friendly , and the teachers have now accepted the idea that the important thing is to make the children happy and interested. The old authoritarian (要绝对服从的) methods of education were discredited (不被认可) rather a long time ago--so much so that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interested rather than giving them actual instruction. The social education of young children tries to make them accept the idea that human beings in a society need to work together for their common good. So the emphasis is on co-operation rather than competition throughout most of this process. This may seem curious, in view of the fact that American society is highly competitive; however, the need for making people sociable in this sense has come to be regarded as one of the functions of education. Most Americans do grow up with competitive ideas, and obviously quite a few as criminals, but it is not fair to say that the educational system fails. It probably does succeed in making most people sociable and ready to help one another both in material ways and through kindness and friendliness.16. According to the passage, the U.S. elementary education is supposed to make children __D___.A. sensible and sensitiveB. competitive and interestedC. curious and friendlyD. happy and co-operative17. Some Americans complain about elementary schools because they think ___D__.A. children are reluctant to help each otherB. schools lay too much emphasis on co-operationC. children should grow up with competitive ideasD. schools give little actual instruction to children18. The author’s attitude towards American education can be best described as _A____.A. favorableB. negativeC. tolerantD. unfriendly19. The American educational system emphasizes ___C__.A. material wealthB. competitionC. co-operationD. personal benefit20. The word “sociable” (Line 7, Paragraph2) most probably means ___B__.A. fond of talking freelyB. friendly with other peopleC. concerned about social welfareD. happy at schoolPassage 3Li Qiu is a boy of fifteen and studying in Grade Three at Oak school. These restrict where, when and by whom alcohol may be sold. In order to open a pub or wine bar the owner must obtain the approval of the local magistrates who must be satisfied that he or she is a suitable person to sell alcohol. If the application is approved the owner obtains a license to sell alcohol and becomes the licensee. The name of the licensee is displayed above the front door. If magistrates are not happy with the way a pub is being run they can cancel the license.Pubs are only allowed to sell alcohol during official opening hours. They are allowed to remain open all day from 11a.m. to 11p.m. though many close in the afternoon. If they wish to stay open after 11p.m., they must obtain a special late license. Pubs open for a shorter time on Sundays, and in some parts of Wales they are closed altogether. In the US, there are local laws about when and where alcohol can be sold. Some towns are dry, i.e., no alcohol can be sold there at all. In general, restaurants and bars need a license to sell beer and wine. In some states alcohol for drinking at home is sold only in special liquor stores; in other places it is sold in any food shop. There are fewer restrictions on when alcohol can be sold than there are in Britain, and bars can stay open very late. The most common restriction is that alcohol may not be sold early on Sunday mornings.33. Primary schools are usually run by local educational authorities and over free tuition, although there are some private schools owned by enterprises and individuals.Secondary schooling is for children from 12 to17 years of age. Education of this kind is run by local governments and various business authorities. State-run secondary schools include junior middle schools and senior middle schools, both with three grades or years. The first three years of secondary school are compulsory and tuition is free. Senior middle school is not compulsory and students must pay minimal tuition fees. Private secondary schools often offer specializededucation and have a more vocational bent, but the qualifications they offer are considered to be on the same level as those of state-run middle schools. For higher education there are vocational courses as well as undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees. Bachelor’s degrees usually require 4 to 5 years of study, master’s degrees need 2 to3 years and Ph.D.s are granted after 3 years. Higher education is offered in universities, colleges, institutes, and vocational colleges. These institutes conduct academic and scientific research and provide social services as well as offering courses to students. To enter a university or college, students have to take the national entrance examination, which takes place every June and is now open to people of all ages. I was alone, quite ill and had to delay my flight home. Luckily, when booking my ticket months before, I had bought travel insurance. So my illness didn’t cost me a cent. It’s actually pretty simple. A lot of unforeseen things can happen to you when you’re traveling. Make sure you’re prepared for all of them.A good health insurance policy will get you proper medical attention anywhere in the world outside your home province — at the insurance company’s expense. The company will send you home if it is considered medically necessary and, if you’re sick enough, it will send a nurse to accompany you. If you end up in a hospital and a doctor recommends that a family member come to your bedside, the insurance company will pay for it. You may even get pocket money to make your hospital stay more comfortable. When I was sick in Bombay, I called the insurance company collect. It paid for a doctor (who came to my hotel room), all my medication, an extra night in the hotel and all my meals.Picture it: the day before your big trip to Vancouver, you wake up with appendicitis (阑尾炎). You have no choice — you have to cancel your trip. Your ticket, like most, is non-refundable and you can’t make any changes. You’re about to lose all the money you put out for the ticket — unless you bought cancellation insurance beforehand. Most travel plans include some form of non-refundable element: your deposit, your flights, your cruise, your stay at the all-inclusive resort. That non-refundable portion is what you’ll lose if you have to cancel your trip in the event that you get sick and you don’t have cancellation insurance.43. What happened to the writer when he was in Bombay?A) He forgot to buy travel insurance.B) He failed to book the plane ticket.C) His illness cost him a large amount of money.D) He was seriously ill.44. According to the passage, the following are the benefits of a good health insurance policyyou buy EXCEPT____.A) The company would send a nurse to take care of you if necessary.B) You will be cured by the best doctor in the local place.C) You can get certain amount of pocket money.D) The expense of the family member who comes to look after the patient is paid by theinsurance company.45. Which of the following is paid by the insurance company after the author was ill?A) plane ticket B) pocket moneyC) all the medication D) traveling expenses46. How can you make up the losses of the plane ticket when you have to cancel the trip because of some emergency?A) Buy cancellation insurance in advance.B) Negotiate with the airport.C) Make a call to the travel agency.D) All of the above.47. What can you learn from the passage?A) There is some form of non-refundable element in every travel plan.B) With cancellation insurance, all of your medication can be paid by the insurance companyif you are ill.C) Some losses can be made up if you buy some insurance beforehand.D) With a good health insurance policy, all of your needs will be satisfied.Passage FourQuestions 48 to 52 are based on the following passage.Women head governments, run companies and comprise about half the world's workforce, but a global poll shows that one in four people, most of them young, believe a woman's place is in the home. The survey of over 24,000 adults in 23 countries, conducted by Reuters/Ipsos and released on the eve of International Women's Day, showed that people from India (54 percent), Turkey (52 percent), Japan (48 percent), China, Russia, Hungary (34 percent each) and South Korea (33 percent) were most likely to agree that women should not work. And, perhaps surprisingly, people aged between 18 and 34 years are most likely to hold that view, not those from the older, and more traditional generation. However, the majority, or 74 percent, of those polled believe a woman's place is certainly not at home."Over the past century, women, collectively, have made great gains not only in terms of societal participation - from politics to the workplace to sports and the media and to intellectual pursuit - but there are still barriers to many," said John Wright, senior vice president of market research company Ipsos."This poll has a fundamental expression embraced by a full majority that women, individually or otherwise, should have the ability to choose to do what and where they believe they can make their greatest contribution," he said.In countries where most people believed women should stay at home, or where the majority held the opposite view, there was little difference between the sexes, the survey showed. For example, in India, the country where more than half of those polled said women should stay home, an almost equal number of men and women held this view.48. What is the survey conducted by Reuters/Ipsos about?A) Women’s role in the familyB) The relationship between husband and wifeC) Whether women should work or stay at home.D) Women’s rights49.In the survey conducted by Reuters/Ipsos, which country is listed as the first one that holds the largest number people believing women should not work?A) China B) Japan C) India D) Turkey50. What surprising result is obtained from the survey?A)I ndia has the largest number of people that believe women should work.B)Y oung generations are most likely to hold the view that women should not work.C)T he majority of those polled believe a woman’s place is at home.D)P eople are against the International Women’s Day.51. Conclusions can be drawn from John Wright EXCEPT________.A)I n the past, women made great achievements in many fields of society.B)T here still exist many barriers in women’s life.C)A majority of people don’t share the same view as what is expressed in the poll.D)W omen should have the ability to make their own choices.52. You can learn from the survey that ___________.A) In India, an almost equal number of men and women shared the same view.B) Older people are inclined to believe women should stay at home.C) Women’s role is insignificant in the workforce.D) There are more Chinese than Japanese that hold the view that women should stay at home.Part ⅡTranslation from English into Chinese (10%) (15 minutes)Directions:In this part, there are five items, and four of them are taken from the reading passages you have just read. Some bosses are hard to get along with. Some have excellent qualifications but no idea when it comes to dealing with people. Of course, not all bosses are like that. The relationship you have with your boss can be a major factor in determining your rise up the career ladder. Your boss is not only your leader, he is also the person best equipped to help you do the job you are paid to do. He can inform you of company direction that may affect your professional development. Your boss also needs you to perform at your best in order to accomplish his objectives. He needs your feedback in order to provide realistic and useful reports to upper management. But how does this help you establish a meaningful working relationship with your boss? The key is communication. Learn and understand his goals and priorities(优先的事). Observe and understand your boss’s work style. If he has not been clear with his expectations, ask! Likewise, ask for feedback and accept criticism gracefully. The seemingly contradictory evidence is reconciled by the difference what I call p ublic private speaking . More men feel comfortable doing “ public speaking ” , while more women feel comfortable doing “ private ” speaking . Another way of capturing these differences is by using the terms report-talk and rapport-talk .For most women , the language of conversation is primarily a language of rapport : a way of establishing connections and negotiating relationships . Emphasis is placed on displaying similarities and matching experiences . From childhood , girls criticize peers who try to stand out or appear better than others . People feel their closest connections at home , or in settings where they feel at home – with one or a few people they feel close to and comfortable with – in other words , during private speaking . But even the most public situations can be approached like private speaking .For most men , talk is primarily a means to preserve independence and negotiate and maintain status in a hierarchical social order . This is done by exhibiting knowledge and skill , and by holding center stage through verbal performance such as storytelling ,joking , or imparting information . From childhood , men learn to use talking as a way to get and keep attention . So they are more comfortable speaking in larger groups made up of people they know less well , in the broadest sense , “ public speaking ” . But even the most private situations can be approached like public speaking , more like giving a report than establishing rapport .61. Another term for “ private talking ” is ______ .A. report talkB. rapport talkC. persuasive talkD. women’s talk62. When women talk , they tend to ______ .A. criticize their friends who stand outB. make others feel at homeC. approach public situations like private talkingD. seek close relationship with other speakers63. Men talk in order to ______ .A. make new friendsB. share experienceC. negotiate with othersD. get attention64. The purpose of this passage is to _______ .A. compare and contrast the male and female talking stylesB. analyze the male and female talkC. inform of the gender differenceD. draw people’s attention to the difference65. The conclusion we can draw from this passage is that ________ .A. men talk more than womenB. men and women have different conversational stylesC. men like to display their knowledge and skills in their talkD. men are more independent than womenQuestion 66 to 70 are based on the following passage :It’s generally agreed that the greatest threat facing the world today is the warming of the earth’s atmosphere , commonly called global warming or the greenhouse effect . It is the world’s biggest problem because it is truly a world-wide problem . It involves everything in the world , from the North to the South poles , from the bottom of the ocean to the edge of the atmosphere . We therefore obviously need to find a solution to it . But first of all , we need to be clear about what it is that causes the greenhouse effect .Basically , we have been producing too many of the gases which , when they are released into the earth’s atmosphere , trap heat , and thus raise its temperature . There are several gases involved , but the main ones are carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons—often called CFCs . The carbon dioxide comes from burning forests and from burning fossil fuels such as oil and coal . The CFCs are given off by refrigerators and air-conditioning systems . Carbon dioxide is to blame for 56% of the greenhouse effect , and CFCs for 23% .We now dump 24 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. If this figure were to double , the average global temperature could go up between 1 to 4 degrees C . This may not sound like much , but a two degree rise would make the world hotter than it has ever been in human history . Unfortunately , to make matters worse , the warming effect may not make itself apparent until it is too late . The temperature of the world has risen by more than half a degree this century , and the oceans have risen by at least 10 cms . But just as it takes time for a kettle of water to boil , so it may have taken 30 years or so for the ocean to swell . This means that the global warming we are experiencing now is only a result of the carbon dioxide and other gases we have dumped into the atmosphere up to the 1960s . Since then , our use of fossil fuels has increased rapidly . In other words , the damage may have already been done . Temperatures are expected to increase by at least 1.3 Celsius degrees by 2030 and 3 degrees by the year 2070 .66. The best title for this text is ________ .A. Cause and Effect of Global WarmingB. Damages Done by Global WarmingC. Global Warming and Industrial DevelopmentD. Solution to the Problem of Pollution67. A contributing factor to the greenhouse effect is _________ .A. the earth’s atmosphereB. the world climateC. the forest fireD. the two poles68. The greenhouse effect we are experiencing now is resulted from _____ .A. the present environmental pollutionB. the poisonous gases produced 30 years agoC. the development of industryD. the wastes dumped by people69. The world temperature rise for this century is ______ .A. 1 to 4 degrees CB. 3 degrees CC. over half a degree CD. 1.3 degrees C70. We may infer from this passage that ______ .A. carbon dioxide and CFCs are equally harmful to the environmentB. global warming is a direct cause for natural disastersC. the world temperature rise has been going up more quickly as time passesD. people’s living standard has been on the riseQuestion 70 to 75 are based on the following passage :Time spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable , whether you are a book-lover or merely there to buy a book as a present . You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower . Whatever the reason , you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings . The desire to pick up a book with an attractive dust-jacket is irresistible , although this method of selection ought not to be followed , as you might end up with a rather dull book . You soon become engrossed in some book or other , and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent far too much time there and must dash off to keep some forgotten appointment –without buying a book , of course .This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is , I think , the main attraction of a bookshop . There are not many places where it is possible to do this .A music shop is very much like a bookshop . You can wander round such places to your heart’s content . If it is a good shop , no assistant will approach you with the inevitable greeting : “ Can I help you , sir?” You needn’t buy anything you don’t want . In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished browsing . Then , and only then , are his services necessary . Of course , you may want to find out where a particular section is , but when he has led you there , the assistant should retire discreetly and look as if he is not interested in selling a single book .You have to be careful not to be attracted by the variety of books in a bookshop . It is very easy to enter the shop looking for a book on , say ancient coins and to come out carrying a copy of the latest best-selling novel and perhaps a book about brass-rubbing-----something which had only vaguely interested you up till then . This volume on the subject , however , happened to be so well illustrated and the part of the text you read proved so interesting that you just had to buy it . This sort of thing can be very dangerous . Apart from running a huge account , you can waste a great deal of time wandering from section to section . Book-sellers must be both long-suffering and indulgent .71. You may spend too much time in a bookshop because _________ .A. the dust-jackets are very attractiveB. you start reading one of the booksC. it is raining outsideD. you have to make sure you can’t buy a dull book as a present72. In a good bookshop ________ .A. nobody takes any notice of youB. the assistant greets you in a friendly wayC. your heart is contentedD. you feel that you are in a music shop73. An assistant should help you _______ .A. as soon as you have entered a shopB. just before you finish browsingC. only when you have finished browsingD. when he leads you to a particular section74. It’s very easy to en ter a bookshop and buy_______ .A. a book on ancient coinsB. a best-selling novel on brass-rubbingC. a book that only vaguely interests youD. a book that unexpectedly interests you75. This passage is mainly about ______ .A. some advice on entering a bookshopB. how to select books in a bookshopC. assistants’ service in a bookshopD. attractions of books in a bookshopPart V Translation from English into Chinese :A punctual ( 守时的) person is in the habit of doing a thing at the proper time and is never late in keeping an appointment .The unpunctual man , on one hand , never does what he has to do at the proper time . ( 76 ) He is always in a hurry and in the end loses both time and his good name .A lost thing may be found again , but lost time can never be regained . Time is more valuable than material things . In fact , time is life itself . ( 77 ) The unpunctual man is for ever wasting and mismanaging his most valuable asset ( 财产) as well as other’s . The unpunctual person is always complaining that he finds no time to answer letters , or return calls or keep appointments promptly . But the man who really has a great deal to do is very careful of his time and seldom complains of want of it . He knows that he can not get through his huge amount of work unless he faithfully keeps every piece of work when it has to be attended to .Faithfully to be punctual in keeping one’s appointments is sign of disrespect towards others . ( 78 ) If a person is invited to dinner and arrives later than the appointed time , he keeps all the other guests waiting for him . Usually this will be regarded as a great disrespect to the host and all other guests present .( 79 ) Unpunctuality , moreover , is very harmful when it come to do one’s duty , whether public or private . Imagine how it would be if those who are put in charge of important tasks failed to be at their proper place at the appointed time . ( 80 ) A man who is known to be usually unpunctual is never trusted by his friends or fellow men .Part VI Translation from Chinese into English:81. 你对什么样的生活方式会感到满意?82.没有人能回答出雨季还将持续多久。

Looking down, I immediately recognized that something was wrong, and ran down to the edge of the near bank. There I saw Ma Shwe with her three-month-old calf struggling in the fast-rising water, and it was a life-and-death struggle. Her calf was floating and screaming with fear. Ma Shwe was as near to the far bank as she could get, holding her whole body against the rushing water, and keeping the calf pressed against her huge body. Every now and then the rushing water would sweep the calf away. There was a sudden rise in the water and the calf was washed clean over the mother’s body and was gone. Ma Shwe turned quickly to reach it and pressed the calf with her head and trunk(象鼻) against the rocky bank. Then with a huge effort, she picked it up in her trunk and tried until she was able to place it on a narrow shelf of rock.Just at this moment she fell back into the river. If she were carried down, it would be certain death. I knew, as well as she did, that there was one spot(地点) where she could get up the bank, but it was on the other side from where she had put her calf. While I was wondering what I could do next, I heard the sound of a mother’s love. Ma Shwe had crossed the river and got up the bank and was making her way back as fast as she could, roaring (吼叫) all the time, but to her calf it was music.1. The moment the author got down to the river bank he saw _____,A. the calf was about to fall into the riverB. Ma Shwe was placing the calf on the rockC. the calf was washed away by the rising waterD. Ma Shwe was holding the calf against the rushing water2. How did Ma Shwe manage to save her calf from the fast-flowing water?A. By putting it on a safe spot.B. By pressing it against her body.C. By taking it away with her.D. By carrying it on her back.3. How did the calf feel about the mother elephant’s roaring?A. It was a great comfort.B. It was a sign of danger.C. It was a call for help.D. It was a musical note.4. What can be the best title for the text?A. A Mother’s LoveB. A Brave ActC. A Deadly RiverD. A Matter of Life and DeathPassage TwoWe have met the enemy, and he is ours. We bought him at a pet shop. When monkey-pox, a disease usually found in the African rain forest, suddenly turns up in children in the American Midwest, it’s hard not to wonder if the disease that comes from foreign animals is homing in on human beings. “Most of the infections (感染) we think of as human infections started in other animals,” says Stephen Morse, director of the Center for Public Health Preparedness at Columbia University. It’s not just that we’re going to where the animals are; we’re also bringing them closer to us. Popular foreign pets have brought a whole new disease to this country. A strange illness killed Isaksen’s pets, and she now thinks that keeping foreign pets is a bad idea. “I don’t think it’s fair to have them as pets when we have such a limited knowledge of them,” says Isaksen.“Laws allowing these animals to be brought in from deep forest areas without stricter control need changing,”says Peter Schantz. Monkey-pox may be the wake-up call. Researchers believe infected animals may infect their owners. We know very little about these new diseases. A new bug (病毒) may be kind at first. But it may develop into something harmful (有害的). Monkey-pox doesn’t look a major infectious disease. But it is not impossible to pass the disease from person to person.5.From paragraph one we can say that the pet sold at the shop may _________.A. come from ColumbiaB. prevent us from being infectedC. enjoy being with childrenD. suffer from monkey-pox6. Why did Isaksen advise people not to have foreign pets?A. They attack human beings.B. We need to study native animals.C. They can’t live out of the rain forest.D. We do not know much about them yet.7. What does the phrase “the wake-up call” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?A. a new diseaseB. a clear warningC. a dangerous animalD. a morning call8. The text suggests that in the future we _______.A. may have to fight against more new diseasesB. may easily get infected by diseases from dogsC. should not be allowed to have petsD. should stop buying pets from AfricaPassage ThreeRead the following passage and then answer the questions given:Computer programmer David Jones earns ¥35,000 a year designing new computer games, yet he cannot find a bank ready to let him have a credit card (信用卡). Instead, he has been told to wait another two years, until he is 18. The 16-year-old works for a small firm in Liverpool, where the problem of most young people of his age is finding a job. David’s firm releases (推出) two new games for the fast throwing computer market each month. But David’s biggest headache is what to do with his money. Even though he earns a lot, he cannot drive a car, take out a mortgage (抵押贷款), or get credit cards. David got his job with the Liverpool-based company four months ago, a year after leaving school with six O-levels and working for a time in a computer shop. “I got the job because the people who run the firm knew I had already written some programs,”he said. David spends some of his money on records and clothes, and gives his mother 50 pounds a week. But most of his spare time is spent working.“Unfortunately, computing was not part of our studies at school,”he said. “But I had been studying it in books and magazines for four years in my spare time. I knew what I wanted to do and never considered staying on at school. While group sports are still part of the curriculum, the new way is to teach skills that are useful beyond gym class. Instead of learning how to climb a rope, children are taught to lift weights, balance their diets and build physical endurance. In this way, kids are given the tools and skills and experiences so they can lead a physically active life the rest of their life. Considering that 15 percent of American children 6 to 18 are overweight, supporters say more money and thought must be put into phys ed curriculum. In many cases, that may mean not just replacing the old gym-class model with fitness programs but also starting up phys ed programs because school boards often "put P.E. on the chopping block, cutting it entirely or decreasing its teachers or the days it is offered," says Alicia Moag-Stahlberg, the executive director of Action for Health Kids. The difference in phys ed programs is partly due to the lack of a national standard. "Physical education needs to be part of the core curriculum," she added. The wisdom of the new approach has some scientific support. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin have demonstrated how effective the fit-for-life model of gym class can be. They observed how 50 overweight children lost more weight when they cycled and skied cross-country than when they played sports. The researchers also found that teaching sports like football resulted in less overall movement, partly because reluctant students were able to sit on the bench.Another problem with simply teaching group sports in gym class is that only a tiny percentage of students continue playing them after graduating from high school. The new method teaches sells that contribute to adulthood.14.
