AMy parents moved from Mexico to South Texas in the early 90s with the hope for a brighter future for their family of nine---my parents, four boys and three girls. My parents have always wanted the best for us and they have done everything possible to encourage us to get a university degree. Never did they think that by pushing us that direction, it also meant encouraging us to move away and be distant from each other.Initially(起初), getting accustomed to the American culture and lifestyle was very difficult for my parents. They e from a culture where kids grow up together, go to school together and most of the time live in the same neighborhood. From our point, American family values were a bit different. Typically in the US, when you turn 18, you are expectedto graduate from high school, move out, find a university, possibly find a partner, get married and start a life together. Most of these decisions take you away from home; usually you have to follow opportunity and wherever that will take you. This is my family’s current situation. I graduated from Bethel College in Indiana in xx, and in order to fulfill my financial responsibilities of paying off student loans, I moved to Washington State for my job with Experience Mission. Ideally my parents wanted me to e home to South Texas, but that wasn’t where my opportunity took me.Currently, my sister Jennifer lives in Waco, Texas, about eight hours from my parents. My two younger brothers also decided to go to college at Bethel and are away from my parents. More than likely, when they graduate, they will probably not move back home to South Texas. My parent never imagined that their dream for a better future would separate our family this way.Facebook has played a crucial(决定性的) role in the way we municate while living in different places. Since we all use Facebook, we have found a place to connect and feel as if we were there together with each other.1.We can infer from the first paragraph that ________.A. the writer’s family are immigrants to AmericaB. the writer’ family came to America for a better futureC. the writer’ parents’ didn’t want their children t o get a university degreeD. the writer’ parents pushed their children away from each other 2.The writer’s parents found it hard to be used to American life because ________.A. they were strangers in AmericaB. they suffered from a culture shockC. the local people disliked their familyD. different countries have different lives3.The writer didn’t return to work in South Texas after graduation because ________.A. he owed a lot of money while studying at collegeB. he didn’t graduate from universityC. he found his opportunity in Washiongton StateD. his father couldn’t find him a job in South Texas4.What will probably be talked about in the paragraph after the last?A. The writer’s parents’ life in Texas.B. How the parents learn to use Facebook.C. Wha t the writer’s brothers’ and sisters’ lives are like.D. Theyfound that staying calm and frustrated can be harmful for an individual’s professional and even personal life. The Harvard Study of Adult Development tracked the lives of more than 800 men and women for the last 44 years, and discovered that those people who were suppressing(压抑)their negative emotions and feelings were at least 3 times more likely to admit that they had unrealized opportunities, disappointing careers and unsatisfying personal life. On the contrary, men and women who were able to let their anger and frustration out in a tactful(得体的) way, had far more chances to bee professionally successful and well-established. In addition, they said that they enjoyed much more emotional connection with their loved ones.Prof. George Vaillant, a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School, who has been a director of the Study of Adult Development since 1965, said that it has always been a mon to think of anger as of some bad and dangerous emotion which had to be suppressed and replaced by a ‘positive thinking.’ However, this kind of approach is being considered by scientists as pletely damaging for a person when encountering with hardships of reality. The new research ers after a similar study on this matter. In the previous findings it was revealed that more than 55percent of individuals had experienced positive results out of some angry episode in their lives. Almost one third of volunteers who took part in the study said that the episode helped them realize their own mistakes.Dr. Howard Kassinove, who was leading the previous study, explained that people who suddenly bee targets of someone’s angry emotions, start to realize those people much better. He said: “While assertive expression is always preferable to angry expression , anger may serve as an important alerting function that leads to deeper understanding of the other person and the problem.”9. We can infer from the passage that _________.A a worker can pour out his anger at his bossB only a boss or a leader can pour out his angerC we can only pour our anger at those who understand usD only a person who is misunderstood can pour out his anger10. Next, try talking with a student who is as shy as yourself or who shares the same interest as you. You can discuss your studies with a classmate, and you can also talk about your hobbies as well.

ASome people think that as more and more people have televisions in their homes, fewer and fewer people will buy books and newspapers. Why read an article in the newspaper, when the TV news can bring you the information in a few minutes and with pictures? Why read the life story of a famous man, when a short television program can tell you all that you want to know?Television has not killed reading, however. Today, newspapers sell in very large numbers. And books of every kind are sold more than ever before. Books are still a cheap way to get information and enjoyment. Although some books with hard covers are expensive, many books are printed today as paperbooks (平装本), which are quite cheap. A paperback collection of short stories, for example, is always cheaper than an evening at the cinema or the theater, and you can keep a book for ever and read it many times.Books are a wonderful provider of knowledge and pleasure and some types of books should be in every home. Every home should have a good dictionary. A good encyclopedia (百科全书), though expensive, is useful, too, because you can find information on any subject. Besides, you can have such books as history books., science textbook, cookbooks, and collections of stories and poems. Then from time to time you can take a book of poems off your shelves and read the thoughts and feelings of your favorite poets.1. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.A. TV programs are a chief provider of knowledgeB. cinemas are the best choice in getting informationC. reading is a cheap way of learning and having funD. newspapers are an expensive way to enjoy oneself2. What does the sentences “Television has not killed reading, however ” underlined in the second paragraph suggest?A. People only need reading, though.B. Reading is still necessary today.C. Reading is more fun than television.D. Watching television doesn‟t help reading.4. What can we learn from the passage?A. Fewer and fewer people will buy books.B. A good dictionary should be kept in every home.C. Books with hard covers sell better than paperbooks.D. More people like TV programs about famous men.BDomestic (驯养的) horses now pull ploughs, race in the Kentucky Derby, and carry police. But early horses weren‟t tame (驯服的) enough to perform these kinds of tasks. Scientists think the first interactions humans had with horses were far different from those today.Thousands of years ago, people killed the wild horses that lived around them for food. Over time, people began to catch the animals and raise them. This was the first step in domestication. As people began to tame and ride horses, they chose to keep those animals that had more desirable characteristics. For example, people may have chosen to keep horses that had a gentle personality so they could be ridden more easily. People who used horses to pull heavy loads would have chosen to keep stronger animals. Characteristics like strength are partly controlled by the animals‟ genes. So as the domesticated horses reproduced, they passed the characteristics on to their young. Each new generation of houses would show more of these chosen characteristics.Modern day horse breeds come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. This variety didn‟t exist in the horse population before domestication. The Shetland horse is one of the smallest breeds—typically reaching only one meter tall. With short, strong legs, the animals were bred to pull coal out of mine shafts (矿井) with low ceilings. Huge horses like the Clydesdale came on the scene around 1700. People bred these heavy, tall horses to pull large vehicles used for carrying heavy loads. The domestication of horses has had great effects on societies. For example, horse were important tools in the advancement of modern agriculture. Using them to pull ploughs and carry heavy loads allowed people to farm more efficiently. Before they were able to ride horses, humans had to cross land on foot. Riding horses allowed people to travel far greater distance in much less time. That encouraged populations living in different areas to interact with one another. The new from of rapid transportation helped cultures spread around the world1. Before domestication horses were ______.A. caught for sportsB. hunted for foodC. made to pull ploughsD. used to carry people2. The author uses the Shetland horse as an example to show ______.A. it is smaller than the Clydesdale horseB. horse used to have gentle personalitiesC. some horses have better shaped than othersD. horses were of less variety before domestication3. Horses contributed to the spread of culture by ______.A. carrying heavy loadsB. changing farming methodsC. serving as a means of transportD. advancing agriculture in different areas4. The passage is mainly about _______.A. why humans domesticated horsesB. how humans and horses needed each otherC. why horses came in different shapes and sizesD. how human societies and horses influenced each otherCA new study has found no evidence that sunscreen, commonly used to reduce the risk of skin caner, actually increases the risk.Researchers from the University of lows based their firdings on a review of 18 earlier studies that looked at the associstion between sunscreen use and melanoms(黑素瘤). They said that they found flaws in studies that had reported associations between sunscreen use and higher risk of melanoma. Most health experts believe that by protecting the skin from the harmful effects of the sun, sunscreen helpsprevent skin cancer, which is increasing in incidence (发生率) faster than any other cancer in the United States. But questions have been raised about sunscreen and whether it may have the opposite effect, perhaps by allowing people to remain exposed to the sun longer without burning. The researchers said that among the problems with some earlier studies is that they often failed to take into account that those people most at risk for skin concer—people with fair skin and freckles (雀斑),for example—are more likely to use sunscreen. As a result, it may appear that sunscreen users get cancer more often. The studies, which generally relied on volunteers to recall their sunscreen use, were also unable to prove how well the products had been applied, said the new study.1. The underlined word “flaws” in the 2nd paragraph most probably means .A.evidencesB.factsC.faultsD.failures2. People with fair skin and freckles .A.seldom use sunscreenB. are more in danger of skin concerC. can be free from the harm of the sunD. often expose themselves to the sun3. We can learn from the passage that .A. sunscreen users get skin cancer more oftenB. the volunteers have proved the effect of sunscreenC. the new study was based on the experiences of volunteersD. the number of skin cancer patients is increasing in America4. Which of the following can be the beat title for this passage?A. Sunscreen to Prevent Skin CancerB. Sunscreen to Increase Skin CancerC. Skin Cancer Caused by SunscreenD. Skin Cancer Caused by FrecklesDDespite the fact that it has never been seen almost everyone is familiar with the legendary unicorn(独角兽). Descriptions of unicorns have been found dating from ancient times. The great philosopher Aristotle theorized that there were two types of unicorn--- the so-called Indian Ass and the Oryx, a kind of antelope.Unicorns are often used in the logo of a noble family, town council or university as their special sign. EvenScotland is represented by a unicorn.According to the legend, anyone attempting to catch a unicorn had to be extremely cautious as it has a reputation for being very fierce. A clever trick suggested by unicorn-trappers, in order to catch this magnificent beast without being hurt by its horn, was for the hunter to stand in front of a tree and then to move quickly behind it as the unicorn charged. Hopefully, the creature could then be captured when its horn was stuck in the tree. When hollowed out and used as a drinking-cup, the unicorn‟s horn was said to have the power to offer protection against person. It was believed that nobody could be harmed-by drinking the contents of a uni corn‟s horn. Right up until the French Revolution in 1789, the French court was said to have used cups made of “unicorn” horn in order to protect the king. In addition, the horn was said to have medicinal value, so much so that it could be sold for more than ten times the price of the same weight of gold. What, then, was “unicorn” horn? We know at times the rhino(犀牛) was confused with this legendary creature. A drinking-cup supposedly made of “unicorn” horn was discovered to be made of the horn of a rhino.1. Which of the following is TRUE of the unicorn?A. It was not historically recordedB. Its horn was first used in FranceC. It was similar to the Indian Ass and the OryxD. It could be the symbol of a university2. To catch a unicorn, the unicorn-trappers had to try all of the following EXCEPT ____.A. tempting the unicorn to attackB. making use of the tree as a protectionC. hiding quickly behind the unicornD. having the unicorn horn stuck in the tree3. The last paragraph is mainly about ____.A. the properties of the unicorn hornB. the users of the unicorn hornC. the price of the unicorn hornD. the comparison between the unicorn horn and the rhino horn4. In the last paragrap h, the word “unicorn ” is in quotation marks (引号)because _____.A. the cup is designed only for a royal familyB. the unicorn does not exist in realityC. the unicorn is the rarest animal in the worldD. the medicinal value of the horn is appreciated第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)【题文】根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

We received a series of school education as well as non-school education during the course of growing up. And we become physically and mentally mature at some time when we can start to live independently in society, which owes to learning and shows its irreplaceable significance. Some people, however, argue that it is not necessary for us to continue learning after we start our career. Maybe this was true if time rolls back to hundreds of years ago when the accumulation of knowledge of human beings was at a low level. On the contrary, we would be stunned looking at the pace of our society’s development. Knowledge and information update themselves with periods which become shorter and shorter. It is not unimaginable anymore that the world changes a lot during the interval of closing and opening your eyes.We cannot propose a life without learning in such a fast-paced society, for we probably would become outdated if we stop learning after we graduate. It is only through the life-long learning that we can catch up with the changing society.Script for Listening ComprehensionPart I Listening Comprehension (20 %)Section ADirections:You will hear four conversations between two speakers. To avoid the pain of a drilling that may last perhaps a minute or two, we demand the needle—a shot of novocaine—that deadens the nerves around the tooth. Now it’s true that the human body has developed its millions of nerves to be highly aware of what goes on both inside and outside of it. This helps us adjust to the world. Without our nerves—and our brain, which is a bundle of nerves—we wouldn’t know what’s happening. But we pay for our sensitivity. We can feel pain when the slightest thing is wrong with any part of ourbody. The history of torture is based on the human body being open to pain. But there is a way to handle pain. Look at the Indian fakir who sits on a bed of nails. Fakirs can put a needle right through an arm, and feel no pain. This ability that some humans have developed to handle pain should give us ideas about how the mind can deal with pain.Th e big thing in withstanding pain is our attitude toward it. If the dentist says, “This will hurt a little,” it helps us to accept the pain. By staying relaxed, and by treating the pain as an interesting sensation, we can handle the pain without falling apart. After all, although pain is an unpleasant sensation, it is still a sensation, and sensations are the stuff of life.Questions 5 to 7 are based on the passage you have just heard.5. What is the passage mainly about?6. What is TRUE about the Indian fakir?7. What is the most important thing to handle pain?Passage TwoThere are many theories about the beginning of drama in ancient Greece. The one most widely accepted today is based on the assumption that drama evolved from ritual. The argument for this view goes as follows. In the beginning, human beings viewed the natural forces of the world ---- even the seasonal changes ---- as unpredictable, and they sought through various means to control these unknown and fearful powers. Those measures which appeared to bring the desired results were then retained and repeated until they hardened into fixed rituals. Eventually stories arose which explained or veiled the mysteries of the rites. As time passed some rituals were abandoned, but the stories, later called myths, persisted and provided material for art and drama. Those who believe that drama evolved out of ritual also argue that those rites contained the seed of theater because music, dance, masks, and costumes were almost always used. Furthermore, a suitable site had to be provided for performances and when the entire community did not participate, a clear division was usually made between the “acting area” and the “auditorium”. In addition, there were performers, and, since considerable importance was attached to avoiding mistakes in the enactment of rites, religious leaders usually assumed that task. Wearing masks and costumes, they often impersonated other people, animals, or supernatural beings, and mimed the desired effect ---- success in hunt or battle, the coming rain, the revival of the Sun ---- as an actor might. Eventually such dramatic representations were separated from religious activities.Another theory traces the theater’s origin from the human interest in storytelling. According to these ties, tales (about the hunt, war, or other feats) are gradually elaborated, at first through the use of impersonation, action, and dialogue by a narrator and then through the assumption of each of the roles by a different person. A closely related theory traces theater to those dances that are primarily rhythmical and gymnastic or that are imitations of animal movements and sounds.Questions 8 to 10 are based on the passage you have just heard.8. Where did drama begin according to many theories?9. What is the route of drama’s evolution according to another theory?10. Why is drama related to dances?Section CDirections: You are going to hear a passage three times. When the passage is read for the first time, you should listen carefully for its general idea.
