It has been one of the most common thing in our daily life and on campus. However, we may encounter with different difficulties and failures everywhere. It is advisable for us to realize that being positive is the key to success, which gives meaning to our life. Regardless of situations, an positive person never loses his hope, as it’s hope that paves the ways for gaining self-confidence. If you ask me the attitude towards being positive,I am eager to convey that positive attitude is the essential part for me to become stronger. One with positive attitude never fails to success.Firstly, the people possessing positive attitude could obtain numerous opportunities in the competition and are more likely to establish themselves intheir prospective careers. It is at these critical times that the attitude of being active, toward difficulty and life in general, eventually determines whether he can turn failure into victory. Once a person stop keeping the attitude of being positive, he can hardly maintain his past glory and survive in this competitive world.A positive person is he or she who never gets discouraged by any state of affairs, but looks at all the factors more positively that in turn leads him or her to bring improvements. He is a person who considers that whatever be the area of trouble, there may be positive or alternative ways through which he can come out from various difficult situations courageously.Regardless of situations, a positive person never loses his hope, as it's hope that paves the ways for gaining self-confidence. In this way, both optimism and confidence lead to achievements. Hardly ever you might have seen negative people who are successful or happy in their life. Rather, they are seen finding difficulties and complaining about their lives always. Therefore, one should have a positive approach in life, rather than, pessimistic. As long as a person stays positive, he remains energetic to deal with complicated situations in a successful manner. On should know the fact that without hope and confidence, nothing can be achieved. So, being positive is as important as making yourself confident, as itpromotes positivity which results in finding different solutions against various hindrances to success.2.The importance of training skilled workers员工技能培训的重要性Confronted with the ever more severe competition in the market, every ambitious enterprise cannot put too much emphasis on skill training for workers. That is because among all the resources a firm possesses, employees, especially those with high quality are the most valuable ones. The more competent the staff is, the stronger a company would be. Besides, skill training could improve the work efficiency of workers, and thus enhance the productivity of the whole company, saving cost and increasing profits. What’s more, with the rapid development of various new technologies, it takes more wits to learn and grasp those new tools to apply them to daily work. And that needs more skillful workers to accomplish, so skill training for workers can not be ignored by any vigorous entrepreneur.3.The effective way to combat distraction如何克服注意力分散Nowadays, distraction has become an extremely hot topic among not only adults but also youngsters. How to overcome distraction? The reasons accounting for it should be put forward in advance? Among the shaping factors, Iwould single out the three ones, such as, lack of schedule, doing less in more time, and keeping brains focused all the time.Hence, there are a number of approaches to reversing distraction and mastering deep work, for example, developing a daily ritual, and setting a specific task. Whichever approach, the key is to determine the length of focus time and stick to it. Firstly, I would like to recommend “deep scheduling”to combat constant interruptions and get more done in less time. Deep work should be scheduled for roughly a week or a month and once the date comes, you should protect the time without doing unrelated things. Secondly, another approach to getting more done in less time without distraction is to rethink how you priorities your day, and especially make a to-do list. Thirdly, you should try to idle your brains because it is indispensable to your brain to have a rest. When your brains switch between being focused and unfocused on a task, they tend to be more efficient.4.The importance of interpersonal skills社交技能的重要性Among all the important skills of human beings, social skills are regarded as the most important. In an information age, communication with others in allwalks of life plays an important role. No wonder that many students are deliberately working on their social skills.Common sense has told us that those who have successful love affairs usually possess excellent social skills. They are good at promoting an easy-going relation with their partners, which naturally result in a romantic affair. The same is true for family life. Good social skills are essential to keep family member on good terms with each other, bringing about a happy family life. Secondly, statistics show that one’s career success depends heavily on his or her social skills. Professional skills are necessary, but without good social skills, a good teamwork is hardly imaginable, which would undoubtedly hinder the full play of professional skills. Examples are not rarely seen from people who are talented and have reached high level of academic development, but have finally come to nothing due to their poor social skills. In conclusion, if we are to lead a happy life and succeed in career, we must improve ourselves in such social skills as the skill in communicating on a feeling level, the skill in developing and using interpersonal relations and so on.5.The benefits of doing exercises运动的好处Just as an old proverb says, happiness lies first of all in health. Good health is the most valuable thing a person can have but one cannot take good health for granted. It is vital to realize that the body needs proper care in order to be healthy. Additionally, everyone hopes to enjoy more happiness in the world. Our body cannot work well unless it receives the proper kind “fuel”, especially in this world full of fierce competitions. Firstly, doing more exercise is beneficial to build our bodies. It helps coordinate the different parts of our bodies when we have sports. Just like smiling, exercise can benefit our organs, which could let the heart beat faster than usual, and then helps enlarge the blood vessels to protect us from heart attacks. Besides, exercise can also contribute to improving our mood. When you do exercise, you move a lot, and you have to be more active. It helps you become more optimistic. What’s more, through doing exercise, we can have many chances to make friends who have common interest with us. In a word, exercise is helpful, important and absolutely necessary.6.The importance of international exchange国际学习交流的重要性International exchange plays a significant role in education. For students, studying in a foreign university is a very beneficial experience for their personal development. In a word, international exchange is both meaningful to students and institutes of higher education.7.The importance of inner beauty内在美的重要性Beauty has ever been a perpetual and eternal topic in lives among not only women but also men. Everyone holds the awareness of being beautiful, which is a nature of human being. As far as we know, beauty is usually divided into two aspects, that is, external beauty and inner beauty. The former normally indicates appearance, from clothes, making-up and physical feature to bags and decorations. Therefore, there come diversified methods for women and men to pursuit external beauty, which in their mind posts great influences on their lives. By contrast, the latter implies good virtues of a person, such as, kindness, confidence, character, honesty and so on. From my perspective, inner beauty plays a more important role in our daily lives. A good virtue will foster strong effects on people around, make us a popular person and easily tackle problems. Take confidence for example, the spirit of confidence can generate great power to cope with difficulties and harshness, assume frustration and pressure, andtherefore make it easy for people to achieve successes. Inner beauty is eternal and will become increasingly positive and stable in people mind, which is indispensability in the whole life. Hence, it is necessary for everyone to cultivate inner beauty so as to live a promising and colourful life.8.The importance of sharing分享的重要性Generally, sharing refers to giving others what you own for free, aiming to make them live better physically or mentally obtain the same delight you get. To be specific, sharing can occur in our daily trivial affairs. And it is of great importance to our life, which can be stated as follows.First, sharing can help us to make more friends in daily study and work. When we first step into the college gate, we may have come to an unfamiliar city and don’t know anyone. We can’t meet and talk with our childhood friends directly as before. At this time, we can make acquaintance with new friends by simply start sharing some delicious food with our roommates or other things. Secondly, through sharing, we can also broaden our vision, for example, learning instant message or news in more rapid way. Being in the era of technology, the sharing can be easily achieved by all kinds of online chatting tools. Last but not least, sharing can satisfy our spiritual needs and bring the pleasure which sometimes cannot be bought by money. For example, when we have some old articles orcloses which we don’t like any more, we can donate them to those in need. This behaviour of charity is typical of sharing. In summary, sharing is both a manifestation of our trust in the process of interpersonal communication and a bridge to help further enhance the friendship.9.The role of pets in the family动物在家庭的角色As for the role of pets in our family, psychologists have conducted a series of experiments to determine the role that pets play in improving happiness in our daily life. As the competition becomes more and more fierce, people always shoulder great pressure and endure different difficulties and dilemmas. An increasing number of people choose to feed pets as a better way to diffuse pressure, which could contribute to the harmonious family atmosphere. Compared with those without pets, pets owners could receive as much support from their pets as they did family members. What’s more, we, only-child generation, always attach more importance to study and work, neglecting the feeling and emotion of the elder, which does exert harmful influence on the relationship between family members. With the company of pets, the elder could enjoy more joy and avoid the feeling of being lonely. With the coming of boom in aging population, the Chinese have been experiencing a pet boom in recentyears and it can be predicted that the role of pets in family will become more and more vital.10.How to spend leisure time如何度过闲暇时间As a student, I have relatively more leisure time. I am obsessed with the thrill exercise brings to me. I can also be a quiet guy. I like watching classic American movies. The music, the beautiful natural scenes seem have a special charm to me which could make me forget the passing of time.2019年11月六级口语自我陈述真题1.Ways to be trusted by others如何赢得别人的信任Being in the social network, everyone must face the interpersonal communication and connection everyday, for which mutual trust is so necessary and beneficial. So how can we obtain trust from others?First, we can only be trusted when we treat others sincerely and do what we promise to do. No one will trust you if you are a dishonest man or do nothing consistent with your words. Just as the little boy in the fairy tale The Wolf Is Coming, when he has lied for three times, no one will take his words as truth. Second, we must be equipped with the skills to attain our aims. Although we indeed love to help others, we cannot offer real assistance to them without ability. So the most necessary method is to be stronger and more excellent, so that we can do something for others without putting much pressure on ourselves. That is to say, when you have a thousand yuan, you can easily donate one hundred to the poor one, but nobody will believe that you can give him all of your money if you just own hundred.Above all, as far as I am concerned, in order to be a trustworthy person, we should conduct well in both mentality and real capacity, each of which should not be neglected.2.智能手机Nowadays, with the rapid development of science and technology, smart phones gradually appear in our lives. Indeed, smart phones make our life more convenient, for instance, we can install all kinds of applications on our smart phones for communication, entertainment, payment and accessing up-to-date news and so on. As for me, I often use my smart phone to shop online, pay for my goods and search for learning materials, which greatly saves my time and simplifies some complicated procedures, and with the time saved, I can do more things which I like. However, just asevery coin has two sides, smart phones are no exception. The overuse or the addiction to smart phones tend to exert a negative impact on our life. Therefore, we should manage our time on smart phones properly. Generally speaking, I often set a time period for myself every day, such as two or three hours, and I usually use smart phones when it is necessary or on my spare time. I believe that smart phones would bring great possible advantages for us if used properly.3. How to manage stress如何应对压力When it comes to the stress, some people are afraid of stress. They think that the stresses and strains of work leads to their less joy and happiness. Particularly, students in expanding number begin to be confused about how to cope with the stress of exam. In their view, stress does harm to them both physically and mentally. Based on the survey conducted by Chinese Academic Research, a majority of college students admit that they are confronted with various pressure which makes them puzzled. Here are some critical methods and strategies to deal with the stress. In the first place, playing sports can exert a positive impact on the aspect of relieving heavy stress. As a consequence, those faced with press can do more exercise to relax themselves. In the second place, taking a positive and optimistic attitude towards life plays an indispensable role in our personal growth and future career. From another perspective, when you are in trouble and feel helpless, please take a positive attitude and effective measures to solve those thorny problems. The last but not the least, when you areconfronted with enormous stress of exam, I, without reservation, suggest that you should take instant actions. Namely, action speaks louder than words, if you are devoted to the course of preparing for the exam and make progress step by step, you can face the exam in a positive manner. In a word, we should take a correct and objective attitude towards to stress, particularly the stress of exam. I harbor that we can overcome it with longstanding efforts.4.The importance of cooperation合作的重要性Traditionally, it was generally accepted to work alone as proof of one's strength. But now with the ever-quickening pace of life and increasing fierce competition, team spirit is indispensable for the development of an enterprise or an individual. It is often said that "people are united and Mount Tai is moved". As long as all members are able to get along well and communicate with each other, their work can move forward better. The details about the importance of cooperation can be listed as follows.First and foremost, in our daily work or study, we often encounter many problems that cannot be solved by our own ability. At this time, teamwork is very important. With the help of the team, these problems can be solved easily and quickly, which can improve work efficiency. In addition, through team cooperation, it also provides employees with the opportunity to get along with colleagues, which is conducive to the cultivation of tacit understanding between employees, which can create a friendly and pleasant working environment for the promotion of later work.In a word, teamwork is very important, and no one can survive alone. They have to rely on others in some ways. Moreover, I believe that in modern society, teamwork is so essential that more and more companies require teamwork spirit. So we should also cultivate this spirit of teamwork in advance, so that we can adapt to the company and develop in an all-round way in the future.5.The most difficult course at collegeThere are many courses in my college. But the most difficult and the most impressive course is Japanese. Before I entered the college, I thought it is easy to learn Japanese well --just like learning English. But actually, things were not as simple as I thought. At first I even can not read a sentence for it’s not easy to remember the pronunciation of words. It was extremely time-consuming and challenging to memorize rare words and distinguish words similar to Chinese. At that time, I particularly admired those students in agronomy or pure biology for they don't have to memorize words and grammar. But everything is changed since I met professor Smith. He told us to dive into the culture behind the language first before memorizinggrammar, taking exams and pursuing high scores. At that moment, I understood what the original intention of language learning was. So I did as what he said, and I really got great progress in Japanese. So Japanese is the most difficult yet most impressive course in my college life.6.图书馆在大学的作用Academic learning exerts a positive impact on personal growth and future career to any college students. As a result, we cannot deny the role and function of the library in any university. The first function flashing in my mind is that the library provides us with a better environment and create an excellent atmosphere where college students can study more knowledge. Next to this, there are a lot of books, novels and the like which play a crucial role in the process of studying. Students who would like to make great progress can have a good taste of these book to enrich their life and expand the scope of knowledge. Finally, college students can share their various views in the library. When strange or different elements come together, we will have fresh perspectives and divergent ways of thinking.7.如何看待二手书When it comes to second-hand book, different people’s view varies from one to another. From my perspective, second-hand book is indispensable to academic learning, which should not be ignored by the young generation. On the one hand, reading second-hand book is a practical action of preserve the valuable resources. Thatis to say, papers in old books are made of wood. If we don’t reuse old books. we will waste much forest resource. On the other hand, it is a way of saving money. After all, it is expensive to buy a delicate book. Finally, the package of book is not we should focus on, but the knowledge in it. You will make great progress by acquiring more knowledge.以上就是英语趣配音为各位大学生分享的英语四六级口语考试部分真题。

历年六级口语真题及范文英文回答:1. Describe a person who has significantly influenced you.Of all the individuals who have left an enduring mark on my life, my high school English teacher, Mrs. Wilson, stands as a beacon of inspiration. Through her mentorship and guidance, I discovered a hidden reservoir of potential within myself and developed a profound appreciation for the transformative power of words.2. What is your favorite way to spend a weekend afternoon? On a leisurely weekend afternoon, I find solace in immersing myself in the tranquility of nature. Whether it'sembarking on a leisurely hike through verdant trails or cycling along scenic coastal paths, the outdoors provides a sanctuary for both physical and mental rejuvenation. The solitude and serenity of nature allow me to connect with my inner self, gather my thoughts, and recharge for the week ahead.3. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? By embracing resilience, I have learned to view challenges as opportunities for growth and transformation, knowing that with every setback comes the potential for personal evolution.5. What is your favorite place and why?My favorite place in the world is undoubtedly the local library. It is a sanctuary of knowledge, a haven for bibliophiles, and a place where my mind can roam freely. Surrounded by towering bookshelves filled with countless stories, I find solace and inspiration.

Help OthersAs we all know, since we live in a society made up of numerous people, we cannot do everything independently without being helped by others, and we should also give our hands when needed. And the kinds of help can range from handing over something to others to donating money to the ones in need. In my opinion, helping others has following benefits. First, when helping others, we can obtain the sense of being demanded, which is a kind of happiness. Generally, when somebody seeks help from us and we offer our supports to him, it will be a success for us since we can do something for others and they will be happier due to us. To make our friends, families, or even the strangers happy can be very satisfactory for ourselves. Secondly, the help is interactive since when we have difficulties, others will also help us. Helping others is a good way to make friends. If we just live with neglecting others’ needs and appeals, they will also do us the same and we will live a lonely life without just a friend. Therefore, helping others can be advantageous for both ourselves and other people, and we should do our best to help people in need.

1.The importance of positive thinking积极的重要性With the ever-quickening pace of life and increasing fierce competition, it is universally acknowledged that a growing number of undergraduates have become lazy and passive. Once a person stop keeping the attitude of being positive, he canhardly maintain his past glory and survive in this competitive world.A positive person is he or she who never gets discouraged by any state of affairs, but looks at all the factors more positively that in turn leads him or her to bring improvements. The more competent thestaff is, the stronger a company would be. Secondly, statis tics show that one’s career success depends heavily on his or her social skills. Immersed in the English-speaking environment, students’language abilitywould also see a giant leap. Hence, it is necessary for everyone to cultivate inner beauty so as to livea promising and colourful life.8.The importance of sharing分享的重要性Generally, sharing refers to giving others what you own for free, aiming to make them live better physically or mentally obtain the same delight you get. To be specific, sharing can occurin our daily trivial affairs. Compared with those without pets, petsowners could receive as much support from their pets as they did family members. Since I like being with my friends, I would call three or four friends to my home to have a meal together and play some electronic sports. If I am alone, sometimes I would to go to gym to work out. Therefore, we should manage ourtime on smart phones properly. So we should also cultivate this spirit of teamwork in advance, so that we can adapt to the company and develop in an all-roundway in the future.5.The most difficult course at collegeThere are many courses in my college. He told us to dive into the culture behind the language first before memorizing grammar, taking exams and pursuing high scores. Finally, collegestudents can share their various views in the library.

Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.The Curious Case of the Tree That Owns ItselfA)In the city of Athens, Georgia, there exists a rather curious local landmark—a large whiteoak that is almost universally stated to own itself. Because of this, it is considered one of the most famous trees in the world. So how did this tree come to own itself and the land around it?B)Sometime in the 19th century a Georgian called Colonel William Jackson reportedly tooka liking to the said tree and endeavored to protect it from any danger. As to why he loved itso, the earliest documented account of this story is an anonymously written front page article in the Athens Weekly Banner published on August 12, 1890. It states, “Col. Jackson had watched the tree grow from his childhood, and grew to love it almost as he would a human. Its luxuriant leaves and sturdy limbs had often protected him from the heavy rains, and out of its highest branches he had many a time gotten the eggs of the feathered singers. He watched its growth, and when reaching a ripe old age he saw the tree standing in its magnificent proportions, he was pained to think that after his death it would fall into the hands of those who might destroy it.”C)Towards this end, Jackson transferred by means of a deed ownership of the tree and a littleland around it to the tree itself. The deed read, “W. H. Jackson for and in consideration of the great affection which he bears the said tree, and his great desire to see it protected has conveyed unto the said oak tree entire possession of itself and of all land within eight feet of it on all sides.”D)In time, the tree came to be something of a tourist attraction, known as The Tree That OwnsItself. However, in the early 20th century, the tree started showing signs of its slow death, with little that could be done about it. Father time comes for us all eventually, even our often long lived, tall and leafy fellow custodians (看管者) of Earth. Finally, on October 9, 1942, the over 30 meter tall and 200-400 year old tree fell, rumor has it, as a result of a severe windstorm and/or via having previously died and its roots rotted.E)About four years later, members of the Junior Ladies Garden Club (who’d tended to thetree before its unfortunate death) tracked down a small tree grown from a nut taken from the original tree. And so it was that on October 9, 1946, under the direction of Professor Roy Bowden of the College of Agriculture at the University of Georgia, this little tree was transplanted to the location of its ancestor. A couple of months later, an official ceremony was held featuring none other than the Mayor of Athens, Robert L McWhorter, to commemorate the occasion.F)This new tree became known as The Son of the Tree That Owns Itself and it was assumedthat, as the original tree’s heir, it naturally inherited the land it stood on. Of course, there are many dozens of other trees known to exist descending from the original, as people taking a nut from it to grow elsewhere was a certainty. That said, to date, none of the original tree’s other children have petitioned the courts for their share of the land, so it seems all good. In any event, The Son of the Tree That Owns Itself still stands today, though often referred to simply as The Tree That Owns Itself.G)This all brings us around to whether Jackson ever actually gave legal ownership of the treeto itself in the first place and whether such a deed is legally binding.H)Well, to begin with, it turns out Jackson only spent about three years of his life in Athens, starting at the age of 43 from 1829 to 1832, sort of dismissing the idea that he loved the tree from spending time under it as a child and watching it grow, and then worrying about what would happen to it after he died. Further, an extensive search of land ownership records in Athens does not seem to indicate Jackson ever owned the land the tree sits on.I)He did live on a lot of land directly next to it for those three years, but whether he ownedthat land or not isn’t clear. Whatever the case, in 1832 a four acre parcel, which included the land the tree was on and the neighboring land Jackson lived on, among others, was sold to University professor Malthus A Ward. In the transaction, Ward was required to payJackson a sum of $1,200 (about $31,000 today), either for the property itself or simply in compensation for improvements Jackson had made on the lot. In the end, whether he ever owned the neighboring lot or was simply allowed to use it while he allegedly worked at the University, he definitely never owned the lot the tree grew on, which is the most important bit for the topic at hand.J)After Professor Ward purchased the land, Jackson and his family purchased a 655 acre parcel a few miles away and moved there. Ten years later, in 1844, Jackson seemed to have come into financial difficulties and had his little plantation seized by the Clarke County Sheriff’s office and auctioned off to settle the mortgage. Thus, had he owned some land in Athens itself, including the land the tree sat on, presumably he would have sold it to raise funds or otherwise had it taken as well.K)And whatever the case there, Jackson would have known property taxes needed to be paid on the deeded land for the tree to be truly secure in its future. Yet no account or record indicates any trust or the like was set up to facilitate this.L)On top of all this, there is no hard evidence such a deed ever existed, despite the fact that deed records in Athens go back many decades before Jackson’s death in 1876 and that it was supposed to have existed in 1890 in the archives according to the original anonymous news reporter who claims to have seen it.M)As you might imagine from all of this, few give credit to this side of the story. So how did all of this come about then?N)It is speculated to have been invented by the imagination of the said anonymous author at the Athens Weekly Banner in the aforementioned 1890 front page article titled “Deeded to Itself”, which by the way contained several elements that are much more easily proved to be false. As to why the author would do this, it’s speculated perhaps it was a 19th century version of a click-bait thought exercise on whether it would be legal for someone to deed such a non-conscious living thing to itself or not.O)Whatever the case, the next known instance of the Tree That Owns Itself being mentioned wasn’t until 1901 in the Centennial Edition of that same paper, the Athens Weekly Banner. This featured another account very clearly just copying the original article published abouta decade before, only slightly reworded. The next account was in 1906, again in the AthensWeekly Banner, again very clearly copying the original account, only slightly reworded, the 19th century equivalent of re-posts when the audience has forgotten about the original.36. Jackson was said to have transferred his ownership of the oak tree to itself in order to protect it from being destroyed.37. No proof has been found from an extensive search that Jackson had ever owned the land where the oak tree grew.38. When it was raining heavily, Jackson often took shelter under a big tree that is said to own itself.39. There is no evidence that Jackson had made arrangements to pay property taxes for the land on which the oak tree sat.40. Professor Ward paid Jackson over one thousand dollars when purchasing a piece of land from him.41. It is said the tree that owned itself fell in a heavy windstorm.42. The story of the oak tree is suspected to have been invented as a thought exercise.43. Jackson’s little plantation was auctioned off to settle his debt in the mid-19th century.44. An official ceremony was held to celebrate the transplanting of a small tree to where its ancestor had stood.45. The story of the Tree That Owns Itself appeared in the local paper several times, with slight alterations in wording.Section CDirections:There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage. It is irrefutable that employees know the difference between right and wron g. So why don’t more employees intervene when they see someone exhibiting at-risk behavior in the workplace? There are a number of factors that influence whether people intervene. First, they need to be able to see a risky situation beginning to unfold. Second, the company’s culture needs to make them feel safe to speak up. And third, they need to have the communication skills to say something effectively. This is not strictly a workplace problem; it’s a growing problem off the job too. Every day people witness things on the street and choose to stand idly by. This is known as the bystander effect—the more people who witness an event, the less likely anyone in that group is to help the victim. The psychology behind this is called diffusion of responsibility. Basically, the larger the crowd, the more people assume that someone else will take care of it—meaning no one effectively intervenes or acts in a moment of need. This crowd mentality is strong enough for people to evade their known responsibilities. But it’s not only frontline workers who don’t make safety i nterventions in the workplace. There are also instances where supervisors do not intervene either. When a group of employees sees unsafe behavior not being addressed at a leadership level it creates the precedent that this is how these situations should be addressed, thus defining the safety culture for everyone.Despite the fact that workers are encouraged to intervene when they observe unsafe operations, this happens less than half of the time. Fear is the ultimate factor in not intervening. There is a fear of penalty, a fear that they’ll have to do more work if they intervene. Unsuccessful attempts in the past are another strong contributing factor to why people don’t intervene—they tend to prefer to defer that action to someone else for all future situations. On many worksites, competent workers must be appointed. Part of their job is to intervene when workers perform a task without the proper equipment or if the conditions are unsafe. Competent workers are also required to stop work from continuing when there’s a danger.Supervisors also play a critical role. Even if a competent person isn’t required, supervisors need a broad set of skills to not only identify and alleviate workplace hazards but also build a safety climate within their team that supports intervening and open communication among them.Beyond competent workers and supervisors, it’s important to educate everyon e within the organization that they are obliged to intervene if they witness a possible unsafe act, whether you’re a designated competent person, a supervisor or a frontline worker.46. It used to refer to people trying to protect wildlife and natural ecosystems. In the 21st century, the term has evolved to capture the need to combat human-made climate change. The distinction between these two strands of environmentalism is the cause of a split within the scientific community about nuclear energy. On one side are purists who believe nuclear power isn’t worth the risk and the exclusive solution to the climate crisis is renewable energy. The opposing side agrees that renewables are crucial, but says society needs an amount of power available to meet consumers’ basic demands when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing. Nuclear energy, being far cleaner than oil, gas and coal, is a natural option, especially where hydroelectric capacity is limited.Leon Clarke, who helped author reports for the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, isn’t an uncritical supporter of nuclear energy, but says it’s a valuable option to have i f we’re serious about reaching carbon neutrality.“Core to all of this is the degree to which you think we can actually meet climate goals with 100% renewables,” he said. “If you don’t believe we can do it, and you care about the climate, you are forced to think about something like nuclear.”The achievability of universal 100% renewability is similarly contentious. Cities such as Burlington, Vermont, have been “100% renewable” for years. But these cities often have s mall populations, occasionally still rely on fossil fuel energy and have significant renewable resources at their immediate disposal. Meanwhile, countries that manage to run off renewables typically do so thanks to extraordinary hydroelectric capabilities.Germany stands as the best case study for a large, industrialized country pushing into green energy. Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2011 announced Energiewende, an energy transition that would phase out nuclear and coal while phasing in renewables. Wind and solar power generation has increased over 400% since 2010, and renewables provided 46% of the country’s electricity in 2019.But progress has halted in recent years. The instability of renewables doe sn’t just mean energy is often not produced at night, but also that solar and wind can overwhelm the grid during the day, forcing utilities to pay customers to use their electricity. Lagging grid infrastructure struggles to transport this overabundance of green energy from Germany’s north to its industrial south, meaning many factories still run on coal and gas. The political limit has also been reached in some places, with citizens meeting the construction of new wind turbines with loud protests. The result is that Germany’s greenhouse gas emissions have fallen by around 11.5% since 2010—slower than the EU average of 13.5%.51. What accounts for the divide within the scientific community about nuclear energy?A) Attention to combating human-made climate change.B) Emphasis on protecting wildlife and natural ecosystems.C) Evolution of the term ‘green energy’ over the last century.D) Adherence to different interpretations of environmentalism.52. What is the solution to energy shortage proposed by purists’ opponents?A) Relying on renewables firmly and exclusively.B) Using fossil fuel and green energy alternately.C) Opting for nuclear energy when necessary.D) Limiting people’s non-basic consumption.53. What point does the author want to make with cities like Burlington as an example?A) It is controversial whether the goal of the whole world’s exclusive dependence on renewables is attainable.B) It is contentious whether cities with large populations have renewable resources at their immediate disposal.C) It is arguable whether cities that manage to run off renewables have sustainable hydroelectric capabilities.D) It is debatable whether traditional fossil fuel energy can be done away with entirely throughout the world.54. What do we learn about Germany regarding renewable energy?A) It has increased its wind and solar power generation four times over the last two decades.B) It represents a good example of a major industrialized country promoting green energy.C) It relies on renewable energy to generate more than half of its electricity.D) It has succeeded in reaching the goal of energy transition set by Merkel.55. What may be one of the reasons for Germany’s progress having halted in recent years?A) Its grid infrastructure’s capacity has fallen behind its development of green energy.B) Its overabundance of green energy has forced power plants to suspend operation during daytime.C) Its industrial south is used to running factories on conventional energy supplies.D) Its renewable energy supplies are unstable both at night and during the day.Part IV Translation (30 minutes) Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to translate a passage from Chinese into English.
