Do you like yellow, orange, red? If you do, you must be an optimist, a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefer greys and blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy, and you would rather follow than lead. You tend to be a pessimist. At least, this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of colors preference, as well as the effect that colors have on human beings. They tell us, among other facts, that we do not choose our favorite color as we grow up----we are born with our preference. If you happen to love brown, you did so, as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.Colors do influence our moods----there is no doubt about it .A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one; and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing. A black bridge overthe Thames River, near London, used to be the scene of more suicides than any other bridge in the area ----until it was repainted green. The number of suicide attempts immediately fell sharply; perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.Light and bright colors make people not only happier but more active. It is an established fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or grey.1."You would rather follow than lead" means_______.A. you don't like to follow othersB. you would be a member rather than a leaderC. you would be afraid of following othersD. you would like to be a leader rather than a follower2. If one enjoys life, one is sure to prefer________.A. red to yellowB. blue to orangeC. red to greyD. blue to yellow3."They tell us, among other facts, that we don't choose our favorite colors as we grow up." "among other facts" means______.A. besides other factsB. in regard to other factsC. not considering other factsD. according to other facts4. Which of the following is facts?A. People's preference of one color to another is instinctB. People's preference of one color to another is acquired as they grow up.C. More people happen to love brown because they saw something brown when they were bornD. Colors have little influence on our moods5. Those who committed suicide preferred the bridge over the Thames River near London to others because of _______.A. its shapeB. its structureC. its colorD. its building materials2.题干:Scientists today are making greater effort to study ocean currents (洋流). Most do it using satellites and other high-tech equipment. However, ocean expert Curtis Ebbesmeyer does it in a special way --- by studying movements of random floating garbage. A scientist with many years’ experience, he started this type of research in the early 1990s when he heard about hundreds of athletic shoes wa shing up on the shores of the northwest coast of the United States. There were so many shoes that people were setting up swap meets to try and match left and right shoes to sell or wear.Ebbesmeyer found out in his researches that the shoes — about 60,000 in total — fell into the ocean in a shipping accident. He phoned the shoe company and asked if they wanted the shoes back. As expected, the company told him that they didn't. Ebbesmeyer realized this could be a great experiment. If he learned when and where the shoes went into the water and tracked where they landed, he could learn a lot about the patterns of ocean currents. The Pacific Northwest is one of the world's best areas for beachcombing(海滩搜寻) because winds and currents join here, and as a result, there is a group of serious beachcombers in the area. Ebbesmeyer got to know a lot of them and asked for their help in collecting information about where the shoes landed. In a year he collected reliable information on 1, 600 shoes. With this data, he and a colleague were able to test and improve a computer program designed to model ocean currents, and publish the findings of their study. As the result of his work, Ebbesmeyer has become known as the scientist to call with questions about any unusual objects found floating in the ocean. He has even started an association of beachcombers and ocean experts, with 500 subscribers from West Africa to New Zealand. They have recorded all lost objects ranging from potatoes to golf gloves.1. The underlined phrase swap meets in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to _____.A. fitting roomsB. trading fairsC. business talksD. group meetings2. Ebbesmeyer phoned the shoe company to find out _______.A. what caused the shipping accidentB. when and where the shoes went missingC. whether it was all right to use their shoesD. how much they lost in the shipping accident3. How did Ebbesmeyer prove his assumption?A. By collecting information from beachcombers.B. By studying the shoes found by beachcomber.C. By searching the web for ocean currents models.D. By researching ocean currents data in the library.4. Ebbesmeyer is most famous for ________.A. traveling widely the coastal cities of the worldB. making records for any lost objects on the seaC. running a global currents research associationD. phoning about any doubtful objects on the sea5. What is the purpose of the author in writing this passage?A. To call people's attention to ocean pollution.B. To warn people of shipping safety in the ocean.C. To explain a unique way of studying ocean currents.D. To give tips on how to search for lost objects on the beach.3.题干:Nearly everyone agrees that money doesn’t buy as much as it used to, no matter where you want to spend it. This is certainly true of the paper money that passes so quickly through one’s hands. Inflation(通货膨胀) eats away at its buying power just as the steady appetite of waves chews at sand cliffs. But what about coins that seem to do very little except clutter(塞满) up purses and pockets? Unlike notes, metal money becomes more valuable the longer it is held, especially if it is put away where is won’t get scratched or worn. Why is this? One reason is that coins, being more durable, fall more readily into a category for collectors. Naturally, the rarer gold pieces must become more valuable as the piece of this metal goes up.But, curiously, one of the rarest coins in the world is not made of gold, but of the relatively cheaper sliver. In 1840, the United States mint(造纸厂) struck 19 570 silver dollars. That is what its records show. Today only six of this original number remain and these are unlikely ever to reach the auction market. So what happened to some 19 564 large silver coins, not the easiest sort of things to lose? One of the more romantic theories is that they were part of the payment to Napoleon for the American territory then known as Louisiana. But they never reached France. Somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico, the ship transporting them was sunk, either by a storm or by pirates(海盗). The probable answer to the mystery is that they were melted down since the silver value was greater than the actual value of the coin. What really happened to the rest will probably always remain a mystery. What is known is that whoever can come up with one will find himself instantly rich.1. It can be inferred from the passage that____.A. money buys as much as it did beforeB. money does not buy as much as it did beforeC. Paper money buys more than metal moneyD. metal money buys more than paper money2. Which of the following is TRUE of a coin?A. The longer it is held, the less valuable it becomes.B. The more it wears out, the more valuable it becomes.C. The less it gets scratched, the less it values.D. The longer it lasts, the more it values.3. According to this passage, one of the rarest coins in the world is made of ____.A. silverB. goldC. copperD. paper4. Coins become more valuable because _____.A. they clutter up purses and pocketsB. the price of metal goes upC. they fall more readily into a category for collectors due to their durationD. both B and C5. What really happened to some 19 564 large silver coins?A. They were melted down.B. They were sunk in the Gulf of Mexico.C. It is still a mysteryD. They were stolen by pirates.4.题干:Most of us lead unhealthy lives; we spend far too much sitting down. If in addition we are careless about our diets, our bodies soon become loose and flabby (松弛的) and our systems sluggish (缺乏活力的). There are some aspects of our unhealthy lives that we cannot avoid.I am thinking of such features of modern urban life as pollution, noise, rushed meals and stress. But keeping fit is a way to minimize the effects of these evils. The usual suggestion to a person who is looking for a way to keep fit is to take up some sport or other. While it is true that every weekend you will find people playing football and hockey in the local park, they are outnumbered a hundred to one by the people who are simply watching them. For those who do not particularly enjoy competitive sports-and it is especially difficult to do so if you are not good at them-there are such solitary activities as cycling, walking, jogging and swimming. What often happens though is that you do them in such a leisurely way, so slowly, that it is doubtful if you are doing yourself much good, apart from the fact that you have at least managed to get up out of your armchair.Even after you have found a routine for keeping in shape, through sport or gymnastics, you are still only half way to good health, because, according to the experts, you must also master the art of complete mental and physical relaxation. It has to do with deep breathing, emptyingyour mind of all thoughts, meditation, and so on. Yoga, as practiced in the West, is the most widely known and popular of the systems for achieving the necessary state of relaxation. It seems ironical, though, that as our lives have improved in a material sense we have found it increasingly necessary to go back to forms of activity-physical effort on the one hand and relaxation on the other-which were the natural way of life of our forefathers.1. Pollution, noise and stress are examples of _____.A .causes of unfitness B. bad features of living in townsC. the things we can completely do away withD. unavoidable things in town2. Most of the people who go to the park at the weekend are _______.A. football playersB. football spectatorsC. keep-fit enthusiastsD. elderly people3. We don't get much out of separate sports because we _____.A. don't do them very oftenB. don't do them vigorously enoughC. find it hard to get out of our armchairsD. don't find them interesting4. To be healthy we must _____.A. keep fit and activeB. keep fit and learn to relaxC. be active and practice YogaD. have a sound mind5. Our forefathers were healthy because_____.A. their way of life closely involved both exercise and relaxationB. they were careful to get plenty of fresh airC. they spent most of the time out of doorD. their environment was not polluted5.Passage 1题干:It was a cold winter day. A woman drove up to the Rainbow Bridge tollbooth (收费站). “I’m paying for myself, and for the six cars behind me,”she said with a smile, handing over seven tickets. One after another, the next six drivers arriving at the tollbooth were informed, “Some lady up ahead already paid your fare.”It turned out that the woman, Natalie Smith, had read something on a friend’s refrigerator: “Practice random kindness and sen seless acts of beauty.” The phrase impressed her so much that she copied it down.Judy Foreman spotted the same phrase on a warehouse wall far away from home. When it stayed on her mind for days, she gave up and drove all the way back to copy it down. “I thought it was beautiful,” she said, explaining why she’d taken to writing it at the bottom of all her letters, “like a message from above.” Her husband, Frank, liked the phrase so much that he put it up on the classroom wall for his students, o ne of whom was the da ughter of Alice Johnson, a local news reporter. Alice put it in the newspaper, admitting that though she liked it, she didn’t know where it came from or what it really meant. Two days later, Alice got a call from Anne Herbert, a woman living in Marin. It was in a restaurant that Anne wrote the phrase down on a piece of paper, after turning it around in her mind for days.“Here’s the idea,” Anne says. “Anything you think there should be more of, do it randomly.” Her fantasies include painting th e classrooms of shabby schools, leaving hot meals on kitchen tables in the poor part of town, and giving money secretly to a proud old lady. Anne says, “Kindness can build on itself as much as violence can.”The acts of random kindness spread. If you were one of those drivers who found your fare paid, who knows what you might have been inspired to do for someone else later. Like all great events, kindness begins slowly, with every single act. Let it be yours!1. Why did Natalie Smith pay for the six cars behind her?A. She knew the car drivers well.B. She wanted to show kindness.C. She hoped to please others.D. She had seven tickets.2. Judy Foreman copied down the phrase because she _________.A. thought it was beautifully writtenB. wanted to know what it really meantC. decided to write it on a warehouse wallD. wanted her husband to put it up in the classroom3. People should practice random kindness to those in need.B. People who receive kindness are likely to offer it to others.C. People should practice random kindness to strangers they meet.D. People who receive kindness are likely to pay it back to the giver.6.题干:T he market investigation is indispensable to sales promotion. They are as closely related as the lips and teeth, so to speak. What you produce is for sale on the market. It would be impossible to succeed in selling a product without first investigating the market. In the investigational market, goods on sale coming from different countries and suppliers are always facing keen competition. Under such circumstances, they will try everything possible to familiarize themselves with the market conditions. In making investigations, we ought to get information about what similar items the competitors are offering their regular customers, etc. Then, how can we obtain such information? There are many channels that we can ma ke use of in doing this sort of work. The commercial counselor’s offices of our embassies stationed abroad can help us in making market investigations. Nowadays, our import and export corporations send their trade groups abroad every now and then. One of their purposes is to make market surveys on the spot.Certainly, face-to-face talks with foreign businessmen are also important channels to get market information. The Chinese Export Commodities Fair and some other fairs of similar nature as well as visits of foreign businessmen provide us some opportunities. Of course, there are some other ways of making market investigations.1. In making market investigations, one should______.A. get enough information concernedB. advertise his productsC. produce high quality goodsD. none of above2. The word “indispensable” in the first line means ______.A. impossibleB. essentialC. advisableD. available3. Which of the following statement is NOT true?A. The relationship between market investigation and sales promotion is just as that of the lips and teeth.B. It is impossible to succeed in selling a product without market investigation.C. Making market investigation is important because ______.A. in market goods on sale are numerousB. every producer is facing keen competitionC. it can greatly promote salesD. all of the above5. All of the following are channels to get market information EXCEPT______.A. to have commercial counselor’s office of our embassies stationed abroadB. to promote the quality of our own productsC. to send trade groups abroad every now and thenD. to have face-to-face talks with foreign businessmen7.题干:Is there a “success personality”—some winning combination of qualities that leads almost inevitably to achievement? If so, exactly what is that secret success formula, and can anyone develop it?At the Gallop Organization we recently focused in depth on success, probing the attitudes of 1500 prominent people selected at random from who’s who in America. Our research finds out a number of qualities that occur regularly among top achievers. Here is one of t he most important, that is common sense.Common sense is the most prevailing quality possessed by our respondents. Seventy-nine percent award themselves a top score in this quality. And 61 percent say that common sense was very important in contributing to their success. To most, common sense means the ability to present sound, practical judgments on everyday affairs. To do this, one has to sweep aside extra ideas and get right to the core of what matters. A Texas oil and gas businessman puts it this way: “The key ability for succe ss is simplifying. In conduction of meeting and dealing with industry r educing a complex problem to the simplest term is highly important.”Is common sense a quality a person is born with, or can you do something to increase it? The oil man’s answer is that common sense can definitely be developed. He attributes his to learning how to debate in school. Another way to increase your store of common sense is to observe it in others, learning from their—and your own—mistakes.Besides common sense, there are many other factors that influence success: knowing your field, self-reliance, intelligence, the ability to get things done, leadership, creativity, relationships with others, and of course, luck. But common sense stands out. If you develop these qualities, you’ll succeed. And you might even find yourself listed in who’s who someday.1. It can be known from the passage that who’s who _____.A. is a very useful book telling us how to succeedB. is a book providing us with the information about the family life of some famous peopleC. is a book providing us with the names and brief biographies of the top successful people2. According to the author, common sense _____.A. is something that common people like bestB. is a popular quality a person is born withC. is something that enables one to form correct opinionsD. is a quality that is possessed by common people3. It can be inferred from the passage that a successful businessman _____.A. pays attention to the essence of a problem when he tries to solve itB. tries to get experience through practiceC. keeps on learning in order to be successfulD. has strong willpower, extensive interest and intelligence4. The passage is mainly concerned with _____.A. organizational ability and good work habitsB. the way to obtain big profits and achieve fame and successC. knowledge and interest which are primary to successD. what successful people have in common5. According to the author, how to develop one’s common sens e?A. To learn how to debate and learn from mistakes.B. To become a businessmanC. To become famous.D. They buy guns to protect their homes and to carry with them for personal safety when traveling. Unfortunately, instead of safety, what the new handgun owner too often gets is personal tragedy. As I found out in my reading, a handgun does not protect the American home very well. The home handgun is far more likely to kill or injure family members and friends than anyone who breaks in, and is especially harmful to young adults and children.Because 90 percent of break-ins take place when no one is home, the handgun bought for defense is very often stolen. According to some statistics, each year about 100,000 handguns are stolen from ordinary citizens. These guns then enter the criminal underworld and are used in more crimes. Thus, the citizen who lost guns is helping to arm the criminal class. As a New York City police officer recently pointed out to a homeowner who asked if he should buy a handgun to protect his home, too often it is the homeowner himself who ends up getting shot and killed, because he most often warns the robber by saying something like “Stop!” or “What do you think you’re doing?” Possibly, the thief turns and fires. In street crime, the use of a handgun for defense is very risky, with the defender often losing the gun and having it used against him. The handgun owner seldom even gets the chance to use his or her gun because the moment of surprise is always with the attacker. In fact, trying to use a handgun to keep someone off makes the risk of death quite a bit higher. For the ordinary citizen, using a handgun is seldom helpful for defense on the street. And, in the home, the only way to get real defense from a personal handgun would be to have it always at the ready, perhaps in hand loaded and ready to fire every time there is a knock on the door. That is not exactly the American way or my idea of a civilized society.1.Why do people arm themselves according to the passage?A. Because they want to use guns to protect their personal goods.B. Because killing animals with guns is their favorite sport.C. Because the number of crimes of violence is still small.D. Because people intend to attack others with guns in crimes.2.More often than not, what the handgun brings its owner is .A. safetyB. tragedyC. luckD. happiness。

大学英语四级知识点汇总
大学英语四级知识点汇总一、听力1、选项特点:同类信息居多;选项信息比较全面;选项信息较长。
2、选项分析:选项考点分布广;选项词性以名词、动词、形容词为主;选项词组短语中常见的有“a bit”,“a little”,“get sth. done”,“the way to do sth.”

We also value personal qualities and socialskills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils learn from each other as well asfrom the teacher.Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks andassignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teachingwhen this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teac h them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. For any Englishman, there can never be any discussion as to who is the world’ s greatestdramatist ( 剧作家 ). Only one name can possibly suggest itself to him: that of William Shakespeare. It seems as real as something that actually happens; in it the dreamer takes actions and reacts. During dreams the body is asleep but the thinking part of thebrain is wide awake. In fact, it is more active than it sometimes is when the body is aw ake.One group of researchers decided to see what would happen if they stopped people from dreaming. As soon as the electroencephalograph (脑电图仪 ) registered a dream pattern, researchers woke the dreamer. They did this all night for several nights, every time the person started to dream. The experiment revealed that people who were unable to dream became nervous, easily upset, and hungrier. As soon as they were able to sleep without interruptions they lost their nervousness and became normal again; however, they then had more dreams than usual. It was as if they were catching up on their dreams. To check these findings, the researchers carried on a control experiment. Again they woke peopleduring the night, but during non-dreaming periods. These people did not change their daytime behavior. And when they were allowed to sleep without interruptions ( 打断 ), the number of their dreams did not increase.Experiments like these have caused scientists to ask if dreams serve a purpose. Researchers know, for example, that some people who go for days without sleep will suffer from hallucinations (幻觉). Certain people even begin to show signs of mental illness. Some researchers believe thatpeople become this way because they cannot have their usual numbers of dreams. According tothis theory dreaming helps people to lead normal lives.1).
