2020年职称英语理工类B级阅读判断专项测试及答案解析第一篇Dining CustomEvery land has its own dining custom, and the UnitedStates is no exception. Americans feel that the first rule of being a polite guest is to be on time. Ifa person is invitedto dinner at 6:30, the hostess expects him to be there at 6:30 or not more than a few minutes after. Because she usually does her own cooking, she times the meal so that the coffee and meat will be at their best at the time she asks the guest to come. If he is late, the food will not be so good, and the hostess will be disappointed. When the guest can not come on time, he calls his host or hostess on the telephone, gives the reason, and tells at what time he thinks he can come.As guests continue to arrive, the men in the group stand when a woman enters and remain standing until she found a chair. A man always rises when he is being introduced to a woman. A woman does not rise when she is being introduced either to a man or a woman unless the woman is much older. When the guests sit down at a dinner table, it is customary for the men to help the ladies by pushing their chairs under them.Even an American may be confused by the number of knives, forks, and spoons besides his plate when he sits down to a formal dinner. The rule is simple, however: use them in theorder in which they lie, beginning from the outside, or watch the hostess and do what she does. The small fork on the outside on the left is for salad, which is often served with the soup. The spoon on butter spreader, on a small bread-and-butter plate at the left. Over the years, scientists have come up with a variety of strategies for coating ,glazing ,and layering windowsto make them more energy efficient.Smart windows go a step further. They use chromogenic technologies which involvechanges of color.Electrochromic windows use electricity to changecolor. For example,a sheet of glass coated with thin layersof chemical compound such as tungsten oxide works a bit likea battery.Tungsten oxide is clear when an electric charge isapplied and dark when the charge is removed, that is,when the amount of voltage is decreased, the window darkens untilit's completely dark after all electricity is taken away.Soapplying a voltage determines whether the window looks clearor dark. One important feature that makes a smart window so smartis that it has a sort of “memory.” All it takes is a small jolt of voltage to turn the window from one state to theother. Then ,it stays that way.Transitions take anywhere from10 seconds to a few minutes, depending on the size of thewindow. The development of smart windows could mean thatmassive air conditioning systems may no longer need.“In the future,”Granqvist says, “our buildings may look different.”练习:1.Which of the following statements does not indicatethe importance of windows as described in the first twoparagraphs?A Windows can change from clear to dark to save energy.B Windows help to save energy by letting light in.C Windows help to save energy by providing heat.D Windows enable people to have contact with theoutside world.2. And the pollution is releasedat aheight where its effect on climate change is more than double that on theground.Mark Ellingham built his business onhelping people travel. Now he wants to help people stop – at least by air.He is calling for a 100 green tax on allflights to Europe and Africa, and 250 on flights to the rest of the world. The unusual thingabout King Arthur is that legends of his heroism have persisted for severalcenturies and spread far beyond England, the place where they began. The earliest stories of King Arthur represent himas a warrior who fought and subdued the invading Norsemen in the years aroundA. D. 700. This much of the Arthurian tale is probably based on fact. Whethercalled Arthur or not, there is a body of evidence supporting the existence ofsuch a warrior. It is the later embellishments of the tale whoseauthenticityis questionable. According to these, Arthur was born in a castle in Tintagel onthe stormy western coast of England and because he was the illegitimate son ofKing Uther Pendragon, he was spirited away by the magician Merlin and his trueidentity kept from him. He became king after freeing the sword Excalibur fromthe stone into which it was thrust. He married the beautiful Guinevere andassembled in his court all the noblest knights of the land, including Lancelot, with whom Guinevere would later be unfaithful to him. He wasfinally defeatedin battle by his illegitimate son Mordred, and his body was spirited away tothe isle of A Valon. This romantic tale greatly appealed to the Englishand the French in the Middle Ages, when the code of chivalry-ideal qualities ofknighthood-constituted an important part of many stories. Tales of the heroismof Galahad, Percival, Gawain, and many other of Arthur's knights werecirculated as well.In England today, there are many sites claiming apiece of the Arthurian an legend. There is a mined castle at Tintagel. NearGlastonbury are the remains of an ancient abbey where Arthur’s and Guinevere'sbodies were supposedly exhumed in the 12th century. Neither of these provesthat the legend is true, but they do keep its mystique alive. 1. Teaching Is “One of the Least Popular Jobs in the UK”1) The UK government has just published a report on the future of secondary-school teaching (pupils aged 11~16), and the conclusion of the report is that many secondary schools now face great difficulties in finding people who want to be teachers. Since the 1980s, the number of graduates who say they would “seriously consider” teaching as a career has fallen sharply, from 64% in 1982 to just 17% today. Thereport suggests that urgent action needs to be taken in order to encourage more intelligent young graduates into teaching.2) The main drawback of secondary teaching, according to the report, is the low salary. Earnings in teaching are much lower than in many other jobs, and this means that fewer and fewer young people decide to be teachers. Joanne Manners, 24 is a good example. “ I graduated in maths last year, and I was thinking of doing a teacher training course to become a maths teacher—but when I looked into the details, it became clear that teaching isn’t a very lucrative(赚钱的)job these days. I saw I could earn twice as much if I worked in marketing or advertising, and so I decided not to become a teacher.”3) It’s not just about the money, however. The survey concluded that another reason why people don’t want to be teachers is that some teenagers behave very badly in school.A lot of schools have problems with discipline, and it seems clear that children do not have the same respect for teachersas in the past. Here’s the view of Dave Hallam, anaccountant from London:” I think parents are to bla me. They should have stricter rules with their children at home andalso teach their children to have more respect for teachers.”4) “ It makes me feel so proud.” Says Brian Jones, who works in a secondary school in London. So what does he thinkthe government should do to encourage more people to become teachers?” “My view is that the government should reducethe burden of work on teachers. I find that I always have too much work to do.”5) The report is clear that the problem of teachershortage is a very serious one. It says that the government should raise teachers’ pay significantly, to catch up with workers in other professions. It also suggests that the government could launch a nationwide publicity campaign, with some advertisements on TV and in the newspapers, to show the positive sides of teaching to young people. Another solution could be set a maximum number of hours per week that teachers can work, in order to reduce stress on teachers. “Hopefully,” the report concludes, “these solutions can improve the poor image of secondary teaching, and increase the number of young people who want to become teachers in the future.【题干】23. 第十三篇:The Value of MotherhoodIn shopping malls, the assistants try to push you into buying “a gift to thank her for her unselfish love”. When you log onto1a website, a small pop-up2 invites you to book a bouquet for her. Commercial warmth and gratitude are the atmosphere being spread around for this special Sunday in May.(1)The popularity of Mother's Day around the world suggests that Jarvis got all she wanted. In fact, she got more - enough to make her horrified.(2) They buy, among other things, 132 million cards. Mother's Day is the No 1 holiday for flower purchases. Then there are the various commodities, ranging from jewelry and clothes to cosmetics and washing powder, that take advantageof the promotion opportunities. Because of this, Jarvisspent the last 40 years of her life trying to stop Mother's Day. One protest against the commercialization of Mother'sDay even got her arrested – for disturbing the peace, interestingly.(3)As Ralph Fevre, a reporter at the UK newspaper The Guardian, observe, traditionally "motherhood is somethingthat we do because we think it's right." But in the logic ofcommercialism, people need something in exchange for their time and energy. A career serves this purpose better.(4) So they work hard and play hard. Becoming a mother, however, inevitably handicaps career anticipation.(5) According to The Guardian, there are twice as many child-free young women as there were a generation ago. Or, they put off the responsibility of parenting until later in their lives. So, Fevre writes that the meaning of celebrating Mother's Day needs to be updated: "It is to persuade people that parenting is a good idea and to honor people for their attempt to be good people."A. The American version of Mother's Day was thought up as early as 1905, by Anna Jarvis, as a way of recognizing the real value of motherhood.B. But what's more, commercialism changes young people's attitude towards motherhood.C. Obviously, the best gift will be a phone call or a visit.D. According to a research by the US card company Hallmark, 96 percent of American consumers celebrate the holiday.E. As a result, motherhood has suffered a huge drop in status since the 1950s.F. In addition, women are being encouraged to pursue any career they desire.。

What Is a Dream? For centuries, people have wondered about the strange things that they dream about. Some psychologists say thatthis nighttime activity of the mind has no special meaning. Others, however, think that dreams are an important part of our lives. In fact, many experts believe that dreams can tell us about a person’s mind and emotions. Before modern times, many people thought that dreams contained messages from God. It was only in the twentieth century that people started to study dreams in a scientific way.The Austrian psychologist, Sigmund Freud1,was probably the first person to study dreams scientifically. In his famous book, The interpretation of Dreams (1900), Freud wrote that dreams are an expression of a person’s wishes. He believed that dreams allow people to express the feelings, thoughts, and fears that they are afraid to express in real life. The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung2 was once a student of Freud’s. Jung, however, had a different idea about dreams. Jung believed that the purpose of a dream was to communicatea message to the dreamer. He thought people could learn more about themselves by thinking about their dreams. For example, people who dream about falling may learn that they have too high an opinion of themselves. On the other hand, people who dream about being heroes may learn that they think too little of themselves.Modern-day psychologists continue to develop theories about dreams. For example, psychologist William Domhoff from the University of California, Santa Cruz, believes thatdreams are tightly linked to a person’s daily life, thoughts, and behavior. A criminal, for example, might dream about crime.Domhoff believes that there is a connection betweendreams and age. His research shows that children do not dream as much as adults. According to Domhoff, dreaming is a mental skill that needs time to develop. He has also found a link between dreams and gender. His studies show that the dreams of men and women are different. For example, the people in men’s dreams are often other men, and the dreams often involve fighting. This is not true of women’s dreams.3 Domhoff found this gender difference in the dreams of people from 11 cultures around the world, including both modern and traditional ones. Can dreams help us understand ourselves? Psychologists continue to try to answer this question in different ways. However, one thing they agree on this: If you dream that something terrible is going to occur, you shouldn’t panic. The dream may have meaning, but it does not mean that someterrible event will actually take place. It’s important to remember that the world of dreams is not the real world.

(1)Telling Tales about PeopleOne of the most common types of nonfiction, and one that many people enjoy reading, is stories about people's lives. These stories fall into three general categories: autobiography, memoir, and biography. An autobiography is the story of a person's life written by himself or herself. Often it begins with the person's earliest recollections and ends in the present. Autobiography writers may not be entirely objective in the way they present themselves. However, they offer the reader a good look at the way they are and what makes them that way. People as diverse as Benjarmin Franklin and Helen Keller have written autobiographies. 1Other writers, such as James Joyce, have written thinly fictionalized accounts of their lives. These are not autobiographies, but they are very close to it.Memoirs, strictly speaking, are autobiographical accounts that focus as much on the events of the times as on the life of the author. 2Memoir writers typically use these events as backdrops for their lives. They describe them in detail and discuss their importance. Recently, though, the term memoir seems to be becoming interchangeab1e with autobiography. A memoir nowadays may or may not deal with the outside world.Biographies are factual accounts of someone else's life. In many senses, these may be the hardest of the three types to write. Autobiography writers know the events they write about because they lived them. But biography writers have to gather information from as many different sources as possible. Then they have to decide which facts to include. Their goal is to present a balanced picture of a person, not one that is overly positive or too critical. A fair well-presented biography may take years to research and write.词汇:backdrop n. 背景interchangeable adj. 可转换的注释:1. People as diverse as Benjamin Franklin and Helen Keller have written autobiographies. 就像本杰明?富兰克林和海伦?凯勒一样,各种各样的人们已经写了自传。

2020职称英语新增文章5篇简版中英对照

第二篇Baby TalkBabies normally start to talk when they are 13 to 15 months old. Ryan Jones is only eight months old, but he isalready “talking”with his parents. When lie is hungry, he opens and closes his hand. This means milk. He also knows the signs for his favorite toy and the word more.Ryan is not deaf, and his parents are not deaf, but his mother and father are teaching him to sign. They say a word and make a sign at the same time. They repeat this again and again. When Ryan learns a new sign, his family is very excited. Ryan’s parents think that he will be a happier baby because he can communicate with them.Ryan s parents are teaching Ryan to sign because of a man named Joseph Garcia. Although Garcia was not from a deaf family, he decided to learn American Sign Language (ASL). First, he took courses in ASL. Then he got a job helping deaf people communicate with hearing people. In his work, he saw many deaf parents sign to their infants. He noticed that these babies were able to communicate much earlier than hearing children. They talked with signs by the time they were eight months old. When they were one year old, they could use as many as 50 signs.Garcia decided to try something new. He taught ASL to parents who were not deaf. The families started to teach signs to their infants when they were six or seven months old. These babies started using signs about two months later. More and more parents took Garcia’s ASL classes. Like Ryan’s family, they were excited about signing with their babies. They wanted to give their babies a way to communicate before they could use spoken words. Some people worry about signing to babies. They are afraid that these babies won’t feel a need to talk. Maybe they will develop spoken language later than other babies. However, research does not show this. In fact, one study found just the opposite. Signing babies actually learned to speak earlier than other children. As they grow older, these children are more interested in books. They also score higher on intelligence tests1.There is still a big question for parents: Which are the best signs to teach their babies? Some parents make their own signs. Other parents want to teach ASL. It can be useful because many people understand it. There,s no clear answer, but we do know this: All signing babies and their families are talking quite a lot!第二篇婴儿语婴儿通常在1 ~15个月的时候开始说话。

2020职称英语新增文章B级:The Romance of
Arthur
Most cultures have some st of hero whepresents the best values of what its people believe in. The unusual thingabout King Arthur is that legends of his heroism have persisted f severalcenturies spread far beyond Engl, the place they began.
The earliest sties of King Arthur represent himas a warri who fought subdued the invading Nsemen in the years aroundA. D. 700. This much of the Arthurian tale is probably based on fact. Whethercalled Arthur not, there is a body of evidence suppting the existence ofsuch a warri. It is the later embellishments of the tale whose authenticityis questionable. Accding to these, Arthur was bn in a castle in Tintagel onthe stmy western coast of Engl because he was the illegitimate
son ofKing Uther Pendragon, he was spirited away by the magician Merlin his trueidentity kept from him. He became
king after freeing the swd Excalibur fromthe stone into which it was thrust. He married the beautiful Guinevere assembled
in his court all the noblest knights of the l, including Lancelot, with whom Guinevere would later be unfaithful to him. He was finally defeatedin battle by his illegitimate son Mdred, his body was spirited away tothe isle of A Valon.
This romantic tale greatly appealed to the English the French in the Middle Ages, when the code of chivalry-ideal qualities ofknighthood-constituted an imptant part of many sties. Tales of the heroismof Galahad, Percival, Gawain, many other of Arthur's knights werecirculated as well.
In Engl today, there are many sites claiming apiece of
the Arthurian an legend. There is a mined castle at Tintagel. NearGlastonbury are the remains of an ancient abbey Arthur’s Guinevere'sbodies were supposedly exhumed in the 12th century. Neither of these provesthat the legend is true, but they do keep its mystique alive.
