In 20 years, I believe there will be significant changes in technology, lifestyle, and the environment. For example, technology will have advanced so much that we
might have self-driving cars, robots doing household chores, and virtual reality being a part of our daily lives. Our lifestyle will also change, with more people working remotely and flexible working hours becoming the norm. As
for the environment, I hope to see more sustainable
practices in place, such as renewable energy sources and a reduction in single-use plastics.

Future Visions: Shaping the World ofTomorrowIn the ever-evolving landscape of technology and science, the future appears to be a limitless frontier, brimming with promise and potential. As we peer into the distance, the outlines of a new world begin to emerge, one that is increasingly shaped by the choices and advancements of the present. This essay delves into the envisioned transformations of our future, exploring the pivotal roles that technology, environmental sustainability, and societal shifts will play in shaping the decades ahead.Firstly, the realm of technology stands poised to revolutionize our lives in profound ways. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning into everyday life will become increasingly common, leading to advancements in areas such as healthcare, transportation, and education. Imagine a world where AI doctors assist in diagnosing diseases with unprecedented accuracy, whereself-driving cars navigate the roads safely, and where personalized learning experiences tailored by AI teachers become the norm. Furthermore, the development of quantumcomputing and nanotechnology will open up new horizons in scientific research and innovation, potentially leading to breakthroughs in fields ranging from energy production to medicine.Concurrently, environmental sustainability will emerge as a central theme of the future. As the effects of climate change become more pronounced, there will be a greater focus on renewable energy sources and sustainable living practices. Solar, wind, and tidal power will become increasingly viable alternatives to fossil fuels, while innovative technologies such as carbon capture and storage will help mitigate the impact of greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, there will be a shift towards circular economies, where waste is minimized and resources are efficiently recycled, leading to a more harmonious coexistence with nature. Moreover, societal shifts will play a crucial role in shaping the future. The rise of the gig economy and remote work will continue to transform the traditional workplace, enabling greater flexibility and accessibility. This, in turn, will facilitate a more inclusive and diverseworkforce, as individuals from diverse backgrounds and locations can contribute to the global economy. Additionally, the increasing interconnectedness of theworld through technology will foster a greater sense of global community, leading to a more tolerant and understanding society. In conclusion, the future holds immense promise and potential, but it is also one that requires careful stewardship and forward-thinking. The integration of technology, environmental sustainability, and societalshifts will play pivotal roles in shaping the decades ahead. It is up to us, the stewards of this future, to ensure that we make choices and advancements that lead to a world thatis not only technologically advanced but also environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive. As we peer into the distance, let us remember that the future is not just a destination but also a journey, one that we must travel together, hand in hand, towards a brighter tomorrow.

The writer George Eliot cauti oned us that, among all forms of mistake, prophesy is the most gratuitous. The pers on that we would all ack no wledge as her 20th -cen tury coun terpart, Yogi Berra, agreed. He said, "It's tough to make predict ions, especially about the future."I'm going to ignore their cautions and make one very specific forecast. In the world that we are creati ng very quickly, we're going to see more and more things that look like scie nee fiction, and fewer and fewer things that look like jobs. Our cars are very quickly going to start driv ing themselves, which means we're going to need fewer truck drivers. We're going to hook Siri up to Wats on and use that to automate a lot of the work that's curre ntly done by customer service reps and troubleshooters and diagnosers, andwe're already taking R2D2, painting him orange, and putting him to work carrying shelves around warehouses, which means we need a lot fewer people to be walk ing up and dow n those aisles. Now, for about 200 years, people have bee n say ing exactly what rm tell ing you -- the age of tech no logical un employme nt is at hand —start ing with the Luddites smash ing looms in Brita injust about two cen turies ago, and they have bee n wrong. Our econo mies in the developedworld have coasted along on someth ing pretty close to full employme nt.Which brings up a critical question: Why is this time different, if it really is? The reason it's differe nt is that, just in the past few years, our mach ines have started dem on strati ng skills they have never, ever had before: understanding, speaking, hearing, seeing, answering, writing, and they're still acquiri ng new skills. For example, mobile huma noid robots are still in credibly primitive, but the research arm of the Defense Department just launched a competition to have them do things like this, and if the track record is any guide, this competition is going to be successful. So whe n I look aroun d, I think the day is not too far off at all whe n we're going to have an droids doing a lot of the work that we are doing right now. And we're creati ng a world where there is going to be more and more tech no logy and fewer and fewer jobs. It's a world that Erik Brynjolfsson and I are calling "the new machine age."The thing to keep in mind is that this is absolutely great n ews. This is the best econo mic n ews on the planet these days. Not that there's a lot of competition, right? This is the best economic n ews we have these days for two main reas ons. The first is, tech no logical progress is what allowsus to continue this amazing recent run that we're on where output goes up over time, while at the sametime, prices go down, and volume and quality just continue to explode. Now, some people look at this and talk about shallow materialism, but that's absolutely the wrong way to look at it. This is abundance, which is exactly what we want our econo mic system to provide. The sec ond reas on that the new mach ine age is such great n ews is that, once the an droids start doing jobs, we don't have to do them anymore, and we get freed up from drudgery and toil. Now, when I talk about this with my friends in Cambridge and Silicon Valley, they say, "Fantastic. No more drudgery, no more toil. This gives us the chanee to imagine an entirely differe nt kind of society, a society where the creators and the discoverers and the performers and the inno vators come together with their patr ons and their finan ciers to talk about issues, en terta in, enlighten, provoke each other." It's a society really, that looks a lot like the TED Conference. And there's actually a huge amount of truth here. We are see ing an amaz ing flourish ing tak ing place .In a world where it is just about as easy to gen erate an object as it is to print a docume nt, we have amaz ing new possibilities. The people who used to be craftsme n and hobbyists are now makers, and they're responsible for massive amounts of innovation. And artists who were formerly constrained can now do things that were never, ever possible for them before. So this is a time of great flourish ing, and the more I look around, the more convinced I become that this quote, from the physicist Freema n Dyson, is not hyperbole at all. This is just a pla in stateme nt of the facts. We are in the middle of an ast onishing period.["Tech no logy is a gift of God. After the gift of life it is perhaps the greatest of God's gifts. It is the mother of civilizati ons, of arts and of scie nces." —— Freema n Dyson]Which brings up another great question: What could possibly go wrong in this new machine age? Right? Great, hang up, flourish, go home. We're going to face two really thorny sets of challe nges as we head deeper into the future that we're creati ng.The first are economic, and they're really nicely summarized in an apocryphal story about a back-and-forth betwee n Henry Ford II and Walter Reuther, who was the head of the auto workers union. They were touring one of the new modern factories, and Ford playfully turns to Reuther and says, "Hey Walter, how are you going to get these robots to pay union dues?" And Reuther shoots back, "Hey Henry, how are you going to get them to buy cars?"Reuther's problem in that an ecdote is that it is tough to offer your labor to an economy that's full of machines, and we see this very clearly in the statistics. If you look over the past couple decades at the retur ns to capital --in other words, corporate profits -- we see them going up, and we see that they're now at an all -time high. If we look at the returns to labor, in other words total wages paid out in the economy, we see them at an all -time low and heading very quickly in theopposite direct ion.So this is clearly bad news for Reuther. It looks like it might be great news for Ford, but it's actually no t. If you want to sell huge volumes of somewhat expe nsive goods to people, you really want a large, stable, prosperous middle class. We have had one of those in America for just about the entire postwar period. But the middle class is clearly under huge threat right now. We all know a lot of the statistics, but just to repeat one of them, media n in come in America has actually gone dow n over the past 15 years, and we're in dan ger of gett ing trapped in some vicious cycle where in equality and polarizati on continue to go up over time. The societal challe nges that come along with that kind of in equality deserve some atte nti on. There are a set of societal challe nges that rm actually not that worried about, and they're captured by images like this. This is not the kind of societal problem that I am concerned about. There is no shortage of dystopian visions about what happens when our machines become self-aware, and they decide to rise up and coord in ate attacks aga in st us. I'm going to start worry ing about those the day my computer becomes aware of my prin ter.(Laughter) (Applause)So this is not the set of challenges we really need to worry about. To tell you the kinds of societal challenges that are going to come up in the new machine age, I want to tell a story about two stereotypical American workers. And to make them really stereotypical, let's make them both white guys. And the first one is a college -educated professi on al, creative type, man ager, engin eer, doctor, lawyer, that kind of worker. We're going to call him "Ted." He's at the top of the American middle class. His counterpart is not college-educated and works as a laborer, works as a clerk, does low-level white collar or blue collar work in the economy. We're going to call that guy "Bill."And if you go back about 50 years, Bill and Ted were leading remarkably similar lives. For example, in 1960 they were both very likely to have full -time jobs, work ing at least 40 hours a week. But as the social researcher Charles Murray has docume nted, as we started to automate the economy, and 1960 is just about whe n computers started to be used by bus in esses, as we started to progressively inject tech no logy and automati on and digital stuff into the economy, the fortunes of Bill and Ted diverged a lot. Over this time frame, Ted has continued to hold a full -time job. Bill has n't. In many cases, Bill has left the economy en tirely, and Ted very rarely has. Over time, Ted's marriage has stayed quite happy. Bill's has n't. AndTed's kids have grow n up in a two -pare nt home, while Bill's absolutely have not over time. Other ways that Bill is dropping out of society? He's decreased his voti ng in preside ntial elect ions, and he's started to go to pris on a lot more ofte n. So I cannot tell a happy story about these social tren ds, and they don't show any sig ns of revers ing themselves. They're also true no matter which ethnic group or demographic group we look at, and they're actually gett ing so severe that they're in dan ger of overwhel ming even the amaz ing progress we made with the Civil Rights Movement. |And what my friends in Silicon Valley and Cambridge are overlooking is that they're Ted. They're livi ng these amazi ngly busy, productive lives, and they've got all the ben efits to show from that, while Bill isleading a very different life. They're actually both proof of how right Voltaire was whe n he talked about the ben efits of work, and the fact that it saves us from not one but three great evils.["Work saves a man from three great evils: boredom, vice and n eed." oltaire]—VSo with these challe nges, what do we do about them? The economic playbook is surprisingly clear, surprisingly straightforward, in the short term especially. The robots are not going to take all of our jobs in the next year or two, so the classic Econ 101 playbook is going to work just fine: Encourage entrepreneurship, double down on infrastructure, and make sure we're turning out people from our educational system with the appropriate skills. But over the Ion ger term, if we are moving into an economy that's heavy on tech no logy and light on labor, and we are, then we have to consider some more radical interventions, for example, someth ing like a guara nteed mi nimum in come. Now, that's probably maki ng some folk in this room uncomfortable, because that idea is associated with the extreme left wing and with fairly radical schemes for redistributing wealth. I did a little bit of research on this notion, and it might calm some folk dow n to know that the idea of a net guara nteed minimum in come has bee n champi oned by those frothi ng -at-the-mouth socialists Friedrich Hayek, Richard Nix on and Milt on Friedma n. And if you find yourself worried that someth ing like a guara nteed in come is going to stifle our drive to succeed and make us kind of complace nt, you might be in terested to know that social mobility, one of the things we really pride ourselves on in the United States, is now lower than it is in the northern Europea n coun tries that have these very gen erous social safety n ets. So the econo mic playbook is actually pretty straightforward. The societal one is a lot more challe ngin g. I don't know what the playbook is for gett ing Bill to en gage and stay en gaged throughout life.I do know that education is a huge part of it. I witnessed this firsthand. I was a Montessori kid for the first few years of my education, and what that education taught me is that the world is an in terest ing place and my job is to go explore it. The school stopped in third grade, so the n I en tered the public school system, and it felt like I had bee n sent to the Gulag. With the ben efit of hindsight, I now know the job was to prepare me for life as a clerk or a laborer, but at the time it felt like the job was to kind of bore me into some submissi on with what was going on around me. We have to do better tha n this. We cannot keep turning out Bills. So we see some gree n shoots that things are gett ing better. We see tech no logy deeply impact ing educati on and en gagi ng people, from our youn gest lear ners up to our oldest on es. We see very prominent bus in ess voices telli ng us we n eed to rethi nk some of the things that we've been holding dear for a while. And we see very serious and sustained and data -driven efforts to un dersta nd how to in tervene in some of the most troubled com mun ities that we have.So the gree n shoots are out there. I don't want to prete nd for a minute that what we have is going to be eno ugh. We're facing very tough challe nges. To give just one example, there are about five millio n America ns who have bee n un employed for at least six mon ths. We're not going to fix things for them by sending them back to Montessori. And my biggest worry is that we're creating a world where we're going to have glitteri ng tech no logies embedded in ki nd of a shabby society and supported by an economy that gen erates in equality in stead of opport un ity.]But I actually don't think that's what we're going to do. I think we're going to do somethi ng a lot better for one very straightforward reason: The facts are getting out there. The realities of this new mach ine age and the cha nge in the economy are beco ming more widely known. If we wan ted to accelerate that process, we could do things like have our best econo mists and policymakers play "Jeopardy!" aga inst Wats on. We could send Con gress on an aut onom ous car road trip. And if we do eno ugh of these kinds of thin gs, the aware ness is going to sink in that things are going to be different. And then we're off to the races, because I don't believe for a second that we have forgotte n how to solve tough challe nges or that we have become too apathetic or hard -hearted to even try.I started my talk with quotes from wordsmiths who were separated by an ocea n and a cen tury. Let me end it with words from politicia ns who were similarly dista nt.Winston Churchill came to my home of MIT in 1949, and he said, "If we are to bring thebroad masses of the people in every land to the table of abundan ce, it can only be by the tireless improveme nt of all of our means of tech nical producti on."Abraham Lincoln realized there was one other ingredient. He said, "I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to give them the plain facts."So the optimistic no te, great point that I want to leave you with is that the pla in facts of the mach ine age are beco ming clear, and I have every con fide nee that we're going to use them to chart a good course into the challe nging, abundant economy that we're creat ing.Thank you very much.。

What will humans look like in 100 years? Juan EnriquezHere's a question that matters.

[Is it ethical to evolve the human body?]【改造人体会出现道德问题吗】Because we're beginning to get all the tools together to evolve ourselves. And we can evolve bacteria and we can evolve plants and we can evolve animals, and we're now reaching a point where we really have to ask, is it really ethical and do we want to evolve human beings? And as you're thinking about that, let me talk about that in the context of prosthetics, prosthetics past, present, future.

So this is the iron hand that belonged to one of the German counts. Loved to fight, lost his arm in one of these battles. No problem, he just made a suit of armor, put it on, perfect prosthetic. That's where the concept of ruling with an iron fist comes from.

And of course these prosthetics have been getting more and more useful, more and more modern. You can hold soft-boiled eggs. You can have all types of controls, and as you're thinking about that, there are wonderful people like Hugh Herr who have been building absolutely extraordinary prosthetics. So the wonderful Aimee Mullins will go out and say, how tall do I want to be tonight? Or Hugh will say what type of cliff do I want to climb? Or does somebody want to run a marathon, or does somebody want to ballroom dance?

And as you adapt these things, the interesting thing about prosthetics is they've been coming inside the body. So these external prosthetics have now become artificial knees. They've become artificial hips. And then they've evolved further to become not just nice to have but essential to have.

So when you're talking about a heart pacemaker as a prosthetic, you're talking about something that isn't just, "I'm missing my leg," it's, "if I don't have this, I can die." And at that point, a prosthetic becomes a symbiotic relationship with the human body.

And four of the smartest people that I've ever met -- Ed Boyden, Hugh Herr, Joe Jacobson, Bob Lander -- are working on a Center for Extreme Bionics. And the interesting thing of what you're seeing here is these prosthetics now get integrated into the bone. They get integrated into the skin. They get integrated into the muscle. And one of the other sides of Ed is he's been thinking about how to connect the brain using light or other mechanisms directly to things like these prosthetics.

And if you can do that, then you can begin changing fundamental aspects of humanity. So how quickly you react to something depends on the diameter of a nerve. And of course, if you have nerves that are external or prosthetic, say with light or liquid metal, then you can increase that diameter and you could even increase it theoretically to the point where,as long as you could see the muzzle flash, you could step out of the way of a bullet. Those are the order of magnitude of changesyou're talking about.

This is a fourth sort of level of prosthetics. These are Phonak hearing aids, and the reason why these are so interesting is because they cross the threshold from where prosthetics are something for somebody who is "disabled" and they become something that somebody who is "normal" might want to actually have, because what this prosthetic does, which is really interesting, is not only does it help you hear, you can focus your hearing, so it can hear the conversation going on over there.
