One of my favorite ways to do this is by developing my own helping rituals(习惯). These little acts of kindness are opportunities to be of service and reminders of how good it feels to be kind and helpful. We live in a rural area of the San Francisco Bay Area. Most of what we see is beauty and nature. One of the exceptions to the beauty is the litter that some people throw out of their windows as they are driving on the rural roads. One of the few shortcomings to live in the remote areas is that public services, such as litter collection, are less available than those closer to the city.A helping ritual that I practice regularly with my two children is picking up litter in our surrounding area. We've become so accustomed to doing this that my daughters will often say to me in lovely voices, "There's some litter. Daddy, stop the car!" And if we have time, we will often pull over and pick it up. It may seem strange, but we actually enjoy it. We pick up litter in parks, on sidewalks, practically anywhere. Once I even saw a complete stranger picking up litter close to where we live. He smiled at me and said, "I saw you doing it, and it seemed like a good idea."Picking up litter is only one of an endless supply of possible helping rituals. You might like holding a door open for people, visiting lonely elderly people in nursing homes, or clearing snow off someone else's driveway. Think of something that seems effortless yet helpful. It's fun, personally rewarding, and sets a good example. Everyone wins.(1)What does the author think of developing a helping ritual?A It will be very easy.B It will be very difficult.C It helps us to be winners.D It makes us feel good about ourselves.(2)What do we know about the area where the writer lives in?A It's in the centre of San Francisco.B People can see beautiful scenery there.C It's very easy to find litter collection.D Few people drive on the rural road.(3)How does the author support his own opinion?A By sharing his own experience.B By listing reasons for giving help.C By explaining ways to be helpful.D By making a comparison with others.(4)What does the author mainly want to tell us?A Parents are the best teachers to their children.B Everyone should set good examples to others.C Small kind acts make the world a better place.D Protecting the environment will benefit all of us.3. If you’re c oncerned about climate change, should you feel guilty about hanging out online? Maybe not.Data, or information, is often processed and stored on a computer. A computer that provides data to other computers is called a server. Servers also store data such as videos, pictures and emails. A building that holds many servers is known as a data center. Without data centers and servers, we could not access websites on our own computers and phones every day. Some people worry that data centers use a lot of energy, which could be bad for the environment. But recent studies found that data centers do not use as much energy as they thought.Eric Masanet, a professor at Northwestern University, is the study’s main author. Masanet and his team looked at the energy used by data centers around the world, and found thatdata centers have improved. They saw a 20 percent energy improvement each year. These improvements are due to better servers. They use less energy than servers once did. Other technologies have also improved.Masanet said to make sure computers use energy effectively, some things need to happen. Businesses and governments should get involved. Countries need to be open about how much electricity their data centers use. Large data companies also need to source their electricity from renewable energy, such as sunlight and wind. For example, Google and Apple both purchased or generated enough renewable electricity to match 100 percent of theirdata center energy use in 2018.“People should care about the energy data centers need,” said Masanet. “But we don’t have to feel bad about staying connected.”(1)Why do people need data centers?A To help people reduce time on computers.B To store information and let them use websites.C To provide energy needed to run people’s phones.D To save data on the Internet instead of on servers(2)What caused data centers to have a 20 percent improvement in energy use?A Less fuel is being burned in the atmosphere.B Fewer people are online at the same time.C Servers and technologies have improved.D More information is stored in phones.(3)What does the underlined word “source” in paragraph 6 mean?A Measure.B Store.C Choose.D Obtain.(4)According to Eric Masanet, how to make sure computers use energy effectively?A Businesses and governments should be involved.B The boundaries of countries should be opened.C People need to spend less time online.D People need to rely on big data companies.4.Every year between May and September, all 54 employees of Basecamp, a Chicago-based web application company, have a short work week: just four days—a total of 32 hours. Also, they usually work five days a week for the rest of the year."That's plenty of time to get great work done. This is all we expect and all we want from people," says Jason Fried, a co-founder. "Working 50-, 60-, 70-plus hours is unnecessary. In fact, if you have to work 50-, 60-, 70-plus hours a week, there's a management problem."The company's summer workload must fit reduced hours, Mr. Fried insists, otherwise the benefits of a shorter week—to recover from work, enjoy time with family and pursue(追求)outside interests—would be undone. His new research finds that it is not just long hours that are harmful to employees' physicaland mental health. It is also the intensity(强度)of work. Moreover, it suggests that intense work harms career prospects. That is because unbearable hours and intensity are in the opposite direction, reducing the quality of the work. The research concludes that the level of intensity we apply to the work we do is generally "a stronger predictor of unfavourable outcomes than overtime work."The research compared people of similar jobs and education levels, and found they were more likely to suffer poorer happiness and worse career prospects, including satisfaction, security and promotion, when they worked at an intense level for long periods.(1)What do we know about Basecamp's four-day week?A It lasts nearly half a year.B The work pressure is too high.C There are some management problems.D Employees work more than 8 hours a day.(2)What does Mr. Fried intend to say in Paragraph 2?A Given plenty of time, people can do more.B To get work done well needs plenty of time.C People can do a job very well in a short work week.D A long work week is appropriate for reduced workload.(3)What does the research mentioned in the text want to tell us?A Getting much more rest.B Improving work quality.C Refusing a five-day work week.D Avoiding working too intensely.(4)What can be the best title for this text?A More Work, More ProfitsB Less Work, Less BenefitsC Shorter Week, Better RewardD Longer Hours, Higher Intensity二、七选五5. It designed a vibrating suit that enables deaf people to “feel” music through their skin. Consisting of a body harness (背带), ankle and wrist belts, the suit translates audio into a range of vibrating pulses that are felt at 24 contact points.Burtonhas been trialing the suit for four years.“The sound hits different parts of your body, ” saidBurton. “Maybe it will strikeme down in my ankles first. And then I’ll start to feel the vibrations in my back. And then I’ll feel some pulsations in my wrist.”The creators want to extends the tactile (触觉) musical experience beyond the deaf community. In 2018, they gave out 150 of the suits at a rock concert inLas Vegaswhere half the audience members were deaf and half were able to hear.Since then, Not Impossible Labs has been working to improve the technology and says it’s ready to go to market soon. Ulla Schitt, also a Ulum Dalska member, experienced the change while growing up in Alvdalen.“My parents spoke Efdalian with each other, and with my grandma and my aunts and uncles and everyone around,”Schit said. “But when they turned to me, they spoke Swedish.” Schitt said her parents spoke Swedish withher because that's what was spoken in schools. But people are getting creative in the fight to change that trend. Musicians are creating new songs with Elfdalian. Several children's books were also translated into EIfdalian, including Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. To her, losing Elfdalian would be an especially tragic (悲剧的) loss. “It's a part of our identity. The government said the state of emergency — set to last for about two weeks— would be “short and powerful”. Under the measures, bars will be required to close and big sporting events will be held without audience. The government has insisted that the Olympics will go ahead in July.Prime minister Yoshihide Suga announced the measures on Friday, saying they would begin on Sunday and remain in place until 11 May. In addition to to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo will be affected. Today, more and more animal and plant species are on the way to extinction because of a variety of major factors that cause a species to become endangered, and as you might expect, humans play a role in quite a few of them — in fact, the biggest threat to endangered animals is human encroachment (侵入) on their habitats.Every species needs a habitat, where an animal finds food, raises its young. Unfortunately, humans destroy animal habitats in a number of different ways: building houses, clearing forests to getlumberand to plant crops, draining rivers to bring water to those crops, and making streets and parking lots.In addition, human development pollutes the environment with all kinds of chemicals, which destroys food sources and shelters for the creatures and plants of that area. As a result, some species die out while others are pushed into areas where they can’t find food and shelters — to make matters worse, when one animal populationsuffers, it affects many other species in its food web, so more than one species’population is likely to decrease.Habitat destruction is the number one reason for animal endangerment, which is why conservation groups work hard to repair the effects of human developments — many non-profit groups like the Nature Conservancy are taking measures to clean up coastlines and establish nature preserves to prevent further harm to native environments and species around the world.12. A species is considered endangered________.A. when the IUCN has noticed its population changeB. when most of its population has died offC. when the species’ birth rate is close to its death rateD. when the species is losing its habitat13. What does the underlined word “lumber” probably mean?A. Gas.B. Food.C. Chemicals.D. Wood.14. What is being done to protect the endangered species?A. Calling for human development.B. Raising money.C. Establishing nature preserves.D. Educating people.15. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Habitat destruction causes animal endangerment.B. Animals die out due to environment pollution.C. 2019-2020学年重庆市巴蜀中学高三英语下学期期末考试试题及答案第一部分阅读(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项ANo one knows when the first printing press was invented or who invented it. but the oldest known printed text originated in China during the first millennium (千年) AD.The Diamond Sutra (《金刚经》), a Buddhist book from Dunhuang, China during the Tang Dynasty, is said to be the oldest known printed book. The Diamond Sutrawas created with a method known as block printing (雕版印刷), which used boards of hand-carved wood blocks in reverse. It was said that the moveable type was developed by Bi Sheng. He was fromYingshan,Hubei,China, living from 970 to 1051 AD. His method replaced panels of printing blocks with moveable individual Chinese characters that could be reused. The first moveable Chinese Characters were carved into clay and baked into hard blocks that were then arranged onto an iron frame that was pressed against an iron plate. The earliest mention of Bi Sheng’s printing press is in the bookDream Pool Essays, written in 1086 by Shen Kuo, who noted that his nephews came into possession of Bi Sheng’s typefaces (字体) after his death. Shen Kuo explained that Bi Sheng did not use wood because the texture is inconsistent (不一致的) and absorbs wetness too easily.By the time of the Southern Song Dynasty, which ruled from 1127 to 1279 AD, books had become popular in society and helped create a scholarly class of citizens who had the capabilities to become civil servants. Large printed book collections also became a status symbol for the wealthy class.1. When was Bi Sheng’s printing press first introduced in history?A. After Bi Sheng died and his nephews owned his typefaces.B. When books became popular in the Southern Song Dynasty.C. After the block printing was replaced by the moveable type printing.D. WhenThe Diamond Sutrawas printed into a book.2. What can we infer from the passage?A. Shen Kuo made great contributions to printing.B. The moveable type printing was invented earlier than block printing.C. Printed books were hard to get in the Song Dynasty.D. By the Southern Song Dynasty, books had helped people get to higher social positions.3. Why does the author write this passage?A. To show that Buddhism was popular in the Tang Dynasty.B. To introduce the early history of printing.C. To memorize Bi Sheng, developing the moveable type printing.D. To indicate the advantages of moveable type printing.BWhen I was seven my father gave me a Timex, my first watch. I loved it, wore it for years, and haven’t had another one since it stopped ticking a decade ago. Why? Because I don’t need one. I have a mobile phone and I’m always near someone with an iPod or something like that. All these devices (装置) tell the time — which is why, if you look around, you’ll see lots of empty wrists; sales of watches to young adults have been going down since 2007. This is ridiculous. Expensive cars go faster than cheap cars. Expensive clothes hang better than cheap clothes. But these days all watches tell the time as well as all other watches. Expensive watches come with extra functions — but who needs them? How often do you dive to 300 metres into the sea or need to find your direction in the area around the South Pole? So why pay that much of five years’ school fees for watches that allow you to do these things? If justice were done, the Swiss watch industry should have closed down when the Japanese discovered how to make accurate watches for a five-pound note. Instead the Swiss reinvented the watch, with the aid of millions of pounds’ worth of advertising, as a message about the man wearing it. Rolexes are for those who spend their weekends climbing icy mountains; a Patek Philippe is for one from a rich or noble family; a Breitling suggests you like to pilot planesacross the world.Watches are now classified as “investments” (投资). A 1994 Philippe recently sold for nearly £ 350,000, while 1960s Rolexes have gone from £ 15,000 to £ 30,000 plus in a year. But a watch is not an investment. It’s a toy for self-satisfaction, a matter of fashion. Prices may keep going up — they’ve been rising for 15 years. But when of fashion. Prices may keep going up — they’ve been rising for 15 years. But when fashion moves on, the owner of that £ 350,000 beauty will suddenly find his pride and joy is no more a good investment than my childhood Times.4. The author don’t need another watch because ________.A. he don’t like wearing a watchB. he has mobile phone and can ask someone for helpC. he has no sense of timeD. he thinks watches too expensive5. It seems ridiculous to the writer that________.A. expensive watches with unnecessary functions still sellB. expensive clothes sell better than cheap onesC. cheap cars don’t run as fast as expensive onesD. people dive 300 metres into the sea6. What can be learnt about Swiss watch industry from the passage?A. It wastes a huge amount of money in advertising.B. It’s hard for the industry to beat its competitors.C. It targets rich people as its potential customers.D. It’s easy for theindustry to reinvent cheap watches.7. Which would be the best title for the passage?A. Timex or Rolex?B. My Childhood TimexC. Watches? Not for Me!D. Watches----a Valuable CollectionCNowadays organic food hasbecome a fashion. Organic food sales reached a record of $ 45.2 billion in 2017, making it one of the fastest-growing parts of American agriculture. Some people may buy organic food for these reasons like resource cycling and biodiversity, but most people may choose organic food because they think it's healthier. While a small number of studies have shown relationships between eating organic food and reducing risks of being ill, no studies, up to now, have answered the question whether eating organic food can improve health.According to the United States Department of Agriculture(USDA), organic food does not suggest anything about health. In 20155 Miles McEvoy, then chief of the National Organic Program for the USDA, refused to admit any health benefits of organic food, saying the question has nothing to do with the National Organic Program. Instead, the USDA thinks that organic refers to a production method that increases cycling of resources keeps ecological balance, and protects biodiversity.I'm an environmental health scientist who has spent over 20 years studying pesticides that do harm to human beings. Several years ago, I was part of the study on whether an organic diet can reduce pesticide exposure. This study focused on a group of pesticides which have always been harmful to children's brain development. We found that children who ate traditional diets had nine times higher exposure to these pesticides than children whoate organic diets.Last month, I published a small study that suggested a path forward to answering the question whether eating organic food actually improves health. My study got a lot of attention. While the results were novel, they didn't answer the big question. As I toldThe New York Timesin 2003, “What does this really mean for the safety of my kids? But we don't know. Nobody does. It was true then, and it's still true now.”8. Why do most people prefer to buy organic food?A. For its health benefits.B. For biodiversity.C. For its delicious taste.D. For resource cycling.9. What does the USDA suggest about organic food?A. It can improve people's health.B. It is produced in an environment-friendly way.C. It can reduce risks of being ill.D. It has nothing to do with the National Organic Program.10. What can be concluded from the author's study?A. Pesticides don't harm children's brain.B. Traditional diets benefit people's health.C. Organic diets can reduce pesticide exposure.D. The results are meaningful to children's safety.11. What is the best title for the text?A.What Is Organic Food?B. Is Organic Food Healthier?C. How Should We Avoid Pesticides?D. What Are the Benefits of Organic Food?DYou've probably heard it suggested that you need to move more throughout the day, and as a general rule of thumb, that "more" is often defined as around 10,000 steps. With many Americans tracking their stepsvia new fitness-tracking wearables, or even just by carrying their phone, more and more people use the 10,000-step rule as their marker for healthy living. Dr. Dreg Hager, professor of computer science at Johns Hopkins, decided to take a closer look at that 10,000-step rule, and he found that usingitas a standard may be doing more harm than good for many.“It turns out that in 1960 in Japan they figured out that the average Japanese man, when he walked 10,000 steps a day burned something like 3,000 calories and that is what they thought the average person should consume so they picked 10,000 steps as a number” Hager said.According to Hager, asking everyone to shoot for 10,000 steps each day could be harmful to the elderly or those with medical conditions, making it unwise for them to jump into that level of exercise, even if it's walking. The bottom line is that 10,000 steps may be too many for some and too few for others. He also noted that thosewith shorter legs have an easier time hitting the 10,000-step goal because they have to take more steps than people with longer legs to cover the distance. It seems that 10,000 steps may be suitable for the latter.A more recent study focused on older women and how many steps can help maintain good health and promote longevity (长寿).The study included nearly 17,000 women with an average age of 72. Researchers found that women who took 4,400 steps per day were about 40% less likely to die during a follow-up period of just over four years: Interestingly, women in the study who walked more than 7,500 steps each day got no extra boost in longevity.12. What does the underlined word "it' in Paragraph 1 refer to?A. The phone recording.B. The 10,000-step rule.C. The healthy living.D. The fitness-tracking method.13. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?A. How many steps a Japanese walks.B. How we calculate the number of steps.C. If burning 3,000 calories daily is scientific.D. Where 10,000 steps a day came from.14. Who will probably benefit from 10,000 steps each day according toHager?A. Senior citizens.B. Young short-legged people.C. Healthy long-legged peopleD. Weak individuals.15. How many steps may the researchers suggest senior citizens take each day?A. 4,400 steps.B. 10,000 steps.C. 2,700 steps.D. 7,500 steps.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

America.Upon check﹣in,I was directed to a sweet woman nestling warmly next to the fireplace, who kindly reminded us that there would be no lockers or Internet access and that we'd better eat a heavy meal.Following her advice,we ate everything on our plates at dinner even if we were full. But we couldn't free us from our anxiety at that point. When dessert came,we started calling other hotels to see if they had any openings. When the eighth hotel we called wanted to charge us about $80more than the online price,we just decided to go back to sleep on a bed of ice.Once in the room,we began trying to figure out how to get comfortable in a room full of ice.Have you tried taking off your shoes in a room in which the floor is ice and not get your socks wet?It took me three yoga (瑜伽)positions to get this accomplished.Rolling around to get all the way into the bag,I zipped myself up and said my good nights. And then I felt this sharp pain in my head.My hat had metal bands on it.The metal was getting cold in the…well…cold.I took my hat off and my head started to get cold.I sunk down further into my sleeping bag and thought to myself,"Well,at least if I die in here,it will be in my sleep."The next thing I knew, the hotel staff was giving us a real wake﹣up call (they stand outside your room and tell you to get up!).The reward of having slept in a hotel made of ice? Now,no matter The Harlem Renaissance took place during the 1920s.It was a time when the African American artistic community grew and flourished, producing a ton of works in a short period of time. These works celebrated African American culture and spoke to their experiences as minorities ﹣both the good parts and the bad parts. After the Civil War,many African Americans left the South to escape unfair treatment and laws that were against them.Between 1910 and 1920,massive numbers of black Southerners moved from the rural south into the urban North and West in the Great Migration. The African American population of Chicago more than doubled during that time! And in New York,African Americans flocked to uptown Manhattan, settling in a neighborhood called Harlem.Forming a community within the big city let African Americans keep their cultural identity in a white﹣dominated society. It was a good thing, and a lot of important cultural issues were brought to light during the Harlem Renaissance. One of the most important figures of the time was the African American writer,W.E.B.Du Bois.In his book,The Souls of Black Folk,in 1903,Du Bois wrote that African Americans suffered from something called "double consciousness".They had their own self﹣image while they saw themselves through the eyes of white Americans. And performers like Josephine Baker and Paul Robeson brought African American culture to all New Yorkers. The Renaissance was so influential that "Harlem" grew into somethingof a brand name.African Americans were pushing boundaries across all aspects of society.Black businesses began to flourish, creating a growing middle class, like Madame C.J.Walker,who turned her cosmetics line into a million dollar empire. All together, the artists, and thinkers of this period helped mobilize the larger black population.Young African﹣Americans attended universities, which opened up new career paths and opportunities to attain advanced degrees.Perhaps most importantly, people ﹣black and white ﹣﹣﹣began the push for racial integration, planting the seeds of what would eventually become the civil rights movement of the 1960s.(1)Why did many African Americans leave the South after the Civil War?A.To escape slavery.B.To find jobs in agriculture.C.To gain citizenship.D.To avoid racial discrimination.(2)How did W.E.B.Du Bois contribute to the Harlem Renaissance?A.He led to movement to return to Africa.B.He produced tons of artistic works for African placeD.a brand(4)What allowed more African Americans to pursue careers in fields like medicine and law?A.Access to higher education.B.Spread of black businesses.C.Shift from agriculture to industry.D.Push for unity among all Africans.14.(8分)Are there any practical purposes for the number zero,or could we function just as well without it?Zero describes the absence of something, and while on scales such as those used for temperature, zero has a defined meaning,in general,it doesn't seem to be as useful as many other numbers. If you agree with the notion that the number zero is not particularly valuable, then you probably have not considered the most important use for this number,a use that you see every day and most likely take for granted. The number,or more precisely, the digit zero, makes our positional system of numbers possible.Without zero, the numerals for three hundred two and for thirty﹣two would be indistinguishable from each other ﹣and from many other numbers as well. The use of zero keeps the digits in their correct places,so that the place value of each digit is immediately apparent. You know at a glance thatthe 3in 302has a value of 3 hundreds and not 3thousands or 3tenths or some other quantity. The place of each digit shows its value, and zeros keep the digits in the correct places. So,what is so remarkable? You may be thinking.Aren't all number systems positional with some kind of place value system? The truth is that not all number systems are of this nature, and that most very early number systems were not positional.Roman numerals, which are still used today for a few applications, are positional but do not include a symbol for zero.Egyptian numerals included no zero and had no positional values. One early number system that did include zero was that employed by the Maya in Central America. For the most part, however, the use of a symbol for zero was a relatively late introduction in methods used to record quantities.(1)In a positional number system, the value of a zero .A.indicates a large numberB.is sometimes equal to zeroC.changes depending on its positionD.is always greater than zero(2)The writer shows that zero is needed .A.to compare numbersB.in every type of number systemC.because the Maya used itD.to make a number system positional(3)What does the underlined word "apparent" in paragraph 2 most probably mean?A.Mistaken.B.Understood.C.Written.D.Forgotten.(4)Why are examples of Roman and Egyptian numerals used in the third paragraph?A.To explain why people have wrong ideas.B.To list the advantages of early number systems.C.To show that all number systems are not positional.D.To indicate why zero was a relatively late introduction.第二节(满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.15.(10分)All of us want to be better at something. If you want to better yourself so as to get ahead at work, here are some general rules you can follow.Check your readinessWhen working on a new skill or competency, you need to ask yourself two questions.First,is your goal reachable?(1).For example, you may want to be a brain surgeon, but not have the eye﹣hand coordination (协调)required.Second, how much time and energy can you devote to the project? Many people mistakenly believe that hard work means a lack of ability.(2)Know how you learn bestSome learn best by looking at graphics or reading.Others would rather watch demonstrations or listen to things being explained.(3).You can figure out your ideal learning style by looking back.Reflect on some of your past learning experiences, and make a list of good ones and another list of bad ones.(4)One of the quickest ways to learn something new,and to practice it is to teach others how to do it.So share what you learn with your team, your manager,or your co﹣workers. You can force yourself to do it by agreeing to lead a formal training session a few months down the road. With objectives like those, your learning will be much more focused and practical.Start smallSelf﹣improvement can be stressful.(5)If you do,you'll never do it.Instead, choose one or two skills to focus on at a time, and break that skill down into manageable goals.A.You can't take on everything.B.Challenge to teach it to others.C.Self﹣improvement is too hard to realize.D.Still others need a "hands﹣on" experience.E.There are certain limits to what you can learn.F.Instead,recognize that learning a new skill takes talent.G.Without a reachable goal and devotion, you won't go very Rubbish of all kinds is piling up in landfill and polluting our rivers and oceans. A more recent addition to the list of things we chuck away is e﹣waste ﹣ electronic items that are broken and not recycled. Now solutions are being found to give this stuff a new life. Many millions of tonnes of televisions, phones, and other electronic equipment are discarded each year, partly because it's cheaper to replace them than fix them, but also because we lack the skills to repair them. A UN report claims the 50 million tonnes of e﹣waste generated every year will more than double to 110 million tonnes by 2050, making it the fastest growing waste stream in the world. However, there's a growing trend for repair events and clubs which could be part of a solution to the growing amount of electrical and electronic junk. The BBC visited a Restart Project in London, which is one of many founded around the world. One of its volunteers, Francesco Calo, said that "this project allows you to reduce waste, extend the life of objects, and it helps people who cannot afford to get rid of items that have developed a fault."As many electrical items contain valuable metals, another idea is e﹣waste mining. An experiment at the University of New South Wales involves extracting (提取) these materials from electronic gadgets. It's thought that doing this could be more profitable than traditional mining. With phones typically containing as many as 60 element, this could be part of the solution to our appetite for new technology. These projects make total sense ﹣ collections of e﹣waste for recycling are "stagnating (停滞不前) or even decreasing" according to Ruediger Kuehr, of the United Nations University And in countries where there is no legislation, much of it just gets dumped. For over 40 years, gaokao has not only affected individual students, but also has had a significant impact on national development. In a move to fix talent shortages in the high﹣end chip, software design, intelligent technology, new materials and advanced manufacturing and social sciences, the Ministry of Education(MOE) announced a new college enrollment plan ﹣ called the "strengthening basic disciplines plan (强基计划)" ﹣ that will start this year. The pilot plan has been rolled out in the country's top 36 universities. By May 13, all schools had released their distinctive enrollment plans, encouraging senior high students with special talents to sign up.Before the end of May, students can apply to one of the 36 participating universities. Enrollment policies vary by university, with admission limits set from dozens of students to 200.These universities also detailed their recruitment procedure. After the results of gaokao are released, schools will release lists of qualifying students, who either excel in gaokao, or have won first or second prizes in Olympiads with gaokao scores at least higher than the first round of register lines. These applicants will then receive additional tests and interviews. The final enrollment decision is heavily based on the gaokao score, which will remain the most important criterion(标准), accounting for more than 85 percent of the final result, says MOE.The universities have announced that they will also consider physical tests as a reference for submission(录取), according to China Youth Daily.Once the students are enrolled, they are expecting an intensive educational program. For example, Tsinghua University has set up five schools, offering courses in chemical biology, information and computing science, theory and applied mechanics as theirdominant disciplines.

AIn the age of social distancing, using robots for some health care interactions is a promising way to reduce in-person contact between health care workers and sick patients. However, a key question is how patients will react to a robot entering the room. Researchers from MIT and Brigham and Women’s Hospital recently set out to answer that question. In a study, the team found that a large majority of patients reported that interacting with a health care provider through a video screen fixed on a robot was similar to an in-person interaction with a health care worker.“We’re working on robots that can help provide care to ensure the safety of the patient and the health care workforce. The results of this study give us some confidence that people are ready and willing to join us. In a larger online survey carried out nationwide, we also found that a majority of respondents were open to having robots perform small tasks such as taking a nose swab (拭子).” says Giovanni Traverso, an MIT assistant professor and the senior author of the study. After the COVID-19 pandemic began early last year, Traverso and his colleagues turned their attention toward new strategies to reduce interactions between potentially sick patients and health care workers. To that end, they created a mobile robot that could interact with patients as they waited in the emergency department. The robots were equipped with sensors that allow them to measure vital signs, including skin temperature, breathing rate, and pulse(脉搏) rate. The robots also carried an iPad for remote video communication with a health care provider. The study suggests that it could be worthwhile to develop robots that can perform tasks that currently require a lot of human effort, such as turning a patient over in bed. These days, turning COVID-19 patients onto their stomachs requires several people. Doing Covid-19 tests is another task that takes a lot of time and effort from health care workers, who could be arranged for other tasks if robots could help.1. Why did the researchers from MIT and BWH carry out the studies?A. To shorten the social distance between doctors and patients.B. To figure out the response of patients to robotic doctors.C. To reduce the risk of being infected with coronavirus.D. To ensure the safety of patients during the pandemic.2. What could be learned from the study?A. Robots are not welcomed by patients.B. Robots will soon replace doctors.C. Robots may help to deal with Covid-19 patients.D. Robots can operate on different patients.3. Which of the following is the best title for the text?A. StrengthsAnd Weaknesses In Robot CareB. The Robotic Doctor Will See You NowC. The Robots Speed Up COVID-19 TestingD. The Development Of Robots In HospitalsBAddiction to smartphones will result in poor sleep, according to a new study. The study, published Tuesday in Frontiers in Psychiatry, looked at smartphone use among 1,043 students between the ages of 18 and 30at King's College London. Researchers asked the students to complete two questionnaires on their sleep quality and smartphone use, in person and online.Using a 10-question scale that was developed to judge smartphone addiction in children, nearly 40% of the university students qualified as "addicted" to smartphones, the study found. “Our findings are in agreement with other reported studies in young adult populations globally, which are in the range of 30-45%,” lead author Sei Yon Sohn and her co-authors wrote in the study. "Later time of use was also significantly connected with smartphone addiction, with use after 1 a.m. increasing a 3- times risk," the authors wrote.Students who reported high use of smartphones also reported poor sleep quality, the study found. That foils in line with previous studies that have found overuse of smartphones at night to be associated with trouble falling asleep, reduced sleep duration (睡眠持续时间)and daytime tiredness. That's likely because use of smartphones close to bedtime has been shown to delay the body's normal sleep - and - wake clock. In fact, the No. 1 rule is "no computers, cell phones, and ipads in bed and at least one hour beforebed Dr. Vsevolod Polotsky, who directs sleep basic research, said in a recent interview. That's because "any LED light source from electronics (电子设备)may further hold back melatonin (褪黑激素)levels," Polotsky said. Melatonin is often referred to as a "sleep hormone," because we sleep better during the night when levels reach the top.“This is a cross-sectional study, and it cannot lead to any firm conclusions about smartphone use as the cause of reduced sleep quality, said Bob Patton, a lecturer in clinical psychology at the University of Surrey, via email.4. How did Sei Yon Sohn's team begin their study?A. By publishing researching papers.B. By responding to others’ concern.C. By collecting firsthand data.D. By turning to related experts.5. What did the study find about sleep quality and smartphone use?A. 30-45% of the university students are addicted to smartphones.B. High use of smartphones is related to poor sleep quality.C. Overuse of smartphones leads to shorter sleep duration.D. Use after 1 a.m. will result in smartphone addiction.6. What is Polotsky's opinion on electronics ?A. We should stop using them an hour before going to sleep.B. LED light source from them will delay normal sleep- and- wake clock.C. Reduced sleep quality has nothingto do with them.D. No electronics should be used in bed at any time.7. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Say No to SmartphonesB. Sleep Quality Can Be ImprovedC. LED Light Source Causes Great HarmD. Smartphone Addiction Ruins SleepCA study has found that a lifetime of regular exercise and activity can slow down the aging process (衰老过程). Researchers say that getting older should not necessarily mean becoming more weak or sick. Their research shows that a devotion to a life of movement and exercise may help us live not only longer, but also healthier. For their study, the researchers looked at two groups. The first group was made up of 125 non-professional cyclists between the ages of 55 to 79. This group included 84 healthy men and 41 healthy women. We will call this group the “cyclists”.Researchers then found 130 people to make up a second group. Within this group, 75 people were aged from 57 to 80. The other 55 were between the ages of 20 and 36. The people in this group were also healthy, but they did not exercise regularly. We will call this group the “non-exercisers”. Smokers, heavy drinkers of alcohol and people with other health issues were not included in the study. Then, researchers gave both groups a series of tests. They tested their muscle mass (肌肉质量), muscularstrength, percentage of body fat and the strength of their immune (免疫的) systems. Then the researchers compared the results of the two groups. Results showed that the cyclists did not experience body changes usually regarded as a normal aging process. For example, they did not lose muscle mass or muscular strength. Also, their body fat did not increase with age.The researchers also found something they had not expected. The study showed that the immune systems of the cyclists did not age either. The researchers advise us all to find an exercise that we like in our lives.8. How did the researchers carry out the study?A. By comparing.B. By discussing.C. By imagining.D. By reasoning.9. Which of the following is a result of the research?A. The cyclists kept a thin body shape.B. The non-exercisers gained weight easily.C. The cyclists’ muscles remained strong with age.D. The non-exercisers usually had health problems.10. Which is an unexpected result for the researchers?A. The cyclists had normal aging process.B. The cyclists’ immune systems didn’t age.C. The cyclists lost nearly all their fat.D. Everyone needed an exercise in their lives.11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Healthy People Need More ExerciseB. Take an Exercise, the Harder, the BetterC. Cycling Is the Best Way to Prevent AgingD. A Lifetime of Exercise Slows Aging ProcessDMost children who have suffered from ADHD still have it as teens. During teen years, especially as the hormonal changes of teenagers are going on and the demands of school and extra-curricular activities are increasing, ADHD may get worse.Because of problems with getting unfocused and poor concentration, many teens with ADHD have problemsin school. Grades may fall, especially if the teen is not getting ADHD treatment. It’s not uncommon for teens with ADHD to forget their homework, lose textbooks, and become bored with their daily class work. Teens may become inattentive or extremely attentive, not waiting for their turn before blurting out answers. They may cut in on their teacher and classmates. Teens with ADHD may also befidgetyand find it hard to sit still in class.Often, teens with ADHD are so busy focusing on other things that they forget about the task at hand. This can be seen especially with homework and athletic skills and in relationships with their schoolmates. This lack of attention to what they’re doing often leads to bad grades on tests and being passed over for sports teams, after-school activities, and learning teams. Kids with ADHD can be targets for bullying, too. But, not all children with ADHD have trouble getting along with others. If your child does, you can take measures to help improve their social skills and relationships.ADHD affects all parts of a teenager’s life. As a parent you should discover your teen’s troubles as early as possible. The earlier your child’s troubles are discovered, the more successful the following steps can be.12.
