Usespecific examples and personal feelings to illustrate your points. Remember to organize your thoughts logically and use proper grammar and vocabulary.Sample Essay:“My First Impression of Middle School Life”Stepping into the gates of my new middle school for the very first time,I was filled with a mix of excitement and nervousness. The towering buildings, bustling crowds, and the unfamiliar faces all contributed to a sense of adventure that lingered in the air. As I embarked on this new chapter of my academic journey, three aspects of middle school life stood out, leaving indelible impressions on me.Firstly, the academic rigor was a stark contrast to my elementary school days. The curriculum seemed vast and challenging, with each subjectdemanding more depth and critical thinking. English, in particular, captivated me with its intricate grammar rules and engaging literature.Remembering my first English lesson, we delved into a classic short story, analyzing characters and themes that sparked lively discussions in our class. The te acher’s passion for the subject ignited a spark within me, making me realize the beauty and power of language.Secondly, the diversity of extracurricular activities was overwhelming. From robotics clubs to debate societies, there was something for everyone’s interests. I joined the school’s drama club, which not only allowed me to express myself creatively but also taught me the importance of teamwork and collaboration. Participating in rehearsals and performances boosted my confidence and helped me make new friends from different backgrounds. These experiences broadened my horizons and enriched my school life beyond academics.Lastly, the sense of independence and responsibility that came with middle school was both daunting and empowering. With longer school hours and more self-study time, I had to learn to manage my time effectively. Balancing homework, extracurricular activities, and personal interests became a daily challenge. However, overcoming these obstacles taught me valuable life skills such as time management, prioritization, and self-discipline. I began to appreciate the importance of setting goals and working towards them, knowing that my efforts would shape my future. In conclusion, my first impression of middle school life was one of growth, discovery, and transformation. The academic challenges, diverse extracurricular opportunities, and the fostering of independence have allcontributed to a fulfilling and enriching experience. As I continue to navigate through this exciting phase, I am eager to embrace new challenges, make lasting friendships, and strive for excellence in all aspects of my life.。

That' s the way most parents are living their lives, no weekends of their own, no time to visit friends, not even a chance of promotion in their jobs.Asking help from their parents might be a way out,but problems are that some aging parents are not strong enough to take care of the kids, and that the kids may also become too spoiled by their grandparents. Then, here comes a solution: families with kids can form a small group, and parents of each family can take turns to look after all the kids in this group on weekends. Thus, other parents can have some quiet time and feel free to do something they' ve been planning for a long time. It found that human-influenced climate change was raising the global death rates from illnesses including malnutrition (营养不良) and heat-related health problems. But even before its release, the report drew criticism from some experts on climate and risk, who questioned its methods and conclusions.Along with the deaths, the report said that the lives of 325 million people, primarily in poor countries, were being seriously affected by climate change. It projected that the number would double by 2030.Roger Pielke Jr.a political scientist at the University of Colorado, Boulder, who studies disaster trends, said the Forum’s report was “a methodological embarrassment” because there was no way to distinguish deaths or economic losses related to human-driven global warming amid the much larger losses resulting from the growth in populations and economic development in vulnerable (易受伤害的) regions. Dr. Pielke said that “climate change is an important problem requiring our utmost attention.” But the report, he said, “will harm the cause for action on both climate change and disasters because it is so deeply flawed (有瑕疵的).”However, Soren Andreasen, a social scientist at Dalberg Global Development Partners who supervised the writing of the report, defended it, saying that it was clear that the numbers were rough estimates. He said the report was aimed at world leaders, who will meet in Copenhagen in December to negotiate a new international climate treaty. In a press release describing the report, Mr. Annan stressed the need for the negotiations to focus on increasing the flow of money from rich to poor regions tohelp reduce their vulnerability to climate hazards while still curbing the emissions of the heat-trapping gases. More than 90% of the human and economic losses from climate change are occurring in poor countries, according to the report. 71.What is the finding of the Global Humanitarian Forum?A.Global temperatures affect the rate of economic development.B.Rates of death from illnesses have risen due to global warming. C.Malnutrition has caused serious health problems in poor countries. D.Economic trends have to do with population and natural disasters.72. What do we learn about the Forum’s report from the passage?A.It was challenged by some climate and risk experts.B.It aroused a lot of interest in the scientific circles.C.It was warmly received by environmentalists.D.It caused a big stir in developing countries.73. What does Dr. Pielke say about the Forum’s report?A.Its statistics look embarrassing.B.It is invalid in terms of methodology.C.It deserves our closest attention.D.Its conclusion is purposely exaggerated.74. What is Soren Andreasen’s view of the report?A.Its conclusions are based on carefully collected data.B.It is vulnerable to criticism if the statistics are closely examined.C.It will give rise to heated discussions at the Copenhagen conference.D.Its rough estimates are meant to draw the attention of world leaders.75.What does Kofi Annan say should be the focus of the Copenhagen conference? A.How rich and poor regions can share responsibility in curbing global warming. B.How human and economic losses from climate change can be reduced.C.How emissions of heat-trapping gases can be reduced on a global scale. D.How rich countries can better help poor regions reduce climate hazards.Passage 4Reaching new peaks of popularity in North America is Iceberg Water, which is harvested from icebergs off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.Arthur von Wiesenberger, who carries the title Water Master, is one of the few water critics in North America. As a boy, he spent time in the larger cities of Italy, France and Switzerland, where bottled water is consumed daily. Even then, he kept a water journal, noting the brands he liked best. “My dog could tell the difference between bottled and tap water,” He says. But is pla in tap water all that bad? Not at all. In fact, New York’s municipal water for more than a century was called the champagne of tap water and until recently considered among the best in the world in terms of both taste and purity. Similarly,a magazine in England found that tap water from the Thames River tasted better than several leading brands of bottled water that were 400 times more expensive.Nevertheless, soft-drink companies view bottled water as the next battle-ground for market share―this despite the fact that over 25 percent of bottled water comes from tap water: PepsiCo’s Aquafina and Coca-Cola’s Dasani are both purified tap water rather than spring water. As diners thirst for leading brands, bottlers and restaurateurs salivate (垂涎) over the pro fits. A restaurant’s typical mark-up on wine is 100 to 150 percent, whereas on bottled water it’s often 300 to 500 percent. But since water is much cheaper than wine, and many of the fancier brands aren’t available in stores, most diners don’t notice or ca re.As a result, some restaurants are turning up the pressure to sell bottled water. According to an article in The Street Journal, some of the more shameless tactics include placing attractive bottles on the table for a visual sell, listing brands on the menu without prices, and pouring bottled water without even asking the diners if they want it.Regardless of how it’s sold, the popularity of bottled water taps into our desire for better health, our wish to appear cultivated, and even a longing for lost purity.76. What do we know about Iceberg Water from the passage?A.It is a kind of iced water.B. It is just plain tap water.C .It is a kind of bottled water.D .It is a kind of mineral water.77. By saying “My dog could tell the difference bet ween bottled and tap water (Line4 Para2), Von Wiesenberger wants to convey the message that ________.A .plain tap water is certainly unfit for drinkingB .bottled water is clearly superior to tap waterC. bottled water often appeals more to dogs tasteD. dogs can usually detect a fine difference in taste78. The-fancier brands (Line 3 Para 5) refers to ________.A. tap water from the Thames RiverB. famous wines not sold in ordinary storesC.PepsiCo’s Aquafina and Coca-Cola’s DasaniD. expensive bottled water with impressive names79. Why are some restaurants turning up the pressure to sell bottled water?A. Bottled water brings in huge profits.B. Competition from the wine industry is intense.C. Most diners find bottled water affordable.D. Bottled water satisfied diners’ desire to fashionable.80. According to passage, why is bottled water so popular?A. It is much cheaper than wine.B. It is considered healthier.C.It appeals to more cultivated people.D. It is more widely promoted in the market.Part IV Translation(2×10)Directions: There are 10 sentences in this part. Please translate sentences 81-85 from Chinese into English, and translate sentences 86-90 from English into Chinese,Write your answer on the Answer Sheet.81.只要明天天气好,我们就和同学一起去游泳。

The earth is gettin g warmer. Over the past 100 years Earth’s temperature rose by about 1°F. Scientists predict that Earth will continue to warm by about 2—6°Fover the next 100 years. That may not sound like much, but think about this: During the last Ice Age, Earth was only 9°F cooler than it is today, and large sheets of ice called glaciers(冰河) covered large parts of North America! The warming of Earth’s climate is called global warmingScientists are not sure of what causes climate change. Earth could be warming on its own, however, most scientists believe that human activity is speeding up the climate change. Earth warms itself through a process called the greenhouse(温室) effect. When sunlight enters Earth’s atmosphere(大气), it passes through a layer of greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases occur naturally, but humans also create them by burning fossil fuels. When sunlight hits Earth’s surface itbounces_back toward the sky. The greenhouse gases trap some of the sunlight on Earth and allow the rest to go back into space, making Earth’s temperature warm. The process works much in the same way as a greenhouse, hence its name. If there are too many greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, too much sunlight may be trapped, making Earth warmer.Scientists cannot pr edict exactly what will happen as Earth’s temperature rises. They believe a rapid climate change could upset the balance of the ecosystem(生态系统), causing some land and marine(海产的) life to become extinct. As temperatures rise, the world’s glaciers will melt(融化)into the ocean, causing sea levels to rise between several inches to three feet during the next 100 years. Higher sea levels could cause flooding of coastal lands. Warmer ocean water could cause increased storm activity on the coasts while areas away from the coasts may experience droughts. These are just a few of the possible effects of global warming.1.The best title for this text would be________.A.Climate B.Climate ChangeC.Global Warming D.Greenhouse Effect2.Humans create greenhouse gases every time EXCEPT we________.A.play video gamesB.use a hair dryerC.ride in a carD.use solar energy lights3.Which of the following is NOT the effect of climate change?A.Rising temperature.B.The extinction of some wildlife.C.Sea level rising.D.Flooding of coastal lands.4.Which of the following words has the similar meaning as the underlined phrase in the second paragraph?A.Throw. B.Rebound.C.Go.

The question of what children learn, and how they should learn, is continually being debated and redebated. Nobody dares any longer to defend the old system, the learning of lessonsparrot-fashion, the grammar-with-a-whip system, which was good enough for our grandparents. The theories of modem psychology have stepped in to argue that we must understand the need of children. Children are not just small adults; they are children who must be respected as much. Well, you may say, this is as it should be, a good idea. But think further. What happens? "Education" becomes the responsibility not of teachers, but of psychologists (心里学家). What happens then? Teachers worry too much about the psychological implications (暗示) of their lessons, and forget about the subjects themselves. If a child dislikes a lesson, the teacher feels that it is his fault, not the child’s. So teachers worry whether history is "relevant" to modern young children. And do they dare to recount stories about violence? Or will this make the children themselves violent? Can they tell their classes about children of different races, or will this encourage racial hatred? Why teach children to write grammatical sentences? Verbal expression is better. Sums? Arithmetic? No: Real-life mathematical situations are more understandable. You see, you can go too far. Influenced by educational theorists, who have nothing better to do than to write books about their ideas, teachers leave their teacher-training colleges filled with grand, psychological ideas about children and their needs. They make elaborate, sophisticated (精致的,复杂的) preparations and try out their "modem methods" on the long-suffering children. Since one "modem method" rapidly replaces another the poor kids will have had a good bellyful by the time they leave school. Frequently the modem methods are so sophisticated that they fail to be understood by the teachers, let alone the children; even more often, the relaxed discipline so essential for the " informal" feelings the class must have, prevents all but a handful of children from learning anything.1. People do not dare defend the old system mainly because under the old system________.A. too much grammar was taught to childrenB. children were spoiled (宠坏)C. children were treated as grown-upsD. children were made to learn passively(被动的)2. What view do the modem psychologists hold?A. Children must be understood and respected.B. Children are small adults and know what they need.C. Children are better off without learning lessons.D. Education of children is the responsibility of psychologists.3. What happens when teachers pay too much attention to the psychology of their lessons?A. They find that the children dislike the lessons.B. They tend to blame students for their failure.C. They do not pay enough attention to the actual lessons.D. They no longer want to teach children history.4. Grammatical sentences are regarded as unimportant because ________.A. it is better to use verbs onlyB. words are said out of natural feelings onlyC. talking freely and naturally without sentences is a better form of expressionD. it is felt that formal grammar rules might cause unnatural expressions5. According to the passage, the modern methods are understood by ________.A. neither teachers nor pupilsB. only a handful of teachers and pupilsC. the more sophisticated teachersD. everyone who enjoys the relaxed discipline of the informal classes。
