2019年初级商务英语阅读理解试题(1)A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly(肚子) or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other peoples rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar(奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to work in that way.Now the very same thing is true to literature(文学). And the question, How shall I begin? only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(有经验的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you become more experienced you willnever ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail --that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning.1. 2019 商务英语BEC 中级考试阅读理解练习题(1) 【BEC】第一篇:THE ART OF PERSUASIONLet me send you our brochure ’is probably the most commonlyused phrase in business. But all too often, it can spell theend of a customer enquiry because many brochures appear to beproduced not to clarify and to excite but to confuse. So whatgoes wrong and how can it be put right? Too often, businessesfail to ask themselves critical questions like, ’Who willthe brochure be sent to? ’’What do we want to achieve withit? ’The truth is that a brochure has usually been producedfor no other reason than that the competition has one. However, with a little research, it often transpires thatwhat the client wants is a mixture :part mail shot, partglossy corporate brochure and part product catalogue - acombination rarely found. Having said that, the budget islikely to be finite. There may not be enough money to meetall three marketing needs, so the first task is to plan thebrochure, taking into account the most significant of these. The other requirements will have to be met in a different way. After all, introducing the company ’s product range to newcustomers by mail is a different task from selling a newseason’s collection to existing customers. The second task is to get the content right. In 95 per centof cases, a company will hire a designer to oversee thelayout, so the final product looks stylish, interesting andprofessional; but they don ’t get a copywriter or someonewith the right expertise to produce the text, or at leasttidy it up - and this shows. A bigger failing is to produce abrochure that is not customer focused. Your brochure shouldcover areas of interest to the customer, concentrating on thebenefits of buying from you.Instead, thousands of brochures start with a historylesson, ’Founded in 1987, we have been selling ourproducts .. I can assure you that customers are never goingto say to themselves, ’They’ve been around for 20 years - I ’ll buy from them. ’It ’s not how long you ’ve been in business that counts, it ’s what you ’ve done in that time. The important point to get across at the beginning is thatyou have a good track record. Once this has been established, the rest of the brochure should aim to convince customersthat your products are the best on the market. It is helpful with content to get inside the customer ’s head. If your audience is young and trendy, be creative and colourful. As always, create a list of the benefits thatpotential customers would gain from doing business with you,for example, product quality, breadth of range, expertise ofstaff and so on. But remember that it is not enough just tostate these; in order to persuade, they need to be spelt out.One possibility is to quote recommendations from existing customers. This also makes the brochure personal to you, rather than it simply being a set of supplier s’photographs with your name on the front. At the design stage, there are many production features thatcan distinguish your brochure from the run of the mill. Youmay think that things like cutouts or pop-ups will do thisfor you and thus make you stand out, or you may think theyjust look like designer whims that add cost. Go through allthe options in detail. One of them might be that all-important magical ingredient.13 What point does the writer make about brochures in thefirst paragraph?A Customer expectations of them are too high.B They ought to be more straightforward in design.C Insufficient thought tends to go into producing them.D Companies should ensure they use them more widely.14 The writer ’s advice to companies in the second para graph is toA produce a brochure to advertise new product lines.B use a brochure to extend the customer base.C accept that a brochure cannot fulfil every objective.D aim to get a bigger budget allocation for producingbrochures.15 In the third paragraph, which of the following does thewriter say would improve the majority of brochures?A better language and expressionB better overall appearanceC more up-to-date contentD more product information16 In the introduction to a brochure, the writer advisescompanies to focus onA their understanding of the business environment.B the range of products they offer.C their unique market position.D the reputation they have built up.17 When discussing brochure content in the fifth paragraph, the writer reminds companies toA consider old customers as well as new ones.B provide support for the claims they make.C avoid using their own photographs.D include details of quality certification.18 What does ’run of the mill ’in line 67 mean?A eye-catchingB complicatedC stylishD ordinary第一篇参考答案与解析:《The art of persuasion 》,劝说的艺术。

2019年商务英语高级阅读试题(17)Human resource managementIt is nearly a century since the car manufacturer HenryFord said, ‘You can destroy my factories and offices, but giveme my people and I will build the business right back upagain.’(0) .....G..... But a few business theorists are beginning toargue that managing people well can add more to the bottomline than anything else.Mike Manzotti, a leading American author in this area, has strong views about the growingimportance of human resources in today’s business world. (8) .............. A company with high staffcommitment, for example, has an asset that its rivals find hard to copy.Research in Britain would appear to support this notion. A recent business school survey intothe performance of eight multinationals found that people management could be the most decisivefactor in a company’s performance. Another study indicated the same thing in medium-sizedmanufacturing firms. (9) .............. After all, how can an organisation evaluate the commitment ofits staff? For this reason, the researcher George Hessenberg argues that a scientific approach is needed. He feels that when HR professionals suggest changing an organisation’s compensation structure orbeing more selective in recruiting, they are asking for things that requireresources. (10)............Some new approaches are emerging that attempt to do just that, including the schemedevised by consultants Couze Jordan. The scheme, which covers communication, recruitment, and use of resources, predicts that significant improvements in these areas achieve an increase inshareholder value of up to 30 per cent.Another programme, launched by James Lester, an independent human resources expert, approaches the problem from a perspective that is designed to appeal to a wide range ofmanagers.(11)..............Both, he argues, involve appropriate decisions being made about theallocation of resources within a particular budget.Lester’s expertise enables him to carry out an organisational audit for his clients to identifywhich areas of HR are in most need of improvement. This is because there is no point in businessesspending large amounts without knowing if the investment is worthwhile. (12) ............. Lester’sadvice, however, is for companies to think twice before hiring people, since it is vital they assesswhether they are getting value for money.A But the findings are inconclusive because of the difficulty of collecting reliable evidence.B He argues that the role of a skilled, motivated and flexible workforce has become moresignificant as traditional sources ofcompetitive advantage diminish.C For example, a common mistake is to spend a fortune on recruitment to cover up fordeficiencies in training.D However, most leading experts in the field believe that there is sufficient evidence to supportthis model of workplace dynamics.E He compares the positive use of human resources to effective fund management, as this issomething that senior executives can relate to.F He believes, however, that the only way they will gain approval for these potentiallyexpensive initiatives is to have some data that demonstrates positive financial benefits.G In the light of this statement, it is odd that people management has taken so many years tomove up the agenda.参考答案及解析《Human resource management》,人力资源管理。

2019年初级商务英语阅读理解试题(6)In the last few years, managers throughout industry haveseen more changes than many of them could have expected tosee in their entire working lives having to communicateinformation which often leads to feelings of insecurity hasbecome a key activity. From being regarded as relativelyunimportant in many companies , management employeecommunication has become a central corporate need.Concordia International provides a good example of acompany that has adjusted well to the changing needs for communication . since 1995 ,Concordia has been turned inside-out and upside-down, to ensure that it is a marketing led,customer-responsive business, one that looks outwards at customers and competitors, ratherthan inwards at its own processes and the way things were done in the past. In the last eightyears, Concordia has reduced its workforce by more than 80.000 people - or 35% -on a voluntarybasis, with further downsizing anticipated. From being an engineering company, Concordia is now remaking itself as a service company. The role of employee communication in such a context is to build peoples self-confidence, topersuade them that, although it is inevitable that the changes will go ahead, they also bring withthem new opportunities for employees. However, this is not an easy task. People tend to beskeptical of theseclaims and to feel that they are losing touch with the company they haveworked for over many years. This is understandable, since many of the old certainties are beingswept away , including the core activities of the company they work for. Above all , they have hadto face up to the fact that they no longer have a job for life.Research indicates that people respond to this predicament in a variety of ways. The bulk ofemployees fall into two main categories in terms of their response to the new situation: on the onehand there are the pragmatists and on the other the highly anxious the former see their jobas a means to an end and have a relatively short-term perspective, with strong loyalty to their localterm , rather than the company as a whole . The second category, usually the majority, mayrespond to threatened changes with a feeling of having been let down, and even feel anger at thecompany for what they see as changing the terms of their employment. The employee communication process needs to be capable of accurately directing itsmessages at a variety of employee groups and departments within the workforce . this is whymiddle managers and line managers are so key to communication. They are the people who knowabout the full rage of concerns among the workforce. The problem in the past was that this crucialarea was often the responsibility of a separate, relatively isolated unit. Concordia putsresponsibilityfor communication firmly on line managers. All their research points to the same conclusion: peopleprefer to get their information face-to-face from their line managers. That is the key relationshipand where arguments and hearts and minds are lost. The general rule in company communication is to tell employees as much as you can as soonas you can. If you cant provide details, then at least put the news in context and commit yourselfto providing greater detail when it becomes available another rule of company communication isthat there must be a fit between what the company is telling its employees and what it is telling itsshareholders.15 In the last eight years, Concordia hasA made over 80.000 employees reduncdantB completed a period of downsizingC reduced its workforce of 80.000 by 35%D given 35% of departing employees voluntary redundancy16 From Concordias point of view, the role of communication is toA win employee support before going ahead with the changesB change the companys core activities.C emphasise the positive aspects of the changesD explain the need for the changes17 what does research show about most employees response tochange?A they expect it to have a bad effect on the companyB they feel completely powerlessC they become less loyalD they fell they have been treated unfairly18 Concordias communication process mainly relies onA printed communicationB departmental headsC personal communicationD a separate, specialized unit19 According to the writer, what is the guiding principle about giving information within anorganization?A Never make promises about future developmentsB Give people an overall view at the earliest possible stageC always include plenty of hard informationD Hold back until all the details can be provided20 which of the following would be the most suitable title for the article?A employee attitudes to company communicationB making company communication more effectiveC Researching company commmucationD Making employees feel less powerless参考答案及解析文章取材自一本管理手册,说的是一个组织里的有效沟通问题。
