LOVE AND MARRIAGE IN JANE AUSTEN’S WORK—PRIDE AND PREJUDICEA thesisSubmitted to the School of Foreign LanguageShenyang Normal UniversityIn Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree ofBachelor of ArtsBy Yang XiwenUnder the Supervision ofZhang LinApril 2009ABSTRACTJane Austen is one of the most remarkable women novelists in the world. As an authoress in the eighteenth century in England, she had a sensible idea on love and marriage. On her whole life, she wrote six novels: Northerner Abbey, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, and Persuasion, which describes various kinds of characters and their everyday life. Pride and Prejudice, one of the well-known novels in the history of the English literature, was published in 1813. The story talks about trivial matters of love, marriage and family life between country squires and fair ladies in Britain in the 18th century. Through the description of the daily talks and doings of young men and women, Austen pointed their characteristics. All of the characters had different experiences, and acted in different ways. However, they had a common pursuit, that‘s ‗good marriage‘. This paper is to make an analysis of four marriages in Pride and Prejudice and discuss the deep outlook for their marriage in the light of social background at the time. In describing the characters‘everyday life and one marriage after another, Austen expressed her sensible view on it clearly. In her opinion, money was essential to a marriage while the equality in social status would increase the possibility of the marriage, but what affected the marriage most were manners. According to her, it was the good manners that united the heroes and heroines. Compared with the social scene on marriage nowadays, maybe her view was so restricted. But during her time, her view was so advanced that it was not accepted widely. On summary, we can find the author‘s ideaabout marriage from the analysis: marriage, property and social status interconnected, but not absolutely.

傲慢与偏见婚姻观main meaning: Marriage is the central topic in Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Emma: the plots of the novels and the actions of the characters revolve around marriage. For Austen's characters, marriage does not mean the act of ungoverned passion but a complex engagement between the marrying couple and society. Austen's characters are completely integrated into society and play out the stories within the social rules. Based on Socialist-feminism, this thesis examines social background in Austen's time and explores how social conditions influence females' psychological struggle and anxiety toward marriage. For Socialist-feminists, material factors shape women's marital consciousness in determinate ways. The discussions of male class and female status in the end of the eighteenth century are helpful for understanding why marriage is the central topic in Austen's novels. In a sense, marriage is regarded as a market place to exchange upward class mobility and financial support for Austen's characters. In order to achieve the goal of marriage, females are good at transforming themselves into commodities by displaying their appearances and accomplishments to appeal to male gazers. They realize that marriage can provide opportunities of class mobility and financial support; money and class are thus closely connected in their decision of marital partners. keywords: Plot overview ;.Analysis of the major character ;Themes ;Motifs ;Pride and Prejudice ;marriage The feeling of 《Pride And Prejudice》Then mantreat great event in one's life with punishing, Demonstrate different attitudes to the love question of the marriage of young girl of the family origin of middle class of villages and towns, Thus reflected authors oneself's marriage view: It is wrong to get married for the property, money and position; Get married and does not consider that above-mentioned factors are unwise too . So, she objects to getting married for money , objecting to regarding the marriage as a trifling matter . She emphasizes the importance of the ideal marriage , and regard men and women's emotion as the foundation stone which concludes the ideal marriage . The woman protagonist in the book Elizabeth comes from the little landlord's family, reaches the west to have deep love for for the rich and powerful people sons and younger brothers. Reach the disparity of ignoring family status and wealth of the west, propose to her, but is refused. Elizabeth's misunderstanding and prejudice to him are a reason, but a main one is the arrogance that she dislikes him. Reach the thes of the west in fact status' the reflections of difference, exist this kind arrogant, Not having common thoughts and feelings between he and Elizabeth, the marriage that can not have lofty ideals . Elizabeth watches conducting oneself in society and a series of behavior of reaching the west personally afterwards, See he change the proud conceited expressions of passing by, dispel misunderstanding and prejudice to him, Thus concluded the happy marriage with him. Many people simplyregard Pride and Prejudice as a love story, but in my opinion, this book is an illustration of the society at that time. She perfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at her time and gave the people in her works vivid characters. The characters have their own personalities. Mrs. Bennet is a woman who makes great efforts to marry off her daughters. Mr. Bingley is a friendly young man, but his friend, Mr. Darcy, is a very proud man who seems to always feel superior. Even the five daughters in Bennet family are very different. Jane is simple, innocent and never speaks evil of others. Elizabeth is a clever girl who always has her own opinion. Mary likes reading classic books. (Actually she is a pedant.) Kitty doesn’t have her own opinion but likes to follow her sister, Lydia. Lydia is a girl who follows exotic things, handsome man, and is somehow a little profligate. When I read the book, I can always find the same personalities in the society now. That is why I think this book is indeed the representative of the society in Britain in the 18th century. Then man treat great event in one's life with punishing, Demonstrate different attitudes to the love question of the marriage of young girl of the family origin of middle class of villages and towns, Thus reflected authors oneself's marriage view: It is wrong to get married for the property, money and position; Get married and does not consider that above-mentioned factors are unwise too . The woman protagonist in the book Elizabeth comes from the little landlord's family, reaches the west tohave deep love for for the rich and powerful people sons and younger brothers. Reach the disparity of ignoring family status and wealth of the west, propose to her, but is refused. Elizabeth's misunderstanding and prejudice to him are a reason, but a main one is the arrogance that she dislikes him. Reach the thes of the west in fact status' the reflections of difference, exist this kind arrogant, Not having common thoughts and feelings between he and Elizabeth, the marriage that can not have lofty ideals The family of gentleman in the countryside is Jane Austen’s favourite topic. But this little topic can reflect big problems. It concludes the stratum situation and economic relationships in Britain in her century. You can find these from the very beginning of this book. Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the best classic book, according to a poll of Times readers. One in ten ranked the novel, published in 1813, as their favourite work to have been written more than 100 years ago. Jane Austen was born at Steventon on December 16, 1775, the youngest of seven children. She received her education—scanty enough, by modern standards—at home. She has a gift of telling a story in a way that has never been surpassed. She rules her places, times, characters, and marshals them with unerring precision. Her machinery is simple but complete; events group themselves so vividly and naturally in her mind that, in describing imaginary scenes, we seem not only to read them but to live them, to see the people coming and going—the gentlemen courteous and in top-boots,the ladies demure and piquant; we can almost hear them talking to one another. No retrospects; no abrupt flights, as in real life. In this paper, the characteristics of language using and writing styles in Pride and Prejudice were presented. People always think that Austen was an expert at telling love stories. In fact, the marriage in her book is not the result of love, but the result of economi c needs. After reading this book, I know the truth is that a poor woman must be in need of a husband, a wealthy man. I couldn’t forget how eager Mrs. Bennet wants to marry off her daughters. If you want to know why she is so crazy about these things, I must mention the situation in Britain at that time. Only the eldest son had the privilege of inheriting his father’s possessions. Younger sons and daughters who are used to luxurious lives have no choice but marry a man or woman in possession of a large fortune to continue their comfortable lives. Thus, we can see that getting married is a way to become wealthier, particularly for women without many possessions. Jane Austen told us that money and possession determined everything, including marriage and love in her century. In modern society, although the marriages of economic needs have decreased rapidly, the concept of “money determines everything” is still rooted in some people’s mind. A lot of parents try hard to interfere their children’s marriages. Education background, possessions, jobs remains the main reason that may influence one’s marriage. Marry for money is still a big problem in oursociety. We can’t help thinking: can money determine everything? Austen left this problem for us to think. The genius of Jane Austen lies in this perfect simplicity, the simplicity that reflects big problems. Although Austen was only 21 when she wrote “Pride and Prejudice”, her sharp observation of social lives makes the style of this book surprisingly mature and lively. The plots in her works are always very natural. The development of the plot is as inevitable as a problem in mathematics. I think the depth of Pride and Prejudice is the reason that makes this book prominent and classic. Today, her book still can be the guide telling us the econo mic relationships both at her time and in modern time. In “pride and prejudice”, there is no twist polt as well heartquaking scene, reverse, as if the author only write it casually. But her lofty narrate technique is attracting many readers and essayists. The graceful dialog in the book plays an important role in the depiction of the characters.[参考资料] REFERENCE [1] Butler, Marilyn, Jane Austen and the War of Ideas, (Oxford: Clarendon ), 1975:216 [2] Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, eds. However, I canrealize different views of marriage among the young people inthe book of Pride and Prejudice and by the way of reading it,I have deeper thought about marriage.key words: marriage social status wealth family background1.IntroductionPride and Prejudice, taking the daily life for the material, reflects the real English countryside life and ways of the world in the condition of conservation and obstruction. By using the technique of writing of satire and humor, the work tells different kinds of personalities and life attitudes. The writer shows different views of marriage in the book. For them, marriage is sometimes equal to a business in which people can get what they are eager for except love. It seems that marriage cannot bring true love but materials. This book arouses my curiosity and lets us wonder which form of marriage can make happiness and suit ourselves. Both in the west and in China, Pride and Prejudice has got great attention from the critics and many critics have commented it from sociohistorical aspect. Although some scholars analyzed Austen’s views on marriage, the marriage should aim to make a deep analysis in order that we can completely understand the original views on marriage and add something new into the literary criticism of the great work of Jane Austen. The young people have distinct attitudes towards marriage and choose their loved ones differently. People marry for different purposes, some for wealth, some for appearance, some for desire and some only for love. Exactly their attitudes towards a man to marry reflect their view of life. Throughwhat kind of marriage they choose, we can judge the personalities on the people. There are four couples getting married leaving me a great expression in this book but neither of them have same opinion for marriage. From their choice, we can easily see marriage means what for them. Love without romantics loses its own beautiful color as well.2.Historical BackgroundThe story happened at the end of 18th century and the start of 19th century and was called First Impression at beginning. At that time, the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century made women’s liberation possible, which provided a good condition for Jane Austen to create the book. There is no possibility for female to fight for their freedom and equality before and this was a rare chance for them to voice in the public.Besides, Economic Independence heightening made people start to care about humanity rather than the problem of food and clothing. More and more women have the right to accept education and realized that there is many unequal phenomenon in the society. The educated female began to turn to the liberation of women.Traditional beliefs of social and family roles of men and women began to change. As more female were educated and able to work outside, the roles of husband and wife may change. Female gradually became independent and could earn money as male, which made them proud and at same time, they wonder why female should accept unequal treatment now that they were as excellent as male. The pioneering women novelists such as Jane Austen broke out to a private world and entered into a public world. Female began to appear in the public and work on social contact just like male do. This made female more independent and realized that there is no need for female to attach to their husband. They can make a good living without the help of rich men and do the work by themselves. Therefore, more and more female came out to voice for their rights of freedom, equality and liberation. The appearance of Pride and Prejudice is exactly suitable for the society then and got a real hit when it was published. It really attracted people’s eyes and arouse them to rethink about humanity.3.1T he marriage of Jane and BingleyJane, the eldest daughter of , is beautiful, good-natured and elegant, which seems to be a great attraction for Bingley. Meanwhile, Bingley is in possession of a great fortune as well as handsome appearance and modest attitude. The combination of the two young people seems to be braw. However, their love is pure as we think? The answer is not of course. Although they fall in love with each other and get together, their marriage is set up on the appearance. There is no doubt that Jane is charming by her posture and behaviors, which draws the eyes of . After all, Jane lives in a family of developing a lady and her mother requires her to behave properly. His nice temperament sends forth from her body. Darcy, as a gentleman, has grown up in a wealthy family and become a young spark. Both of them possess so many common virtues: They are good-tempered and modest. Besides, their love both depends on appearance in some way. As long as they get older and the appearance changes a lot, the love can be everlasting? Everyone has a get-older day and when the day comes, the couple might be tired to each other and marriage may fall apart. They both have some weakness: Jane lacks strength and self-confidence and Bingley does not have his strong and determined disposition at all. It seems that the two youngers are similar to each other themselves. But it is lucky that Jane and Bingley can always receive considerate and beneficial advice from Elizabeth and Darcy. Thanks to Elizabeth’s kindness, Jane can pull through difficulties when Bingley left.Fortunately Bingley eventually came back and met with Jane, they two were together again.Nowadays our society has a phenomenon that young people are likely to choose those who look nice for their partners, which can be called “see the face of social”. There is no doubt that good look can feast others’ eyes. However, the true heart makes relationship stronger and deeper no matter how time flies. Just like a saying goes“A long journey proves the stamina of a horse and the passage of time tells the true from the false”! One’s heart can not be changed easily while their appearance changes in a short time as long as time goes. Therefore, you are supposed to judge whether your personality is suitable to the other if you need to have a partner in your life. Don’t care about their appearance because the heart will not change. Interesting souls meet with each other when their love comes and beautiful looks end up when timeflies. Like an old Chinese saying goes “appearance is easy to old while heart is hard to change”.The combination of Jane and Bingley is just like an enjoyable appreciation on their faces and falling love at first sight. We can’t say that this marriage is not timeless but this “love”based on appearance is terrifying. The result between Jane and Bingley remains a mystery to the reader and makes us wonder. Whether this marriage is suitable for young people at present in this society? Whether their marriage results from impulsion and sightless worship? Whether they would accompany a lifetime? Can the love based on appearance be long? This is a question deserved to be considered in current society.3.2T he marriage of Lydia and WickhamLydia is a rude girl with full of impulsion and passion. To be honest, she is frivolous to things and eager for social contact when she is a little girl of young age. She is likely to have contact with military officers in Meriton and proud of it. It is said that she is easily to be together with anyone if she is tantalized. Therefore her love to Wickham is just like a business of flesh and sexual passion. Her love comes with hotness like a windstorm. When she firstly meets with Wickham, she is attracted by his handsome appearance. However, Wickham is a man without good morality and he is so lexual and mean. This kind of man can be said “Satyr prodigal”and “speciosity”.Wickham has wanted to get together with and finally he failed. Therefore he turns to Lydia, the babyish and foolish girl. Their elopement is reallya shame for the family of . Luckily they get the help of and can liveby their own due to his kindness of a great fortune. The combination of Lydia and Wickham is just a marriage with lust and out of exploration to heterosexual feeling. Their elopement can be regarded as an immature behavior and it is amusing for all of us in their marriage. Their marriage is set up without any based on love, which can be said unpractical. The same point between the couple is that both of them like to squander without any control. Never considering the life of future, the postnuptial marriage is bound to be tough. Wickham gets what he wants—wealth under the help of Darcy and Lydia gets what she wants as well—satisfaction of erotic feeling from Wickham. The marriage is “best” for both of them. There are many other couples like them. The couples are just like kids themselves and they are not able to bring up a baby by themselves. It isa behavior without any responsibility and obligation. You can see manypeople get married at a young age and soon they divorce unfortunately, which makes the old generation feel curious and shocked. I wonder why it happens commonly. As a matter of fact, the young people are so young that they can not afford to set up a sense of responsibility to others, such as their parents, loved ones, workmates and strangers. Grown up in a white-headed family, the young generation tends to be self-centered and selfish, which is no benefit for them to live in a society of helping each other when they are adults. When you are likely to marry to someone, please consider what duties you shall have to do and what can you give to the other and don not ask for getting all the time. This is important in a marriage to balance. (Li Dapeng, 2015: 2)3.3T he marriage of Charlotte and CollinsCharlotte is a mundane woman without wealth or charming appearance. However she is full of “wisdom” and she thinks the marriage is happy or not depends on an opportunity you seize. Out of realistic consideration, she regards the marriage as a deal. When she meets with Collins at first, she does not like him at all. Charlotte praises that Collins is handsome and wise while she knows he is foolish in her eyes. Collins will come into a fortune of and he is a wealthy man soon, which makes Charlotte want to marry him.As a matter of fact, family background and social class are matched for marriage nowadays. Someone is forced to marry to a rich man but she does not love him at all. Some couples are broken up due to one’s being as poor as a church mouse. Can this kind of marriage make couples happy? I’m afraid not.For some poor girls, they are used to making a short and uptight living and eager to escape from present situation. Therefore, happiness means having a great deal of money and they would like to marry a rich man rather than a loved one instead. In the words of people now, “bread” and “love” are difficult to choose. In this society with full of materials and people are more likely to pay attention to exterior conditions. They are not certain whether they would get happiness or comfortability in the marriage but thisis the only chance for them to get away from poverty, which arouses others’sympathy and resonance. We can not easily say the girls’ choices are true or false, we can not accuse them of being greedy and vain. Because there is no qualification for us to judge others’behaviors and life if we have not experienced what they had experienced.Charlotte can get a sense of safety by getting the source of the economic and this sense is from Collins. Therefore, no matter how foolish and smarmy he is, she still thinks marriage is home to return. At the same time, Collins can get a warm family from her. The combination between the two is a best way for them.3.4T he marriage of Elizabeth and DarcyElizabeth and seemed to have some contradiction. Darcy was a young man with pride due to his glorious family background. With different growing environment, Elizabeth had prejudice to Darcy and said words with cold if necessary. However, exactly her extraordinariness, Darcy treated her with different eyes and gradually loved this girl. A Netherfield ball began. Elizabeth and Darcy talked about Wickham and she blamed that Wickham lost friendship of him. The two became embarrassed.Later, Bingley left the town and Jane was inconsolable. Elizabeth thought that was all Darcy’s false because of his instigation. At the same time, Darcy unburdened himself to Elizabeth and was refused by her.Luckily with the perseverance of Darcy and misunderstanding being untied, Elizabeth was moved by his courage and kindness to others. Therefore she loved the man deeply just like the man liked her.The love between Elizabeth and Darcy is so romantic and moving for all of readers, which is exactly our desire for love and marriage. The marriage of them seems to be unpractical but in fact is suitable for their personality. Elizabeth has a deep realization of marriage and love and therefore she refuses the proposal of Collins because she knows there is no affection base between her and Collins. Her view of marriage is based on love, only love. There is no need to treat marriage as a business in our lives and the view of Elizabeth is right for love choosing. All the things Elizabeth gets is deserved due to her pureness. Although she is not trapped in her mother’s desire of marrying a rich man, eventually she marries to a rich man who loves her deeply as well, which moved me a lot.Luckily Elizabeth finds a true love and gets a soulmate forever and in her marriage there is pure love!4.Views of the AuthorJane Austen is a progressive female writer and her original views on marriage expressed in her masterpiece Pride and Prejudice obviously have progressiveness. She saw that women had to obey men and depended on them to gain comfortable living conditions, which made her think it is unequal at all. In this sense, marriage was merely a decent way of survival for women. Women had few expectations of emotional feelings in theirmarriages. However she had a strong belief that marriage determined by economic and social status can not bring real happiness for women and only love can awake women’s life and happiness. In her work, she inspired female to pursue their love and keep energetic to marriage and do not give in to unequal family background just like Elizabeth who definitely got her love without any doubt and Elizabeth achieved her dream of marrying a man she really loved, which was exactly Jane Austen’s dream as well.5.ConclusionThere is a realistic problem in the novel what is different family background. No matter how time goes, people are more likely to match marriage with identification, social class, wealth or other corporeal things. In their eyes, they regard marriage as a business and are used to matching the marriage to other materials. As a matter of fact, marriage should be the loved ones get together forever in spite of other factors. No matter how rich, handsome, charming the other is, you shall stick to your own loved one in your heart and never give in to other people or society. In the novel, Elizabeth is so extraordinary due to her ignorance of Darcy’s wealth. She was not truckling like other girls who wanted to marry Darcy in order to get a great of possession. Exactly her pureness, love seemed to be gracious in her eyes, which attracted Darcy a lot.The true love is like this! No matter how poor you are, I’m with you just because I love you. However you shall pocket your pride and prejudice and treat me honestly. Just like a Chinese saying “Hold hands to me and grow old with you”. We are supposed to have the sweetest and best wishes to love. We shall meet with a great number of obstacles in the pursuit of love butkeeping an positive and persistent attitude. Stick to love and have a strong belief that true love will approach to you in the near future.6. Works sited:[1] Graff, Gerald. 英语论文-范本《傲慢与偏见》中的婚姻态度(英文)The Attitude of Marriage in Pride and Prejudice: What Has Affected the Choice of Marriage?《傲慢与偏见》中的婚姻态度什么影响了婚姻选择?1“This is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”(Jane Austen, 2021:1) This sentence was stem from the English woman novelist Jane Austen, which was the typical of her masterpiece .Thus it brings out a classic story concerning love and marriage, which took place in England at the beginning of the 19th century.Marriage is a topic that never ends; it has gone through for a long time. However, it is still stared by the public without hesitation. The marriage and human being are closely related, but few people can place themselvesoutside .However, person is different from each other. It is for this reason, everyone has a different marriage. Many anthropologists and sociologists keep on research in this field. Many writers also describe the marriage in their own works. Pride and Prejudice, this famous novel, also presents it to us the different marriages, leaving us to think about the marriage.I. The Summary of Pride and PrejudicePride and Prejudice can be divided into three parts; the main story is unfolded by the Bennet’s family. Mr. Bennet is an England gentleman, he was living in the country, and at the same time he does not have not much of property and 2000 income of the pounds annually. In the meantime, he had fivedaughters, Jane, Elizabeth, kitty, Mary, Lydia. When Mrs. Bennet comes to realize that it is impossible to have a son and all their property will be inherited by a nephew, so it becomes Mr. Bennet biggest worry to find a husband with great property and social status .“However little know the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughter.”(Jane Austen, 2021:1) Thus, when Mrs. Bennet hears about that Netherfield in the neighborhood will move into a rich bachelor she will be very happy. What makes her exciting is that the gentleman still brings to his friend who is richer than himself. On the dancing party, a beautiful girl Jane who has a long hair, beautiful figure shows her dignity and wins the heart of Mr. Bingley. Mrs. Bennet is bloated and is laughed by Mr. Bingley. While Mr. Darcy is arrogant, in his opinion that on the whole party, expect for the Bingley Sister, dance with other woman all is to suffer mental agony .This lets everyone dislike him very much. Accidentally, Elizabeth hears about Darcy's discussion a bout her. “She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me; and I am in no humor at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men.” (Jane Austen, 2021:12) So she decides to leave Darcy alone.Jane goes and has a chance to visit to Bingley's family, but she is sick because of the raining in the half way, it is impossible to go home. Because of the deep sensibility between sister, Elizabeth visits to her on foot. Jane will be not willing to let her go, Elizabeth settles down. Jane recovers slowly, but Mrs. Bennet is very happy in that the two sisters have more chance to touch with the two rich gentlemen. Bingly loses his heart to Jane with time goes by, but the mistake between Darcy and Elizabeth is difficult to remove. However, Darcy has attacked by the alive and clever Elizabeth. When handsome military officer Wickham shows up, everyone is attacked by him,2Elizabeth has not exception. He tells Elizabeth that his father is the secretary of Darcy's father. Aft er Darcy’s father death, Darcy does notfollow the testament to look after Wickham. Because of the mistake between Elizabeth and Darcy, Elizabeth believes in Wickham's words without hesitation. At this time, Collins who is the Bennet family's prospector inheritor shows up in their daily life. With the help of the Darcy’s aunt, he gets a profession as a priest and satisfied with his situation. For this reason, he decides to marry a lady to compensate the losses the sisters have suffered for his inherit of their property. At first, he in favor of Jane, after taking the hind from Mrs. Bennet, he makes a proposal of marriage to Elizabeth, but he is refused. At last, he makes a proposal to Elizabeth’s friend Charlotte successfully. At the beginning of winter and his friends leave without saying goodbye, this makes Mrs. Bennet and Jane disappoints. Jane receives a letter from Miss. Bingley; which says in the letter that Darcy's sister and Mr. Bingley find each other are suitable. Jane is unhappy. But Elizabeth thinks that there must be some other reasons. Mrs. Bennet's brother Mr. Gardenia takes Jane to London to stretch her leg, but Jane all the time has no chance to see her beloved. Elizabeth is invested by her good friend to have a visit to her new house. Suddenly, Darcy makes a proposal of marriage to Elizabeth; his pose is still very arrogant so as to refuse by Elizabeth. Because she can not forgiveDarcy's arrogant to Wickham, because his prejudice breaks up Jane and Bingley. Darcy leaves in despair. In the summer, Gardenias and Elizabeth have a visit together, when they hear about Darcy is out of the house, by the way, their go to his park, while they meet with the Darcy who comes back in advance. Elizabeth finds that Darcy has changed. He is not pride anymore and does not look down on his family with low social status. What is most important, Darcy looks love her as usual. But this time, the smallest daughter Lydia elopes with Wickham. This is the shame of the family. Elizabeth goes back to do some help in hurry. In the end, Wickham gets a great deal of money and gets married with Lydia formally. The shame affair is covered .But Elizabeth does not count on Darcy to love her. From the Lydia, Elizabeth knows that it is Darcy who had been borrowed them money and in present the wedding. This makes Elizabeth to feel surprises in that she has already realized the truth between Darcy and Wickham. She begins to envisage her inter heart; she comes to realize that she still love Darcy deeply. Bingley and Darcy go back to the Netherfield Park. Bingley makes a proposal to Jane, who makes Darcy and Elizabeth go together. However, Darcy’s aunt does not agree with their love, while Elizabeth faces it bravely. This makes Darcy to realize that Elizabeth still love him.At the end,Elizabeth and Darcy, as well as Jane and Bingley live happily,While Mrs. Bennet is well to proud to marry three daughters.II. The Background of Pride and PrejudiceA. The Author of This NovelFrom my standpoint, a good grasp of the career of the author was a must to fully understanding a work. Jane Austin (1775-1817), the author of the novel Pride and Prejudice, was born in Steventon of Hampshire, where her father wasa rector. She was the second daughter and seventh child in a family. Herfather and brothers once educated in Oxford. As a result, her family took possession of a big collection of books. She was well tutored at home underthe guidance of her brothers when she was very young. As3Jane Austin put it in Pride and Prejudice: \all the masters that were necessary.\Austen, 2021: 205) In addition to study, she could be seen in a variety of social intercourse. She kept observing and thinking in a world composed of familial and bourgeoisie background. Not only was she acclimatedto such style of life, she was also familiar with and fond of it as well. She considered it to be complete, animated and with the beauty of poem. Thereputed Charlotte Bront once remarked: “I would not li ke to stay in her small house with gentlemen and gentlewomen of her.”①(刘洪涛,2021:169) This seemed to have become a typical criticism. Jane Austin was not as narrow as that, in fact, she did enjoy the bourgeoisie life and never regarded it to be narrow. Conversely, she was longing to draw a picture of it literally and toair the feeling and understanding of her own, as a result of which sheachieved the masterpiece that Maugham considered to be perfect. Jane Austin's work was primarily concerned with the marriages and romance between man and woman, but the author herself who arranged marriages for the protagonists in novels never got married. Perhaps it was writing that she was enamored of. She started to write when she was young. She made the best of her time atbreakfast in writing from Miss. Sun and Love and Friendliness and gradually finished the first scripts and repeatedly revised. Sense and sensibility was finished in 1795, pride and prejudice in 1796 and Northanger Abbey in 1798.She was obscure at that and failed to find any press to publish her novels. In1809, Jane Austin’s family moved to Bath where she completed Mansfield Parkin 1812, Emma in 1814 and Persuasion in 1816. The works sense and sensibility and pride and prejudice during the early stage of writing came to be brought out since 1811 and Emma published in 1816 received a wide range of praise. Jane Austin became a famous writer afterwards. Much to our sorrow, when she had the opportunity to begin life anew, her health began deteriorating and died in July eight, 1817. Mansfield Park and Persuasion were published in the second year of her death. If Jane Austin lived a little longer, the reputation of her novels brought her could encourage her to produce more sterling works. In her times, with the advent of French Revolution and Industrialization, the development of capitalism hit a new hit. Conversely, she did not depict the great changes taking place in her times, but rather percepted and felt from the internal part of the bourgeoisie life, and on her close examination of the marriages, she tried to build ethic ties of honesty and harmony inside the changing class. Pride and prejudice is such kind of novel that is still popular nowadays. The literary criticism William Somerset Maugham even ranks it top ten of the most popular novels in the world. The Social BackgroundNot only do we need to be well informed of a writer, more importantly, we should know the social background. Novels stem from life and go above life. To learn the social background can help us to understand better the genuine reason purposes of writers. Human entered into the period of paternity since Zeus created the huge scale of kinship. Through orthodox, order and various restrictions, paternal culture reduced women to inferior creature. Women's status was very low even in 18th and 19th centuries. Men snatched the control of economy, politics and ideology and they considered women as inferior animals and repulsed them overtly. ①(杨莉馨,从《傲慢与偏见》的结构谈简・奥斯丁的女性意识) The society with Jane Austin lived in witnessed a climax of the development4of capitalism, but the feudalism was still powerful, equality between men and women was still out of reach, especially in the distribution of inheritance, men enjoyed priority. The order of the division of the property went this: from male (a lineal consanguinity) to male (a collateralconsanguinity), and than to the female. ①(陈棠,理性的光芒---傲慢与偏见与简奥斯丁的婚姻道德观) So the ownership of the female property would see it destiny in the end. The novel Pride and Prejudice also mentioned: if one family did not have a male inheritor, their property would be only inherited by another male in the family; the only possibility for the female was to depend on this male inheritor. If the inheritor did not take them seriously, they would only wonder around the street. For this reason, finding a shelter for themselves without worrying about foot and clothes was of importance. It was in this type of social environment that brought up the truth that we have mentioned at the beginning of the passage. It was just for this piece of truth that provided the women hope and the object they were fighting for. At the same time, author advantaged of the marriage provided for the woman was that it could improve their economic and social status. After understanding the social background at time , definite the priority the female had in the property inherited and realized that the only way for the female as a social garniture was to get married , then it was easy to understand that Mrs. Bennet strongly desired to marry her daughters and the purpose of Elizabeth’s friend’s marriage as well as Mr. Darcy’s behavior to break up the affection between Mrs. Bennet and Mr. Bennet and Darcy’s aunt’s behavior t o opposite the affection between Darcy and Elizabeth. All of those became reasonable and logical.III. The Five Marriages in This NovelWhen knows the author and the society background, let’s look at the marriage in this novel. In Pride and Prejudice, there are five marriages. They are Bennets’ marriage, marriage of Jane and Bingley, marriage of Elizabeth and Darcy, marriage of Lydia and Wickham, marriage of Charlotte and Collins. We often say: “All happy families resemble one another; each unhappy family is its own way.” (托尔斯泰 2021:1) The persons are differences too. So every marriage has its own feature. When we begin to analyze these marriages, we can find out that the present social environment is not only factor that influences the marriages. As it is known to us, for the children, the family environment is more important than social environment. It maybe influences many aspects of children. But the main factor is the parents. Because parents are the first teachers for children, every word and behavior maybe affectstheir children. In this novel, we should analyze the Bennets’ marriage before we see other marriages.A. Bennet’s MarriageThere do not have the intuitional depiction about Bennet’s marriage. But what do children see and the dialogues between Bennets show us the unhappy marriage. Everyone knows that the foundation of the marriage is to understand each other. However Mr. Bennet is so odd a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humor, reserve, and caprice, that the experience of the three and twenty years has been insufficient to make his wife understand his character. The husband and wife should have the equal levels which is another basic condition of the marriage. In this novel, Mrs. Bennet is a woman of mean5感谢您的阅读,祝您生活愉快。
