(8月)LONDON (Reuters) — Quiet please —Britain’ s Queen Elizabeth is preparing to have her swans counted.Buckingham Palace has announced that the annual Swan Upping, a tradition dating back to the 12th century which involves a census of the swan population on the River Thames, will be conducted by the Queen’ s official Swan Marker from July 20 24.“With the assistance of the Queen’ s Swan Warden, Professor Christopher Perrins of the University of Oxford, the swans and young cygnets (小天鹅) are also assessed for any signs of injury or disease,” Buckingham Palace said in announcing the count. The process involves the Swan Marker, David Barber, rowing up the Thames for five days with the Swan Warden in traditional skiffs while wearing special scarlet uniforms and counting, weighing and measuring swans and cygnets. It may seem eccentric, but it is very important to the Queen, According to custom, Britain’ s sovereign owns all unmarked, mute swans in open water, but the Queen now exercises the right only on stretches of the Thames and its nearby tributaries. In medieval times, the Swan Marker would not only travel up the river counting the swans, but would catch as many as possible as they were sought after for banquets and feasts. This year, the Swan Marker and the Swan Warden are particularly keen to discover how much damage is being caused to swans and cygnets by attacks from dogs and from discarded fishing tackle (渔具).It is also an important year because Queen Elizabeth has decided to join her team of Swan Uppers for part of the census. She will follow them up the river and visit a local school project on the whole subject of swans, cygnets and the Thames.“Education and conservation ar e essential to the role of Swan Upping and the involvement of school children is always a rewarding experience,” Buckingham Palace said.[语篇解读] 泰晤士河上每年都要举行一个重要的活动:数天鹅。

Love at first sight can be triggered by a certain glance, a casual touch, or a physical attribute. Although it may seem magical, it is actually a powerful cocktail of neurotransmitters that produces a sense of euphoria known as limerence. The person of interest bees the focus of our attention, and we fixate our thoughts on them from 85 to 100 percent of the time. Both men and women experience signs of love at first sight, such as trembling, feeling flushed, stammering, or fearing emotional control. Men’s faces bee flushed, their heartbeat increases, pupils dilate, and muscles stiffen. Females experience tingling palms, shallow breathing, and dilated pupils. Phenylethylamine (PEA) is the primary neurotransmitter responsible for producing the feeling of euphoria in love. PEA, together with four other neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine, noradrenaline, and serotonin, cause lovers to feel giddy, absentminded, optimistic, gregarious, and full of high energy.High levels of PEA ensure people bond long enough until more stable emotional attachments can form. However, PEA is no longer necessary after stronger emotional bonds are formed and gradually dissipates. Elevated PEA levels usually last for two to three years, and as it fades, the brain increases the production of endorphins, which create feelings of serenity, security, and tranquility. The increased endorphin level helps in transitioning from lust to bonded love, a vulnerable time for lovers.Understanding how these love chemicals work in the brain is crucial to developing a longterm relationship. Relationships are at their weakest point during the transition period from limerence to bonded love, which might explain why marriages tend to break up during the early stage. Successful couples who make the transition from limerence to love experience fewer divorces. Knowing this, couples can take steps to nurture and grow their emotional bond over time, leading to a deeper and more fulfilling connection.【重点词汇】1. attribute [əˈtrɪbjə(ː)t] v. 转变,过渡;transitions;transitions;transitioning;transitioned;transitioned16. vulnerable [ˈvʌlnərəb(ə)l] adj. Why Im HereMy mom has a 1)magnetic force around her. Rootless things fly through the air toward her and land at her feet. Five husbands did, one right after the other. She was 15 years old when Number One appeared. There's only one photo of her from back then. She's got one foot up on the 2)running board of an old 3)pickup truck. She's got a hand up like she's trying to shield her eyes. She looks like she's seeing something off in the distance, something that's better than anything within reach.

The day she met Arnie, Number One, was one of those days when you swear you can reach out and grab a handful of air, all hot and thick and going nowhere. Arnie's car broke down on the road that ran alongside the 4)trailer park, just as Ma and her mom were coming back from the store, each carrying a bag of groceries. Arnie stood frowning into his engine, looked up as the women passed and asked the distance to the nearest gas station or garage. According to Ma, he got as far as “Hey ladies, can you tell me how far it is?” and Ma, full of too much humidity and boredom, shot back, “Too far for those 5)fancy shoes to carry you.”

In modern times, many teenagers have idols (偶像) of their own who are always some stars on TV on the Internet, etc. These stars always think that a slimmer figure may be perfect for themselves. However, does size really matter? Are teenage fans trying hard to become like their idols? Do famous stars really have the power to influence people especially teenagers? For the longest time, many parents blame (责备) teen idols for influencing the way their kids act. Have you noticed how teens idolize the stars these days? Even, their personal affairs are being followed by kids these days. Take for example the case of Lindsay Lohan or Mary Kate Ashley, They are famous teen stars. However, since they are trying to project an image to satisfy a lot of people in show business, their health and body suffer. Many kids realized this problem. But they are easily influenced by these stars to exercise and eat less.It is a fact that the media and especially famous teen stars can influence people powerfully. But teenagers are easily influenced because teenage years are the period when our personality and identity developments take place. Teens watching TV shows and reading magazines are easily pulled into the dieting and harmful eating habits because the media have some ways to pull these acts. They use thin models and stars to endorse (宣传) products or to star in an up-and-coming shows or movies. With strong competition, stars are forced to eat less and do extreme exercise routines to get the roles or offers that come their way.Living in today’s time and generation is a bit disturbing to a lot of parents. Media, especially as well as the stars, have a very powerful influence to drive teenagers to good or bad. It’s good that we can control ourselves to avoid bad things from happening. If not, parents should really realize and guide their teens to decide what’s in and what’s out.1.According to the passage, we can learn that Lindsay Lohan _________.A.likes to help kidsB.lives an unhealthy lifestyleC.doesn’t get any exerciseD.sets a good example for teenagers2.Many stars have to be on diet _________.A.to keep healthy to face competitionB.to keep a slim sizeC.to survive under pressureD.to satisfy their teenage fans3.In the author’s view, why are teenagers easily influenced by some TV shows?A.They are in their development period.B.They are tired of school.C.Their idols often appear in many TV shows.D.They have nothing to do in their spare time. When I’m in Italy, I generally only eat Italian food. I doubt whether there’s another country in Europe that has food that can keep me coming back for more.To eat well in Italy, finding the right restaurant is important. I like restaurants, run by people willing to share their love of good cooking, and places serving family recipes (食谱). Signs of a good restaurant include a low-rent location, lots of locals, and a small, handwritten menu in one language. The menu is small because they’re only selling everything they’re cooking; it’s handwritten because it’s shaped by what is fresh today in the market; and it’s in one language because they mostly serve locals. For a fast and cheap lunch, I look for Italian food in corner delis (熟食店). Another choice is to drop by a neighborhood grocery store to pick up some cold cuts, cheeses, and other foods for a picnic.Italians tend to spend a long time on each course, and dinner is the evening’s entertainment. For example, when you have a full-blown Italian dinner in a restaurant, you don’t get out until midnight; a three-hour meal is common. Waiters often provide lots of drinks that seem designed to keep you from leaving. When you want the bill, you’ll have to ask for it. To “eat and run” is seen as a lost opportunity.A couple of years ago, I sat down at my favorite place in Verona, Enoteca Can Grande, with my friend and guide Franklin. We let the chef, Giuliano bring us whatever he wanted. Just after the antipasti (开胃食物) arrived, Franklin’s wife phoned him and said. “Don’t eat too much cheese or dessert.” Later Franklin, who was not thin, surveyed our table. Sighing, he said, “The foods are so plentiful but I can eat few.” “That’s a pity,” I said. I enjoyed the food for three hoursand he watched me eating for three hours. Eating in Verona was really an amazing experience. 4.What does the author want to show in Paragraph 1?A.He likes Italian food a lot.B.He has doubt about Italian food.C.There is limited food choices in Italy.D.He doesn’t want to come back to Italy.5.In the author’s opinion, a good restaurant in Italy is a place ________.A.which serves family recipesB.which provides various foodC.where the owner likes a small menuD.where Italian is not the only language6.What does having dinner mean to Italians?A.A way to make friends.B.An opportunity to relax.C.A choice to keep healthy.D.An excuse to escape from the world.Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones (音调) required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges. Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch (音高).One of the study’s authors, Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music “actually tunes our sensory system”. This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs, Dr. Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.Mandarin (普通话) speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding (编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do. This is because in Mandarin and otherAsian languages, pitch plays a central role. A single syllable word can have several meanings. For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who had studied an instrument for at least six years. As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word “mi” in three of its meanings. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds. The lead author of the study, Patrick C.M. Wong, said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments.7.Why is it difficult for a foreigner to learn Chinese?A.They don’t try hard enough.B.It is easier to have musical training.C.Discovering changes in pitch is not easy.D.The tones needed to speak and understand are similar.8.What can we know about the study?A.Foreign speakers had better performance.B.People had to process the sounds by hand.C.Half of the people had learned instruments.D.A piece of music was played in the background.9.What does the underlined word “hesitate” in Paragraph 3 mean?A.think aloud B.think twice C.show up D.show off 10.What would be the best title for this passage?A.Much more Difficult to Learn MandarinB.Schools Need to Develop Music CoursesC.Pitch Plays a Central Role in Chinese LearningD.Language Study Benefits from Music TrainingIn an ideal world, we would be able to devote as much time to sports as we feel we need. But in reality, with growing demands in both work and family, we can only jump at the chance for our physical exercise when we can. Making the most of that time to practice Yin Yang yoga, whichmixes the dynamic and slow-paced elements of yoga, helps keep you active and relaxed.Yin and Yang are the Taoist concepts representing a balance of opposite forces which are also interconnected. Yin is inactive, cooling, and negative, associated with the female force. Yang is active, warming, and positive, associated with action and movement. They are complementary to one another, as one cannot exist without the other.Yin Yang yoga is a combination of high-energy movement which builds energy, increases strength and promotes stamina (耐力), followed by the more restful practice of Yin to give us a deeper stretch (拉伸) and calm the nervous system. If you have a busy and active life you may feel more in Yang, so taking some cooler, slower Yin yoga practice into your routine may help you feel calmer and more balanced. If you are practicing for an hour, divide the time in half. Warm up with sun salutations (拜日式瑜伽), continue into a dynamic flow and then move on to some standing postures. After half an hour your heart will be pumping, muscles tighten up and you are hopefully feeling energetic, but ready for a rest. Then pick five Yin postures to hold for 3-5 minutes, or even longer if you are enjoying them!As ever with yoga, if you are a beginner or have health issues, always attend a class with a trained instructor first to guide you safely through the yoga practice and avoid injury.11.What can be inferred from paragraph 1?A.Most of our sports time should be spent on Yin Yang yoga.B.We’d better devote as much time to physical exercise as we can.C.Busy schedule makes it impossible for us to do any form of sports.D.Yin Yang yoga can be a choice of physical exercise when time is tight.12.What does the underlined word “complementary” probably mean?A.Independent from one another.B.Competitive against one another.C.Similar to each other but unable to work together as a whole.D.Different from each other but together making a good combination.13.Which of the following might be the benefit of Yin postures?A.Relaxing muscles.B.Building stamina.C.Strengthening the body.D.Quickening the heartbeat.14.What suggestion does the writer give in the last two paragraphs?A.Hold each Yin posture for longer than 5 minutes.B.Do not practice yoga when you are not in good health.C.Start your yoga practice under the guidance of a trainer.D.Spare half an hour for five Yin postures in every yoga practice.I was eleven years old, standing outside when I watched the house that I grew up in burn to the ground. A few minutes earlier, I was asleep in my nice, warm bed.My grandmother’s bedroom was just next to mine and my brother’s. A fire had broken out there and awakened her first. While I stumbled(蹒跚) around in the smoke and darkness, my brother ran from room to room quickly, waking everyone in the house. The house. however, was over 50 years old and made of wood. Before we could do anything the fire consumed(毁灭) it. We all made it outside before the flames destroyed every room.I stood there shivering(颤抖) while the fire destroyed my hooks, clothes, and toys. I watched helplessly while my mum cried. I wondered what was going to happen to us now that we had lost all of our things. As I looked around, though, I realized something for the first time: The things that matter aren’t things. I saw my elder brother running to get help. I saw my grandmother and dad hugging together. I realised at that moment that we were all alive. Everything that was important survived the fire. Our lives would continue. We would survive without the things that were burning. We would all be around to love each other for many years to come. And that was all that mattered.I still think of that fire in the night that helped me to become who I am today. It helped me to learn that the love we share is far more important than the things we have. Love others. Help everyone. Let the fire inside of you make this world a warmer place.15.Who found the fire at first?A.The author himself.B.The author’s grandmother,C.The author’s mother.D.The author’s elder brother.16.Which word could best describe the author when he ran outside?A.Calm.B.Helpful.C.Frightened.D.Disappointed. 17.What’s the meaning of the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4?A.Lost things can’t come back.B.Getting others’ help is necessary.C.Material wealth isn’t the most important.D.Lives must continue on if we lack love.18.What happens to the author after the fire?A.He plans to build a new house.B.He is still what he used to be.C.He only shares his love with his family.D.He is ready to help those in need.Compared with hotels, hostels (旅社) are more economical, which have gradually become the first choice for young people. Considered as one of the new seven wonders of the world, it is a top tourist attraction in Cusco, Peru. The fire, which had damaged an area about half the size of Vatican City, was started on June 28, 2022 by farmers burning grass to prepare to plant new seeds. Since Tuesday, about 20 hectares (49 acres) had been affected by the fire, the mayor of the nearby city of Cusco said. The fire’s remoteness has greatly influenced firefighting efforts. “We have already been fighting the forest fire for two days and it has not been possible to get it under control, for the area is quite far away and hard to reach,” said Roberto Abarca, director of the Cusco Risk Management and Security Office. Some 600 firefighters and volunteers battled the fire, and helicopters dropped retardants (阻燃剂) in front of the flames to prevent them from spreading to archaeological (考古学的) sites. “The fire has left the critical zone where there are archaeological monuments, but is still burning fiercely,” the government said. While South America’s top archaeological treasure was safe from the fire, experts feared the destruction of thousands of acres of nearby forest would damage Machu Picchu’s attraction to tourists.22.What can be learned about Machu Picchu?A.it has a history of a thousand years.B.How and why it was built remains unknown.C.It covers an area from southern Ecuador to central Chile.D.It is regarded as one of the new seven wonders of the world.23.What do we know about the fire from the passage?A.It was put out before it reached archaeological sites.B.Its remoteness added to the difficulty of firefighting.C.It was started when farmers were planting new seeds.D.It affected about 49 acres of Machu Picchu altogether.24.How does the writer show the seriousness of the fire?A.By using numbers.B.By giving definitions.C.By providing examples.D.By making comparison.25.Where is the passage probably taken from?A.A story collection.B.A tourist brochure.C.A weekly newspaper.D.A geography magazine.Ben opened his book and studied the instructions to build a toy boat. His best friend Isaac raced around the yard. Ben always worked hard while Issac just wanted to play and have fun.Six years later, at sixteen, Ben was taken on as an apprentice (学徒) ship builder. For the next few years, he worked hard and paid attention to everything he was shown. The manager of the shipyard approached Ben one day. “I’ve had my eye on you, Ben. You’re one of the hardest workers I have ever seen. You have gone from apprentice to lead worker to foreman. Although you are young, we are promoting (提拔) you to supervisor (监督员) over the entire yard.” Ben shook the manager’s hand. A sense of pride filled his chest.Over the next several years, Ben continued to work hard. He created his own ship building company and built a famous ship. He was proud of himself for working to make his dream of becoming a respected shipbuilder come true. One evening, Ben happened into a butcher shop. I stepped outside without being noticed, forced a cheese roll into my mouth, and headed to the Kaikoura dolphin-watching tour office. With more adrenaline (肾上腺素) than I had jumping out of a plane, I put on my flippers (脚蹼) quickly and got ready for the adventure. The moment I dove off the water, I was shockedawake. No amount of coffee, tea, or sugar has ever given me such a strong wake-up. It turns out that the ocean is freezing at 5 a.m. before the sunrise. Don’t be scared off by the temperature, though, because 5 a.m. is when the dolphins are most playful! After a little while, I was face to face with a wild dusky dolphin! At one moment, it jumped up high into the air while the next it dove deep into the water. It made strange whale noises to draw the attention of more members of the group, including a tiny baby dolphin no bigger than a cat. What impressed me most was that the baby dolphin came close up, swam around playfully and kept looking at me with those black glassy eyes, seeming most interested in this strange fish-like creature that kept getting twisted (缠绕) in her own flippers. The sun rose, warming my back as I continued to struggle with my flippers among the most elegant animals in the ocean. It was the most beautiful sight, as the dark blue of the ocean turned light greenish-blue, brightening our swimming companions for the early hours of the morning. The practice of swimming with wild dolphins is banned in the North Island, where the species of Hector’s dolphins are in decline. But in Kaikoura, the practice is quite common and actually helping to increase the dolphin populations.By supporting this adventurous experience, you’re supporting dolphin conservation. 30.Why was I shocked awake when diving off the water?A.Adrenaline went up.B.The water was freezing cold.C.I had drunk a lot of strong coffee.D.I was surprised by the playful dolphins. 31.What problem did I have under the water?A.I had difficulty handling my flippers.B.A wild dolphin kept jumping beside me. C.My strange appearance scared dolphins.D.The baby dolphin swam around playfully. 32.How did I find my dolphin-watching?A.Dangerous but exciting.B.Impressive and meaningful.C.Scary but unforgettable.D.Adventurous and tiring.33.What is the best title for the passage?A.A Deep Dive into the Ocean.B.Supporting Dolphin Conservation.C.Dolphins-My Playful Companions.D.Swimming with Wild Dolphins in Kaikoura. In 1916, two girls of rich families, best friends from Aubun, N.Y Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to instruct in a one -room school house. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them, to move to Elkhead, Colo. to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with strings was a surprise. Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruff’s granddaughter. Why did they go then? Well, they wanted to do something useful. Soon, however, they realized what they had undertaken. They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy (隐私),rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt (被子) when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings, Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children crying from the cold. In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.In Wickenden’s book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism (女权主义),which of course influenced the girls’ decision to go to Elkhead. A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which involved (牵涉) drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy’s return to Auburn.Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism (坚忍) of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff, on her horse, looking down from a hill top: ”When the sun slipped behind the mountains, it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals: foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter.“34.Why did Dorothy and Rosamond go to the Rocky Mountains?A.To teach in a school.B.To study American history.C.To write a book.D.To do sightseeing.35.What can we learn about the girls from paragraph 3?A.They enjoyed much respect.B.They had a room with a bathtub.C.They lived with the local kids.D.They suffered some difficulty.36.Which part of Wickenden’s writing is hair-raising?A.The extreme climate of Aubum.B.The living conditions in Elkhead.C.The railroad building in the Rockies.D.The natural beauty of the West.37.Where does the text probably come from?A.A news report.B.A book review.C.A children’s story.D.A diary entry参考答案1.B2.C3.A【导语】本文是一篇议论文。

Why Did Darker and Lighter Human

Why Did Darker and Lighter Human Skin Colors Evolve? The human species started in Africa. To protect ourselves from the harsh and direct sunlight, we evolved with higher levels of melanin in our bodies. This causes darker skin. Dark hair is also a favorable evolution --- less light can pass through dark hair than light, protecting the skin.Over time as the human race migrated, mutation(变异)continued. In the branch that became “white”, mutations that produced paler skin and lighter hair occurred. This was an advantageous mutation because these humans were living in areas with less direct sunlight, so needed to take advantage of the small amounts they were exposed to (we need sunlight to produce vitamin D). Through natural and self-selection, the genes for paler skin and blonde hair survived. Othermutations for lighter hair colors (lighter brown, red) remained for similar reasons. The reason why other races did not evolve blonde hair is as follows: First, they were not given an environmental advantage, so did not increase chances of survival and reproduction. Second, the genes for darker hair colors are dominant over genes for lighter hair color. Without selective pressures (the environment advantage) to encourage this mutation, any spontaneous hair color mutations would be lost in future generations without other recessive genes to allow it to be expressed.Look at it this way --- a few hot blondes randomly showed up in early northern human populations. They used to be healthy, dark-haired humans with a hidden blonde gene. Eventually those dark-haired babies married each other, hidden blonde genes met up, and blonde babies appeared. Blonde babies were just as healthy as dark-haired babies, so the genes became more common.Let’s say the same few blondes showed up in southern human populations. They would burn in the sun and not be able to survive in those conditions. Some dark-haired humans might bang them because they were just lying there ... but they were not ideal mates as they were unhealthy in that environment and could not survive as well. A few babies may have been born with hidden blonde genes, but if a second generation blonde baby was born, they would also struggle to survive in that environment. As a result, blonde genes did not explode.(选自BBC)1. What is the major function of “melanin” in our bodies?A. It prevents us from skin cancer caused by the direct sunlight.B. It helps people to evolve throughout the human history.C. It helps people with the mutation process during migration.D. It makes our body darker to protect us from sunlight.2. What can we infer from the passage?A. People with pale skin can survive better in places with direct sunlight,B. People’s genes mutate with the change of the environment.C. All vitamins are produced with the help of sunlight exposure.D. Without the environmental advantage, the gene of blonde hairs can never be expressed.3. Why is there less blonde-haired population in southern places?A. Southern people do not have the genes of blonde hair.B. People with blonde hair can hardly survive in southern places.C. Immigration has quickened the mutation process.D. Blonde hair can hardly attract ideal mates in southern places.4. What is this passage mainly about?A. Why difference races have different colors in skin and hair.B. Why most Africans have been dark in color since ancient.C. How evolution matters in the history of human civilization.D. The differences between the northern and southern people in hair color.

高考英语百日训练之阅读理解(67)含答案解析【题文】Hair Loss (Alopecia)Information about male pattern baldness(秃顶) causes, triggers and treatment in the UKIn contrary to popular belief, hair loss—or alopecia—can start at any age. While it is associated with mature males, and statistics show it does mainly affect men above 40, the reality is you can notice symptoms in your 30s, or even 20s and teen years.

The hair style of high school students was once an interesting subject in the newspaper. Almost all the educators, top-ranking government officials and teachers said that we high school students should not pick on the prescribed hair style of ours. Acc ording to them, the sole duty of a student‘s was to study and study and the inner part of the head was more important than thehair that covers the scalp. Despite what they said, I still don‘t like hair style imposed on us high school students. I isn‘t bea utiful and it is unnatural. It looks like some dry dark grass on a boy student‘s head and a very small black hat on a girl student‘s. I am tired of having my hair cut every four weeks, yet I am obliged to do that because the military instructor so frequently inspects the hair style of every student. To me hair style is strictly a personal matter. I like to have my hair a little longer and be spared the trouble of having it cut every so often. We students labor under so many rules in school and we are taught to obey all of them. I think a uniform plain hair style is not necessary at all. Why can‘t we do as we like? We are eager to see the time when we are free to choose our own hair styles in our post-high school days.My cityI live in Hangzhou. It is a beautigul city. It‘s my hometown.Every year it attracts large number of tourists come here all over the world. We have Xihu here and many places of interest.I think you will love it when you see it oneday.I want to grow up quickly.Andj I will try my best to protect our city and make a contribution to it.I think if everyone protectsit ,my city will becone much more beautiful.I love my city!To Borrow Arrows with Thatched BoatsThis is an interesting story from the Three Kingdoms period 220-280 in ancient China, when the Wei and Wu kingdoms joined together to fight against the Wei Kingdom. Zhou Yu, the chief military commander of the Wu Kingdom, ordered Zhu Ge Liang the chief minister of the Shu Kingdom and generally regarded as the kingdom‘s to p master-mind to produce 100,000 arrows within 10 days."Three days is enough, " said Zhu. He also aGREed to be punished if he failed to complete the order.Zhou mocked that Zhu was looking for self-destruction. On the one hand, Zhou ordered his troops not to provide Zhu with materials to make the arrows. He also sent Lu Su to see how Zhu was dealing the problem. In fact, Zhu had already realized that this was a plot. He asked Lu who was kind-hearted to lend him 20 boats, each lined with straw scarecrows and manned by 30 soldiers. He also requested that Lu not tell Zhou what was happening. When Lu came again to see Zhu, he did not find anything unusual. Nothing happened on the second day either. In the early morning of the third day, Zhu invited Lu for a boat ride. The 20 boats were tied together with strong ropes. Zhu‘s fleet sailed toward the camp of Cao Cao who was the king of the Wei Kingdom.A thick mist had spread over the surface of the river. People could hardly see each other on t he river. When Zhu‘s fleet got close to the Cao camp before dawn, Zhu ordered his soldiers to shout and beat drums to fake an attack. Zhu and Lu simply sat inside one of the boats and drank wine to enjoy themselves. As soon as the Cao camp heard the shouting and drum beating, they mistook it for a surprise attack by the Zhou camp. Since they could see nobody on the river, they gathered 3,000 bowmen and ordered them to shoot arrows. The front of the scarecrows was quickly shot full of arrows. After a while, Zhu had his fleet turn around to expose the other side of the scarecrows. When this side was also shot full of arrows, the day broke. Zhu ordered his soldiers to return to their base port. The soldiers shouted, "Thank you, Cao, for your arrows." After they got back to their camp, they collected more than 100,000 arrows from the scarecrows.TsunamiTsunami is usually caused by strong earthquakes that happen inoceans.Great sea waves will be pushed towards the shores with great speed. If the pe ople along the shores don‘t know tsunami is coming, they will suffer great damage. For example, the tusnami, which happened in the Indian Ocean on December 26,2021,killed more than 150,000 people in Indonesia,SirLanka,India,Thailand and other lions of people were injured and became homeless.Tsunami is a natural disaster. We should set up more advanced warning systems along the shores,on the islands and in man-made staellites.Besides,we should protect our oceans further instead of destroying them.My Favorite ProfessionIf you are a junior 大三学生 or a senior 大四学生, you may be frequently asked, "What would you like to do in the future?" Whenever people ask me this question, my answer isalways the same, "To be a teacher." Teaching has been my favorite profession all the time. My dream of being a teacher was rooted in my childhood. The good natured, patient and strict teachers in primary school made a strong impression on me. As I grow up, I know more about my desired profession. Teachers are the engineers of human soul. That is to say, they play roles inthe forming and shaping塑造of students‘ intellectual and psychological make-up. Teachers are lifelong learners while instructing students. Nowadays governments at all levels put more stress on the roles of education in information society, versatile 多才多艺的 teachers are urgently needed. To be a qualified teacher in the new century, I must prepare right now. hair love tell us英文文章,

hair love tell us英文文章,

hair love tell us英文文章,Hair Love Tell UsHair, a unique and diverse aspect of human identity, has long been a subject of fascination and cultural significance. From ancient civilizations to modern times, the way we style, care for, and perceive our hair has been a reflection of our personal, social, and often, political beliefs. In this essay, we will explore the profound ways in which hair can serve as a powerful medium for self-expression, cultural identity, and social commentary. At its core, hair is a physical manifestation of our individuality. The texture, color, and length of our hair can be a source of pride, a means of self-exploration, and a tool for personal transformation. For many individuals, their hair is a cherished aspect of their physical appearance, a canvas upon which they can paint their unique stories and identities. Whether it's the tightly coiled curls of an individual of African descent, the sleek and straight locks of an East Asian heritage, or the vibrant hues of a daring fashion statement, hair has the power to convey the depth and richness of human diversity.Beyond the purely aesthetic, hair can also serve as a powerful symbolof cultural identity and heritage. In many societies, specific hairstyles or grooming practices have been closely tied to the traditions, beliefs, and social structures of a particular group. For instance, the intricate braiding patterns of African cultures or the elaborate updos of traditional Japanese geisha have long been recognized as visual markers of cultural belonging and pride. By embracing and preserving these hairstyles, individuals can not only honor their ancestral roots but also assert their cultural identity in the face of societal pressures to conform to mainstream beauty standards.Furthermore, hair has often been a site of political and social resistance. Throughout history, marginalized communities have used their hair as a means of challenging oppressive societal norms and asserting their right to self-determination. The Afro hairstyle, for example, became a powerful symbol of the Black Power movementin the 1960s and 70s, representing a rejection of Eurocentric beauty standards and a celebration of African heritage. Similarly, the decision to wear one's hair in its natural state, without the use of chemical straighteners or other hair-altering products, has been viewed by many as a political statement that challenges the systemic racism and discrimination that has long been associated with certain hair textures. In more recent years, the conversation surrounding hair has expanded to include issues of gender, sexuality, and bodilyautonomy. The freedom to experiment with one's appearance, including the way one chooses to style their hair, has become increasingly recognized as a fundamental human right. From the rise of the "man bun" to the growing acceptance of gender-fluid hairstyles, the ways in which individuals express their identity through hair have become increasingly diverse and fluid. However, this newfound freedom has not come without its challenges. Societal biases and prejudices surrounding hair continue to persist, often leading to discrimination in the workplace, schools, and other areas of public life. Black individuals, in particular, have faced a long history of hair-based discrimination, with policies and practices that have sought to police and control the way their hair is presented. This has led to a growing movement of resistance, with individuals and organizations advocating for the protection of the right to wear one's hair in a manner that reflects one's personal and cultural identity. In conclusion, hair is a powerful and multifaceted aspect of the human experience. It serves as a canvas for self-expression, a marker of cultural identity, and a site of political and social resistance. As we continue to navigate the complex and ever-evolving landscape of hair and beauty, it is essential that we embrace the diversity and richness of human hair in all its forms, and work to dismantle thesystemic biases and prejudices that have long sought to limit and control the way we present ourselves to the world.。

Step 1 Vocabulary词汇表animal welfare 动物福利companion 伴侣man’s best friend 狗canine 犬puppy 小狗,幼犬coat(动物的)皮毛pooch 狗breed 品种Cockapoo 可卡颇犬Cocker Spaniels 可卡犬puppy farming 幼犬养殖smuggling 走私,贩卖breeder 饲养动物的人irresponsible 不负责任的legally 合法地,依法rescue centre 救援中心registered 已注册的pet 宠物animal behaviourist 动物行为学专家fear-aggression 害怕受攻击lives have been turned upside down 生活变得一团糟separation anxiety 分离焦虑症Step 2 Reading and understandingFor some people, there’s no better companion than man’s best friend--a dog. This four-legged canine can bring comfort and joy and provide much-needed exercise for you when it needs walkies! This probably explains why dog ownership increased last year because people spent more time at home during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown. It was demand for puppies in particular that saw the biggest increase. Who couldn’t resist their playful personalities, adorable eyes, and super-soft coats? However, as demand for a new pooch increased, so did the price tag. Popular breeds, such as Cockapoos and Cocker Spaniels, saw even sharper price increases, and puppies have been selling for £3,000 or more.Animal welfare charities fear that high prices could encourage puppy farming, smuggling or dog theft. And a BBC investigation found some breeders have been selling puppies and kittens on social media sites –something charities have called “extremely irresponsible”.But despite some new owners purchasing a dog legally, maybe from a rescue centre or registered breeder, they’ve proved to be ill-prepared for life with a new pet, and the pet itself has found it hard to come to terms with life in a new home. Animal behaviourists in the UK have reported a surge in requests to help dogs suffering from fear-aggression after their lives have been turned upside down.Looking to the future, there are concerns about the welfare of these much-loved pets. Ian Atkin, manager of the Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary in the UK, told the BBC: “At the moment, the dogs are having a great time, but separation anxiety could still surface when people go back to work.” And Claire Calder from the UK’s Dogs Trust rescue charity says “the economic situation also means that some people may find they can’t afford to look after a dog.” Th e message is not to buy a puppy in haste and to pick one that fits into your lifestyle. The Best Kind of Love

The Best Kind of Love I have a friend who is falling in love. She honestly claims the sky is bluer. Mozart moves her to tears. She has lost 15 pounds and looks like a cover girl."I’m young again!” she shouts exuberantly. As my friend raves on about her new love, I’ve taken a good look at my old one. My husband of almost 20 years, Scott, has gained 15 pounds. Once a marathon runner, he now runs only down hospital halls. His hairline is receding and his body shows the signs of long working hours and too many candy bars. Yet he can still give me a certain look across a restaurant table and I want to ask for the check and head home. When my friend asked me “What will make this love last?” I ran through all the obvious reasons: commitment, shared interest s, unselfishness, physical attraction, communication. Yet there’s more. We still have fun. Spontaneous good times. Yesterday, after slipping the rubber band off the rolled up newspaper, Scott flipped it playfully at me: this led to an all-out war. Last Saturday at the grocery, we split the list and raced each other to see who could make it to the checkout first. Even washing dishes can be a blast. We enjoy simply being together. And there are surprises. One time I came home to find a note on the front door that led me to another note, then another, until I reached the walk-in closet. I opened the door to find Scott holding a “pot of gold” (my cooking kettle) and the “treasure” of a gift package. Sometimes I leave him notes on the mirror and little presents under his pillow. There is understanding. I understand why he must play basketball with the guys. And he understands why, once a year, I must get away from the house, the kids -and even him -to meet my sisters for a few days of nonstop talking and laughing. There is sharing. Not only do we share household worries and parental burdens - we also share ideas. Scott came home from a convention last month and presented me with a thick historical novel. Though he prefers thrillers and science fiction, he had read the novel on the plane. He touched my heart when he explained it was because he wanted to be able to exchange ideas about the book after I’d read it.There is forgiveness. When I’m embarrasssingly loud and crazy at parties, Scott forgives me. When he confe ssed losing some of our savings in the stock market, I gave him a hug and said, “It’s okay. It’s only money.”There is sensitivity. Last week he walked through the door with that look that tells me it’s been a tough day. After he spent some time with the kids, I asked him what happened. He told me about a 60-year-old woman who’d had a stroke. He wept as he recalled the woman’s husband standing beside her bed, caressing her hand. How was he going to tell this husband of 40 years that his wife would probably never recover? I shed a few tears myself. Because of the medical crisis. Because there were still people who have been married 40 years. Because my husband is still moved and concerned after years of hospital rooms and dying patients. There is faith. Last Tuesday a friend came over and confessed her fear that her husband is losing his courageous battle with cancer. On Wednesday I went to lunch with a friend who is struggling to reshape her life after divorce. On Thursday a neighbor called to talk about the frightening effects of Alzheimer’s disease on her father-in-law’s personality. On Friday a childhood friend called long-distance to tell me her father had died. I hung up the phone and thought, this is too much heartache for one week. Through my tears, as I went out to run some errands, I noticed the boisterous orange blossoms of the gladiolus outside my window. I heard the delighted laughter of my son and his friend as they played. I caught sight of a wedding party emerging from a neighbor’s house. The bride, dressed in satin and lace, tossed her bouquet to her cheering friends. That night, I told my husband about these events. We helped each other acknowledge the cycles of life and that the joys counter the sorrows. It was enough to keep us going. Finally, there is knowing. I know Scott will throw his laundry just shy of the hamper every night; he’ll be late to most appointments and eat the last chocolate in the box. He knows that I sleep with a pillow over my head; I’ll lock us out of the house at a regula r basis, and I will also eat the last chocolate.I guess our love lasts because it is comfortable. No, the sky is not bluer: it’s just a familiar hue. We don’t feel particularly young: we’ve experienced too much that has contributed to our growth and wisdom, taking its toll on our bodies, and created our memories.I hope we’ve got what it takes to make our love last. As a bride, I had Scott’s wedding band engraved with Robert Browning’s line “Grow old along with me!” We’re following those instructions.“If anything is real, the heart will make it plain.”.- 1 - / 1。

Title: Exploring the Marvels of Hair。

Hair, a fascinating aspect of human anatomy, holds a myriad of cultural, social, and biological significance. From its evolutionary origins to its role in personal identity, hair serves as a canvas for self-expression and a window into human diversity.Firstly, let's delve into the biological marvels of hair. Composed primarily of a protein called keratin, hair originates from hair follicles embedded in the skin. These follicles regulate the growth, texture, and color of hair, making each strand unique to an individual. Interestingly, the texture and shape of hair are determined by thefollicle's shape, whether it's straight, wavy, or curly. Moreover, hair plays a crucial role in thermoregulation. In colder climates, hair follicles contract to trap heat close to the body, providing insulation. Conversely, inwarmer temperatures, follicles relax, allowing heat to escape and aiding in cooling the body. This evolutionary adaptation showcases the versatility and functionality of hair beyond mere aesthetics.Beyond its biological functions, hair holds immense cultural and social significance across different societies. Throughout history, hairstyles have served as markers of social status, cultural identity, and even political affiliation. For example, elaborate hairstyles were often associated with nobility in ancient civilizations, symbolizing wealth and prestige.Furthermore, hair has been a vehicle for self-expression and individuality. From ancient civilizations to modern times, people have adorned their hair with various ornaments, dyes, and styles to reflect personal taste and societal trends. Hairstyles can communicate a wealth of information about a person's identity, personality, andeven their subcultural affiliations. In contemporary society, the beauty industry hascapitalized on the diverse array of hair textures and styles, offering products and services catered toindividual preferences. The popularity of haircare routines, styling tools, and salon treatments underscores society's fascination with hair aesthetics and grooming practices. However, it's essential to acknowledge the challenges and prejudices individuals may face due to their hair. Across the globe, certain hair textures and styles havebeen stigmatized or deemed unprofessional based on societal standards of beauty. This has led to movements advocatingfor hair acceptance and challenging discriminatory norms, promoting the celebration of natural hair in all its forms. In conclusion, hair is not merely strands of keratin protruding from our scalps; it's a complex and multifaceted aspect of human biology and culture. From its intricate biological functions to its profound cultural significance, hair embodies the diversity and beauty of the human experience. As we continue to explore and celebrate the marvels of hair, let us embrace its uniqueness and the stories it tells about individuals and societies alike.。

Washington Post
How “Hair Love“went from Kickstarter project to Oscar-winning film
In2017,Matthew A.Cherry created a Kickstarter campaign in hopes of funding an animated short film about a young black father who learns how to do his daughter's hair.Cherry had been thinking about the project for several years, but was inspired to make it happen after seeing a flood of Internet videos featuring black fathers gingerly tackling
the unruly tresses of their daughters.
Three years later,Cherry has won an Oscar for his vision.
Lively Kinky Curls
In just under seven minutes,“Hair Love“follows Zuri,a7-year-old with a lively mop of kink In just under seven minutes, “Hair Love” follows Zuri, a 7-year-old with a lively mop of kinky curls who wakes upon a special day and tries to do her hair with the help of a video made by her mother, a natural-hair vlogger.
It does not go well.
Enter Zuri's father,Stephen,a young, tattooed man with dreadlocks. He also tries(and fails) to do Zuri’s hair, but after his daughter breaks into tears, he tries agiain--moisturizing and detangling Zuri’s curls section by section--before twisting them into a stylish row of puff buns.
Two Goals
In an interview with The Washington Post,Cherry said his goal with“Hair Love”was two fold:He wanted the film to encourage kids to embrace their natural hair.He also wanted the film to portray the powerful images he had seen in those Internet videos but typically had not seen
on screen, particularly when it came to animated films:black fathers who were deeply present
in their children's lives.
The response to the Kickstarter was overwhelming. The campaign blew past its initial $75,000goal,then a second$125,000goal - eventually pulling in more than$280,000,a
record for projects whose creators have identified them as animated shorts on the crowd funding platform.
Tear-Jerker Plot Twist
The story features echoes of his early days in filmmaking:The short's emotional ending reveals why Zuri's mother was unavailable to do her hair,a tear-jerker plot twist that was inspired by Cherry's days as a music video director.
“I always try to think of twist endings. You want to try to keep people entertained and kind oftake them on a roller coaster of emotion,“he said. “I just always had the ending in mind.”
Implications
Cherry knows“Hair Love“can have real-life implications for black children struggling to love their hair in spite of white standards of beauty. In recent weeks,a Texas teen named DeAndre Arnold made news.Arnold was warned he couldn't participate in his high school graduation unless he cut his shoulder-length dreadlocks. Now,he'll be in a different kind of spotlight. The short film's team invited Arnold to attend the Oscars ceremony with them on February9.。
