2）perform at〔on〕sth演奏…

She will be performing at the piano.她将演奏钢琴。

How well your daughter performs on the piano!你女儿钢琴弹得真好!

3) perform in sth在…演出;

The singer had never performed in New York before.这位歌唱家以前从未在纽约演唱过。

Our team performed well in the match yesterday.我们队在昨天的比赛中表现出色。

perform sth in sth在…扮演

She performed a part in the play.她在此剧中扮演过一个角色。

3. arise /ə‘raiz/ vi. (arose, arisen)出现；发生

arise from〔out of〕sth产生于,起因于（=result from）

Accidents often arise from carelessness.事故常起因于粗心。

Did anything interesting arise from the meeting?会上发生了什么有趣的事吗？

4. combine /kəm'bain/ vt. (使) 联合，(使)结合

1）combine sth against sth 结合起来以对付

Let us combine our two firms against our competitors.让我们两家公司联合起来,对付和我们竞争的那些公司。2）combine with sth与…结合（= unite with）

If your talent combines with diligence, you can excel in your pursuit.如果你把天赋与勤奋结合起来,你所追求的事业便会出类拔萃。

Only when our theory combines with practice can the former become a reliable knowledge.只有当理论与实践相结合时,它才变成经得住考验的知识。

5. represent /,repri'zent/ vt.代表

1）用作及物动词

S+～+ n./pron.

He will represent his school at the meeting.他将代表学校出席会议。

Let me try to represent my ideas to you in another way.让我用另一种方式来向你表述我的意见。

2）S+～+that-clause

He represented that he had fought in the Huai Hai Campaign.他自称他参加过淮海战役。

The pilots respectfully represented that they were not at all tired.飞行员郑重表示他们一点也不累。

3）S+～+ n./pron.+as/to be n.

He represented himself as an expert.他声称自己是一位专家。

He represented himself as a friend to the workers, but now we know the truth.他自称是工人们的朋友,但现在我们知道真相了。

6. quit /kwit/ vt., vi. 停止；辞职

1）quit sb/oneself of sb/sth使摆脱（=rid oneself of (sth wanted)

What he said quit me of fear.他的话使我摆脱了恐惧。

We soon quitted ourselves of fear.我们很快便消除了恐惧。

2）用于be ～ed结构

We are quit of our difficulties.我们摆脱了困境。

He got quit of his debts.他还清了债务。

7. appreciate /ə'pri:ʃʃieit/ vt. 鉴赏；感激；意识到

1）用作不及物动词S+～(+A)

Things appreciate as time goes on.货物价格逐日上涨。

The land has appreciated greatly since the new railway was built.自新铁路建成后,这片地的价值大为增加。

2）用作及物动词S+ ～+n./pron.

She can appreciate her friends rightly.她能正确评价她的朋友。

I appreciate your help very much.我非常感谢你的帮助。

3）S+～+ v -ing

We appreciate your helping us.谢谢你帮助我们。

He appreciates being advised.他得到忠告,十分高兴。

4）S+～+wh-clause: I do not appreciate fully what he means.我完全不理解他的意思。

8. protect/prəˈtɛkt/保护；防卫

protect sb/sth against〔from〕sb/sth保护…免受…(=prevent…from…=keep…from…)
