Houses of the FutureWhat will houses be like in thirty years' time? No one really knows, but architects are trying to predict. D (46)Future houses will have to be flexible. In thirty years' time even more of us will be working from home. So we will have to be able to use areas of the house for work for part of the day and for living for the rest. Families grow and change with children arriving growing up and leaving home. E (47) Nothing will be as fixed as it is now. The house will always be changing to meet changing needs.Everyone agrees that in thirty years' time we will be living in "intelligent" houses. We will be able to talk to our kitchen machines and discuss with them what to do. Like this "We'll be having a party this weekend. What food shall we cook?”C (48) We will be able to leave most of the cooking to the machines, just tasting things from time to time to check. The house of the future will be personal-each house will be different. A (49) You won't have to paint them - you'll be able to tell the wall to change the color! And if you don't like the color the next day, you will be able to have a new one. B (50)A You will be able to change the color of the wall easily.B The only thing you won't be able to do is move the house somewhere else!C And the machine will tell us what food we will have to buy and how to cook it.D What will our home be like then?E The house of the future will have to grow and change with the family.F The kids might take their bedrooms with them as they leave.SemcoAt 21, Ricardo Semler became boss of his father's business in Brazil, Semco, which sold pads for ships. Semler Junior worked like a madman, from 7.30 am, until midnight every day. One afternoon, while touring a factory in New York, he collapsed. The doctor who treated him said, "There's nothing wrong with you. But if you continue like this, you'll find a new home in our hospital." Semler got the message. He changed the way he worked. In fact, he changed the way his employees worked too.He let his workers take more responsibility so that they would be the ones worrying when things went wrong. He allowed them to set their own salaries, and he cut all the jobs he thought were unnecessary, like receptionists and secretaries. B (46) "Everyone at Semco, even top managers, meets guests in reception, does the photocopying, sends faxes, types letters and dials the phone."He completely reorganized the office: instead of walls, they have plants at Semco, so bosses can't shut themselves away from everyone else. C (47) As for uniforms, some people wear suits and others wear T-shirts.Semler says, "We have a sales manager named Rubin Agater who sits there reading the newspaper hour after hour. He doesn't even pretend to be busy; But when a Semco pump on the other side of the world fails and millions of gallons of oil are about to spill into the sea, Rubin springs into action. D (48) That's when he earns his salary. No one cares if he doesn't look busy the rest of the time."Semco has flexible working hours; the employees decide when they need to arrive at work. The employees also evaluate their bosses twice a year. F (49)It sounds perfect, but does it work? The answer is in the numbers: in the last six years, Semco's revenues [lave gone from $35 million to $212 million. The company has grown from eight hundred employees t03,000. Why?Semler says it's because of "peer pressure". Peer pressure makes everyone work hard for everyone else. A (50) In other words, Ricardo Semler treats his workers like adults and expects them to act like adults. And they do.A If someone isn't doing his job well, the other workers will not allow the situation to continue.B This saved money and brought more equality to the company.C And the workers are free to decorate their workspace as they wan.D He knows everything there !s to know about our pumps and how to fix them.E Most managers spend their time making it difficult for workers to work.F Also, Semco lets its workers use the company's machines for their own projects, and makes them take holidays for at least thirty days a year.I Know Just How You FeelDo you feel sad? Happy? Angry? You may think that the way you show these emotions isunique. Well, think again. Even the expression of the most personal feelings can be classified, according to Mind Reading, a DVD displaying every possible human emotion. It demonstrates412 distinct ways in which we feel: the first visual dictionary of the human heart.Attempts to classify expressions began in the mid-1800s, when Darwin divided the emotionsinto six types - anger, fear, sadness, disgust, surprise and enjoyment. E (46) Every otherfeeling was thought to derive from Darwin's small group. More complex expressions of emotionwere probably learned and therefore more specific to each culture. But now it is believedthat many more facial expressions are shared worldwide. A (47) The Mind Reading DVD isa systematic visual record of these expressions. The project was conceived by a Cambridge professor as an aid for people with autism(孤独症),who have difficulty both reading and expressing emotions. But it quickly becameapparent that it had broader uses. Actors and teachers, for example, need to understand awide range of expressions. The professor and his research team first had to define an "emotion".F (48) Using this definition,1,512 emotion terms were identified and discussed. This listwas eventually reduced to 412, from "afraid" to "wanting".Once these emotions were defined and classified, a DVD seemed the clearest and most efficient way to display them. In Mind Reading, each expression is acted out by six different actors in three seconds. D (49) The explanation for this is simple: we may find it difficult to describe emotions using words, but we instantly recognise one when we seeit on someone's face. "It was really clear when the actors had got it right," says CathyCollis, who directed the DVD. "Although they were given some direction," says Ms Collis,"the actors were not told which facial muscles they should move. C (50)" For example, when someone feels contempt, you can't say for certain that their eyebrows always go down.Someone who has tried to establish such rules is the American, Professor Paul Ekman, who has built a database of how the face moves for every emotion. The face can make 43 distinctmuscle movements called "action units". These can be combined into more than 10,000 visiblefacial shapes. Ekman has written out a pattern of facial muscular movements to representeach emotion.A We thought of trying to describe each emotion, but it would have been almost impossible to make clear rules for this.B Research has also been done to find out which areas of the brain read emotional expressions.C These particular muscles are difficult to control, and few people can do it.D Any other method of showing all the 412 emotions, such as words, would have been far less effective.E He said that the expression of these feelings was universal and recognisable by anyone, from any culture.F They decided that it was a mental state that could be preceded by "1 feel" or "he looks" or "she sounds".。

As scientists learn more about memory, we are closing in on this tantalizing goal.1Some of the most exciting evidence comes from research that has built on earlier findings linking LTP2 and memory to identify a gene that improves memory in mice. ____2____ Mice bred to have extra copies of this gene showed more activity in their NMDA receptors, more LTP,and improved performance on several different memory tasks — learning a spatial layout3, recognizing familiar objects, and recalling a fear-inducing shock. If these basic insights about genes, LTP, and the synaptic basis of memory can be translated to people — and that remains to be seen — they could pave the way for memory-enhancing treatments. ____3____ As exciting as this may sound, it also raises troubling issues. Consider the potential educational implications of memory-enhancing drugs. If memory enhancers were available, children who used them might be able to acquire and retain extraordinary amounts of information, allowing them to progress far more rapidly in school than they could otherwise. How well could the brain handle such an onslaught ofinformation? What happens to children who don’t have access to the latest memory enhancers? Are they left behind in school — and as a result handicapped later in life?____4____ Imagine that you are applying for a job that requires a good memory, such as a manager at a technology company or a sales position that requires remembering customers’ names as well as the attributes of different products and services. Would you take a memory-enhancing drug to increase your chances of landing the position? Would people who felt uncomfortable taking such a drug find themselves cut out of lucrative career opportunities?Memory drugs might also help take the sting out of d isturbing memories that we wish we could forget but can’t.4 The 2004 hit movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind told the story of a young man seeking just such freedom from the painful memories of a romantic breakup. As you will see in the section on persistence later in the chapter, emotionally arousing events often create intrusive memories, and researchers have already muted emotional memories with drugs that block the action of key hormones. Should emergency workers who must confront horrifying accident scenes that can burden them with persisting memories be provided with such drugs? Should such drugs be given to rape victims who can’t forget the trauma? Memory drugs might provide some relief to such individuals. But could they also interfere with a n individual’s ability to assimilate and come to terms with a difficult experience?5 ____5____ 词汇:tantalizing 诱人的 synaptic (解剖学)突触的steroid 类固醇 onslaught 大量lucrative 有利可图的 hit (演出等)成功注释:1.As scientists learn more about memory, we are closing in on this tantalizing goal.随着科学家们对记忆了解增多,我们正接近这一诱人的目标。

[注:无可奈何you are helpless]_____③_____ For some reason, kids who wet the bed are not able to feel that their bladder(膀胱)is full (充满)and don‘t wake up to pee in the toilet(厕所). Sometimes a kid who wets the bed will have a realistic(逼真的)dream that he‘s in the bathroom(洗手间)peeing—only to wake up later and discover(发现)he‘s all wet. Many kids who wet the bed are very deep sleepers. _____④_____[注:熟睡]Some kids who wet the bed do it every single night . Others wet some nights and are dry on other.A lot of kids say that they seem to be drier(干燥、意味不尿床)when they sleep at a friend‘s or a relative‘s house. Don‘t wet someone else‘s bed!‖ This can help you stay dry even if you‘re not aware of it.练习:A The good news is that almost all kids who wet the bed eventually(最终)stop.B Trying to wake up someone who wets the bed is often like trying to wake a log(木头)—they juststay asleep. ④C It‘s something you can‘t help doing.③D Just like you may have inherited(继承)your mom‘s blue eyes or your uncle‘s long legs, youprobably inherited bedwetting, too. ②E That‘s because kids wh o are anxious(担心)about wetting the bed may not sleep much or only very lightly(稍微). ⑤F But you are not alone.①What Makes Me the Weight I Am?(什么造成我现在的体重) There‘s no easy answer to this question. 第一篇:Mobile PhonesMobile phones should carry a label if they proved1 to be a dangerous source of radiation, according to Robert Bell, a scientist. And no more mobile phone transmitter towers should be built until the long-term health effects of the electromagnetic radiation they emit are scientifically evaluated, he said. “Nobody’s going to drop dead overnight2 but we should be asking for more scientific information,” Robert Bell said at a conference on the health effects of low-level radiation. ____1____A report widely circulated among the public says that up to now scientists do not really know enough to guarantee there are no ill-effects on humans from electromagnetic radiation. According to Robert Bell, there are 3. 3 million mobile phones in Australia alone and they are increasing by 2,000 a day3. ____2____As well, there are 2,000 transmitter towers around Australia, many in high density residential areas5. ____3____The electromagnetic radiation emitted from these towers may have already produced some harmful effects on the health of the residents nearby.Robert Bell suggests that until more research is completed the Government should ban construction of phone towers from within a 500 metre radius of school grounds, child care centres, hospitals, sports playing fields and residential areas with a high percentage of children. ____4____ He adds that there is also evidence that if cancer sufferers are subjected to electromagnetic waves the growth rate of the disease accelerates.____5____ According to Robert Bell, it is reasonable for the major telephone companies to fund it. Besides, he also urges the Government to set up a wide-ranging inquiry into possible health effects.
